The Kwara State Police Command said it had arrested six of the 2,414 sacked teachers in the state for allegedly contravening Covid-19 protocols during a protest at the State Government House in Ilorin on Wednesday.
The State Universal Basic Education Board teachers, known as ‘Sunset Workers’ employed in the twilight of former Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed’s administration in February 2019, were sacked by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in December 2020.
Following their disengagement, the government placed advertisement for the employment of 2,701 teachers in its basic schools.
However, the sacked teachers, who had been protesting since last week Wednesday, demanded automatic slots.
According to them, they have been in the state government employ for about two years before their sacking, adding that they have requisite qualifications that made them suitable for the job.
However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, in a statement, said six of the teachers had been arrested.
He said, “This offence was committed in the process of an alleged protest by a group, called the ‘Sunset’ teachers in the Ilorin metropolis.
“Not only did they run foul of the COVID-19 guidelines, they also in their multitude blocked the popular Ahmadu Bello Way, Ilorin, thereby preventing lawful users of the road of their rights of passage by disturbing the public peace, which is in contravention of Section 113 of the Penal Code.”
There is palpable fear in the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State as Islamic leaders in the community have threatened a showdown with leaders of the Oro adherents over imposition of a curfew.
The traditionalists were alleged to have imposed a curfew on the people in the area as part of activities marking this year’s Oro-Orisa Oba Festival in Ipokia.
The Chief Imam of the area, Al-Imam Abdulwaliy, said the curfew contravened a court judgement and a peace pact banning such practice during the festival.
Abdulwaliy is the Chief Imam of Umar bin Khatab Mosque, Odan-Aje, behind General Hospital, Idi-Iroko.
The traditionalists in August 2019 stormed the mosque and dispersed Muslim faithful observing afternoon prayers for allegedly acting contrary to their warnings while they observed their ritual.
The traditionalists also allegedly shattered the doors and windows of the mosque.
Stakeholders in the area later met and entered into an agreement to forestall a recurrence of the incident.
Abdulwaliy, popularly known as Omoakin, said the curfew, if not reversed, could plunge the community and the state into a religious crisis.
He noted that the Oro adherents had already announced plans to hold this year’s festival in the daytime, beginning from Saturday.
He said, “It remains surprising that Oro-Orisa Oba members in Ipokia continue to pay deaf ears to different peace agreements reached between Muslims/Christians and traditional adherents in Ipokia.
“Meanwhile, a restriction order has been placed on the celebration of Oro-Orisa Oba Festival during daytime, restricting the celebration to hold between 12am and 4am.
“The judgment of the High Court of Justice, Ilaro Judicial Division (15th August 2017); High Court of Justice , Ipokia Judicial Division (30th January, 2018), peace agreements reached among religious stakeholders in Ipokia Local Government Area (August 2019 and February 2020), all condemned daytime celebration of Oro-Orisa Oba Festival.
“For peace to reign in our society, all the above stand firmly against the celebration of Oro-Orisa Oba Festival during daytime.”
Reacting to the development, the Caretaker Chairman of the council, Kabiru Abolurin, said a peace meeting had been called to address the matter on Thursday at the local government secretariat, Ipokia.
He said security agencies had also been alerted to ensure peace in the state.

A suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed Nicki Minaj's father Robert Maraj turned himself in to the police and was arrested Wednesday morning.
Maraj, 64, was killed on Friday in Mineola, Long Island, after he was struck by a car heading northbound on Roslyn Road at the intersection with Raff Avenue, authorities said.
The Nassau County Police Department announced the arrest of 70-year-old Charles Polevich during a morning press conference.
Polevich surrendered to police after officers tracked him down to his home in Mineola and found his damaged car in the garage.
Detective Lt Stephen Fitzpatrick told reporters that Polveich was driving his 1992 white Volvo station wagon northbound on Roslyn Road when he struck Maraj, who was walking in the road, possibly due to snow pileups on the sidewalk.
Polevich, who spent a lot of time in Guam but has a home in Mineola, initially got out of his car, observed Maraj lying on the ground, then got back behind the wheel and drove to his home, where he then parked his Volvo in the garage and covered it up, according to police.
'He was absolutely aware of what happened,' Fitzpatrick said. 'He looked at the deceased and made the conscious decision to leave instead of dialing 911, instead of calling an ambulance for the man. He went home and secreted the vehicle, so he is well aware of what he did.'
Maraj was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Detectives used surveillance video from the neighborhood to track the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run crash to Polevich's home in the 160 block of Roselle Street in Mineola.
Officers then offered Polevich the opportunity to surrender at police headquarters.
He was charged with leaving the scene of an auto accident and tampering with evidence.
Police said that had Polevich stayed at the scene and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time, he would have avoided criminal charges.
Fitzpatrick told reporters police have been in constant communication with Maraj's family.
On Wednesday, a judge set Polevich's bail at $250,000, suspended his driver's license and ordered him to surrender his passport, reported Newsday. He is due back in court on Friday.
Defence Minister Maj- Gen. Bashir Magashi, on Wednesday sent out a message to Nigerians on how to stop kidnappers and other criminal elements in the country: “stand and face them.”
”Is it (security issue) the responsibility of the military alone? We shouldn’t be cowards,” Magashi added while reacting to the news of the killing of a student and abduction of 27 of his colleagues from a government college in Niger State.
He said it was a thing of surprise to him that Nigerians often took to their heels on hearing gunshots fired by bandits who sometimes strike with only three rounds of ammunition.
Magashi, who was responding to questions on the kidnap of the students, wondered why Nigerians always run away from what he called “minor, minor aggressions.”
He said: “It is the responsibility of everybody to be alert and ensure safety when necessary.
“We shouldn’t be cowards. Sometimes bandits come with about three rounds of ammunition and when they fire shots everybody will run. In our younger days, we stand to fight any form of aggression.
“Why should people run away from minor, minor aggressions?
“We should stand and face them. If these people know that the people have the competence and capability to defend themselves, they will run away.”

The cleric further stated that during the pandemic, he was praying for it not to end because he was prospering and resting.
He said, “In Covid I bought a jet; the third one. I have three. I was praying for Covid-19 not to end because I was resting. While people were complaining, my wife asked, ‘Can life be this sweet?’ Am I talking to somebody here?

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s wife, Ri Sol Ju, has appeared in state media for the first time in more than a year, joining her husband at a concert during one of the country’s biggest holidays.
The official newspaper Rodong Sinmun released photos of the pair at the event on Wednesday to mark the birthday of Kim’s late father and former leader Kim Jong Il.
Ri, who often accompanied Kim to key public events, had not been seen since January last year when she was pictured at an event for the Lunar New Year holiday, stoking speculation over her health and potential pregnancy.
South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) told legislators on Tuesday that Ri appeared to have refrained from outside activities to reduce the risk from coronavirus but was “playing well with their kids.”
The NIS believes Ri and Kim have three children but little is publicly known about them.
