Sack of pregnant married police officer: Ekiti state drags Commissioner of Police, IGP to court

Ekiti State Government through the state Ministry of Justice has dragged the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, to court over the dismissal of a policewoman resident in Ekiti State, Omolola Olajide, for being pregnant.

Joined as co-defendants in the suit said to be “in defence of the woman police officer’s rights” are the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police and the Police Service Commission.

Communication from the police last month had shown that the female cop was discharged from the force in compliance with Section 127 of the Police Act and Regulations Cap. P19, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

But the state Attorney-General, Mr Olawale Fapohunda, in the suit FHC/AD/CS/8/2021 filed in the Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti Judicial Division, is, among others, seeking court declaration that:

Section 127 of the Police Act and Regulations which provides for the discharge from the Police Force, women police officers who become pregnant while unmarried unconstitutional.

Section 127 of the Police Act and Regulations provides that “an unmarried woman police officer who becomes pregnant shall be discharged from the force and shall not be re-enlisted except with the approval of the Inspector-General”.

A press statement on Sunday from the Special Assistant to the AG on Media, Olalekan Suleman, stated, “Fapohunda has reviewed the said Police Regulations and found several provisions in violation of sections 37 and 42 of the Constitution the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) as well as several regional and international treaties to which Nigeria is a party including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights”.

The suit seeks determination of whether by the combined provisions of Sections 37 and 42 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), and Articles 2, 3, 5, 18(3) and 19 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the provisions of Section 127 of Police Act and Regulation Cap. P19, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 are not unconstitutional, null and void”.

The AG, is also in the suit “seeking an order nullifying Section 127 of the Police Act and Regulations as well as an order of perpetual injunction restraining the IGP, Ekiti Commissioner of Police and the PSC from implementing the said provisions”.

According to the statement, Fapohunda has also written to the IGP offering the support of Ekiti State Ministry of Justice in conducting a gender audit of the Police Act and Regulations.

Party registration turns bloody as gunmen kill APC chairman in Benue

The All Progressive Congress (APC) ward chairman of Gboko south, Tersoo Ahu, has been killed by gunmen in Gboko on Sunday.

Ahu and other APC ward excos were said to be engaged in the training of party officials for membership registration and revalidation exercise when gunmen stormed the venue with clubs, cutlass as well as iron and manhandled him.

The publicity secretary of the APC, Benue chapter, James Orgunga, who confirmed the incident, said the ward chairman who sustained serious injuries from the attack died later at a public hospital in Gboko, where he was receiving treatment.

The brutal killing of the APC ward chairman in Gboko, the ancestral home of the Tiv people, may not be unconnected with the alleged factions within the party over the 2023 general election.

The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) of the Benue Command Kate Anene, a DSP, confirmed the incident and said the investigation has commenced arresting the suspects.

“Yes I can confirm the attack and killing of the APC ward chairman in Gboko, our men rushed to the scene but the suspects fled. However we have identified them and very soon we shall pick them up,” DSP Anene said.

Vanguard had reported last Wednesday that hoodlums numbering over 100 attacked policemen attached to the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Team , at Ibeju Lekki, in a bid to evade arrest.

The policemen stormed the area last Monday, to effect the arrest of some persons said to have refused to honour their invitation at the Force headquarters, Abuja, over an ongoing investigation bothering on land matter and threat to life.

Late Wale, who resided in Akodo community, was said to have led the policemen to Iwaju Oba Street, where some arrests were made. While moves to arrest others were still on, hoodlums said to have been armed with dangerous weapons, including guns , swooped on the operatives.

During the attack, the hoodlums reportedly descended on Wale and whisked him away, while the Police zoomed off.

Relatives tried reaching the missing him on his mobile to no avail, until Saturday, when news filtered round that his body had been recovered by policemen attached to Akodo Division.

A distraught relative of the deceased, Jalailu Alimi , who informed journalists of the recovered body , said it had been deposited in the morgue.

Alimi said “It is a very sad development. These people killed my brother for nothing .This is the most wicked thing I have seen in my life .We got a call from the Police at Akodo division early morning of Saturday , that they had recovered the corpse . After killing him, his assailants dumped the body in Magbon Segun Beach, Ibeju Lekki “.

Identities of those so far arrested in connection with the attack were given as Oluwo, Ayoku , Hassan and Agbaje.

Policemen at Akodo division confirmed the recovery of the body , adding that efforts were still on to arrest other fleeing suspects who were mentioned in the attack. Students battle landlord, caretaker over death of colleague in Imo

Students of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Imo state, have intensified moves to shut down Ezinwanne lodge, after a first year student of building technology, Anthony Chinweotito Emmanuel, was alleged to have been beaten by his caretaker, one Daniel Okufuwa, into coma and subsequently died in the hospital after five days.

