I suffered from depression, attempted suicide – Nancy Isime speaks about losing mum

Nigerian actress, model and media personality Nancy Isime has said she lost her mum when she was five years old and attempted suicide as a child.

The 29-year-old stated this in an interview published by BBC Pidgin on Wednesday.

She said she started working at the age of 17.

“I lost my mum at five. I didn’t really have a smooth childhood. I suffered from depression and attempted my first suicide in childhood. It was actually the only but I was able to go through all that and I’m still here today.

“Some people had time to grow through life but I had to mature in time. Losing your mum at the age of five, you’re exposed to a lot of things you’re not supposed to experience. I started working at the age of 17,” she said.

Nancy also spoke on how she got her signature hair.

“As weirdly as it sounds, one day my hair was itching me and I fixed so the heat was much and right there and then I decided to loose the hair.

” When I was small my father cut my hair almost throughout my childhood and I hated it, I felt I was an ugly child, so I never thought the hair will be my style,” she said.

Angry deceased man’s relatives attack policeman at panel

There was pandemonium on Thursday at the Independent Investigative Panel on Human Rights Violations by operatives of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad and other police units as relations of a deceased victim raised objections to the testimonies of ASP Kingsley Ojeomokhai.

The enraged family members said the police officer was telling lies against their late brother, Festus Idehen, while he was giving his evidence on the circumstances that led to his death in 2016.

A statement by the Head of Media, NHRC, Hajiya Fatima Agwai Mohammed, said they called him names and rained curses on him, saying, “You will see.”

Ojeomokhai, in his testimony before the panel, claimed that late Festus had tried to incite a mob against him after labelling him an armed robber before he identified himself as a policeman.

The policeman also alleged that the mob that the man wanted to use against him later confronted Festus when they learnt that he was a crime suspect.

The testimonies of the ASP led to the emotional outbursts by the deceased’s relations, who called him a liar.

Ojeomokhai explained that on August 28, 2016, he was assigned with four other officers to investigate a case of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery involving two suspects, Lawal Mohammed and Abubakar Mohammed.

The policemen claimed that Lawal in his statement said they sold a stolen Mercedes 350 to one Onyeka in Kafanchan, who is an in-law to Festus.

Led by Umoh Inah, counsel for the police, the ASP alleged that on September 3, 2016, Lawal, a police team, including himself, moved to Onyeka’s house to arrest him.

He said Onyeka admitted to selling the said car to Festus, adding that the police team directed him to call Festus and under the pretext of having a laptop for sale and that Festus agreed to meet him at Gonin Gora, a suburb of Kaduna.

Ojeomokhai said, “Festus came to Gonin Gora in the stolen Mercedes and when he sighted us, he raised the alarm and called us armed robbers.”

He said a mob gathered to attack the team and after identifying himself and informing the mob that Festus was using a stolen vehicle, the mob went after Festus.

At the end of hearing, Justice Suleiman Galadima (retd) directed the respondents’ counsel to make available the hospital admission and treatment records of both the police clinic and the Asokoro General Hospital at the next adjourned date.

Further hearing was adjourned till April 7, 2021.

S.e.x tape of LAUTECH lecturer leaked

The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) is currently topping the Twitter trend in the wake of another s.e.x tape allegedly involving one of its lecturers.

The footage which was put out on the microblogging platform shows a middle-aged man been filmed by a third party having his way with a lady whose face was shielded.

This is coming weeks after a young lady alleged to be a LAUTECH student was filmed in a series of leaked s.e.x footage.

However, the authorities of the university had denied knowledge of her, decrying how the public soil the name of the school.

“We don’t have anything to do with the lady you mentioned. There are many of them who did not even complete secondary school education but would go on social media to claim they are LAUTECH students,” the varsity had stated.

“We don’t know her. LAUTECH is a school for serious-minded students and staff and not her type.”

As the new video went viral — with #LAUTECH topping the trends — some Nigerians took to the social media platform to air their mixed reactions.

The varsity is yet to react as of the time of this report.

Twitter considers charging users for special content, in revenue push

Twitter on Thursday, said  it plans to offer a subscription service in which users would pay for special content from high-profile accounts, part of an economic model to diversify its revenue.

