LASU postpones exam indefinitely as workers shut campus

The management of the Lagos State University has postponed the 2019/2020 first semester examinations indefinitely after non-academic staff shut the entrance of the university.

The Punch gathered that workers under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have declared a nationwide strike.

It was learnt that members of the NASU branch of the unions shut the entrance of LASU in a bid to disrupt the ongoing examination in the school.

The workers shut examination halls and other facilities in the school.

The management announced the postponement in a statement on Monday, titled, ‘2019/2020 first semester GNS examination postponed indefinitely’, by its Head of Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations, Mr Ademola Adekoya.

The statement read, “As the 2019/2020 first semester examinations of Lagos State University (LASU) come to an end, the General Nigerian Studies examination has been postponed indefinitely.

“According to the Director, Centre For General Nigerian Studies, the postponement became expedient because of the ongoing industrial action by some of the unions of the Institution.

He added that a new date for the examination would be announced in due course.

“All the concerned students are advised to check the university information platforms, website, official bulletin and others from time to time on the new dates for the GNS examination.”

IGP didn’t pay N2bn for tenure extension —Police

The Nigeria Police Force has said that the tenure extension of the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, was not paid for.

The Punch reported that the IGP’s tenure was extended by three months by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

The Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammad Dingyadi who made the announcement said the extension was necessary to give room for the proper selection of a successor.

However, the police, in a statement issued on Monday, described as untrue a report (not by The Punch) that the tenure extension was purchased by the IGP for N2bn.

“The Police High Command has described as untrue, unfounded, defamatory and libellous, the publication dated February 07, 2021, which alleged that the IGP paid over 2 Billion Naira for the tenure extension,” the statement said.

“The Force wishes to state categorically that the extension of service of the IGP was strictly the prerogative of the President and was never paid for as maliciously reported in the publication.

“The insinuations that the IGP did not “celebrate” his extension smacks of ignorance and a pathetic misplacement of priority.

“The extension does not call for merry-making or celebration but a time for more work, rededication to duty and selfless service to the nation.

“The IGP, while assuring the nation of an unwavering commitment by the Force under his leadership, to improved service delivery, safety and security of the citizenry, enjoins members of the public to disregard and discountenance the publication as evidently untrue and unfounded. The IGP is undistracted and the Force remains motivated and committed to delivering on its mandate, especially the task of neutralizing current and emerging internal security threats.

The statement added that the IGP has directed his legal team to commence legal actions against the online news platform.

FG seals Abuja laboratory for issuing fake Covid-19 results

The Federal Government has sealed an Abuja-based laboratory for issuing fake COVID-19 results to international travellers.

The Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this on Monday at the weekly press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.

He said the development followed an investigation conducted by the government after a media report last year revealed underhand dealings of some laboratories issuing fake results.

Recall that an online newspaper, The Cable, had in an undercover story in December 2020 reported that for N25,000, travellers were getting fake COVID-19 test results.

Ihekweazu said based on that report, an investigation was conducted and the affected laboratory was sealed with the assistance of the Federal Capital Territory Authority.

Ibarapaland now safe, says Oyo Amotekun commandant

The Commandant of the Oyo State Security Network Agency codenamed Amotekun Corps, Retired Col. Olayinka Olayanju, has declared that Ibarapaland is safe and free of killers and kidnappers.

The Oyo State Government had deployed 200 operatives of the Amotekun in Ibarapa Local Government Area of the state to checkmate the crisis between Ibarapa indigenes and Fulani herdsmen.

“These operatives will launch missions to rid the forests of criminals. They will be presenting daily reports of their activities to me in the short run and periodic reports in the long run,” Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo state had said.

Olayanju, who disclosed this in a statement in Ibadan on Monday, said he would personally lead anyone interested in taking a tour of parts of Ibarapaland earlier hit by herders/farmers crisis.

According to him, farmers and the law-abiding people in the area are going about their businesses without molestation.

He also denounced some audio and video posts on social media, which tend to raise what he called “clearly unfounded alarms” about the Ibarapa security situation.

“I am in Aiyete and I‘ve been moving around Ibarapaland freely, no one has reported any adverse security issue to me.

“No security challenges observed in Ibarapa Central and North contrary to rumours been peddled,” Olayanju stated.

Toyin Abraham responds to Ruggedman's allegation that only Nollywood actresses are buying cars & houses while male actors are not

Nollywood Actress Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi has responded to Ruggedman's call out that only Nollywood actresses are the ones buying cars and houses while their male colleagues aren't.

Mrs Ajeyemi says this is far from the truth and that because the men have chosen to be quiet does not mean they don't have it.

She also says she knows some actresses who get paid in millions in this same Nollywood.

Mentioning Ruggedman's name in her response, Toyin wrote;

“I saw the social media post made by respected rapper, Ruggedman about women making more money and doing well better than men.

I read between the lines and saw what Ruggedman implied. It is a little bit sad that many people on social media leeched on it with many derogatory comments about women especially those of us in Nollywood.

