The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned the Federal Government against further increase in fuel price in the country.
PDP said this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja on Saturday.
Mr Ologbondiyan said Nigerians were already faced with economic hardship following the November 2020 increase in the price of fuel to N170 per litre, adding that further hike in fuel price would worsen the situation.
He said Nigerians might not survive a further fuel price increase with its attendant increase in cost of goods and services.
“This will worsen the current economic situation, where over 90 million citizen live in abject poverty, with an alarming 23 per cent unemployment rate and many more living below N500 a day,” he said.
He said there was no justification in comparing Nigeria’s fuel price with those of other countries whose citizens have better purchasing power.
“With a N30,000 monthly minimum wage, which represents N1,000 daily wage, compared to a countries like Saudi Arabia with a monthly minimum wage of 3,000 Riyals; a daily pay of100 Riyals (N10,161).
“There is no foundation to base fuel price in Nigeria with that of Saudi Arabian where citizens earn ten times higher.
“Our party therefore rejects any contemplation towards fuel price increase,” he said.

The Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA) has urged the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) on the provision of quicker, more efficient, and safer tollgate services, following its plans to resume operations.
Olorogun James Emadoye, the LERSA President, made the appeal in a statement to newsmen in Lagos on Sunday.
Emadoye said the experience of road users prior to the shutdown of the Lekki tollgate for investigation purposes, was one of hardship and suffering due to the long traffic at the toll plaza.
He stated that a tolled road was supposed to provide quick, safe and motorable experiences, which users would be happy to pay for.
Emadoye also called for the implementation of round figure fees at the toll and the immediate improvement of the tolling system technology to guarantee free flow of traffic.
“Our intent with this request to the government and LCC is for services to be reviewed and improved, in addition to listening to the peaceful agitations and concerns of our youths and citizens, before embarking on reopening the toll plaza.
“We wish to use this medium to appeal for calm from our youths and well-meaning Nigerians to enable the government do the needful, while ensuring that the lives and properties of its citizens are protected.
“The government, through the LCC, must realise that the tollgate operations cannot resume back to the old ways of distress for users of the toll plaza.
“Without a doubt, we are the only citizens in Nigeria that are forced to pay toll on a road that is less than 25km, completed in 14 years.
“With the poor experience and services at the toll plaza, we are actually paying for inconveniences rather than for convenience, as we spend on the average of 20 minutes at the toll to make payments,” he said.
Emadoye also called for the creation of viable alternative roads to the tolled roads to ease the lot of commuters along the axis.
“If you kill a herder, don’t go and sleep, we will revisit you,” National Secretary of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Alhassan Saleh has said.
He said people attack herders, and that in one way or the other, herders have found a way to retaliate.
Saleh added that nobody could evict herdsmen from the south, saying that they would resist such move.
He also said nobody could stop herdsmen from foreign nation from entering Nigeria to graze their cows.
“All those who travelled to the Benin Republic and others are coming back home. All those saying they will bar foreign herders from entering Nigeria are just playing to the gallery because if they are aware of the ECOWAS Protocols, they would know they cannot chase them away.
”That is why the position of the Bauchi State Governor [Bala Mohammed] is the true position. You have no right to evict anybody from any part of the country.
“Our number has increased recently because of the tension in Ghana and Benin republics. The ones in Benin Republic have integrated with the Yoruba in such a way that they speak the language. They were initially living in the South-West, and they are coming back,” Saleh told The Punch in an interview.
He also said the eviction notice to herders to leave South West is merely propaganda.
According to him, “They expected a reaction from us, maybe by way of attacking other ethnic nationalities. But that is wrong because the herders they are attacking are the innocent herders. Are the criminals representing anybody?
“They are doing their criminal enterprise. Our own pain is that the people who are supposed to know are pretending as if they don’t know.”
