Don’t use force to rescue us, kidnapped forestry college students plead with govt

Kidnapped students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization Kaduna, have appealed to the Government not to use force to rescue them as their captors warned that such moves would lead to the killing of all the students.

Benson Emmanuel, one of the students who spoke in a video that went viral on Saturday, said that they were surrounded by the gunmen who threatened that none of them would leave alive once the security agents attempt to rescue them by force.

Emmanuel, who sat on the ground together with the other abductees, both males and females, said they needed urgent help as all of then were faced with health issues.

“They have surrounded us, saying anybody who comes to rescue us by force, they are going to take our lives,” he said.

He said the students were injured badly and appealed to the government not to waste much time in rescuing them from the gunmen.

” They have bad mind against us, we are appealing to government to settle this early” he said.

Similarly, a female student also spoke in Hausa, repeated what Emmanuel had said in the video.

The students looked so dejected and terrified in the video, with no tops but only trousers for the males and wrappers for the females.

The gunmen whose heads were concealed in the recording were seen in military uniform pointing their guns at the students, as they were forced to speak.

In another video, the students were recorded crying and begging for leniency, as some of the gunmen moved around flogging them with whips.

They were also appealing to the authorities to rescue them, amidst sobs.

The students were all gathered in a bush with fewer trees or vegetation cover. The gunmen were speaking in Hausa language, intermittently, which was heavily accented and suggested they might be from the neighbouring countries.

“Never get pregnant for a man you are not sure of”- Wale Jana

Business man, Wale Jana has to give relationship advice. According to him, he said that pregnancy doesn’t keep marriage but threatens it. He gave out some reactions to back his assertion.

Wale who is married with kids, said this in reaction to a couple who were seeking divorce but called it off after the man impregnated his wife during lockdown.

He wrote;

“Sorry to burst your bubble this morning but pregnancy doesn’t keep a marriage it actually threatens marriage and may even worsen the situation. Your marriage will never be the same when children come. Your stress level increases, more money is needed and if there is no one to help or you don’t have a supportive spouse you will be totally frustrated. For women who think the best way to keep a man is to get pregnant, you are going to play yourself because you are about to be extremely frustrated.

“In many marriages the attraction begins to wear off when she gets pregnant, that very beautiful woman suddenly has a big nose, she begins to gain weight she may never lose, her breasts begin to sag and she just loses her glow and may never get it back if she doesn’t have a supportive husband. Never ever get pregnant for a man you are not sure of, you will regret it for the rest of your life.

“Please share so that others can be blessed as you are blessed.”

I’d reject senseless role even for N10m– Bimbo Ademoye

Beautiful and talented actress, Bimbo Ademoye, has said that she has far more to offer than just her beauty. According to her, she was more than her curves or the s3xy roles she sometimes plays.

She told Saturday Beats, “I would not say I paid any price (to get to where I am).  I just kept showing my skills and letting people know that I was more than the curves. I am more than the s3xy roles (I play). My gratitude goes to filmmakers―Uduak Isong and Biodun Stephens― who took chances on me.”

Ademoye also maintained that she would reject N10m if the storyline of the movie she is supposed to act is not interesting. She said, “(I would consider) the storyline more than anything (else) in the world. I would reject N10m if the story does not make sense.

I have said this before. There were times I fell victim of the storyline not being wonderful. I had read the story and it was good but when I got on set, they decided to cut corners.

The movie was released and the editor did not do a good job. It did not look nice at all. I have actually rejected scripts, telling the producer the story did not work for me.”

On her ability to play different roles, Ademoye said it had to do with her childhood in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State. “I think it has to do with my childhood. I grew up in Ebute Meta― in ‘the hood’ like people would say. I grew up around several characters and different people. When people see me playing a certain character, I am probably trying to mimic someone I knew while growing up. Thankfully, so far so good, it comes out well.”

Iyabo Ojo discloses she has been r.a.p.e.d four bad times

Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, has narrated how she was r3ped four times and in her husband’s house.

Ojo in a recent episode titled: “Bare it all with I Y’ on her YouTube page, said that she was first raped at the age of 14 but kept it a secret because it was like a taboo to be r3ped at that time.

Narrating her experience, she said: “I have been raped before. Not once but five times and trust me when I say it was not easy. The first time I was r3ped, I was 14.