Vanguard investigation around Nekede, uncovered that the Student Union Government has concluded to take the action of closing down the Lodge on Monday. The reason being that they wanted justice for Chinweotito.

On how it started, a source told Vanguard that it was as a result of disagreement between the Caretaker of Ezinwanne lodge and Students, following a meeting between “The school management, landlords and the Student Union Government, had a meeting and they agreed that final year students should be allowed to pay half payment for accommodation and other students should pay full payment. Some landlords agreed while others said they would not accept it. This decision was taken as a result of this covid-19 lockdown challenges.”

A student from the lodge who pleaded not to mention his name said: “In this our Ezinwanne lodge, our caretaker has been preventing us from seeing the landlord even when we ask for the landlords phone number he will give us fake phone numbers and it has been very difficult to connect the number sometime it will to another person.

“We pleaded for the landlords phone number, so that we can reach out to the owner of the owner of the house so that we can explain our plights for him to accept us especially the graduating students to pay half payment and that by April all of us will go.”

“On the 2 February, 2021, after our meeting with the caretaker, he gave us quit notice that since we can’t pay full payment that all of us should pack out from the lodge, he did not stop at that, he disconnected our light, including water.

“So, the students reconnected the water back at least to use it take their birth and go to exam while others use the water to wash their cloths.

“When the caretaker came back and saw that students have pumped water, he got angry and used sword to cut the pipes linking water into the buildings, as he was doing it students pleaded with him to stop but he got angry and started fighting the students, beaten them.”

“It was in that process that the caretaker accused Chinweotito of stealing his phone and immediately used a heavy wood and landed it on the neck of Chinweotito, and the boy felled down and entered into coma. Chinweotito was in coma, from that Tuesday to Saturday, when he died.”

Reacting, the President of the Student Union Government, SUG, Ezeh Chukwuebuka, who confirmed the incident said: “We are prepared to seal up Ezinwanne lodge because we are not happy the story of how Chinweotito died, we are closing down the Ezinwanne lodge on Monday.

"It is very wicked how some caretaker treats students. We are demanding to see the landlord of the Ezinwanne lodge and if he fails to show his face no student will live in that lodge again. We must get justice for Chinweotito.”

Awujale denies statement on Sunday Igboho

The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona has denied authoring a statement widely circulating on the social media on activities of Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

In the statement that has gone viral on the social media, the respected monarch was quoted to have said: “As a traditional ruler, or a leader in Yorubaland, you must support Sunday Igboho at this moment if you are not a bastard.”

Though there has been no indication of when or where the the paramount ruler of Ijebuland made the statement, many had cited it as indication of the Oba’s support for activities of Sunday Igboho against criminal herdsmen terrorizing people in different parts of the Southwest.

But in a statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State by Tunde Oladunjoye, his personal assistant, Awujale denied authoring the viral statement.

“The attention of the Aafin Awujale has been drawn to a fake news trending on the social media quoting our revered royal father, Oba Dr Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, as having issued a statement on the current situation in some states concerning Mr Sunday Igboho”.

“The Aafin Awujale hereby categorically denies that Kabiyesi Alayeluwa ever issued such statement or comment on the issue”.

“As you are all aware, Kabiyesi Alayeluwa is a great patriot and at all times fully in support of Yoruba’s progress, development and aspirations. However, it should be clarified that the statement credited to him in the meantime is a “fake news”.

“This statement is issued as a matter of principle that nobody has the right to put anything in the news in our name without our knowledge and consent”

Lekki shootings: Sanwo-Olu yet to hand over camera found by Fashola

The camera found by Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, at the Lekki Toll Gate, has not been handed over to the Lagos Judicial Panel.

This was revealed by Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, the representative of civil society on the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing the alleged killing of #EndSARS protesters by soldiers at the Lekki tollgate.

Fashola, had on Sunday, October 25, 2020, while conducting a tour of the toll plaza alongside governors and ministers from the South-West, supposedly discovered a camera at the toll plaza five days after the shooting of unarmed #EndSARS protesters by soldiers.

He subsequently gave the camera to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who promised to hand it over to the judicial panel.

While handing over the camera to Sanwo-Olu after picking it up with the aid of a handkerchief, Fashola had said, “I think this will help with the ongoing investigations into the shootings at the Lekki Toll Gate. It requires forensic analysis and could be used in the investigations to unravel the mystery surrounding the shootings at the Toll Gate, I believe.”

Over three months after the “discovery” of the camera, Adegboruwa had said it was yet to be handed over to the panel as promised.

He said this while stating reasons for his dissenting opinion on an application by Lekki Concession Company to take over toll plazas one and two for insurance claims and to maintain security threat.

