PDP WARNS Rochas Okorocha, Uzodinma... don’t turn Imo into a theatre of war

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has condemned the clash between supporters of Senator Rochas Okorocha and the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, urging the duo not to turn the state into a theatre of war.

The supporters of Okorocha and Uzodinma had clashed on Sunday over the sealing of Royal Spring Palm Estate Hotel, Akachi, by the state government. Two persons were reportedly killed during the clash.

The party, through its Publicity Secretary Ogubundu Nwadike, said it was utterly disgusting that the present APC government in the state has turned Imo into a terror zone, theatre of war and conflict.

“The recent violence perpetrated by supporters of Senator Rochas Okorocha and Governor Hope Uzodinma has stirred up tension and apprehension in the state thereby toppling the atmosphere of saturated peace and tranquillity.

“It is indeed, highly despicable that under the present administration, Imo State which used to be the centre and cynosure of public peace and orderliness has turned into a jungle of terror where hooliganism, rascality, thuggery and abuse of the dignity of human peace have become the order of the day,” the party stated.

Also yesterday, protesters under the umbrella of Coalition of All Progressives Congress (APC) Groups have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and Chairman of the party’s Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Governor Mai Mala Buni, to resolve the crisis bedevilling the Imo State chapter of the party.

The protesters, who carried banners and placards with different inscriptions such as ‘Restore peace in Imo APC’, among others on Monday, in Abuja, said it would be detrimental to the party if the political differences between the two political bigwigs in the state were not resolved by the party’s leaders.

Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora, Dr. Kingman Chikelu, said they had submitted 16 complaints to embassies on the crisis in Imo State chapter of the APC, and urged the party to end the problem.

Representative of Arewa Youth Consultative Council, Toyib Ibrahim also in his speech said, “lt is worrisome that the future of Nigeria is threatened in the hands of politicians, who are allowed to bend the laws or use the agents of the law to intentionally attack political opponents.”

I’m gay, fear made me deny it – Ghanaian journalist, Ignatius Annor comes out on live TV

A Ghanaian journalist and LGBTQI+ activist has come out as gay for the first time.

According to Ignatius Annor, he had kept this to himself because of fear of losing his job and the stigma that it could generate.

“This is going to be the very first time that I am using your medium to say that not only am I an activist for the rights of Africa’s s3xual minorities, what you will call the LGBTQI community, but I am gay.

“Obviously, I denied it because I was afraid of losing my job, I was working at an incredible Television station in Accra and also for the fear of what would happen to me personally,” Mr Annor said on JoyNews via Zoom.

Speaking on PM: Express Monday, the pro LGBTQI+ activist said members of his community are unhappy “because you are not allowed to openly say who you are.”

“What my community is asking for is the opportunity love like all humanity loves, particularly in the case of Ghana heterosexuals,” he told Ayisha Ibrahim.

There has been widespread debate following the opening of an Accra office by the group in Ghana.

It has since triggered the resurfacing of concerns over activities of the community with calls from a cross-section of Ghanaians including the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values and the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) to have the group’s activities stopped.

But according to Mr Annor, that would be a breach of their human rights.

Woman confesses to sleeping with snakes and eating human flesh on live radio show

A Nairobi resident has left listeners of Radio Maisha’s morning show gobsmacked after claiming to have bedded snakes and eaten corpses.

In an interview with Emmanuel Mwashumbe and Shuga Boy, Cecilia Wambui, who resides in Umoja Estate, narrated how she ended up committing the bizarre acts. According to the Laikipia-born mother of one, her materially impoverished upbringing pushed her to date well-off men.

“I was 17, and in Form Four when I met a driver who made a pass at me. Coming from a very poor family, I was impressed that he owned a TV, gas cooker and radio.

I eloped with him but we broke up within three months. I was pregnant for him but I terminated the pregnancy,” Cecilia narrated.

The abortion would mark the first of many, with Cecilia saying that she’s unsure of how many times she’s aborted.

From age 17 to 25, Cecilia said that she’s been married around five times and bedded over a hundred men. “All the men I’ve dated were well-off and they were all ‘sponsors’. I have done so many abortions I can’t recall all of them.”

