Meghan says she suffered "damage and sadness" after winning Court privacy battle over letter to dad

Meghan Markle has revealed she suffered "damage and real sadness" after she won a High Court privacy battle over a letter she sent her dad.

The Duchess of Sussex, 39, sued the Mail on Sunday publisher Associated Newspapers Ltd after they published the "heartfelt" handwritten letter to Thomas Markle.

A top judge at the High Court in London has now granted her a "summary judgment", which would see the case resolved without a trial.

In a statement released after the ruling, Meghan thanked her husband Prince Harry and mum Doria Ragland for their support.

She said: "For me and so many others, it's real life, real relationships and very real sadness.

"The damage they have done and continue to do runs deep.

"But, for today, with this comprehensive win on both privacy and copyright, we have all won.

"I share this victory with each of you - because we all deserve justice and truth, and we all deserve better.

"I particularly want to thank my husband, mom and legal team, and especially (her solicitor) Jenny Afia for her unrelenting support throughout this process."

Meghan also launched a stinging attack on the media, saying: "We all lose when misinformation sells more than the truth."

The judgement found the publication of the letter also infringed Meghan's copyright but added the issue of whether she was the 'sole author' of the letter should be determined at trial.

Man charged with threatening to kill US President, Joe Biden

A North Carolina man has been arrested on charges of issuing threats to assault and kill president Joe Biden and “chop off heads” of White House staff, according to court documents.

David Kyle Reeves, 27, of Gastonia, North Carolina, faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if proven guilty.

According to the complaint, Reeves contacted the White House and as well as the US Capitol police switchboards numerous times to communicate threats of inflicting harm to the president, lawmakers, and the staff.

The calls were made between 28 January and February 1.

In one call, Reeves allegedly said, “I am going to [expletive] kill you all, [expletive] the White House,” and “I am going to chop your heads off,” according to the complaint.

Reeves also made similar threats to a secret service agent who contacted him and added that he had done nothing wrong. He said he “had free speech.”

He asked the secret service agent to pick him up and take him to the White House “so he can punch the president in the face, sit in his chair, and stay there until he dies”, the prosecutor said.

Reeves was arrested on 5 February and was produced before court for hearing on 11 February.

“Following today’s hearing, Judge Keesler ordered Reeves to remain in custody,” said the court in a statement.

Reeves has pleaded not guilty and would be evaluated for his mental health, according to the accused’s attorney Kevin Tate, reported CNN.

Bauchi governor lambasts southern colleagues, Ortom, says herders’ carry AK-47 for defence

The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has said Fulani herders carry AK-47 for self-defence because they are being attacked by cattle rustlers.

He slammed his counterpart in Benue State, Samuel Ortom, over his handling of the farmer-herder clashes which had led to loss of lives.

Mohammed spoke at the closing ceremony of the 2021 Press Week of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bauchi State Council on Thursday at the Command Guest House.

The governor in his keynote address on the theme, ‘The Role of the Media in Promoting Peace in Nigeria,’ commended journalists in the state for their accurate and balanced reporting and for promoting peace in Nigeria.

He faulted the notice to quit given to Fulani herders in some southern states, particularly Ondo, pointing out that the moves of the “southern governors are wrong.”

Mohammed said, “On the herders-farmers clashes, you have seen what our colleagues in the South-West are doing and some of them in South-East. Some of us told them with all modesty and humility – you are wrong.

“But the person that is most wrong is the Governor of Benue State, my brother and my colleague, Governor (Samuel) Ortom; he started all these. If you don’t accommodate other tribes we are also accommodating your people in Bauchi and other places.

“We have so many Tiv people working and farming in Alkaleri, farming in Tafawa Balewa, farming in Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi; has anyone asked them to go? We have not, because it is their constitutional rights to be there.

“We have Yoruba people in Bauchi for over 150 years, even before the birth of Nigeria. Nobody has told them to go; some of them have risen to become permanent secretaries in Bauchi, Gombe and Borno.

“And now, the Fulani man is practicing the tradition of trans-human, pastoralism, he has been exposed to the dangers of the forests, the animals, and now, the cattle rustlers, who carry guns, kill him and take away his commonwealth, his cows, he had no option than to carry Ak-47 and defend himself because the society and the government are not protecting him.

“It is not his fault, it is the fault of the government and the people; you don’t criminalise all of them because in every tribe there are criminals. You should be very sensitive.”