The globally popular social media platform announced the potential new Super Follows service at its annual investor meeting, as it searches for new revenue streams beyond targeted advertising.

“Exploring audience funding opportunities like Super Follows will allow creators and publishers to be directly supported by their audience and will incentivize them to continue creating content that their audience loves,” a Twitter spokesperson told AFP.

Top Twitter executives discussed Super Follows while outlining goals and plans for the near future during the streamed presentation.

“We are examining and rethinking the incentives of our service — the behaviors that our product features encourage and discourage as people participate in conversation on Twitter,” the spokesperson said.

Super Follows was described during the presentation as a way for Twitter audiences to financially support creators and receive newsletters, exclusive content and even virtual badges in exchange.

Twitter, which currently makes money from ads and promoted posts, might be able to add additional revenue via the Super Follows transactions.

Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi was not convinced people will be inclined to pay for special content on Twitter.

Such a model makes sense for content on platforms like YouTube, where hours of craftsmanship might be devoted to producing entertaining videos, but it is debatable whether the same could be said for tweets on Twitter, she said.

No timeline was given for when Super Follows might become a feature, but it is expected that the tech giant will make further announcements in the coming months.

Adeyemi said that the unions would continue to monitor the agreements that had been reached that had a timeline and hoped that the government would implement its own side of the bargain.

Professor links lower risk of contracting Covid-19 in Nigeria to “O’’ Blood Group

Professor Temitope Alonge, Coordinator, Oyo State Covid-19 Isolation Centres, said studies conducted on Covid-19 sufferers indicated that people with ‘O’ blood group might not even suffer severe illnesses including organ complications.

Mr. Alonge told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday, that blood Group O, which is significantly represented among African populations, might explain the reason why Africa had fared better than the West since the emergence of Covid-19.

“Many Africans have blood Group O. This may explain why the severity of Covid-19 infections is low in Nigeria. This is apart from the availability of Vitamin D from sunshine,’’ he said.

Vitamin D is called “the sunshine vitamin’’. When the skin is exposed to sunlight, it makes vitamin D from cholesterol. The sun’s ultraviolet rays hit cholesterol in the skin cells, providing the energy for vitamin D synthesis to occur, he said.

FG not helping us to rescue schoolboys – Niger Governor

The Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Bello, said he has received “little or no support” from the federal government towards the rescue of the 42 persons abducted from Government Science College, Kagara, last week.

Bandits abducted the persons, including 27 students, three workers and 12 members of their families in the school located in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to a statement by the governor’s media aide, Mary Noel-Berje, on Thursday, Mr Bello made the remarks during a visit by a former Abia governor, Orji Kalu, in Minna.

Mr Kalu, who was in Niger to sympathise with the governor over the incident, had called on the federal government to set up a joint security committee to expedite action for the release of the abducted persons.

In his response, Mr Bello “supported the call from Mr Kalu, pointing out that at the moment, he has little or no support from the government at the centre but reiterated the state government’s commitments to securing the release of the abductees,” the statement noted.

The statement, however, did not elaborate on the area of support the federal government was failing to offer.

Nigeria is a failed state where nothing works - Edwin Clark fires

Ijaw leader Edwin Clark has said that Nigeria is a failed state because things no longer work properly in the nation.

The erstwhile federal commissioner for information made this disclosure on Wednesday at the National Restructuring Summit in Abuja.

He maintained that Nigeria's 1999 constitution is operating under a scam.

“Nigeria is a failed state, failed state in the sense that nothing works anymore. Bring the best expert to come and manage Nigeria under the 1999 constitution it will not yield any result because the 1999 constitution is a scam,” Vanguard Newspaper quoted the elder statesman to have said.

“The last constitution we had in this country was the 1963 constitution, the 1999 constitution was dictated by the military and handed down to Nigeria and that is why nothing works.”

“Some people who run Nigeria were beneficiaries of the 1963 constitution, beneficiaries of true federalism,” Mr. Clark asserted.

The Niger-Delta leader explained that the citizens of the oil-rich region have suffered try most injustice in Nigeria which could only be corrected via restructuring through federalism and resources control.

“A situation where we can control our resources and pay tax to the center, other regions have enjoyed this before. So we have suffered the most in Nigeria, we are not saying we should have everything that belongs to us, but we the people of Niger-Delta believe in restructuring through federalism,” Mr. Edwin said.