“It took place at my aunty’s house (not a family member). I didn’t want to talk about it because it was taboo to talk about it. I felt I would be blamed for everything that happened.

“And the second one, that was another terrible one that happened. I didn’t tell anybody in my family too but a friend of mine then and it was one of the reasons I ran away at that time.

“Now, the third one was with a guy who was my neighbour. He was a friend to my first boyfriend, though he was much older than him.”

“I was at his house but I never knew that he had such intention. He was hungry and asked me if I was hungry too. I told him that I was not hungry because I was already late and my aunty would be waiting for me.

“He started trying to touch me. I got up angrily and made my way to the door. I noticed that it was locked, he refused to open it and started dragging me.

“That brought back memories of the experience I had been through that first time. So, it dawned on me that it was about to happen again. I did not want it to happen so I wrestled with him. I tried to push him and ran into one of the rooms to open the window to scream but he pulled me back with my hair and gave me a dirty slap.

“I hit my head on the wall and he had his way with me. I cried when I got home that day.”

Iyabo Ojo added that the fourth one happened while she was married with two kids in her husband’s house.

According to her, “the other one happened after I got married to my husband and had my kids, then we moved to Ikeja.”

“I was r3ped by one of the armed robbers who came to our house. It is not easy to talk about rape. No matter how much you talk about it, you have to realise that it is painful, but you are not alone,” the actress added.

Bolivia’s ex-president Jeanine Anez, many former ministers arrested in coup probe

The former interim president of Bolivia, Jeanine Áñez Chavez, and several former ministers have been arrested.

Prosecutors said she and the ministers took part in a coup against the then President Evo Morales in 2019.

Mr Morales resigned and fled Bolivia after protests and allegations of electoral fraud.

Ms Áñez has said she is the victim of a political vendetta by Mr Morales’s Mas Socialist party, which has since returned to power.

The party won a landslide victory in presidential and congressional elections in October last year, paving the way for Mr Morales to return to Bolivia from Argentina and take over the leadership of the Mas party.

His colleague Luis Arce was elected president, though Mr Arce stressed in a BBC interview last year that he would pursue his own political path, saying he was not Evo Morales.

As the most senior senator, Ms Áñez became caretaker president after Mr Morales fled. But members of the Mas party accused her, in cahoots with police and military figures, of engineering his overthrow.

She was detained in the early hours of Saturday in the city of Trinidad, government minister, Eduardo Del Castillo Del Carpio, announced on Facebook. She was then taken by plane to the city of La Paz.

FG apologises to Nigerians over N212.61 per litre new petrol price

The Federal Government on Friday, apologized to Nigerians over the latest N212.61 petrol price confusion in the country.

Speaking at the groundbreaking for the Rungas composite cylinder manufacturing plant in Alaro City Free Zone, Epe, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr Timipreye Sylva, urged Nigerians to disregard the increase, explaining that it was a mix-up.

Meanwhile, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, has declared that its publication of monthly template, does not amount to increasing the price of petroleum products, as such increases are supposed to be determined by market forces, under the current deregulation of the sector.

In a statement obtained by Vanguard, Friday, Executive Secretary, PPPRA, Abdulkadir Saidu, stated: “The attention of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) has been drawn to speculations about the increased pump price of PMS.

“The PPPRA by this release wishes to state clearly that the Guiding Prices posted on our website was only indicative of current market trends and do not translate to an increase in the pump price of PMS. However, publications by the media to this effect have been misconstrued and thus misleading.

“The Agency wishes to remind the general public of the introduction of the Market-Based Pricing Regime for PMS Regulation 2020 as gazetted by the Federal Government. Based on this regulation, prices are expected to be determined by market realities in line with the dictates of market forces.”

He stated: “One of the conditions for the implementation of the Market-Based Pricing Regime for PMS Regulation 2020 is the monthly release of Guiding Price to reflect current market fundamentals.

“The PPPRA in line with its mandate to maintain constant surveillance overall key indices relevant to pricing policy, monitors market trends on a daily basis to determine Guiding Prices.

“The Agency is not unaware of the challenges with the supply of PMS due to some concerns leading NNPC to be the sole importer of PMS. PPPRA is also mindful of the current discussion going on between the government and the Organised Labour on the deregulation policy. While consultation with relevant stakeholders is ongoing, PPPRA does not fix or announce prices and therefore there is no price increase.

