Northern traders lift food embargo on southern Nigeria

Northern Nigeria Cattle and foodstuff traders have agreed to lift food embargo on southern Nigeria, following the intervention of Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi and a former aviation minister, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode.

The traders, grouped as Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria spoke to newsmen late on Wednesday in Abuja after lifting their food supply embargo.

The Chairman of the group, Mr Mohammed Tahir, said the association had embarked on the strike in a bid to stop food and cattle supplies to Nigeria’s South-West, South-East and South-South.

Tahir said, however, that the association has decided to resume supplies, following appeals by Bello and other prominent Nigerians, who had been pleading with the traders.

He explained that the embargo was a way to express the grievances of members of the association, following alleged attacks on some members of the association during the #EndSARS protest and Shasha Market crisis in Ibadan.

Tahir said that the association had chosen to toe the line of peace in resolving the matter, rather than carrying out reprisal attacks on fellow Nigerians.

“Instead of reprisal attack, the only civil way to make our voices heard was to cut the supply of food and that has worked.

“We did not do that to punish the south or make them starve but to make our voices heard and get response to our demands and let our people know that something was being done over their plight.

“We demand compensation for those who died and attention for those still in the hospital. We demand that those who perpetrated these crimes should be punished.

“We want our people to be assured of their safety as they go about their lawful businesses,” said Tahir.

Bello lauded the traders for calling off their strike, praising them for not carrying out attacks on their fellow Nigerians.

The governor assured the traders that he would ensure that their demands were met and that he would also engage with other governors and stakeholders to ensure peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.

Bello said that he had since engaged Mr Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to make sure that everyone embraced peace.

The governor advised the traders to be wary of people, wanting to use them to stir violence, saying that Nigeria had come a long way as a united nation.

“In order not to allow these losses to continue, call off your strike immediately and that will allow us to ensure that your demands are met.

“You are not asking for good roads, security on the highways, modern shops, or facilities like loans or bailout, you are only asking for justice and that the laws of the land should be applied.

“I want to assure you that these five demands and even more will come your way and we are starting now.

“I will follow up with Mr President and even if I have to go down south to meet with all the governors. Believe me, whether APC or PDP, no governor will condone crisis.

“We must show to the world that we have the capacity of solving our own problems.”

Also speaking, Fani-Kayode commended Bello for his intervention on the matter, stating that the governor had been unrelenting in ensuring that the matter was resolved.

“If anybody had told me this situation would be resolved this easily, I would not believe but Gov. Yahaya Bello has done that.

“Bello is an extra-ordinary man because this country was on the brink of catastrophe just some few weeks back but he has resolved that.”

Fani-Kayode said that the meeting had shown that there was still hope for peace and unity in Nigeria.

Akwa Ibom court rules that females can inherit property

The ancient tradition in Etinan council area of Akwa Ibom state which denied female children the right to inherit their father’s properties has been nullified.

A High Court presided by Justice Pius Idiong quashed the practice yesterday while delivering judgment in a suit filed by eight children of the late Obong Patrick Joseph Noah of Edem Ekpat.

They filed the suit against their aunt Mrs. Gertrude Ekanem to stop her from inheriting the landed property of her sister, the late Immaculata Noah, who died and left behind the property without a husband or a child.

The case with the suit number HET/3A/2019 between Mr. Michael Patrick Noah and seven others and Mrs. Gertrude Ekanem, originated from the Etinan District Court, whose judgment the appellants appealed to the Chief Magistrate Court and the High Court.

In their evidence, the appellants contended that their aunt cannot inherit her sister’s property located at number 24 Iman Street, Etinan, because she is a woman and had also been married out of the family.

In his judgment, Justice Pius Idiong described such practice as anachronistic, primitive and unconscionable, which should not exist in the 21st Century society.

