World's oldest known wild bird gives birth to another chick at 70

Wisdom the albatross, the world's oldest known wild bird, has had a chick at the age of at least 70.

The Laysan albatross hatched the chick on 1 February in a wildlife refuge in the North Pacific Ocean, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has said.

Laysan albatrosses usually only live for 12-40 years. But Wisdom was first identified by researchers in 1956.

The father is Wisdom's partner, Akeakamai, who she has been with since 2012, US wildlife officials said.

Albatrosses usually mate for life, but it is believed Wisdom had other partners in the past that she outlived.

Although Wisdom hatched her chick in February, in the Midway Atoll national wildlife refuge, in a US minor outlying island in the North Pacific, it has only been reported this week.

"Wisdom laid her egg sometime during the last few days of November," the USFWS wrote in its statement announcing the new arrival.

"Soon after, Wisdom returned to sea to forage and her mate Akeakamai took over incubation duties. Albatross parents share incubation duties and once the chick hatches, share feeding duties."

Generator fume kills two undergraduates in Imo

Two undergraduates of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, have allegedly died as a result of inhaled carbon monoxide from a generator in their hostel.

The students, Udeagbala Kenchukwu,21, and Stephen Anele, 21, were found dead after police operatives forced the door of their room at Jabulani hostel at Eziobodo, open.

A source at the hostel told punch correspondent on Saturday that “we had to invite the police after the students refused to open their room up to 6pm the next day.”

The source said that it was strange to them when on Thursday evening the three students who slept in the room could not open their room till the evening of Thursday.

“We invited the police and the room was forced open and to our surprise, the three roommates were almost dead. They were rushed to the hospital for emergency attention. Unfortunately, two died while one made it.” The undergraduate who pleaded anonymity said.

The Police Spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the death of the undergraduates when contacted by punch correspondent on Saturday.

Describing the deaths of the undergraduates as sudden and unnatural, Ikeokwu said that preliminary investigation by the command suggested that the undergraduates died as a result of a generator fume which was by the window of their room.

Ikeokwu said, “Around 4 pm on March 4, upon a report received at the Divisional Police Headquarters at Nekede/Ihiagwa, operatives of the division moved to Jabulani hostel, Eziobodo, and met the three occupants of one of the rooms, identified as FRED Nkama Fred, 22, Udeagbala Kenchukwu,21, and Stephen Anele,21, all lying helplessly in the room.

“The operatives broke into the room and immediately evacuated them to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri, where two of the victims were confirmed dead by the doctors on duty but Nkama Fred was successfully revived, and presently receiving treatment.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victims who had been identified as Students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, might have suffocated as a result of the fume (carbon monoxide) which emanated from their power generating set, which they inhaled while sleeping, as the Power generator was seen directly by the window in an enclosed space, and the fume discharging pipe pointing directly towards the window.”

He however said that the state Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Muhammed, had ordered an investigation into the matter while efforts were ongoing to trace their relatives.

Food blockade: It's time for South-West governors to take agric seriously - Gani Adams

Against the backdrop for food scarcity in the South-West occasioned by blockade instigated by association of Northern food dealers, a Yoruba leader, Gani Adams, has called on the six governors of South-West states to inject at least 15 percent of their annual budget into agriculture.

Speaking with reporters on Friday in Lagos, Mr. Adams said such allocation would make a huge impact on sustainable food production in the region.

He urged the six state governments in the South-West zone to adopt the Rwanda model by engaging expertise in their agricultural sectors.

“Investment in agriculture will provide employment, enhance IGR, provide food security, reduce urban congestion, and enlarge the coast for participatory, modernised agriculture,” he noted.

According to Mr. Adams, the South-West consumes more than N8 billion worth of food and dairy products daily.

He said the recent food crisis was a clarion call to the South-West stakeholders, including security groups to provide the necessary security for farmers in order to produce enough agricultural produce.

“It is the responsibility of all the South-West governors to swiftly respond and seek a better approach to enhance both small and large scale farming across the region.

