The Senate on Tuesday confirmed former Service Chiefs as Ambassadors-Designate after their names were forwarded to the upper chamber by President Muhammadu Buhari recently.
The confirmation of the nominees followed consideration of the report of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The former Service Chiefs confirmed are: General Abayomi G. Olonisakin (Rtd), Ekiti; Lt. General Tukur Y. Buratai (Rtd), Borno; Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete E. Ibas (Rtd), Cross River; and Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar (Rtd), Bauchi;
Also confirmed was Air Vice Marshal Muhammad S. Usman (Rtd), Kano.
Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Adamu Muhammad Bulkachuwa, in his presentation said their appointments were made in line with section 171(40) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
According to him, “their experiences as Service Chiefs and in the military where they rose to the highest ranks in their careers have made them eminently qualified; and that the nominees were very knowledgeable and articulate in their response to questions directed at them by the Committee.”
Bulkachuwa, however, disclosed in the report that “the Committee received petitions against their nominations as Non-Career Ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but the petitions were dismissed.”
The Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, while coming under a point of order, demanded explanation as to the rationale behind the dismissal of the petition against the nominees by the Committee, particularly against the backdrop of the Senate resolutions in the past calling for their removal as Service Chiefs.
Responding, the Senate President pointed out that the Senate resolution demanding their removal was in no way related to President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for the Senate to confirm them as Ambassadors-Designate, adding that, “these are two separate roles.”
“Without prejudice to what the executive will do, where we need to fight the Boko Haram insurgency and banditry, because of their experience in the field, they should be able to interact very closely and sufficiently to advice and create the atmosphere for working together, for partnership and cooperation between Nigeria and those countries.
“So, I think on that scope, the nomination cannot be nullified because we said they should be changed”, Lawan said
The nominees were, thereafter, confirmed after a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, to that effect and seconded by the Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe.
The Senate President in his remarks after the nominees were confirmed advised the Executive arm of government to deploy them to countries where their experiences as former military officers would be required.
Lawan said, “the nominees that we have just confirmed are nominees that have served this great country to the best of their ability as Service Chiefs and today, they have been confirmed as Non-Career Ambassadors.
“Our appeal to the Executive is to make sure that we utilize their experiences as Military men to the best, because we should be able to post them to countries where they can be much more useful in their engagements as Ambassadors.”
Oyindamola Akinrinola, 23, a Nigerian resident of Lawrence, Kansas, has pleaded guilty in federal court for her role in online fraud schemes that targeted victims in the United States.
U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister announced her conviction Monday night, saying she will now face time in federal prison for her crime.
“Akinrinola and her co-conspirator in Nigeria victimised individuals, several elderly, through a variety of online scams,” he said.
“We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to prioritise the investigation and prosecution of fraud schemes like these, no matter where they originate.
“I also take this conviction as an opportunity to reiterate to all Kansans the vulnerability of our senior citizens to scams and con artists, who prey upon them.
“We must all be vigilant to protect our parents, grandparents, elderly relatives, friends and neighbors from such frauds and fraudsters.”
“Scams such as lottery, online dating, and impersonating Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees continue to be a major threat to taxpayers, especially senior citizens,” said J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
“Scammers will use a variety of techniques to cheat taxpayers. TIGTA will do everything within its power to ensure that those involved in the impersonation of IRS employees are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“We appreciate the assistance of the U.S. Department of Justice in this effort,” McAllister said.
According to the charges, Akinrinola, who was granted legal permanent residency in the United States in 2018, was part of a scheme to defraud U.S.-based victims out of money and property.
Akinrinola’s co-conspirator in Nigeria orchestrated several scams, such as tricking victims into believing they were eligible for fictitious awards or establishing purported (but false) romantic relationships with victims and exploiting their affections.
The co-conspirator in Nigeria directed victims to send money to Akinrinola. While in Kansas as a college student, she received funds from the scam victims—in amounts ranging from hundreds of dollars to as much $20,000—via wire transfers, money orders, financial applications, Wal-Mart money grams, Western Union, the United States Postal Service, and various other means.
Akinrinola kept a portion for herself as her reward and sent the bulk of the funds to her co-conspirator in Nigeria. To do so, she generally used the Sendwave, WorldRemit, or Boss Revolution mobile applications.

