Crocodile swallows 8-year-old in Indonesia

An eight-year-old boy was killed by a crocodile as he swam in a river in Indonesia’s East Kalimantan province, an official said on Friday.

The boy and his little brother were swimming in the river while their father was watching near their house in Kutai Timur district on Wednesday when he was attacked and swallowed by a crocodile, said Oktavianto, an official at the local search and rescue agency.

His father jumped to help him but the reptile escaped, Oktavianto said.

“He chased the crocodile and hit it with bare hands but he couldn’t keep up,’’ he said.

Locals caught the six-metre-long crocodile on Thursday and found the intact body of the boy inside it.

A video posted on YouTube showed rescue workers pulling the body out of the crocodile’s stomach, with his family watching and weeping.

The river is known to be a crocodile habitat, Oktavianto said.

“But they went to the river often to bathe and get water for cooking,’’ he said.

Shock as father cuts off daughter's head because he did not approve of her boyfriend

A father-of-four decapitated his 17-year-old daughter and carried her head through the streets because he did not approve of her boyfriend.

Residents spotted Sarvesh Kumar walking with the head in the Indian village of Pandetara, Uttar Pradesh yesterday.

He was on his way to a police station after cutting off his daughter's head as part of an honour killing.

Footage shows one man searching the father as he checks his clothing.

Police officers ask the man his name, where the head is from and whose head it was.

Kumar admitted to beheading his daughter with a sharp object as he was unhappy with the relationship she was in, NDTV reports.

'I did it. There was no one else. I closed the latch and did it. The body is in the room', he said.

He also claimed that he would have killed her lover too had he been able to find him.

Kumar was arrested by police and taken into custody. His wife has since been arrested too.

Police found the body of his daughter at the family home and have sent it for a post-mortem examination.

An officer has been suspended as he was pictured carrying the head 'inappropriately', according to local media reports.

PFN now religious enterprise - Chris Okotie slams

The Shepherd Superintendent of the Household of God Church, Rev. Chris Okotie, has said the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria “has become a clannish religious enterprise.”

Okotie said this in reaction to the election of the new national executive of the PFN, led by the newly elected President, Bishop Wale Oke.

He lamented that the Christian body has departed from its core values and is now a shadow of itself.

The clergyman said this in a terse message to the PFN National Secretariat in Lagos through his media adviser, Ladi Ayodeji.

Okotie said, “PFN has become a clannish religious enterprise. It is akin to an amorphous political entity with a Christian silhouette.

“Leadership in the church of God is by divine appointment and not the whims and caprices of a disjointed assemblage of Episcopalian pacifists”.

Rev Okotie has, over the years, been a critic of the successive leadership of the PFN and has always distanced himself from its activities, citing credibility issues.

Oke of the Sword of the Spirit Ministries was elected as the seventh National President PFN for a four-year term Tuesday night.

A statement from his media aide, Mr Kayode Oladeji, stated that Oke was unanimously elected by the National Advisory Council of PFN at its ongoing meeting in Enugu, Enugu State.

Oke, also the Proprietor, Cornerstone University, Ibadan, Oyo State, succeeded Revd Felix Omobude of the New Covenant Gospel Church.

He was the immediate National Deputy President of PFN.

Court reverses forfeiture order on Saraki’s Ikoyi houses

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Thursday, set aside its order of interim forfeiture on the properties of Senator Olubukola Saraki, located on 17 and 17A MacDonald Road, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

The judgment came after counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Nnaemeka Omewa, and counsel for Saraki, Mr Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, had adopted their respective written addresses for and against the final forfeiture order sought by the EFCC.

Justice Abdullah Liman, however, held that the essence of an interim order of forfeiture was to preserve the property from being dissipated by the suspect and the burden was on the EFCC to satisfy the court that the properties were proceeds of unlawful or illegal activity under the corruption laws.

Liman said the applicant had in its affidavit in support of its motion for final forfeiture stated that the properties sought to be forfeited were purchased with a personal loan that Saraki obtained from Guaranty Trust Bank.

“The evidence of the transactions presented by the applicant was in respect of transactions made after he had purchased the property and the proceeds used for the purchase were legal; that is loan.

“The applicant failed to prove its entitlement to the relief of final forfeiture of the respondent’s properties,” he said.

Liman, therefore, dismissed the application and vacated the interim forfeiture order it made on October 21, 2019.

Buhari orders security beef up around Nigeria’s borders

President Buhari has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to improve surveillance and control around the nation’s borders.

He directed the service to ensure that criminals did not find Nigeria as a safe haven to hide and perpetrate their criminality.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President gave the directive in his speech at the virtual inauguration of the NIS Technology Building.

The statement was titled: ‘President Buhari directs Immigration Service to tighten security around borders, urges security outfits to raise performance’.

The President was quoted as also instructing all security agencies to raise their performance in protecting lives and property so that the country’s Global Security Index must be improved.

He promised that his regime would give the agencies the needed support for their operations.

He said, “As a security agency, I charge you to be relentless in carrying out your statutory duties of keeping our borders safe, while you ensure that criminal elements don’t find Nigeria as a safe haven to hide and perpetrate their criminality.

“I urge you to actively collaborate with international security organisations like the INTERPOL in safeguarding our borders. Remember that a safe border is a prerequisite for a safe nation.

“You must develop strong working relationships and ties with the international community and friendly nations as it relates to migration management; adopt and implement workable strategies from them, while also sharing your best practices.

If coup plotters are pardoned, why not bandits – Gumi

Renowned northern Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, said if government could pardon coup plotters that committed treasonable felony, there was nothing wrong extending the same gesture to bandits.