The current PMS price is being maintained while consultations are being concluded.”

George Floyd: Minneapolis to pay $27 million to settle family lawsuit over death

The family of George Floyd and city of Minneapolis have agreed a record $27million settlement to resolve the lawsuit filed against the city and four cops involved in his death.

It is the largest pre-trial wrongful death settlement in US history.

George Floyd’s death in police custody stirred national and global protests over racial injustice and police brutality.

Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in May as Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Floyd’s dying pleas for help were captured on widely viewed bystander video, sparking one of the largest protest movements ever seen in the United States and outside of it.

Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the Floyd family, said the agreement was the largest pre-trial settlement of a wrongful death lawsuit in U.S. history.

The size signifies that a Black person’s death at the hands of police “will no longer be written off as trivial, unimportant or unworthy of consequences,” Crump said at a news conference where he was joined by Floyd’s relatives, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and other officials.

Floyd’s family was “pleased that this part of our tragic journey to justice for my brother George is resolved,” his sister Bridgett Floyd said in a statement.

“While our hearts are broken, we are comforted in knowing that even in death, George Floyd showed the world how to live,” her statement said.

The trial of Chauvin, who was fired by the police force, began earlier this week in Hennepin County’s district court on charges of murder and manslaughter.

Chauvin has pleaded not guilty and said he properly followed his police training.

Judge Peter Cahill has set aside about three weeks for jury selection in the high-profile case. Five men and two women had been seated as jurors as of Friday afternoon.

Last year, Floyd’s relatives sued the city, Chauvin and three other police officers involved in federal court, saying police used excessive force against Floyd in violation of his constitutional rights.

Although Frey promised on Friday that the city would be “unrelenting” in reforming its police department, it was not clear if the city was admitting wrongdoing as part of the settlement, and city officials did not immediately respond to queries.

“Every American remembers where they were when they first saw it,” Frey said of the video showing Floyd’s death. “Today’s settlement reflects our shared commitment to advancing racial justice.”

The settlement includes a $500,000 contribution from Floyd’s family to the community at the Minneapolis intersection where Floyd died, which has been barricaded against police access by residents and is filled with flowers and other tributes to Floyd.

Chauvin was helping arrest Floyd on the evening of May 25 on suspicion of his using a counterfeit $20 bill to buy cigarettes at the Cup Foods grocery store at the intersection.

The other three officers are due to go on trial later this year on charges of aiding and abetting Chauvin in Floyd’s death, which was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. The Minneapolis Police Department fired all four officers the day after the deadly arrest.

A 38-year-old lecturer at the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, Adebisi Ademola, was on Friday sentenced to six months imprisonment for his involvement in romance scam.

Justice Sikiru Oyinloye, of the Kwara state high court sitting in Ilorin, convicted Ademola.

He was among the 33 suspected fraudsters arrested on September 14, 2020 in Offa area of the state.

The Ilorin Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, arraigned the suspect on a count charge bordering on romance scam, an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 95 of the Penal code law of Northern Nigeria.

The charge sheet read; ” That you, Adebisi Ademola ( a.k.a Dawn Ayero) sometime in September 2020, or thereabout within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, attempted to commit an offence of cheating by personation by pretending and representing yourself to be a white lady called Dawn Ayero to one Donald Oakes, who is purportedly in love with the said Oakes as it is contained in your Gmail account; dawnayero@gmail.com and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 95 of the Penal code laws of Northern Nigeria.”

Ademola, pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

Following his ‘guilty plea’, Counsel to the anti-graft agency, Andrew Akoja, invited an operative of the commission, Olumide Olasode, to the witness box to review the facts of the information case.

Olasode, narrated how intelligence report led to the arrest of the defendant on September 14,2020 at Offa area of Kwara state.

Petition from concerned citizens of Offa, statement of the defendant and all the fraudulent messages printed out of his email, were tendered and admitted in evidence by the court.

Thereafter, Akoja, urged the court to convict the defendant based on his plea, the exhibits tendered and the evidence of the sole prosecution witness (PW1).

Justice Oyinloye, in his judgement, found Ademola guilty of the charge and accordingly sentenced him.

He however, gave him M50,000 option of fine, and ordered the forfeiture of his phone used as the instrument to commit the crime to the federal government.