“They should also strengthen the security architecture of the region,” he said.

I love being underestimated – Wizkid reveals

One of Africa’s biggest artistes, Ayodeji Balogun- Wizkid, has stated that he loves to prove himself when people underestimate him.

He revealed this during an Instagram Live session with the Tony Elumelu Foundation during the week.

He said, “Some of the tough lessons that have shaped me to be the entrepreneur I am today is never to take (no) for an answer.

When I started, I was probably the youngest person making music in Nigeria. And everywhere I went, I was the youngest person in the room. I learnt not to accept ‘no’ for an answer and that has helped shape me into the man I am now. When I think about anything, I go for it. Of course, I have mentors such as Mr Tony Elemelu (Big Daddy), and I think everybody knows that.

“Some of the business tips I learnt is to be open-minded and I always keep my ears to the ground because one does not know where a good business idea could come from. I also try to take my time before I make decisions.

I have learnt to be diligent with my work, thanks to the people I look up to. On the issue of being under constant pressure to prove myself, I’ll say that it actually fuels me more than anything in the world because I love it when people underestimate me. I just show you that I can do it. There is not much story behind my success, other than the fact that I personally decided that I wanted to be excellent. I made up my mind to be an amazing artiste.

Secondly, I don’t joke with my craft. I try as much as possible to always elevate my music, sound and business. I guess if one stays amazing towards one’s work, the world would steadily gravitate towards one. It is just hard work and persistency that has helped my music.”

37 year-old mother of two dies during s.e.x romp with lover

The police command in Adamawa State on Friday confirmed the death of a 37-year-old mother of two children who died in the house of her lover during s.e.xual intercourse.

The police also confirmed the arrest of the lover, one Lekan Agboola, a telecommunication engineer as part of investigations to establish the actual cause of her death.

The state police spokesperson, DSP Suleiman Nguroje, who spoke with journalists in Yola, said Agboola was being detained at the command’s criminal investigation department.

Agboola said Lugas had been his girlfriend for more than three years, adding that he has a wife and two children living in Lagos.

Recounting the circumstances surrounding the death of his partner, Agboola said he called the late Lugas to meet him at home.

He said it was while they were having s.e.x that he noticed she suddenly became stiff.

He said, “On February 24, 2021, around 9am, I called her on the phone and asked her to see me because we had not seen each other for some time. When she arrived, we started having fun and she suddenly collapsed.

‘’When I realised she was not breathing, I then called one of my female friends and told her what happened. She advised me to take her to a hospital where she was confirmed dead.”

The family of the late woman said they suspected foul play, urging the police to get to the root of the case.

A relation, Bridget Lucas, who spoke on behalf of the family, said she was at home with her late sister on February 24 when Agboola called her on the phone.

She said she later got a call from Agboola, less than an hour later, informing her of Lugas’ death.

She added, ‘’I appeal to the police, Adamawa State Government, civil society organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to ensure justice for Andi and not let the matter be swept under the carpet.”

I struggle to get perfect bra –BBNaija's Dorathy Bachor

The first runner-up of Big Brother Naija (Lockdown Edition), Dorathy Bachor, has stated that the reality television show made her come out of her shell.

The entrepreneur stated this during an Instagram Live chat with showbiz personality, Ubi Franklin, during the week.

She said, “I am a private person. I hate public opinion. The words, ‘That’s my opinion’, annoys me because I am not someone that would sit down and want to have an opinion about other people’s lives. That was why I stayed in my shell.

However, that did not pay my bills and it did not put food on my table either. But, Big Brother Naija made me come out of my shell.

Bachor, who recently started her own lingerie brand, stated that the idea came from the struggles she had with getting the right braziers. She said, “When I came out of the house, I was blank. However, I took the time to study my fans. I tried to understand what they liked about me.

I found out it was more of (my) confidence. I wanted to do fashion but I realised that many people were already doing that. So, I decided to do something unique that I can relate to. I know the struggles of not being able to get a perfect underwear or bra.