There was a mild drama on Sunday after the Chief Press Secretary to the Niger State Governor, Mary Noel-Barje, ordered the arrest of the Punch correspondent in the state, Adebayo Ayinde.
Noel-Barje’s latest action is coming after many attempts by the aide to coerce the Punch correspondent into writing stories from her point of view.
There has been no love lost between Punch man and the CPS over the journalist’s independent attitude.
Ayinde said before the Sunday incident, he had been told that the said CPS sent his pictures to some security men in the state.
He said Noel-Barje once told him to leave the Government House but he ignored her.
“There was a time the Chief Press Secretary instructed the security operatives at the Government House to bar me from entering the place,” he said.
Ayinde said the Sunday drama started after one of the security operatives at the Government House wanted to take him out of the place.
The journalist said, “The man beckoned on me and when I approached him, he wanted to take me out of the Government House. He said I must follow him. When other colleagues saw his move, they rallied round and insisted that I would not follow him.
“It was during the argument that we got to know that the CPS told the security aide to arrest me. Many of the security officers confirmed it.
“It took the intervention of other journalists in the state to stop the unethical conduct of the said CPS.
“When they asked her what I did, she decline comments.”
Policemen attached to the Zone 5 Police Command, Benin City, Edo State, have been accused of brutalising a man, Mr Ifeanyi Ikem, and shooting his wife, Ebere, during a raid on their house in Umunede, in the Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Punch Metro gathered that the incident happened on Friday around 10pm.
Both husband and wife told Punch that over six officers, who came in three vehicles on mufti, allegedly dismantled their window burglar-proof bars to enter their apartment.
Ifeanyi said, “I just put off my generator so I could go to bed that night. I was about to lie on my bed when I heard footsteps and my dog barking. I saw two men — one wearing complete native attire and the other was on jean trousers and a jean jacket.
“They requested to know the occupants of the house, but I kept quiet because I did not know them. So, my wife asked from inside to know who they were. They replied that she should call her husband that somebody was looking for him.
“My wife told them that her husband was asleep. In the process of my wife interrogating them, they frequently called one Sunny.
“They started forcing the glass on the window and pulling down the burglar-proof bars. I told my wife and children to shout. Their shouting made people hear that something was happening in the house.
“Three men entered first, so we started struggling. I saw them with guns and I thought within me that these people wanted to kill me. They said there was something that I did. They said one Prince Paradise sent them that I destroyed his car and building and I told them that I did not know anything about it.
“As they saw that people were coming, they started shooting, while still dragging me. Because my wife didn’t allow them to take me away, they shot her. As my wife was shouting that she had been hit, I held on to them. They started shooting, as they ran into their vehicles and zoomed off.”

A mortuary attendant in Oghara, Delta State, has been arrested by the police over the missing corpse of a 58-year-old woman, Mrs Patience Amughoro.
The deceased woman was said to have died late last year after a brief illness and her corpse kept in a private hospital mortuary at Oghara, while the family prepared for burial.
Sources said the family was stunned when, on Saturday morning after all preparations had been put in place, they arrived at the mortuary only to discover that the body was missing.
A family member, who identified himself only as Okiemute, said the mortician had earlier presented a body to the family and on close observation, they found out it was not that of Mrs Amughoro.
“That was when he (morgue attendant) began pacing up and down, looking for the body. That was when he told us that the body was missing.
“We were shocked. We had made arrangements to give our auntie a good send-forth. It hurts that we don’t have her body,” Okiemute said.
He noted that the family later reported the incident to the police.
Another family member, who did not want his name in print, wondered how the body disappeared from the mortuary.
“The disappearance of her body is tormenting my family. I have never heard of a corpse developing legs and leaving a mortuary,” he added.

A security guard, Uchena Harrison, has been electrocuted while attempting to pluck pawpaw from a tree at his workplace in the Abule Oshun area of Lagos State.
Punch Metro gathered that the 56-year-old and four other security guards were on duty on Friday when he reportedly became hungry and without the knowledge of his colleagues, proceeded to the pawpaw tree.
It was learnt that Harrison placed a ladder on the tree and after climbing it, used an iron rod to pluck the fruit.
Speaking to Punch Metro, a resident, Jubril Adesoji, said Harrison mistakenly used the iron rod to hit a naked wire which passed through the tree.
“The shock he suffered during the electrocution threw him away from the ladder and he landed on the ground. He died on the spot,” he added.
A source said Harrison’s remains were later found around the pawpaw tree.
The source said, “Initially, his colleagues were searching for him until one of them suggested that they should check him around the pawpaw tree. When they got there around 10pm, his corpse was found lying on the floor. About five of the security guards were on duty on that day. From what we gathered, his corpse was deposited in the Badagry General Hospital mortuary.”

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Sunday regretted that Nigerians had shed enough blood over issues that could have been peacefully resolved.
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President spoke while reacting to the violence in Gombe State arising from the Billiri chieftaincy tussle.
The statement was titled, ‘Billiri chieftaincy tussle: President Buhari condemns violence, calls for maximum restraint to avoid escalation’.
Shehu quoted the President as expressing “great shock and deep concern” over the incident.
The President said, “I’m seriously disturbed by the outbreak of violence in Gombe State and call on the parties involved to exercise maximum restraint to avoid escalation.
“The easy resort to violence is uncalled for because there are enough avenues to resolve differences amicably without threatening law and order.
“In a circle of violence, there are no winners, except losers. Muslims and Christians should avoid the temptation of resorting to violence in order to express their grievances.
“Nigerians have shed enough blood over issues that could have been peacefully resolved. I appeal to the two parties to sheathe their swords for the sake of peaceful coexistence. Gombe has enjoyed relative religious harmony for decades and you shouldn’t allow hoodlums destroy this positive record.”