The Court held that any custom that denies a woman an inheritance on the ground of her gender, is not only unfair, but runs contrary to the fundamental objective of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

23 year-old South Korea's first transgender soldier found dead

South Korea’s first transgender soldier, who was forcibly ousted from the military after she underwent gender assignment surgery, has been found dead at her home.

Emergency services found Byun Hee-soo, 23, in her home in the central city of Cheongju on Wednesday after her mental health counsellor alerted the police that she was not reachable since 28 February, news agency Yonhap reported.

The cause of her death is not known and no suicide note has been found.

Byun was dismissed by the military from serving as a staff sergeant in January 2020, shortly after she had her gender reassignment surgery. The defence ministry classified her loss of male genital as physical disability under the military law.

The transgender rights campaigner then went on to file a suit against the military’s decision, seeking to continue her services as a female. The first hearing in the case was scheduled to take place next month.

Her death has sparked an outcry in social media among people and activists of the LGBTQ community as they condemned the government for not recognising transgender individuals.

“This is so very sad. Korea is the 10th largest economy in the world but acceptance of LGBTQ is horrifically low. I hope Byun Hee-soo’s courage was not all in vain,” said a twitter user.

Kim Kardashian continues to promote Kanye West's trainers despite divorce

Kim Kardashian undoubtedly left fans in disbelief as she took to her Instagram story to reveal that she was wearing Kanye West's brand of trainers.

The post was not a mistake as the 40-year-old showcased two up close and personal images of the unique shoe, in what appeared to be a bid to help flog the footwear.

In the silent post, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star merely paraded the sneakers, no words were written or spoken, nor did she include a tag in the odd upload.

But it was clear enough from the footage which highlighted the unusual design of the rap star's product that she had opted to wear the hitmakers Yeezy foam trainers.

It seemed the star may have been kicking back at home as she rocked silver socks to match the grey camouflage shoe, which is easily identifiable due to the large breathable and holey style.

On February 22 Kim filed for divorce from the Flashing Lights hitmaker, although their separation date is still not public knowledge.

To take Covid-19 vaccine is not by force -Federal Government

The Federal Government has said that Nigerians will not be mandated to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora disclosed while speaking on Arise Tv, that although the government is capable of vaccinating everyone, no Nigerian will be forced.

”Nothing will be made mandatory. It’s optional. The choice is yours. Nobody will be forced to take any vaccine,” he said.

When asked if it might become mandatory later, Mamora said, “If that happens, it would not be a decision of Nigeria.”

According to him, just like the Yellow Card certificate, countries might have to start demanding a COVID-19 vaccination certificate before allowing outsiders in.

He said Nigeria may be influenced by a demand by countries for a certificate of vaccination, adding that “it may just be something that will become global.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria had said Nigerians who received COVID-19 vaccines abroad must be tested upon arrival in Nigeria.

Governor Matawalle reveals involvement of watchman in Zamfara schoolgirls’ kidnap

The watchman of Government Secondary School in Jangebe, Zamfara State was involved in the abduction of the schoolgirls on February 26.

This is according to the state governor, Bello Matawalle, who revealed this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Although the governor did not reveal the identities of other personalities behind the abduction of the schoolgirls, the governor said information at his disposal indicated that the school’s security guard aided the bandits in whisking the students away.

“The watchman of the school,” the governor said in reaction to who was involved in the abduction of the over 200 schoolgirls in Jangebe.

“The children have mentioned that after releasing them, the bandits were telling them to greet the watchman for them. They even mentioned his name that he is the one who gave them the go-ahead to come, that he was involved.

“They have said it in front of the Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State. I assure Nigerians that investigation will be carried out and all people involved will be known,” he added.

Speaking further, the governor said that he is ready to resign if that will end insecurity in the state.

He also reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of Zamfara State as a ‘no-fly zone’, noting, “I am ready to accept any solution that will bring security to my state.”

“I am not intimidated. If I know that my resigning as a governor will make the people sleep with their two eyes closed, I can resign. I am ready to do what will bring security. I am not power-hungry. I have been having sleepless nights to protect the people of Zamfara State.”