According to the 26-year-old, things took a turn for the worst in 2019 after she was imprisoned for four months. While in prison, she sought to turn her life around.

“I sought to get saved and was introduced to a fake church where I used to sleep with spirits. I could just sit and find myself in mortuaries and burials. I joined the church in February and didn’t feel the need to sleep with men as spirits would satisfy my needs.

It got to a point where I was addicted and wanted to see gory images like dead bodies being washed in the morgue,” she claimed.

Adding: “They had brainwashed me; the pastor told me to give him all household items as they were bought by 'sponsors'. They organized marriage with one of the church members saying 'heaven had decided that I marry him'- we had known each other for three weeks.

Whenever I slept, I dreamed of the pastor telling me to touch his privates, and a black snake would appear. I used to enjoy it and felt it was okay. The snake would appear whenever I closed my eyes; I feared sleeping in matatus. I started getting sick but the pastor told me I should not go to the hospital as 'God would heal me'.”

Cecilia then realised all was not well and left the church in October 2020. She also parted ways with her husband, who she described as being scary, as she would wake up in the middle of the night and find him sitting on a chair, staring at her.

Refusing to name the church for fear of reprisals, Cecilia claimed that five other women - in the church -  were undergoing a similar ordeal. She’s currently looking for employment as she lost her job while attending the ‘cultic’ church.

Police officers filmed flogging Aba resident with machete [Video]

Police officers in Aba, Abia State, have been caught on camera using a machete to flog a resident.

A video posted on Twitter, on Tuesday, by Harrison (@harrisonmbamara), showed four police officers forcing a man and a woman to do ‘frog jumps’ in the middle of a quiet road.

The man was later asked to lie down on the tarred road, while an officer used a machete to flog him repeatedly.

The officers could be heard, from the clip, shouting at their victims who appeared helpless.

It is unclear why the two were being punished.

But from the voices from the background, from the people who were doing the secret recording, it appeared the assault was linked to the Tuesday attack on a police station in the city.

Meanwhile, the Abia State Government, through its Commissioner for Information, John Kalu, has also reacted to the video.

“While we sympathise with the Police over the cowardly attack by yet to be identified hoodlums, we will not tolerate acts of brutality against innocent Abians and residents.

“The state government will investigate the authenticity of the video with a view to punishing whoever is found to have unleashed brutality on innocent citizens.

“We call on the police not to succumb to the temptation to engage in knee jerk response but to painstakingly identify the culprits and bring them to justice,” Mr Kalu told Premium Times, Tuesday.

Nigeria’s human rights record has continued to deteriorate, despite more than two decades of democratic rule.

Citizens, frequently brutalised by security officers, hardly get justice because of Nigeria’s poor criminal justice system.

Covid-19: ‘Why Nigerian children won’t be vaccinated’

The Federal Government has explained why Nigerian children are not been considered for the coming Covid-19 vaccines.

The Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, said that the vaccines have not been proven to be safe for children.

He was speaking on Monday in Abuja at the joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19.

This is as he said that the much-expected Covid-19 vaccines will hopefully arrive Nigeria between February 22nd and next week Monday.

“What the evidence has shown is that the vaccines have been tried in individuals above 15 years of age for the Pfizer vaccine and above 18 years in the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The finding is that these are only the individuals that the vaccines are safe to tried on.

“I am sure that there is data to give on the effects of VOCID-19 in children. However, from the data that has been shared by the NCDC, people who are most affected by Covid-19 are those that are adults or those that have co-morbidity, especially the elderly,” Shuaib said.

Speaking on the arrival of the vaccines, he said, “It is not our intention to postpone the arrival date of the vaccines, however any change in the delivery date will be properly communicated to Nigerians.”

Breaking: Heavy explosions, gunshots in parts of Maiduguri

Heavy explosions and the sound of gunshots have engulfed some parts of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The explosions which started at about 5:45 pm up to the time of filing in this report were heard around Fori general area near Giwa military barracks.

Sources said, armed insurgents were behind the attack attempting to infiltrate the city, as troops engaged them.

