Makinde shuts Shasha market indefinitely, imposes curfew

Oyo state government has imposed 24-hour curfew on Shasha market.

The market has also been ordered shut down indefinitely.

The decision, according to Governor Seyi Makinde, follows the continued killings and destruction of property in the market.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Taiwo Adisa confirmed the development on Saturday.

The clashes rocking the market continued Saturday morning with youths unleashing mayhem on one another in the area.

Residents said they had fled the entire area and could not pass the night in their homes on Friday night for fear of overnight attack from any of the warring groups.

Sources said despite the deployment of police and security agencies in the area, yet to be identified groups razed the Shasha market overnight by burning down some shops, kiosk and wares of some traders.

The source said security operatives deployed to the area could not do much as they were only stationed by the main road while clashes and burning of the market was ongoing in the interior.

Another source said people in the area woke up to another round of clashes as both youths from the Yoruba and Hausa extractions vowed to square it out.

The Yoruba youths, who were said to be hellbent on avenging the death of a cobbler after being reportedly hit with charm by a Hausa cart pusher.

The source accused the security operatives on the ground of only standing guard to protect the Seriki Shasha while the house of the Baale Shaha was left unattended to.

Another unconfirmed source said the angry youths from extractions in their hundreds are already engaging in free- for- all.

Amid the fear of an ethic uprising, many residents of Shasha community on Friday relocated from their homes to neighbouring communities to avert being caught in the web of a reprisal attack by conflicting groups.

The peace in the community was stalled in the wake of the crisis that ensued between some hoodlums and the Hausa traders following the death of one cobbler in the market.

The clash between the two groups in the market reportedly degenerated towards the evening on Friday.

Nigerian govt does not want peace – Falz reacts to Macaroni’s arrest

Nigerian rapper, Folarin Falana ‘Falz’ has slammed the Nigerian government over the arrest of Mr Macaroni and other End SARS protesters at Lekki tollgate.

Macaroni was arrested alongside some protesters at the Lekki toll gate.

Falz, reacting, described the arrest as a shameful behaviour and oppression of Nigerians.

According to him, the Nigerian government had shown they don’t want peace by using threat on citizens.

On his Twitter page, he wrote: “What is this shameful behaviour? Are these people insane? Citizens are peacefully protesting and you are arresting.

“How is this supposed to solve the problems that they have already caused?

“Macaroni has been picked up, the Nigerian government basically saying they do not want peace ohI am tired of just coping. I am tired of just managing. This is a fu*king shithole we are living in and we simply cannot continue like this.

“They are using this threat of force and violence because they expect that we would naturally fear for our lives, but the life we dey live no kuku get meaning before.”

Lekki tollgate: Peaceful protest is our right – Charly Boy supports End SARS protesters

Charly boy, on his Twitter page, joined in condemning the reopening of the toll gate, even as he insisted that Nigerians have right to protest and should not be stopped.

His tweet read, “I know these animals have turned Nigeria into a Jungle but peaceful protest is still our human right.

“Animals cannot dash us human right. Say no to #lekkitollgate reopening.

“A history of rape, history of rejection, Tribalism, Terror, Corruption, nonentities in governance and Docility but enough is enough. Say No to #lekkitollgate reopening.”

Recall that the agitation for another protest commenced after the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry handed over the possession of the tollgate to its operators, Lekki Concession Company.

While the chairman, Justice Doris Okuwobi and four others ruled in favour of another application by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC), four members of the panel, including a youth representative, Rinu Oduala, kicked against the decision.

Maverick entertainer, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has said Nigerian youths have every right to protest at Lekki toll gate.

Charly boy said this on Saturday as police officers and security operatives mount up at the toll gate.

Protesters tagged #OccupyLekki have refused to shelve planned protest against the reopening of Lekki toll gate despite the presence of armed police officers and warnings from the government.