According to Matawalle, he had no issue with the no-fly-zone declared by the Federal Government.

The Zamfara State governor clarified that the Security Council should have invited him before making some decisions.

Photos: Mob ties teenager to electric pole for allegedly stealing mother’s cooking utensil

A mob at Onimalu on Koloba Road, Ayobo, Ipaja, Lagos State, on Wednesday morning tied a teenager to an electric pole for allegedly stealing his mother’s cooking stand.

The teenager, identified simply as Sunkanmi, allegedly stole the local cooking stand known as “Adogan at 2.00 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to an eye witness, who pleaded anonymity, some residents of Onimalu caught Sunkanmi with the cooking stand and demanded an explanation from him but he could not give a satisfactory account of the item.

The witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Sunkanmi had been stealing for a long time.

“This boy once stole my car battery and some other valuables in my area. “He has been stealing for a very long time and has been caught several times,” he said.

A relative of the teenager, who was at the scene, said that his mother had given him money to go and learn any handiwork.

Sunkanmi was still tied on the pole, his mother rushed to the scene and beat him so much that the mob quickly untied him and shielded him from his mother’s fury.

Sunkanmi told the crowd that the cooking stand belonged to his mother and he stole it with the intention of selling it. He claimed that he wanted to sell the item to raise money to take care of himself.

“I decided to steal it and sell because I am not well taken care of,” he said.

He was later released to his mother with a warning never to engage in crime again.

Okorocha says plot to recall him will fail as he labels those behind it “adult delinquents” who just want money

The former governor of Imo State and Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday said that the  plan to recall him would fail completely.

Okorocha through his Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, spoke in Owerri as he reacted to the endorsement by Imo West senatorial district stakeholders to begin Okorocha’s recall process from the senate.

Okorocha said he wanted to know their reasons for the recall plan, claiming that those behind it wanted to make money from it.

According to Okorocha, “A group known as Orlu Political Consultative Assembly, OPOCA, has told its audience that it was going to recall the senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Owelle Rochas Okorocha from the Senate.

“We would have ignored the “adult delinquents” but for those who might not know  the history  or story of the elements behind OPOCA. We have decided to react accordingly.

“Those behind OPOCA  are political undertakers who glory in absurdities, simply to enlarge their coast or make their leaking pockets fat. And not just for any meaningful venture, but for leisure and pleasure. For those who do not know the group, the characters in OPOCA were the same people who carried the mock coffin of Chief Arthur Nzeribe when he was in the senate and they did that to please Chief Achike Udenwa who was governor then.

“They were also the same group that confined Chief Achike Udenwa to their hall of shame. They did that to please Chief Ikedi Ohakim who was governor then. In 2015, the same group wrote  a petition to the Inspector General of Police against Chief Hope Uzodinma alleging assault. They did that to please Rochas Okorocha who was governor then and they had done that, thinking that Okorocha would make them commissioners. But Okorocha was not interested in the  group using him to fight anybody. He rather appointed two of them Special Advisers.

“Chief Samfo Nwankwo, may his soul rest in peace, had died but Chief Anunobi out of anger decided to join forces with those who had gathered against Okorocha. And that was how he declared to run for the position of the National Publicity Secretary of the APC at the  last convention of the party against Barr. Emma Ibediro who had the backing of Okorocha.

“Today, he is commissioner in Uzodinma’s government and unlike Owelle Okorocha, Governor Uzodinma has found the remaining members of the group willing tools to continue to prosecute his war of attrition against Okorocha.

“We have heard that they have been given N1Billion for the  recall gimmick. Our only advice is that the governor should use the money to help in paying workers, teachers, pensioners and so on, who have not been paid for several months and there is no sign at the end of the tunnel.

“We are also worried that with the deteriorated security situation in the state, some people with the backing of the state government would be engaging in activities that would further submerge the security  situation in the  state,” Okorocha said.