In a copy of the dissenting opinion made available to newsmen, the lawyer said the Lagos State Government and the Chief Pathologist of the state were also yet to appear before the panel.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria said, “The Lagos State Government has been summoned by the Panel and it is yet to appear, to offer its own testimony of the accounts of 20th October 2020. The Governor of Lagos State in an open broadcast, promised to hand over a camera picked up by the Honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, to the Panel. That has not happened. The Nigerian Army made very serious allegations against the Lagos State Government during its testimony, on the incident at the Lekki Toll Plaza, which are yet to be responded to.

“Allegations have been made against the company responsible for the Bill Boards at the Admiralty Toll Plaza, as to who did and why electricity was switched off on 20th October 2020, prior to the invasion by the Army. The company is yet to appear before the Panel.

“Summons have been issued for the appearance and testimony of the Chief Pathologist of Lagos State, to appear and to tender autopsy reports of deaths and CCTV footages of all mortuaries in Lagos State, from 20th October 2020. They are yet to appear before the Panel.”

Sunday Igboho: My children, wife worried about my life

Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has revealed that his children and wife want him to quit his quest to liberate the South-West from killer herdsmen.

In recent weeks, Igboho has been in the news for asking killer herdsmen to leave some communities in Oyo and Ogun states.

However, his family are worried he could be killed.

In a recent interview with Punch, Igboho said:

“My children challenge and persuade me to quit every day. They wave the caution sign to me every time. My wife is also very worried about the cause that I fight but I have to do this for the liberation of my people, anyway. But I am equally worried for my people who are being dehumanised and oppressed in their own territory for no just reason. Those who should address the issue just fold their arms and watch because they are compromised. This struggle is for the good of all so that when I am gone they would not live in subjection.”

Igboho added that he is not deterred by people after his life, adding that he only fears God.

He said: “I am not afraid of anything or anyone but God. God is the owner and controller of every soul. It is only God who can kill me. No human being can kill me, so I cannot be afraid of any mortal.”

Igboho’s house was razed a few days after he asked herdsmen in the Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State to leave within seven days.

However, the activist noted that he is not deterred and won’t be distracted.

“Those involved in the razing of my house are those who have ulterior motives and who are opposed to the cause that I am fighting. They tried hard to attack me in order to get me depressed. For me, I am not deterred. As for the hoodlums, what I can say is that I have handed them over to God,” Igboho stated.

The Yoruba activist also noted that he has no intention to run for political office. He also rejected the comparison with IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.

He said: “I am not going into politics and I am not doing this to seek any form of popularity.”

On Nnamdi Kanu, Igboho said: “I am not Kanu and I am not like Kanu. Kanu is working on his agenda; perhaps, he doesn’t carry his people along. This is about the Yoruba people being killed, raped, extorted, oppressed and dehumanised in their own land. What we want is justice, peace, harmony and good governance.”

Batik dye causes blood-red flood in Indonesia

An Indonesian village was inundated by crimson-coloured water after flooding hit a fabric dyeing centre in central Java, sparking a social media frenzy.

Residents of Jenggot, near the town of Pekalongan, were seen wading through blood-red water on Saturday and many shared images of the rare phenomenon online.

Officials later confirmed the unique colour came from harmless fabric dye used by several batik factories in the area.

Pekalongan itself is well known for its batik textiles industry, with many cottage industries flourishing across the town.

“They did not dump the dye on purpose, but several home industries were flooded and the dye packages were carried away by the water”, local disaster agency official Dimas Arga Yudha told AFP Sunday, adding that the batik dye was not toxic or dangerous.

Local officials deployed pumps to drain the flooded area it was cleared in less than an hour.

Floods are very common across the Indonesian archipelago, especially during the rainy season.

In January at least 21 people died and more than 60,000 were evacuated after a series of major floods hit South Kalimantan.

Gunmen kidnap Taraba NLC chairman

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairman of the Taraba State chapter, Peter Jediel.

He was abducted at his residence in Sunkani, the headquarters of Ardo-Kola Local Government Council.

Confirming the incident to Channels Television via a telephone interview, the younger brother of the NLC chairman, Boniface Stephen revealed that the hoodlums shot sporadically into the air to scare residents before whisking Mr. Jediel away.

According to Stephen, they came in their number at about 12:00 am on Sunday, broke the NLC chairman’s gate, and forced their way into his compound.

For now, no call has come in from the abductors to know what their demands are.

When asked about the development, the police public relations officer in the state declined to comment saying he could not confirm the incident at the time.

Mr. Jediel’s abduction comes a year after the former NLC chairman in Taraba, Peter Gambo was also abducted in his house.