The businesses I do are those I can relate to and have a passion for.”

Sadiq Daba had oxygen machine while acting in ‘Citation’ — Kunle Afolayan

Kunle Afolayan, Nigerian film producer, says Sadiq Daba, the late actor, had an oxygen machine with him while featuring in ‘Citation’, a 2020 film.

Daba breathed his last at the Lagos state university teaching hospital (LASUTH) where he had been undergoing treatment last Wednesday. He had battled prostate cancer and leukemia for years prior to his demise.

Speaking about his memories of the deceased film star during an Arise TV show on Friday night, Afolayan said Daba had his oxygen close when they were filming ‘Citation’.

“I think God gave him those last few years for him to reconnect with people and for people to reconnect with him. And so he can be documented properly. Before I found him, he wasn’t doing anything,” he explained.

“When we were prepping for the film, his name came to mind. I went online, looked for him, and saw an interview he did two years ago (2012). I reached out to the journalist who wrote the article and she gave me his number.

“After that, he featured in a few other films. God brought him back after we did ‘October 1’ but I can tell that, even when we were shooting ‘October 1’, he was a struggle. Uncle S is fragile. Sometimes he’d be sick and we had to wait.

“But when we were doing ‘Citation’, if you check our videos, he had his oxygen machine under the table. When I was casting him, a lot of people had reservations like, ‘Look, Uncle S is not fit, what if he’s not able to finish?’

“I said, ‘I can’t go wrong. If this is the last film he’d to do, I’ll do it.’ We brought him, when he is uncomfortable, I tell him let’s take time out. In all the clips where he’s dancing, I played the songs to put him in good mood.”

On how he met Daba, Afolayan said his name had come up when he sought someone to fill a role for ‘October 1’.

“I experienced him when I was really young in the 80s and 70s. I saw a lot of his works as a broadcaster and journalist on NTA. Our paths crossed because I was looking for someone to fit into a particular role in ‘October 1’,” he added.

“His name came to mind. I was so glad that it happened also because he won the ‘Best Actor of the Year’ at the African Movie Academy Awards. In 2018, we did a documentary and I had to bring him aboard.

“A lot of these people, when you keep them going and give them a reason to appreciate their existence, it means a lot to them. A year ago we did ‘Citation’. Three to four weeks ago, I spoke with him over the phone.

“And we were talking about how much people accepted the movie. When I heard he was gone, I felt we lost an amazing guy. I think he lived a great life and his name will be remembered forever."

Court fines Daddy Freeze N5million for adultery

A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has ordered controversial on-air personality Ifedayo Olarinde also known as Daddy Freeze to pay the sum of N5million for committing adultery with a married woman named Benedicta Elechi.

Court documents obtained by Punch on Friday showed the order was given on February 18.

Justice Akpughunum ordered Daddy Freeze to pay the money to Paul Odekina who was married to Elechi at the time of the incident.

Listed in the suit with no PHC/403MC/2012 are Benedicta Odekina nee Elechi as the petitioner and cross petitioner, Mr Odekina as first respondent and cross petitioner and Mr Olarinde (Daddy Freeze) as the co-respondent.

Part of the document read: “The sum of N5,000,000 is awarded against Ifedayo Olarinde (the 2nd Cross Respondent to the Cross Petition) as damages for depriving the Cross Petitioner of the amiable consort of his wife (Petitioner/1st Cross Respondent) and for injury suffered as a result of his adultery with the Petitioner/Cross Respondent.

“An Order of injunction is hereby granted, preventing Ifedayo Olarinde ― the Co-Respondent to the Cross Petition ― from having access or dealing whatsoever with the children of the marriage until they attain the age of majority.”

The judge then proceeded to dissolve the marriage between Paul and Benedicta.

Paul was granted custody of the children produced in the marriage while Benedicta was ordered to hand over the children’s passports and birth certificates.

Daddy Freeze confirmed the incident to the newspaper, saying, “I will release a statement on my Instagram handle in due time; not today, but in due time. There are things that I want to ensure that I have proper information on before I release my statement.”