NECO seizes results of over 30,000 students in Niger over N1,000,000,000 debt

For failure to pay examination fees of its students National Examination Council, NECO, has withheld results of the over 30,000 students of Niger State.

Following this development, affected students risk forfeiting their admissions into higher institutions for one or more years.

Vanguard gathered that the lean purse of the state government has hindered the release of funds to pay fees leading to the huge debt.

It said that students who graduated in 2019 and 2020 from Niger State are yet to access their results due to the debt.

Recall that the state government had earlier said it would not pay the NECO fees of non-indigenes and indigent students who did not get seven credits in the mock examinations organized by the state government.

However, it was gathered that the non-indigent students who paid the NECO fees to the state government are still unable to access their results because NECO said such fees were not remitted to it by the state government.

Parents of the affected students are now in a dilemma and are appealing to the state government to expedite action in settling the debt for the sake of their children.

One of the parents, Ahmad Musa, said “My son was given admission into the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State but could not go for clearance because of the debt.

“If I knew it would be like this, I would have paid for my child. Since the government has promised to pay, it should pay immediately.”

A widow who spoke with Journalists said she was greatly disappointed on the development, saying “If government had told us that they can’t pay, some of us would have struggled to pay. My son cannot go for admission now because his result is withheld.”

101 Soldiers allegedly abscond after Marte, Dikwa attacks

The Nigerian Army has declared 12 officers and 86 soldiers missing in the wake of last week’s Boko Haram attacks on Marte and Dikwa local government areas of Borno State.

A signal dated March 1, 2021 from Operation Lafiya Dole Headquarters in Maiduguri, sighted by the Daily Trust, showed that the soldiers were declared as deserters.

It indicated that three majors, three captains, six lieutenants, three sergeants and 89 soldiers fled in the aftermath of the attacks on Marte and Dikwa.

The signal, signed by Col. A.O. Odubiyi, on behalf of the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, partly read, “I am directed to connect Reference A on above subject and to respectfully forward details of additional officers and soldiers who absconded from the defensive location during the BHT attack on New Marte and Dikwa.

“You are requested to declare the named officers and soldiers’ deserters WEF 19 Feb 21. You are also requested to cause HQ NAFC to freeze their accounts and apprehend/bring them under military escort to this Headquarters if seen within your AOR.”

It would be recalled that Boko Haram fighters had dislodged Nigerian troops in Marte on February 14, prompting the troops to relocate to Dikwa.

The insurgents reportedly foisted their flags at Marte area after killing seven troops of the 153rd Task Force Battalion.

Thereafter, the terrorists waged another war against the troops in Dikwa on February 19 but were repelled.

Shortly after the attempted attack, the Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru went to Dikwa and gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the troops to recapture Marte and other towns which they did.

A military source told Daily Trust that the case of the 101 soldiers that deserted was a source of concern.

Fears of epidemic in Ogun secretariat over collapse of sewage system

Workers and visitors to the Ogun Government Secretariat’s Complex at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta are now confronted with filthy sight of faeces and the accompanying stinking odour as a result of the collapse of the sewage system of the  Ministry of Environment.

As a result, passers-by at the facility who are majorly civil servants and visitors alike have to cover their noses and mouths to avoid inhaling the putrid smell oozing out from the collapsed facility.

Some government’s workers who spoke with our correspondent in Abeokuta, the state capital, expressed fears that the leakage from the collapsed sewage system could result in an outbreak of cholera and other diseases if not quickly attended to by the State Government, especially the Ministry of Environment.

The Ministry of Environment currently lacks a political head as the commissioner, Hon. Abiodun Abudu-Balogun, has been on suspension following his alleged involvement in a rape case.

However, civil servants who spoke to PM NEWS condemned the carefree attitude of their counterparts in the Ministry of Environment, especially, the Permanent Secretary, Mr Olabode Ojetola over neglect of the collapsed sewage system.

The sewage system started collapsing about two years ago without any attention from the Ministry of Environment.