Police beat, arrest 10 #OccupyLekki protesters – Coordinator

No fewer than 10 protesters have been arrested by security operatives at the Lekki toll gate, one of the coordinators of #OccupyLekkiTollgate has said.

Kunle Ajayi told Punch correspondent that the protesters were detained in a black maria and are about to be taken to an unknown location.

“Police have just arrested 10 protesters – Four ladies and six guys. They were beaten mercilessly and injured,” he said.

In a video, one of the arrested protesters said, “We have been arrested. Over ten of us. We are kept in a black maria stationed at the toll gate now.”

The Federal Government and the police had earlier warned youths who planned to protest at the Lekki tollgate on Saturday (today) to have a rethink and shelve the protests.

But the young Nigerians, under the aegis of #EndSARS Season 2 and #OccupyLekkiTollgate, vowed to defy the government’s order.

The other group, #DefendLagos withdrew from the protest, noting that it was in accordance with the government’s directives that no protest should hold.

The #EndSARS Season 2 and #OccupyLekkiTollgate said their action was informed by the decision of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry allowing the Lekki Concession Company to reopen the Lekki tollgate.

Police DPO shoots Amotekun operative for arresting Fulani herdsmen who destroyed farm in Oyo

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ile-Igbon Division, Surulere Local Government Area of Ogbomoso in Oyo State, Adepoju Ayodeji, on Friday shot an operative of Amotekun for arresting Fulani herdsmen who allegedly destroyed a cassava farm.

The Amotekun commandant in the state, Col. Olayanju Olayinka (retd.), who confirmed this to reporters in Ibadan on Friday, said the police boss shot the victim at close range.

SaharaReporters learnt that Amotekun operatives received a distress call from farmers to come and arrest some Fulani herdsmen who had destroyed their farms.

After the Fulani herdsmen were arrested, the DPO ordered the arrest of the operatives of Amotekun who made the arrest.

It was gathered that when the leaders of the Amotekun group, led by Olatunji Mayowa and Jenyo Isiaka, got to the station to secure the release of the arrested Amotekun personnel, the DPO said they had no business in arresting anybody.

According to a source, while one of the Amotekun operatives was speaking with the police officer on duty at the station, the DPO came out of his office, shot at them, and chased them away.

The source said, "As one of the leaders of the Amotekun was discussing with the police station guard, the DPO rushed out from his office, snatched an AK 47 rifle from one of his officers, and sprayed the Amotekun operatives with bullets.

"One of the men of Amotekun, Job Adewale, was hit at close range in the right leg and the bullet also broke his right ribs. The DPO reloaded the rifle and released more gunshots at other personnel while they were trying to carry the wounded Adewale."

My life is in danger - Billionaire Ned Nwoko cries out

Billionaire businessman Ned Nwoko has raised an alarm over plans to assassinate him.

The former house of Representatives member made this known during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, February 11, 2021.

According to him, the assassination plot had a connection with a piece of land in his community in Delta where he was building a university.

He also stated that a tussle about who becomes the next traditional ruler of his community was also another significant factor.

Nwoko disclosed that the assassination plot was exposed by one Mr. Ossy Bosah who was serving a jail term at Kuje Prison in Abuja.

His wife, Daniels was among those present at the briefing.

The former federal lawmaker said that Bosah was privileged to get wind of the plan from fellow inmates.

Following the exposition of the plot, Nwoko said that Bosah’s life was threatened via text messages, regretting that shortly after he was released from the prison, he died mysteriously.

According to him, an autopsy was being carried out to ascertain the cause of Bosah’s death.

”Bosah was able to get the information on social media and the attention of my wife, Regina, was drawn to it. I then reported the matter to the police and Department of State Security (DSS) and they went and interviewed the inmates involved,” he said.

The inmates mentioned the name of one businessman who deals in the oil and gas sector as the master minder.

Speaking further, he said the family of the late inmate would have been at this conference but due to fear for their lives, they refused to come.

He said though security around him and his family had been tightened, the press conference was necessary to let the world know of the threat.