Count me out, I won’t take COVID-19 vaccine – Yahaya Bello

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello on Friday said he would not take COVID-19 vaccine as he is hale and hearty.

Bello, in an interview on Channels TV’s ‘Today Politics’, said President Muhammadu Buhari could take the vaccine, but that he would not.

“Mr President is the leader of this country. I respect him so high; all of us respect him so much. We love him and he is leading by example. If he needs to take the vaccines and he takes it, it is a welcome development.

“As far as I am concerned, I as a person, I don’t need to take vaccines. There is nothing wrong with me, I am hale and hearty. I am 100 per cent healthy. I won’t take any vaccine,” he said.

Bello stated that COVID-19 is not the business of people in Kogi State, saying that the state had more pertinent issues and more pertinent matters that it was attending to in Kogi State.

He said his administration met insecurity and is tackling it, among several other challenges.

“Disunity, we met on ground and we have united Kogi State today not COVID-19. COVID-19 is just a minute aspect of what we are treating or handling in Kogi State; there have been outbreaks of Lassa Fever and Yellow Fever and those were handled without making noise about it.

“The last Yellow Fever (outbreak), we vaccinated out people against Yellow Fever, we encouraged them, we educated them and they felt the impact,” he said.

2023: Bawa didn’t advise INEC not to sell forms to anyone —EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has described as false a report  that its Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, advised the Independent National Electoral Commission against selling forms to persons with a file with the agency who are aspiring to contest in 2023 general elections.

The EFCC said Bawa has neither met with INEC officials nor made any pronouncement remotely related to the election since he was appointed.

The agency disclosed this in a statement signed by its Head, Media & Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, and issued on March 5, 2021.

The statement read, “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a report currently circulating in the social media, in which the Executive Chairman, Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, is quoted as having advised the Independent National Electoral Commission, not to sell forms to any aspirant who has a file with the agency, pursuant to the 2023 general election.

“The Commission wishes to state that the report is false as the Executive Chairman has neither met with INEC officials nor made any pronouncement remotely related to election since he was appointed.

“All he has said, in his two public outings so far, pertain to issues concerning his vision for the EFCC and the outlook for the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

“Qualification for elective political offices in Nigeria are clearly stated in the 1999 Constitution and relevant sections of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

“It is not the place of the EFCC chairman to determine who runs for an office or otherwise.

“Members of the public are therefore enjoined to consider this report as another classic case of fake news and discountenance it.”

Give me custody of my four kids, Fani-Kayode’s wife begs court

A former beauty pageant, Precious Chikwendu, has demanded the full custody of her four sons with her ex-husband and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode.

Chikwendu accused Fani-Kayode of beating her up several times, including when she was pregnant, accusing the ex-minister of confining her to a hospital when she attempted to escape.

The former beauty queen made the allegations in an affidavit she deposed to in support of an originating motion brought pursuant to Section 69 of the Child Rights Act, 2003.

She said she met Fani-Kayode in 2014 at the peak of her career and they soon fell in love and began living together and had four children, a son aged five and a set of triplets aged three.

She said, “From the early days of our relationship, the respondent (Fani-Kayode), has always maintained a lifestyle of utter disregard to my feelings. This was evident in the way and manner the respondent assaulted me while pregnant with our first son.

“The respondent (Fani-Kayode) kicked me severally on my stomach over a petty argument that ensued. It was my friend, Vanessa, who was around at the material time that intervened at the nick of time to save me.

“I had to leave the respondent’s (Fani-Kayode’s) house a few days after this incident. The respondent (Fani-Kayode) repeated the same act when I was pregnant with triplets. This time, it was my mother and sister, Faith, that intervened.”

Chikwendu alleged that on one occasion, Fani-Kayode and a former Divisional Police Officer of Asokoro Police Station drugged her.

She said the ex-minister and she soon became companions and began living together. She, however, said things soon turned sour as Fani-Kayode began exhibiting signs of paranoia.