Maiduguri has been long without witnessing any Boko Haram invasion, even as the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru last Sunday while on Operational Visit to the state gave 48 hours ultimatum to troops to recapture Marte Local Government Area which is currently under the control of Boko Haram.

Igboho speaks for 99% of Yoruba people - Fani-Kayode

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, says popular Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho, speaks for 99 per cent of the Yoruba people of the South-West region.

He stated this on Tuesday while featuring on a Punch Live programme

Fani-Kayode, who recently visited Igboho at his Ibadan residence, said the activist was against criminals in Oyo State and not against the Fulani stock.

Sunday Igboho had earlier  issued a seven-day quit notice to herdsmen accused of kidnapping, rape, farmland destruction, amongst other crimes in the Ibarapa area of Oyo and enforced same.

He had also confronted herdsmen accused of terrorising farmers and residents in the Yewa area of Ogun State.

Some persons have, however, disagreed with his method, saying it could ignite communal clashes.

Speaking on Tuesday, Fani-Kayode said, “My understanding in what he (Igboho) did was not to give quit notices to nomads; what he did was to give quit notices to kidnappers, murderers, killers and people who butcher our people in the South-West regularly.”

The former minister said Igboho gave quit notice to those that committed “terrible crimes” who “r.a.p.e, maim, destroy and kidnap” and “not to Fulanis, Hausas.”

“Make no mistake, Igboho speaks the mind of 99 per cent of Yoruba people. Many will not say this publicly but he does. What I won’t accept and I know this is not his position, is that he should target Hausa-Fulani people in the South-West who have done nothing wrong. It is not about targeting people, I will never be part of that simply because people have the right to live in any part of the country,” Fani-Kayode added.

#EndSARS: Lagos Panel summons IGP

The Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up by the Lagos State government to investigate the October 2020 Lekki shooting and other cases of police brutality by the disbanded Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) has summoned the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to appear before it.

Adamu was on Tuesday, Feb 23, 201 ordered to appear before the panel to answer questions concerning a petition which was filed before the panel.

Doris Okuwobi, head of the judicial panel, gave this order following the prayer of Debo Adewale, the counsel to the petitioner, that the IGP be summoned.

The petitioner, Adewale Adewuyi, was carried into the venue of the panel by three men.

Debo Adeleke, the petitioner’s lawyer, alleged that the police have refused to release 26 acres of farmland seized from the petitioner since 2013.

Adeleke asked the panel to summon the IGP so that the police could be compelled to release the seized farmland.

He told the panel that the police invaded the farmland located at Age-Mowo near Badagry on December 17, 2013, and destroyed it.

He said the destruction of his client’s farm made his health deteriorate to the extent that he could not move or feed himself.

Adeleke said a federal court judgment in 2017 ordered the police to release the farmland and to negotiate with his client the amount to pay for damages and physical assault.

He said the police have refused to release the farmland or engage in alternative dispute resolution, despite efforts to compel them to do so.

Adeleke asked the panel to use its credibility to summon the IGP, the commissioner of police in charge of the legal department, force headquarters, assistant inspector-general of police, co-operative police college, Ikeja, and other parties mentioned in the petition to compel them to release the farmland.

“That order is needed, although I’m not supposed to say this but this is a fact-finding panel, we need to summon the IGP, so that he can tell the commissioner of police to release this land to us. They are not using the law, it is just there,” he said.

“Everybody fears the Lagos state judicial panel on restitution. We will be grateful if my lord will issue the order.”

However, Cyril Ejiofor, police counsel, asked that he should be given two weeks to meet with the legal department so that the issue will be resolved.

Doris Okuwobi, chairperson of the panel, ordered that the parties mentioned in the petition should be served summons.

The case was adjourned till March 30.

Hoodlums set ablaze Abia police station, kill policeman, free suspects

The Abayi police station in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State was burnt down by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums in the early morning hours of Tuesday.

The hoodlums also burnt all the operational vehicles parked within the premises of the police station.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident to The Punch.

He said the hoodlums numbering over one hundred had attacked the police station from a nearby compound with the intention of taking over the station.

The Police spokesman added that the attackers who freed some suspects in the police station threw petrol into the station before gaining entrance into the facility.

