Police discover more ammunitions in Bauchi building marked for demolition

The police in Bauchi State, on Thursday, disclosed that they had discovered more ammunition in a building at the Anguwan Mahaukata area of Bauchi metropolis, making a total of 348 live ammunitions recovered.

It was earlier reported that 204 live ammunitions were recovered by police in the house, which the Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, ordered to be demolished to serve as a deterrent to others.

The state police command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, had revealed to Daily Post on Thursday that four suspects were arrested in connection with the discovery of the ammunition.

However, while briefing journalists Thursday evening at the command’s headquarters in Bauchi, Wakil said that a second search of the building led to the discovery of more ammunition.

“During our second search, we recovered 144 live ammunition of machine gun (MG) again. During the search, we got two live ammunition of anti aircraft, one expended shell of the AA, two expended shells of the MG ammunition,” SP Wakil disclosed.

He added that a uniform belonging to an officer of Nigeria Immigrations Service was also recovered from the house.

“During our investigation, we arrested four suspects in connection to that crime, namely Adamu Suleiman; Mohammed Sanusi; Abba Sa’idu and Yakubu Ahmed. All of them are living in Bauchi metropolis,” he said.

The police spokesman said the ammunition was discovered by one of the suspects arrested, Ahmed Suleiman, 57-year-old, while preparing to move into the house, which he rented.

According to Wakil, “some weeks ago, he (Suleiman) contacted Abba Sa’idu and Yakubu Ahmed that they should look for a house for him.

“While they bargained at the rate of N75,000 of which he paid a sum of N30,000 to enter into the house. He and his family when they came to the house, they wanted to sweep the house where they discovered these (ammunitions),” he stated.

The PPRO said the police were suspecting that the recovered ammunition might belong to an Immigration official, one Suraju Ahmed Suleiman.

“We are suspecting those materials belong to him because our information revealed that he was once working in Maiduguri with the multinational joint task force,” he added.

He, however, called on residents of the state to properly carry out due diligence whenever they want to rent out their houses to any tenant, saying that as a result of the influx of people into Bauchi State, some bad elements used that to cause havoc in the State.

“I want to call on members of the public to understand that when we have strangers that we don’t know where they are coming from, we need to profile them, we need to know why they are here before we accommodate them,” the police spokesman warned.

He further advised the public to always speak out whenever they see anything strange, declaring that people have to be involved in policing their communities.

Why I visited Sunday Igboho – Fani-Kayode

A former minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode on Thursday visited popular Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho at his Soka, Ibadan residence.

However, the PDP chieftain said the visit was to appreciate Igboho for defending the Yoruba nation against killer herdsmen.

Fani-Kayode, who had a closed-door meeting with Sunday Igboho for more than three hours, declared that Igboho is not against any particular tribe, ethnic or people.

The former Minister described Igboho as a freedom fighter. He added that the whole of the Yoruba nation is solidly behind him and his mission to rid the South West of killer herdsmen.

He said: “My purpose is to come and stand side by side, shoulder by shoulder with someone I have immense respect for.

“He has shown the world and most importantly, he has shown Yoruba people that we are not cowards, we are not people who can be pushed around, we are not people who can be pillaged, killed and raped, and those that perpetrate this crime feels at ease in our land.

“So, I have come to express my appreciation and solidarity with somebody that I believe has done the right thing without violating any laws in this country because that is very important. I don’t believe he has done that.

“I believe it is right and proper for every Yoruba leader to show appreciation for the lives he has saved and for his pursuits of people that have been committing crimes, that is the first purpose.

“The second purpose is also to let him also let him know that his message of peace and unity, that is to say, he has nothing Fulani people but he has everything against criminals that comes to our forest in this part of the country to come and kill, those are his enemies, those are the people that are our collective enemies and that is what he is fighting against and there is nothing unlawful in that.”