With the cases of kidnapping and other criminal activities on the rise in the state, Governor Darius Ishku has asked the federal government to allow citizens to own licensed guns for their own safety and protection.

NDLEA raids Edo forest, seizes N1.4bn worth of cannabis

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Edo State have seized cannabis valued at N1.4bn in Ukpuje Forest, in the Owan West Local Government Area of the State

Seven suspects were also arrested in connection with cannabis weighing 233,778 kilograms reportedly found in four warehouses.

While 2,249kg dried weeds were seized, cannabis weighing 231,529kg was destroyed on the farm.

A statement on Saturday by the state Commander of the agency, Buba Wakawa, noted that the seizure was the largest single concentration of cannabis discovered by the command.

Wakawa ascribed the success of the operation to the enabling environment created by the new Chief Executive of the Agency, Brigadier General Buba Marwa.

He said, “We took delivery of two new Hilux operational vehicles presented to the command last week. This is the first assignment of the vehicles and it turned out to be the best for the command. We are grateful to the chairman, and this is a clear warning that there is no room for drug barons in the state.

“The warehouses are located in the heart of the forest, yet we were able to uncover them based on intelligence gathering. The cannabis warehouses were located at Ukpuje Forest.

“The community is notorious for cannabis cultivation and trafficking as well as attacks on law enforcement officers, but stood still as a combined team of NDLEA and combatant military personnel overran the drug trafficking syndicates due to our superior fire power.”

Marwa identified the suspects as chairman of vigilantes in Ukpuje, Emmanuel Oki, 62; one Chief Odi Sabato, 42; Bright Edegbe, 53; Gowon Ehimigbai, 53; Enodi Ode, 37; Ayo Oni, 30; and Akhime Benjamin, 43..

He added, “The operation lasted from Thursday night through Friday night February 5, 2021. The suspects will be investigated and charged.”

Tiger captured alive after Indonesia zoo escape

An escaped tiger that killed a keeper at a zoo on Borneo island has been captured alive after a day on the loose, police said.

The white Bengal tiger was found wandering in a jungle surrounding Sinka Zoo in the town of Singkawang, West Kalimantan on Saturday, following its escape through a hole.

Another tiger that broke free was shot dead earlier.

“We found and captured the second tiger by sedating it with a tranquillizer,” local police chief Prasetiyo Adhi Wibowo told journalists late Saturday.

The pair of 18-month-old female Bengal tigers — previously thought to be Sumatran — escaped from the zoo after days of torrential rain created a hole near their enclosure.

A 47-year-old male zookeeper and several animals were found dead near the tiger cage.

The escape triggered a frantic search involving police, military and conservation officials, while locals were told to stay at home and avoid tourist attractions near the zoo while authorities hunted the animals.

An orange-coloured Bengal tiger was shot dead after a failed attempt to neutralise it with a tranquillizer gun.

Conservationists said they were forced to shoot the endangered animal after it was no longer responding to its keeper and showed aggressive behaviour towards humans.

Indonesia’s zoos do not have a good reputation, and some have been reported for animal cruelty.

30-year old woman, her two daughters shot dead by ex-boyfriend

A St. Louis woman and her two daughters were fatally shot by her ex-boyfriend, who fled on a Greyhound bus and was captured 100 miles away, police said.

Ronald Marr, 34, was arrested in Effingham, Illinois, hours after the early Thursday triple slaying of the 30-year-old woman and her 7- and 1-year-old daughters in St. Louis, police said.

Cops responded to the woman’s St. Louis home and found all three dead from gunshot wounds. Police Chief John Hayden told reporters investigators found a “very gruesome scene” inside.

“There’s a lot of disturbing evidence  inside,” Hayden said. “It’s traumatizing to the officers that went in.”

The victims have not been identified by police, but relatives told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Marr was the former boyfriend of 30-year-old Kanisha Hemphill, who died in the attack. The woman’s daughters, 7-year-old Journee, and 1-year-old Ja’Kari, were also killed, relatives told the newspaper.

Court records cited by the outlet show that police said a witness heard the gunfire and spotted Marr running away. The witness later picked Hemphill’s ex out of a photo lineup, police said.

Marr allegedly tossed his cellphone following the triple slaying and bought another before getting onto a Greyhound bus and fleeing, police said.

A motive for the slayings was not yet provided by investigators.

Hemphill’s brother, Jermaine Walker, said his sister and Marr had ongoing domestic issues.

“I didn’t really care for him,” Walker told the Post-Dispatch. “They had a few instances and I always told my sister, leave the guy alone. But she ended up having a baby by him.”

Other relatives are in shock following the killings, Walker said.

“The death penalty would be too easy for him,” he continued. “He should have ate a bullet right after that.”