He said some policemen on duty engaged the hoodlums in a gun battle, which resulted in the death of one policeman and some casualties on the side of the hoodlums, while many of them fled with bullet injuries.

Ogbonna revealed that some of the hoodlums had been arrested by the police, while a manhunt had been launched for those at large.

He urged all health facilities in the state especially in Aba to report anybody with suspected

bullet injuries that come for treatment to the police.

He said, “Hospitals can give treatment to people with suspected bullet injures to revive them, but they should do well to report such a person to a nearby police station.”

Makinde orders immediate reopening of Shasha market

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has ordered the immediate reopening of Shasha market.

This is as the Governor also orders the immediate closure of the market annex which was established in Iroko while the Shasha crises broke out.

The Governor also said he awaits assurance and advise from the security agencies enforcing curfew in the market before he would lift the curfew.

The decision is coming barely two weeks after the market was shut down due to crisis between traders that led to the loss of lives and property in the Akinyele local government area of the state.

The Iroko market has being fingered by the Shasha traders to have being established by suspected individuals who are fuelling the Shasha market crisis in order to create a competition for the Shasha market.

Makinde who earlier dropped the hint of the reopening also gave the directive during a meeting with the leaders of the two warring communities at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to the governor, the decision to reopen the market was necessitated by the declining economic situation and the peculiarities associated with the state, adding that he would reopen the market for the traders to continue with their commercial activities.

He said: “Considering the economic situation and the peculiarities we have with us, I have heard what you said, and we will immediately reopen the Shasha market. They will bring bulldozer to the market today.

Drama in Senate as Senator Adeyemi calls Abia Governor ‘drunk’

There was mild drama in the Senate on Tuesday following comment by Senator Smart Adeyemi referring to Abia Governor as a “drunk.”

Adeyemi, while contributing to a motion on “Safe School Initiative in Nigeria,” referred to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as a “champagne drinking man”.

The lawmaker was apparently reacting to a social media post that had cast an aspersion on Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello linked to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South.

However, Abaribe expressed surprise at Adeyemi’s outburst denying ever making the statement in question.

Adeyemi had said that while some Governors like Bello were committed to the welfare and protection of their people, the people of Abia are being governed by ‘drunkards.’

He said: “Despite that some Governors are doing their best, we are lucky to have a governor who has taken the issue of security as a serious priority.

“We are bordered by nine states but we had an experience of the unfortunate incidents that are happening in neighbouring states.

“Some governors are committed to the protection of their people. In my state, the governor awarded contracts for the renovations of schools and provides security services to them.

“In some states of Nigeria today, where we have highly intelligent people, highly educated people, very enterprising people, like Abia, they are governed by drunkards. The governor of Abia is a champagne drinking man.

“Abia people are impoverished more than ever before. Abia people are unfortunate.”

At this point, Senate President Ahmad Lawan cautioned him against the use of un-parliamentary language.

Abaribe expressed surprise over Adeyemi’s comment and urged him colleague to apologise to Ikpeazu.

Abaribe said: “Mr President, I will like to make a clarification. Unfortunately, what has happened here today is one of the problems that you see on social media. I never made any comments on the governor of Kogi State. Never.

“What has happened is what we see going on today. People write something and tag your name to it. And if you don’t ask question, you will not know whether you actually said it or not.

“And I see so many things tag to me but I don’t talk. The last time I saw Nuhu Ribadu, I also spoke to him. Something was tag to his name that was very deleterious.

“I’m very surprised that my good friend and colleague decided to open up on the governor of Abia for something I never said.”

Lawan noted the “air has now been cleared” and enjoined Senator Abaribe to address the motion on the floor.

Abaribe agreed with Lawan but insisted that Adeyemi must apologise to Abia Governor “for the very bad statement he made that had no basis.”

Senate confirms Buratai, other ex-Service Chiefs as Ambassadors-Designate

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed former Service Chiefs as Ambassadors-Designate after their names were forwarded to the upper chamber by President Muhammadu Buhari recently.

