Police said they would have killed us if it was at night – Mr Macaroni

Nigerian Instagram comedian, Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni has shared the horrible experience he had after being arrested by the Nigerian Police Force on Saturday.

The comedian in a video shared via his Instagram story on Sunday revealed that the police officials threatened to kill all of them if the news about their arrest wasn’t all over social media.

He further said that they were beaten and stripped naked as if they were criminals.

According to him, “the Police officers told us that we were lucky that we weren’t arrested at night because they would have killed all of us and nothing will happen.

“Firstly, I want to thank everyone for the efforts they put into ensuring that we all were released safely.

“In honesty, it was a horrible experience. I went out not because I’m the only one who is brave enough to protest in Nigeria but because I knew other people would be there as well and also all we wanted was justice.

“At some point, I was scared because of the kind of utterances being made by the police officers that arrested us.

“I knew people would die. If words weren’t out there about our arrest, they would have killed all of us.

“After they arrested us at the Lekki toll gate, we were taken to Adeniji police station where we were beaten and stripped naked.

“In fact, if not that videos of our arrest were already all over social media, it would have been another day of mourning the loss of innocent Nigerian youths who came out for a peaceful protest.

“The police officials even told us that we are lucky that the news was already everywhere because if it were to be at night, they would have shot us and nothing or nobody will do anything about it.

“I am currently going to the hospital for check ups because I have bruises all over my body from all the beatings I received,” he said.

Borno gifts doctor N13.9million, car for service in Boko haram territory

Fortune finally smiled at Dr. Isa Akinbode as he was rewarded with a sum of N13.9 million and a brand new car for serving voluntarily at Monguno after he retired in 2016..

The retired doctor was presented the cheque by Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum for offering healthcare services to patients even when the town was faced with the severest threat from the terrorist group.

Akinbode’s selfless service first caught the attention of the state government when a former governor of the state, Senator Kashim Shettima visited Monguno.

He then directed officials of the state’s ministry of health to engage the doctor as a contract staff, though bureaucratic procedures and formalization of the process stalled the process.

Despite the delay, Akinbode’s dedication was never affected as he continued to provide healthcare service to people in the State.

Zulum, on Friday, however, directed that he should be paid arrears of N13.9m which accrued since the day his predecessor gave an order for his contract employment.

Zulum also directed that henceforth, the contract should be formalised for monthly entitlements, even as he presented him with a gift of Toyota Highlander.

The governor said the people like Dr. Akinbode “are the kinds of people that need to be encouraged.”

He said: “Dr. Akinbode lives in Monguno despite all the security problems. My predecessor had during his visit to Monguno, directed that he should be engaged on a contract basis. Unfortunately due to some bureaucratic procedures, his re-engagement has not been formalized.

“In fulfillment of the promise of my immediate predecessor, I decided to re-engage him on contract basis retrospectively. We are paying all his entitlements salary in arrears. I am giving him a cheque of N13.9m. I have also approved his re-engagement from 2016 being the date of his retirement.”

The Borno governor also approved the recruitment of Akinbode’s daughter into the Borno State Civil Service.

APC revalidation’ll end dead people’s appointment –Fashola

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Friday, described the ongoing revalidation/registration of the All Progressives Congress as a period of “evangelism” to clean up the party.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Fashola, who revalidated his APC membership in Lagos on Friday, said the exercise would address the frequent appointment of dead people by the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).

Since assuming office in 2015, Buhari has made six posthumous appointments, most of whom were in 2017, and later in 2020.

The minister was quoted as saying, “You will see, in the past, we have had some unfortunate incidents where, perhaps, some people were appointed, only for us to find out that they are deceased. So, this is also an opportunity to clean up because there are opportunities also as a member of a party that forms a government.

“And we need to know who is where; we also need to know what party members do. So, if I am a party member and want to host an event, I can look in my party’s database and see who does event planning, who does catering, and we share prosperity.”

Fashola also noted that, in addition to helping to clean up the APC’s records, the revalidation exercise was an opportunity for as many who were willing, especially the youths, to identify with the progressive ideals of the APC.

He said, “We are a large political family and it is always important to know how many we are, and also to increase the number. So, this registration exercise first brings about all family members in all wards and polling stations of the country together.

“It means coming back together, but more importantly, it is also a period for evangelism, expansion of the party database.”

#OccupyLekki: It’s better to have protesters than bandits with AK-47 — Adamu Garba

Former presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba, has urged the men of the Nigeria Police Force to release all protesters arrested on Saturday at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State.

Garba, who said it was better to have peaceful protesters than AK-47-wielding bandits, stressed that the arrested #OccupyLekki protesters have the right to seek justice for all victims of the October 20, 2020 incident which eyewitnesses claimed security forces opened fire on #EndSARS protesters.

He tweeted, “In as much as the #EndSARS protesters are not blocking the way for other citizens to move along the #Lekkitollgate, the law permits them the right to peaceful protest. After all, that is a tenet of democracy which we practice. All arrested protesters should be released immediately.”

Continuing, Garba wrote, “When will we ever learn in Nigeria? Is it not better for people to express themselves in a protest than hide behind any extreme motive to seek justice? I would rather have a peaceful protester than a bandit with AK-47.

“If #EndSARS protesters promises to be peaceful, let them be. If for any reason, an iota of violence is detected from them, the authorities should quickly mobilise and disperse them.

“But as long as protesters claimed to be peaceful, we should give them their right to protest and protect them against possible hoodlums hijacking the protest.”

Makinde shuts Shasha market indefinitely, imposes curfew

Oyo state government has imposed 24-hour curfew on Shasha market.

The market has also been ordered shut down indefinitely.

The decision, according to Governor Seyi Makinde, follows the continued killings and destruction of property in the market.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Taiwo Adisa confirmed the development on Saturday.

The clashes rocking the market continued Saturday morning with youths unleashing mayhem on one another in the area.

Residents said they had fled the entire area and could not pass the night in their homes on Friday night for fear of overnight attack from any of the warring groups.

Sources said despite the deployment of police and security agencies in the area, yet to be identified groups razed the Shasha market overnight by burning down some shops, kiosk and wares of some traders.

The source said security operatives deployed to the area could not do much as they were only stationed by the main road while clashes and burning of the market was ongoing in the interior.

Another source said people in the area woke up to another round of clashes as both youths from the Yoruba and Hausa extractions vowed to square it out.

The Yoruba youths, who were said to be hellbent on avenging the death of a cobbler after being reportedly hit with charm by a Hausa cart pusher.

The source accused the security operatives on the ground of only standing guard to protect the Seriki Shasha while the house of the Baale Shaha was left unattended to.

Another unconfirmed source said the angry youths from extractions in their hundreds are already engaging in free- for- all.

Amid the fear of an ethic uprising, many residents of Shasha community on Friday relocated from their homes to neighbouring communities to avert being caught in the web of a reprisal attack by conflicting groups.

The peace in the community was stalled in the wake of the crisis that ensued between some hoodlums and the Hausa traders following the death of one cobbler in the market.

The clash between the two groups in the market reportedly degenerated towards the evening on Friday.