101-year-old Osun woman survives Covid-19

A centenarian has survived the Covid-19 disease after spending 12 days on admission at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The 101-year-old resident of Ilesha, it was learnt, had shown symptoms of the disease for eight days before she was presented for treatment.

A statement by the Chief Medical Director, OAUTH, Prof. Victor Adetiloye on Thursday, explained that the woman was initially taken to a private hospital in Ile-Ife with acute cough, breathlessness, fever and malaise.

Adetiloye said the team that managed the patient encountered challenges, including advanced age, frailty, poor sleep, loss of appetite as well as frequent desaturation.

The team, however, successfully managed the case within 12 days of admission and the patient had since been discharged.

Giving insight into how the patient was managed, the CMD said symptoms of the disease had started manifesting in her eight days before she was presented for treatment, a development that worsened her clinical conditions and “this warranted a screening test for SARS CoV2.”

Tokyo 2020 chief Mori resigns over s.e.x.i.s.t comments

Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori bowed to mounting pressure and resigned Friday over s3xist remarks, but his replacement was not immediately clear after opposition emerged to his favoured successor.

The resignation and the leadership vacuum left behind by the controversy add to the woes of organisers struggling to win over a sceptical public less than six months before the virus-delayed Games.

Mori, 83, sparked domestic and international outrage by claiming last week that women speak too much in meetings, with officials, sports stars and Olympic sponsors slamming the remarks as inappropriate.

On Friday he announced he would step down, effective immediately.

“My inappropriate statement has caused a lot of chaos. I would like to express my sincere apologies,” he told a meeting of Tokyo 2020’s executive board and council called to discuss his remarks.

“I wish to resign as the president as of today.

“What is important is to hold the Olympics from July. It must not be the case that my presence becomes an obstacle to that”, he added.

Pete Edochie, a veteran Nollywood actor, has endorsed, Yul, his son, for the 2023 presidential race.

“One of my sons, who incidentally is an actor, has decided that he wants to be a politician. Most of the youngsters have been bugging my phone asking me to endorse my son that they want him as president and l get amused. But they keep insisting daddy, we want Yul to be the president of this country.

“We like him. He is disciplined, sympathetic, he believes a lot in people. They have bothered me so much that today, I’m hereby present him to you. He has my blessing. He has my endorsement.

“Any day he decides to veer off from the discipline under which he was raised, l will withdraw him from the race. It shall be well with you son. Since it has been your ambition to go into politics and the desire to run for the presidency of this country, may the good Lord assist you, protect and direct you.”

China bans BBC World News from broadcasting

China has banned BBC World News from broadcasting in the country, its television and radio regulator announced on Thursday.

China has criticised the BBC for its reporting on coronavirus and the persecution of ethnic minority Uighurs.

The BBC said it was "disappointed" by the decision.

It follows British media regulator Ofcom revoking state broadcaster China Global Television Network's (CGTN) licence to broadcast in the UK.

Ofcom's decision earlier this month came after it found that CGTN's licence was wrongfully held by Star China Media Ltd.

CGTN was also found in breach of British broadcasting regulations last year, for airing the allegedly forced confession of UK citizen Peter Humphrey.

In its decision, China's State Film, TV and Radio Administration said BBC World News reports about China were found to "seriously violate" broadcast guidelines, including "the requirement that news should be truthful and fair" and not "harm China's national interests".

It said that the BBC's application to air for another year would not be accepted.

The BBC said in a statement: 'We are disappointed that the Chinese authorities have decided to take this course of action. The BBC is the world's most trusted international news broadcaster and reports on stories from around the world fairly, impartially and without fear or favour."

The commercially-funded BBC World News TV channel broadcasts globally in English. In China it is largely restricted and appears only in international hotels and some diplomatic compounds, meaning most Chinese people cannot view it.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab called the move an "unacceptable curtailing of media freedom".

SEC joins CBN, bans crypto trading in Nigeria

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has joined the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ban crypto trading.

SEC has stopped admittance of affected persons into its Regulatory Incubation Framework for Fintech firms.

In a statement on Thursday, SEC said it received inquiries on a perceived policy conflict between its September 11 statement on Digital Assets, Classification and Treatment and the February 5 CBN circular.

The commission stressed that there were no contradictions or inconsistencies.

It clarified that last year’s statement was to provide regulatory certainty within the digital asset space, due to the growing volume of reported flows.

SEC said as the regulator of the banking system, the CBN has identified certain risks that threaten investors’ protection.

The commission disclosed that it engaged with the CBN and agreed to work together to further analyse and better understand the risks.