The Islamic cleric, while responding to the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kaduna on Thursday, said there was need to forgive bandits for the country to have peace.

Gumi added, “Even those that instigated civil war, the civil war that millions of people died, were pardoned. I see no reason why we cannot accept their (bandits) repentance and give them amnesty.”

Gumi added that he never betrayed soldiers of Christian faith before the bandits when he visited them.

He noted that he was misunderstood by CAN because the video that went viral about his discussion with the bandits was distorted and the actual message was manipulated.

Gumi said, “You ask why do we give them amnesty but they told us specifically that they are ready to drop their arms and they don’t want to be pursued with legal actions after they repented.

“If the country could pardon coup plotters who committed treasonable offences in the era of military administration, the bandits can as well enjoy similar forgiveness even better under democratic rule.

“These people in the bush, who have taken arms; they are criminals. I wonder who is not a criminal. Since Nigeria forgave coup plotters, forgave those that killed. Even those that instigated civil war; civil war that millions of people died, I see no reason why we cannot accept their repentance.

“Since that is the bottleneck and it is only the Federal Government that can give them that leverage. Strangely, we found out that they are victims too. They were victims of profiling. So many of them were arrested and punished just for looking like herdsmen.”

Sanwo-Olu unveils 1.4km Pen Cinema Bridge today

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu will commission the 1.4km Pen Cinema Bridge, Agege on Friday, 5 March 2021.

The Agege Pen Cinema Flyover project started in 2017 under the last administration of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. It was completed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Sanwo-Olu, in line with his promise of completing all ongoing projects across the State, visited the project site in January 2020.

Northern traders lift food embargo on southern Nigeria

Northern Nigeria Cattle and foodstuff traders have agreed to lift food embargo on southern Nigeria, following the intervention of Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi and a former aviation minister, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode.

The traders, grouped as Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria spoke to newsmen late on Wednesday in Abuja after lifting their food supply embargo.

The Chairman of the group, Mr Mohammed Tahir, said the association had embarked on the strike in a bid to stop food and cattle supplies to Nigeria’s South-West, South-East and South-South.

Tahir said, however, that the association has decided to resume supplies, following appeals by Bello and other prominent Nigerians, who had been pleading with the traders.

He explained that the embargo was a way to express the grievances of members of the association, following alleged attacks on some members of the association during the #EndSARS protest and Shasha Market crisis in Ibadan.

Tahir said that the association had chosen to toe the line of peace in resolving the matter, rather than carrying out reprisal attacks on fellow Nigerians.

“Instead of reprisal attack, the only civil way to make our voices heard was to cut the supply of food and that has worked.

“We did not do that to punish the south or make them starve but to make our voices heard and get response to our demands and let our people know that something was being done over their plight.

“We demand compensation for those who died and attention for those still in the hospital. We demand that those who perpetrated these crimes should be punished.

“We want our people to be assured of their safety as they go about their lawful businesses,” said Tahir.

Bello lauded the traders for calling off their strike, praising them for not carrying out attacks on their fellow Nigerians.

The governor assured the traders that he would ensure that their demands were met and that he would also engage with other governors and stakeholders to ensure peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.

Bello said that he had since engaged Mr Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to make sure that everyone embraced peace.

The governor advised the traders to be wary of people, wanting to use them to stir violence, saying that Nigeria had come a long way as a united nation.

“In order not to allow these losses to continue, call off your strike immediately and that will allow us to ensure that your demands are met.

“You are not asking for good roads, security on the highways, modern shops, or facilities like loans or bailout, you are only asking for justice and that the laws of the land should be applied.

“I want to assure you that these five demands and even more will come your way and we are starting now.

“I will follow up with Mr President and even if I have to go down south to meet with all the governors. Believe me, whether APC or PDP, no governor will condone crisis.

“We must show to the world that we have the capacity of solving our own problems.”

Also speaking, Fani-Kayode commended Bello for his intervention on the matter, stating that the governor had been unrelenting in ensuring that the matter was resolved.

“If anybody had told me this situation would be resolved this easily, I would not believe but Gov. Yahaya Bello has done that.

“Bello is an extra-ordinary man because this country was on the brink of catastrophe just some few weeks back but he has resolved that.”

Fani-Kayode said that the meeting had shown that there was still hope for peace and unity in Nigeria.

Akwa Ibom court rules that females can inherit property

The ancient tradition in Etinan council area of Akwa Ibom state which denied female children the right to inherit their father’s properties has been nullified.

A High Court presided by Justice Pius Idiong quashed the practice yesterday while delivering judgment in a suit filed by eight children of the late Obong Patrick Joseph Noah of Edem Ekpat.

They filed the suit against their aunt Mrs. Gertrude Ekanem to stop her from inheriting the landed property of her sister, the late Immaculata Noah, who died and left behind the property without a husband or a child.

The case with the suit number HET/3A/2019 between Mr. Michael Patrick Noah and seven others and Mrs. Gertrude Ekanem, originated from the Etinan District Court, whose judgment the appellants appealed to the Chief Magistrate Court and the High Court.

In their evidence, the appellants contended that their aunt cannot inherit her sister’s property located at number 24 Iman Street, Etinan, because she is a woman and had also been married out of the family.

In his judgment, Justice Pius Idiong described such practice as anachronistic, primitive and unconscionable, which should not exist in the 21st Century society.

The Court held that any custom that denies a woman an inheritance on the ground of her gender, is not only unfair, but runs contrary to the fundamental objective of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