It is important that I put this out there that many women make money and make good money legitimately. I know actresses who charge 2 million, 3 million and 5 million in this Nollywood. I get paid in millions of naira for gigs. As a a matter of fact, I just paid for a very good car worth millions of Naira and at the same time I know a lot of men in Nollywood who are doing extra ordinarily well and paid in millions.

The fact that most of these men choose not to make noise on social media do not in any way mean that they are second class citizens in this industry.

We need to stop attributing every woman’s success to her s3xual prowess with men, women deserve the success they have as much as men without attributing it to their sexuality.

Nollywood women like Bimbo Ademoye, Nancy Isime, Kehinde Bankole, Inidima Okojie , Sharon Ooja, Bisola Aiyeola, are getting paid in millions.

Even script writers that are not in the limelight are getting paid in millions. It is disparaging to put the successes of these women within the box of their sexuality.

A lot of women are doing great things legitimately. I am one of them and so also are many other women in other industries not just the entertainment industry. A woman is more than the sum total of her s3xuality.”

Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi.

Ebola strikes again in Democratic Republic of Congo as wife of survivor dies of the virus

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are racing to contain a possible Ebola outbreak, after a woman died from the virus near the eastern city of Butembo.

The woman showed symptoms on 1 February in the town of Biena, North Kivu. She died in hospital in Butembo two days later. She was married to a man who had contracted the virus in a previous outbreak.

“It was a farmer, the wife of a survivor of Ebola, who showed typical signs of the disease on February 1,” health minister Eteni Longondo told state television RTNC.

The virus can live in the semen of male survivors for more than three years, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

“The provincial response team is already hard at work. It will be supported by the national response team which will visit Butembo shortly,” the health ministry statement said.

Herdsmen won’t be allowed to violate Oyo anti-grazing law —Olugbon also lends his voice

The Deputy Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas, Oba Francis Alao, who is also the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, has advised herdsmen in the state to obey the anti-open grazing law put in place to regulate animal husbandry in the state.

The monarch, who said this in an interview with The Punch in Ibadan, stressed that no government would fold its arms and watch people violate the law. He stated that the government would not allow anybody to violate its anti-open grazing law.

He said although the Constitution permits Nigerians to live anywhere they want to live, that section of the constitution was not a licence for anybody to break the law.

The Olugbon said, “What I will tell them ( herdsmen) is that in as much as the law permits every Nigerian to live wherever they choose to live within Nigeria, that does not give them the room to be lawless.

“The anti-open grazing law has been passed and if anybody violates the law, the law enforcement agents will catch up with such a person. Such will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“The Fulani leaders in Oyo State communicated with us the outcome of the meeting they had with the commissioner of police. They are monitoring their people. The state government, the Oyo State Police Command and traditional rulers are working together so there is peace in every part of the state.

“Whoever violates the law, the law enforcement agents will catch him or her and will face the consequence.”

The Olugbon, who led monarchs, state government delegation and the police to the January 24 peace meeting held in Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of the state to restore peace in the place, said the government and security agencies were working to ensure that the area is peaceful at all times.

He said, “The governor went to Ibarapa and I believe he saw things himself and the people must have told him the problems, the situation will return back to normal in the area and in every part of the state.”

Diddy sues former clothing company Sean John for $25m

Sean “Diddy” Combs has filed a $25 million lawsuit against his former clothing brand, Sean John, and the company’s new owner Global Brand Groups USA, according to All Hip Hop.

According to a complaint filed on Thursday, Sean John, who has launched a new women’s clothing line with the brand Missguided, used the mogul’s image, likeness, and persona without his permission.

Combs founded the company in 1998. He sold stakes to GCG USA in November 2016 for an estimated $70 million and still owned 20 percent, according to Forbes.

In the lawsuit, Combs claims that the companies fabricated quotes in an article that made it seem as though he endorses the Sean John x Missguided clothing line. His image was also included in a 40 second video campaign in promotion of the new collaboration.

Jonathan D. Davis, Comb’s lawyer, says he disapproves of using his image to promote a brand he no longer wishes to be associated with.

“He does not challenge GBG’s right to use the Sean John trademark, but rather GBG’s decision to leverage a fabricated quote they created and then falsely attributed to Mr. Combs,” Davis said. “And to use Mr. Combs’s name and other monikers to create the false and misleading impression that Mr. Combs is the decision-maker behind the designs and creation of the GBG Collection.”

He continued, “Sean John, GBG and Missguided are using the unapproved material, which contains false or misleading representations of fact, to promote and sell the items in the GBG Collection because they understand that associating it with Mr. Combs will significantly increase sales and profits.”

Petrol price may hit N190 soon in Nigeria

Marketers have said with the current realities in the global crude oil markets, the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) in Nigeria should be between N185 and N200 per litre, unless the government wants to subsidise the product, ’FEMI ASU reports

The upturn in global oil prices last week has again brought to the fore marketers’ concerns over the non-implementation of the full deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector as the pump prices of petrol have been left unchanged for more than two months.