The ex-beauty pageant alleged that the former minister accused her of infidelity and on several occasions locked her out of their home located on Aso Drive, Asokoro, Abuja.

The ex-beauty pageant alleged that in a bid to spite her, Fani-Kayode had been taking pictures of the children with different women and posting them on social media.

In a response filed by one Oluwafemi Popoola on behalf of Fani-Kayode, the ex-minister said he had not been properly served with the court processes and hence could not respond appropriately.

The affidavit Popoola deposed to read in part, “Except there is service or proper service of the originating processes filed in this case on the respondent/applicant, this honourable court will lack the jurisdiction to conduct further proceedings.”

Chikwendu said, “I was incarcerated at a hospital for a period of two weeks. I was separated from my six-month-old triplets and a year-old son at the time.”

Chikwendu, who alleged that the ex-minister had denied her access to her children for several months, asked the court to compel Fani-Kayode to give her a monthly payment of N3.5m for the upkeep of their four sons

According to Chikwendu, Fani-Kayode currently spends N1.8m on food, toiletries and others on the four children every month while N575,000 is spent monthly on clothing.

She said Fani-Kayode had continued to deny her access to the children in order to compel her to return to the marriage.

Benin Republic vs Nigeria: Odion Ighalo provides update on return to Super Eagles

Former Manchester United striker, Odion Ighalo, has provided updates on his speculated return to the senior national team of Nigeria.

The striker resigned from the team two years ago after the Super Eagles came third at the last African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Ighalo said he has had discussions with the national team coach but is yet to decide whether to return or not.

“I have been approached by the coach, but I haven’t decided yet whether this is a path I want to follow again,” the 31-year-old told the BBC.

“We’ve been talking about it for a while and hopefully soon I will make that decision.

“I need to decide because I have huge respect for my country and the coach, so it’s only fair to let people know where you stand.”

Ighalo helped Nigeria to finish third in the last AFCON. He is the Super Eagles seventh-highest-scorer of all time with 16 goals.

Drug barons funding terrorists, bandits — Senate president

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, yesterday raised the alarm that drug barons are  funding terrorists. According to him, this explains why  Boko Haram insurgents, bandits and kidnappers with arms and ammunition undertake criminal activities in the country.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja  when the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brigadier General Buba Marwa, retd, paid him a visit, Lawan  called for the restructuring of NDLEA  to further empower it to rise to the occasion of clamping down on the criminal activities of drug traffickers operating in the country.

Lawan, who assured that the National Assembly will support the agency in the aspect of amending the NDLEA Act  to enable the agency achieve its core mandate, said: “The National Assembly members are almost on a daily interaction with our constituents and we know the very debilitating impact of drug abuse in our various communities.

“You have rightly said almost every community in this country suffers from drug addiction. So, we are very mindful of what is happening. “I believe this agency needs restructuring. Now that you have taken over, we should restructure the agency, not piece meal touches, because we need to get it right.

“My personal opinion is that NDLEA should be in the league of EFCC, ICPC, and, therefore, the kind of support that those two agencies receive, you should receive, in addition to many other things that you should be supported with.

“So, the National Assembly will definitely work with you, we will partner with you, and ensure we do our best to give you the kind of support that will enable you to properly discharge your mandate.

“Having said this, let me say that Nigeria is in one way or the other a transit route for drugs. Peddlers pass their drugs through Nigeria — cannabis, heroin and possibly even cocaine. “We believe that this has to stop, because the proceeds of such activities fund terrorism, banditry; you wonder how the bandits have RPGs and these massive arms they have.

“Definitely, these are some acquisition provided by some barons, not the bandits themselves.  So, we need to ensure that this transit role that Nigerians play is addressed properly. We have to approach this through multi-sectoral efforts — the Customs, Immigration Service, our Security Agencies, and in fact, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and our seaports.

“Of course, this is not going to be easy, but we have to be steadfast and we should do whatever is possible within the limited resources we have to make you better.”