Meanwhile, Fani-Kayode also reacted to Governor Bala Mohammed’s claims that herdsmen carry AK-47 rifles to protect themselves and their cows.

According to the former minister, the same privilege should also be extended to farmers and communities hosting herders.

He however stressed that the best way to resolve the security challenges posed by the herders/ farmers crisis would be for the government to rise up to its duties.

Fani-Kayode said “A good friend of mine, the Governor of Bauchi state, Bala Mohammed, we served together as ministers, he said a few days ago that herdsmen should be given the right to carry AK47.

“Now, I disagree with that but that was his opinion and like I told him, he is entitled to his opinions and he can voice it.

“If you go by that principle, then it makes absolute sense that if Fulanis are allowed to carry AK-47 to defend their cows and their lives if they feel threatened, then it is also logical for members of the local communities, farmers and each and every one of us should also have that right to defend ourselves against killer herdsmen and against those that are coming to kill us and rape our women.

“So, I am totally and completely behind that and I will like that very much. Why not? We are responsible and decent people, the Americans have that right, it is enshrined in their constitution and if it is also that we could carry arms, perhaps we won’t have the kind of atrocities that are being committed throughout the country and not just throughout the South, even in the North itself, I must tell you, it is unbelievable what is going in terms of these killers killing members of the local population.

“Perhaps that is one way to solve the problem but the best way is for the government itself to rise up and do something about it. That is what we are paying them for, that is what they are there to do, let’s hope they do it and so we don’t have to do it ourselves.”

Fani-Kayode also aligned with the call of the Minister of Defence on the people to defend themselves against banditry and killings saying the likes of Sunday Igboho have proved that the people can stand up for themselves.

Reacting to Fani-Kayode’s visit, Sunday Igboho said: “I don’t have anything to say, for now, my Uncle (Fani-Kayode) has said everything for me.

“What we want in Yorubaland is peace. We don’t want banditry, we don’t want herdsmen to continue to kill our people, we want our people to be free.

“My message to my people in Yorubaland is that they must try to defend themselves. Don’t let anyone come to your farm or your home to come and kill you, you must try to defend yourself which was what the minister said too.”

Rio Ferdinand feels like he's experiencing fatherhood properly for the 'first time' with baby Cree

Rio Ferdinand feels like he's experiencing fatherhood for the first time with his son Cree because he was away so much with his other kids.

The former Manchester United star, 42, welcomed his fourth child with wife Kate before Christmas.

He also has three children Lorenz, 14, Tate, 12, and Tia, nine, who he shared with his late wife, Rebecca, who passed away in 2015. He admitted that his sacrifices as a footballer made him miss out on a lot of their lives.

“We think as dads, we are doing a great job and we are there all the time but we're not. We're just dipping in and out because we are travelling so much," he explained.

"I was probably not there 75 per cent of the time. I was on the road travelling around Europe and playing games. When I was there, was I really there mentally? I used that excuse, 'Oh I've got a game' - I probably left an hour early if I'm being honest."

Rio went on: "For all elite sportsmen, their families play second fiddle to their careers. The family is the sacrifice. I didn't go to countless family functions. I missed birthdays, I missed so many things, I missed the births of one of my kids.

"As a sportsman, you have to accept missing milestones whereas it's reversed a little bit now; my family is the centrepoint of everything. Any job I take, they are very much are made aware of the family dynamics now because that's where my life is at right now. So this is like doing it for the first time properly, so it's really nice in that sense.”

Rio, who married Kate, the 29-year-old former TOWIE star in 2019, admitted that the lockdown had also forced him to be a more hands on parent too.

Judge pardons convicted r*pist because of ill health in Ekiti

A judge of the Ekiti State High Court, Ado-Ekiti, on Wednesday, granted pardon to a r*pist, Dennis Kiyede, just after he convicted him for r*ping a 16-year-old girl.

John Adeyeye, the judge, said he pardoned Mr Kiyede because of his ill health.