Top officials of two major marketers’ associations who spoke with Punch correspondents on Saturday said the continued increase in oil prices had brought back petrol subsidy.

According to the marketers, the pump price of petrol should be between N185 and N200 per litre.

The product is currently sold at between N160 and N165 per litre at many filling stations in Lagos.

The Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr Clement Isong, said, “Members of my association are operating in Nigeria and care about the long-term sustainability of the industry as well as the country itself.

“So, we know that depending on what exchange rate you use, the pump price should be between N185 and N200 per litre.

“For as long as we continue to sell the product at what we are currently selling it, then somebody is bearing the cost of subsidy, and the country really cannot afford subsidy at this time.”

Bobrisky should leave Nigeria if he wants to continue with his way of life – NCAC Director, Runsewe blows hot

The Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, on Sunday, sent an important message to parents but couldn’t resist the urge to attack a Nigerian crossdresser known as Bobrisky.

Runsewe called on parents to instill African cultures and values in their children and wards, to make them become responsible adults.

He admonished parents to always provide guidance to their children to make sure they won’t live lifestyles that would negate African cultures and values in marriage, procreation, moral decency, and respect for elders.

Runsewe, however, cited the lifestyle of Lagos based cross-dresser, Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju, known popularly as Bobrisky as an example.

According to Runsewe, Bobrisky had constituted a nuisance to Nigerian and African values and misleading other youths, due to a lack of true African values in him.

Runsewe also alleged that Bobrisky was going to set up the African Chapter of Gay and LGBT in Nigeria during his recently aborted birthday party with people from over 70 countries coming to attend the event.

According to Runsewe, the 29-year-old social media personality is nothing but a disgrace and disgust to Nigeria, and should not be allowed to continue with his fake life.

He said: “Do you know that the so-called Bobrisky was going to set up the African Chapter of Gay and LGBT or whatever they call it in Nigeria during his recently aborted birthday party? People from over 70 countries arrived in Lagos for the event.

“They were all at Ikoyi, preparing to launch it. We got a hint of it and had to put a stop to the event. I seized all the food and gave them to IDPs. If they had launched that thing, Nigeria would have been destroyed by now.

“That was how the insurgency started and because it was not nipped in the bud, today we are facing the consequences of our inaction then.

“People said the man called Bobrisky is powerful and that anytime he comes to Abuja, he lodges in a presidential suite on the tenth floor of Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

“But I will not stand and see such a character perpetrate a culture that does not conform to our African values and norms.

“If he wants to continue with that way of life, then he should leave Nigeria. Our culture does not allow such personality in our society. So he should leave Nigeria.”

Runsewe reiterated that parents should not allow their children to be influenced by characters like Bobrisky, who claims to be female.

“Bobrisky started by saying he sells body creams, and later he went further that he got boobs. He went into many areas. He insults Nigerian women, claiming he is prettier than them. This is not African.

“On his father’s birthday, he dressed like a man. So you can see the deception by a fake personality living a fake life and deceiving Nigerian youths.

Runsewe said that many organisations had lauded NCAC, including a female group from Kenya for its stand against values that negate African culture and norms.

“That man is destroying Nigerian children. If we are not careful, in the next few years women will no longer have boyfriends or husbands again.

“This is because man to man is becoming the order of the day. In Abuja today, men stand on the streets waiting to be patronised by other men.”

Runsewe said that NCAC and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs would soon meet to continue deliberations to seek the way forward in sensitizing the public on the menace.

40 years of Ministry: There have been times of betrayal – Adeboye

General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye on Sunday said there have been cases of betrayal in his 40 years as head of the church.

He and his wife celebrated his 40th year of ministry on Sunday with Thanksgiving Service, with the theme: “Sunrise.”

“If I am to give you a summary of what the journey has been these last 40 years, I will be lying to you to say things have been smooth and easy. There have been times of pain, agony, sorrow and betrayal.

“One thing that has kept us is that we have been hearing from God. For all you my children, you will hear from God,” he said.

He told his members not to be afraid of anything in life.

“Why? Because my daddy said the Redeemed Christian Church of God is mine. I can take care of my own. I will take care of my own. God will take care of you,” he said.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Sunrise’ the man of God said “Sunrise is different from a new dawn. Sunrise means a new beginning of glory. For you first born, a new beginning of glory starts now in Jesus Name.

“Sunrise spells joy. In the Name that is above every other name, your joy begins now. I decree, the one who is my source will be your source in Jesus Name. I decree to those of you that are small now, in the Name of the One who sent me, you will be greater than you can think.

“Whatever has been causing you to worry, in the Name that is above every other name, it will end today. I decree for all of you my children, concerning all that you do in every facet of your life, you will go higher in Jesus Name.”

He charged his followers to love God the more, saying, “the more you love God, the more He corrects you. The closer you get to God, the stricter he becomes. Our God is holy. Don’t mess with Him.”