FG takes over Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Kebbi

The Federal Government has taken over the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Kebbi, Alhaji Abubakar Ladan, the state Commissioner for Works and Transport, has said.

Ladan who made the disclosure to newsmen today in Birnin Kebbi said the airport had not been sold to any private individual, contrary to rumour.

“There is no iota of truth in the rumour going round that the state government is planning to sell the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport to a private individual.

“All the airports in the country are on the exclusive list. There is no way any state government can convert them as their own or sell them to individuals,’’ the commissioner said.

Ladan explained that the federal government had taken over 10 of such airports after their completion by state governments.

He said: “The airports include those of Ekiti, Gombe, Anambra, Nassarawa, Kebbi, Jigawa, Ebonyi and Benue States, among others.

“I don’t know how the story came about that the airport (Sir Ahamdu Bello International Airport) had been sold.

“Who was it sold to? I want to use this occasion to tell you the true story of the airport.

“The aviation sector is in the exclusive list and any state that wants to construct an airport must get a clear approval from the federal government.

“So, once you construct the airport, you only have the manager, but the technical crew handling the airport is federal government’s staff and those of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

“You do not have the right to regulate the airport. We only agreed to allow the federal government to take over the airport because of management issue and other things.

“It is not the issue of sales; federal government took over the airport of Kebbi State and we demanded that the amount we used to construct it be refunded to the state.’’

The commissioner said that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the refund in March 2020.

We will starve schoolboys to death – Abductors of Kagara students threatens

Abductors of the 27 students and 15 workers of Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State,  have threatened to starve them to death if the ransom they are demanding is not paid on time.

One of the abductors stated this in an audio recording made available to Punch on Wednesday by a prominent Islamic cleric,  Sheik Ahmad Gumi.

In the audio recording, the abductor, who spoke in Hausa, was heard conversing with a negotiator, identified by Gumi as a top official of the school.

He rejected N2.7m offered him as ransom for the 27 abductees.

The bandit stated, “I don’t have food for them. If anybody dies among them, we will tell you where to go and pick the corpse.

“You know these children are hungry. I don’t have food to give them, only water if they are going to die, let them die.”

The negotiator said it would be difficult for him to get the phone numbers of all the parents as requested by the bandits.

The bandit responded that he was aware that many security agents and vehicles had been deployed in Kagara, vowing they would not succeed in rescuing the abductees.

He asked,  “You think I don’t know what you people are doing? I can tell you how many security vehicles are in Kagara as we speak.

“It is with the help of the people of the city that intruders can overrun the city. Don’t you know that? The person who gave us this business is there among you. He is there with you. Wherever you go, he is watching you. If you want to do this deal, go ahead. From God we come and to him we will return.

“Even if you put together the entire security forces of Nigeria in Kagara, I have eyes all over Kagara. Whichever step you take in Nigeria, I swear,  I will know. You people are saying they should not pay us, that if they pay us, we will use to money to buy weapons.  With whose money did we buy our weapons? If we don’t have weapons, you will just send security agents to kill us and take the children.”

Appealing to the bandit, the negotiator stated, “They (parents) have agreed to pay N2.7m. Each parent will pay N100,000 .”

But the abductor rejected the offer threatening to unleash terror on Kagara.

The abductor stated, “If I want Kagara to be in peace, it will be in peace. If it is not going to be in peace, it will go in pieces from here until Ilorin. If I die in this process, I have children that I have instructed that if I die that I don’t want Kagara to be peaceful if you don’t do as I say. Even if I die, nobody will come into Kagara.”

He also berated governors, who said they should not be paid ransom.

He added, “Governors are saying we should not be given money because we are going to use it to buy guns; guns that Allah provides and you are boasting about.

“In all of your (Niger State) madness, you are not up to Zamfara. It was compelled to accept our terms and talk less of small fries like you. You see, if you want to seek peace, seek peace and if you don’t stop the activities of vigilantes in Niger you will not know peace forever.”

“Your deploying security officials in Kagara is a waste of time. Is there a fence in this forest? You know we are not in the cities, we are in the forest.”

Appealing to the bandit further, the negotiator stated, “I pray that you assist me the way Allah has helped you. In fact, one of the parents has been on admission in hospital since the abduction.”