The accused was being prosecuted by the police on a one-count-charge of r*pe of his 16-year-old cousin.

In his judgment, Mr Adeyeye noted that the prosecution had established that the offence of r*pe was committed by the accused person.

“I find him guilty of the offence as charged and he is accordingly convicted,” he said.

The judge, however, went on to pardon the convicted man, citing health reasons.

“It is obvious that the accused is very ill as he could no longer stand on his feet,” the judge said.

“The accused person, who has been in custody since he was arrested, must have learnt his lessons.

“In the circumstances, the accused person is hereby cautioned and discharged.”

Police arrests protesting sacked Kwara teachers over covid-19 protocols, disturbing public peace

The Kwara State Police Command said it had arrested six of the 2,414 sacked teachers in the state for allegedly contravening Covid-19 protocols during a protest at the State Government House in Ilorin on Wednesday.

The State Universal Basic Education Board teachers, known as ‘Sunset Workers’ employed in the twilight of former Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed’s administration in February 2019, were sacked by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in December 2020.

Following their disengagement, the government placed advertisement for the employment of 2,701 teachers in its basic schools.

However, the sacked teachers, who had been protesting since last week Wednesday, demanded automatic slots.

According to them, they have been in the state government employ for about two years before their sacking, adding that they have requisite qualifications that made them suitable for the job.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, in a statement, said six of the teachers had been arrested.

He said, “This offence was committed in the process of an alleged protest by a group, called the ‘Sunset’ teachers in the Ilorin metropolis.

“Not only did they run foul of the COVID-19 guidelines, they also in their multitude blocked the popular Ahmadu Bello Way, Ilorin, thereby preventing lawful users of the road of their rights of passage by disturbing the public peace, which is in contravention of Section 113 of the Penal Code.”

Islamic leaders, traditionalists may clash over Oro curfew

There is palpable fear in the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State as Islamic leaders in the community have threatened a showdown with leaders of the Oro adherents over imposition of a curfew.

The traditionalists were alleged to have imposed a curfew on the people in the area as part of activities marking this year’s Oro-Orisa Oba Festival in Ipokia.

The Chief Imam of the area, Al-Imam Abdulwaliy, said the curfew contravened a court judgement and a peace pact banning such practice during the festival.

Abdulwaliy is the Chief Imam of Umar bin Khatab Mosque, Odan-Aje, behind General Hospital, Idi-Iroko.

The traditionalists in August 2019 stormed the mosque and dispersed Muslim faithful observing afternoon prayers for allegedly acting contrary to their warnings while they observed their ritual.

The traditionalists also allegedly shattered the doors and windows of the mosque.

Stakeholders in the area later met and entered into an agreement to forestall a recurrence of the incident.

Abdulwaliy, popularly known as Omoakin, said the curfew, if not reversed, could plunge the community and the state into a religious crisis.

He noted that the Oro adherents had already announced plans to hold this year’s festival in the daytime, beginning from Saturday.

He said, “It remains surprising that Oro-Orisa Oba members in Ipokia continue to pay deaf ears to different peace agreements reached between Muslims/Christians and traditional adherents in Ipokia.

“Meanwhile, a restriction order has been placed on the celebration of Oro-Orisa Oba Festival during daytime, restricting the celebration to hold between 12am and 4am.

“The judgment of the High Court of Justice, Ilaro Judicial Division (15th August 2017); High Court of Justice , Ipokia Judicial Division (30th January, 2018), peace agreements reached among religious stakeholders in Ipokia Local Government Area (August 2019 and February 2020), all condemned daytime celebration of Oro-Orisa Oba Festival.

“For peace to reign in our society, all the above stand firmly against the celebration of Oro-Orisa Oba Festival during daytime.”

Reacting to the development, the Caretaker Chairman of the council, Kabiru Abolurin, said a peace meeting had been called to address the matter on Thursday at the local government secretariat, Ipokia.

He said security agencies had also been alerted to ensure peace in the state.