“For the purpose of admittance into the SEC Regulatory Incubation Framework, the assessment of all persons (and products) affected by the CBN Circular of February 5, 2021, is hereby put on hold until such persons are able to operate bank accounts within the Nigerian banking system”, it announced.

It said planned implementation of the Regulatory Incubation Guidelines for FinTech firms who intend to introduce innovative models for offering capital market products and services will continue.

SEC added that it would keep monitoring developments in the digital asset space to create a regulatory structure that enhances economic development and promotes a safe and transparent capital market.

Why we fought with MC Oluomo’s NURTW boys at Obalende – RTEAN

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in Lagos has called on the state government to urgently intervene in the fracas between it and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

Some members of NURTW and RTEAN had on Thursday morning at Obalende Motor Park on Lagos Island, engaged in a free-for-all over control of the garage.

The police later restored normalcy.

The state NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (aka MC Oluomo), claimed that the fight occurred because members of RTEAN attacked NURTW members in a bid to take over the motor park.

But the Publicity Secretary of RTEAN, Alhaji Abdulrahman Amusan, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos claimed that the fight occurred because members of NURTW attempted to dislodge members of his union from their area of operations at Obalende.

“We want the Lagos State Government to, as a matter of urgency, intervene in the matter. We are for peace, we have been working in Obalende for many years without any problem.

“We are owners, we are not touts, we love and cherish peace. We want our members to maintain peace and ensure law and order no matter the provocations,” the RTEAN spokesman said.

He claimed that the fight occurred because members of NURTW attempted to dislodge RTEAN members from their area of operations at Obalende.

According to him, RTEAN members resisted the attempt and it resulted in the fight.

“We have been working at Obalende for long. All of a sudden, on Monday, members of the NURTW encroached into the area of operations of RTEAN.

“This morning when they came, they met with resistance from our members there, and that led to the fracas.

“We had been co-existing for so many years,” he told NAN.

''No going back'', organisers list reasons for fresh Lekki tollgate protest, ban of cryptocurrency included

Organisers of the planned protest at the Lekki tollgate have said the ban on cryptocurrency accounts among other reasons triggered their action.

They gave the reasons in a press statement titled, ‘EndSARS Season 2; Why we will #OccupyLekkiTollGate on Saturday – Campaigners’, on Thursday.

According to the statement, the cause of the planned protest is beyond the ruling of the Lagos State Judicial Panel probing alleged killings of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate on October 20, 2020.

The statement read, “After commiting genocide by killing scores of people who were peacefully protesting at Lekki Tollgate and other parts of Lagos, Governor Sanwo-Olu and other oppressors wants to spit on the dead and dance on the blood of the innocent by reopening the yahoo gate to be collecting their blood money as again.

“We say NO! We are undaunted! We will be occupying Lekki Tollgate again starting from Saturday February 13. We urge all well-meaning Nigerians to storm back all the barricades as our rulers have shown that they can never change. Since the #EndSARS, they are yet to effect any of the promises. Police brutality is still raging and SARS is still operating.

“Despite overwhelming and highly compelling evidence showing how several protesters were shot by the military, no single military personnel has been brought to book.

“Deaths have been established and many victims of the Lekki shootings have surfaced, yet neither the victims nor families of our deceased colleagues have got justice.

“After close to five months of sitting, the judicial panel meant to inquire into the Lekki massacre has refused to deliver justice to victims of the massacre most of whom have either lost their limbs due to gun wounds or have become deceased.

“Government has refused to provide employment for young people, yet they went ahead to ban the most promising source of income of young people; cryptocurrency.

“Nigerians are extremely poorer and yet the cost of food is on the high side with increased cost of electricity that only produces darkness. Petrol price is being increased as marketers want it at #190 per litre.

“Nigerians are no longer secured in any part of the country; when they are not being harassed or extrajudicially murdered by police, they are being kidnapped, mimed and killed by bandits.

“Today, the life of cows has become more valuable than those of Nigerians even as our streets and communities have fallen to the rule of kidnappers and bandits.

The Nigerian government now negotiates and enriches terrorists and bandits while chasing after, arresting, shooting and killing protesters.

“It is to this end that we call on you all to come out enmasse to demand not just justice for victims and fallen heroes of the October 20 killings but that all involved in this heinous criminality be brought to book. Come out to demand the right to life and to exist in a country that respects our rights as citizens, abhors police brutality/extrajudicial killings, provides us with security, decent jobs with good wages and other such socio-economic rights that come with being a citizen.”