The confirmation of the nominees followed consideration of the report of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The former Service Chiefs confirmed are: General Abayomi G. Olonisakin (Rtd), Ekiti; Lt. General Tukur Y. Buratai (Rtd), Borno; Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete E. Ibas (Rtd), Cross River; and Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar (Rtd), Bauchi;

Also confirmed was Air Vice Marshal Muhammad S. Usman (Rtd), Kano.

Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Adamu Muhammad Bulkachuwa, in his presentation said their appointments were made in line with section 171(40) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

According to him, “their experiences as Service Chiefs and in the military where they rose to the highest ranks in their careers have made them eminently qualified; and that the nominees were very knowledgeable and articulate in their response to questions directed at them by the Committee.”

Bulkachuwa, however, disclosed in the report that “the Committee received petitions against their nominations as Non-Career Ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but the petitions were dismissed.”

The Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, while coming under a point of order, demanded explanation as to the rationale behind the dismissal of the petition against the nominees by the Committee, particularly against the backdrop of the Senate resolutions in the past calling for their removal as Service Chiefs.

Responding, the Senate President pointed out that the Senate resolution demanding their removal was in no way related to President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for the Senate to confirm them as Ambassadors-Designate, adding that, “these are two separate roles.”

“Without prejudice to what the executive will do, where we need to fight the Boko Haram insurgency and banditry, because of their experience in the field, they should be able to interact very closely and sufficiently to advice and create the atmosphere for working together, for partnership and cooperation between Nigeria and those countries.

“So, I think on that scope, the nomination cannot be nullified because we said they should be changed”, Lawan said

The nominees were, thereafter, confirmed after a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, to that effect and seconded by the Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe.

The Senate President in his remarks after the nominees were confirmed advised the Executive arm of government to deploy them to countries where their experiences as former military officers would be required.

Lawan said, “the nominees that we have just confirmed are nominees that have served this great country to the best of their ability as Service Chiefs and today, they have been confirmed as Non-Career Ambassadors.

“Our appeal to the Executive is to make sure that we utilize their experiences as Military men to the best, because we should be able to post them to countries where they can be much more useful in their engagements as Ambassadors.”

23-year old Nigerian lady Oyindamola Akinrinola convicted in US for online fraud

Oyindamola Akinrinola, 23, a Nigerian resident of Lawrence, Kansas, has pleaded guilty in federal court for her role in online fraud schemes that targeted victims in the United States.

U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister announced her conviction Monday night, saying she will now face time in federal prison for her crime.

“Akinrinola and her co-conspirator in Nigeria victimised individuals, several elderly, through a variety of online scams,” he said.

“We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to prioritise the investigation and prosecution of fraud schemes like these, no matter where they originate.

“I also take this conviction as an opportunity to reiterate to all Kansans the vulnerability of our senior citizens to scams and con artists, who prey upon them.

“We must all be vigilant to protect our parents, grandparents, elderly relatives, friends and neighbors from such frauds and fraudsters.”

“Scams such as lottery, online dating, and impersonating Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees continue to be a major threat to taxpayers, especially senior citizens,” said J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

“Scammers will use a variety of techniques to cheat taxpayers. TIGTA will do everything within its power to ensure that those involved in the impersonation of IRS employees are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

“We appreciate the assistance of the U.S. Department of Justice in this effort,” McAllister said.

According to the charges, Akinrinola, who was granted legal permanent residency in the United States in 2018, was part of a scheme to defraud U.S.-based victims out of money and property.

Akinrinola’s co-conspirator in Nigeria orchestrated several scams, such as tricking victims into believing they were eligible for fictitious awards or establishing purported (but false) romantic relationships with victims and exploiting their affections.

The co-conspirator in Nigeria directed victims to send money to Akinrinola. While in Kansas as a college student, she received funds from the scam victims—in amounts ranging from hundreds of dollars to as much $20,000—via wire transfers, money orders, financial applications, Wal-Mart money grams, Western Union, the United States Postal Service, and various other means.

Akinrinola kept a portion for herself as her reward and sent the bulk of the funds to her co-conspirator in Nigeria. To do so, she generally used the Sendwave, WorldRemit, or Boss Revolution mobile applications.
