Nigeria must prevent Covid-19 third wave, PTF warns

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Monday warns Nigerians to be careful so that the country does not slide into possible third wave of the coronavirus.

Italy, France and Germany are some of the countries currently experiencing third wave of the virus, with Italy scheduled for fresh lockdown, whereby people will only be allowed to leave their homes for essential errands. Most shops will be closed, along with bars and restaurants.

Italy had experienced 27,000 new cases and 380 deaths last Friday.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation and PTF Chairman, Boss Mustapha, at the briefing in Abuja, said that no one could yet heave a sigh of relief despite availability of COVID-19 vaccines.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the virus is very potent and people still get infected. It is also a fact that the vaccination process has only just begun. It has been reported that some countries are recording a third wave of cases.

“The PTF will like to caution Nigerians on home-based care as there may not be enough facilities and personnel to manage patients in times of emergencies,” Mustapha stated.

Oxford AstraZeneca: Nigeria insists vaccine safe as 13 countries suspend use

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has insisted that the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine is safe for Nigerians despite the growing global concerns over possible side effects.

Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, the National Incident Manager (NIM) of the PTF on COVID-19 made this known on Monday in Abuja at the joint national briefing of the task force.

However, on Thursday night, eight European countries – Denmark, Norway, Austria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Iceland, and Luxembourg – suspended all or part of its roll-out as a precaution.

The suspension was to enable them investigate concerns relating to blood clots and other side effects caused by the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.

Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Netherlands are the latest countries to suspend the use of the vaccine over concerns that it causes blood clots.

Spain’s health minister, Carolina Darias on Monday said: “It is a temporary and precautionary suspension until the risks can be evaluated by the European Medicines Agency.”

But Nigeria’s Muhammad insisted that the clinical trials had shown that the side effects are “generally mild’’.

He said that the WHO had in the last three days, through a series of briefings, vouched for the vaccine’s safety and efficacy.

He said it had been proven that that the vaccine has about 70 percent efficacy level.

He advised those who might have received the vaccine, but who have felt side reactions for more than 24 hours, to report through the appropriate channels at the state level.

“The arrival of the vaccine is something that is very good and exciting in the sense that a combination of the vaccine and the non-pharmaceutical interventions can help us see the light at the end of the tunnel within a very short period of time.

“In the last few hours, we have suffered a major setback regarding the content safety and efficacy of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.

“We have seen in the news how some countries have deferred the usage of this vaccine or have suspended its use. That list of the European countries is growing.

“It is very reassuring to see that the regulatory agencies in those countries have continued to emphasise that the vaccine is safe and that the incidence of blood clots reported in the patients is not higher than the risk of blood clotting in people who are not vaccinated. That is really something reassuring.”

Outrage as Ivory Coast ‘unlawfully jails’ Nigerian lady 20 years

Babalola, a trader based in Bondoukou, Cote d’Ivoire, was said to have been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment after a theft case she reported to the police was allegedly turned against her.

Punch correspondent learnt that Babalola had been in prison since 2019 after she refused to grant the request of a divisional police officer to drop the case.

A journalist, David Hundeyin, who shared Babalola’s story on Twitter, explained that the victim’s flat was burgled and items worth over N300,000 stolen, adding that she reported the matter to the police and later travelled to Nigeria to see her sick mother.

However, upon Babalola’s return to Ivory Coast, she was notified that the thief had been caught.

Hundeyin tweeted, “The thief turned out to be a 14-year-old boy who lived nearby. His embarrassed dad apologised and admitted that his son was a habitual thief. The items had already been sold.

“Itunu (Babalola) reported this to the police, who told her to return on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. The appointment held on Wednesday, November 6. There, she says the DPO informed her that the suspect was his nephew. He then offered her a settlement worth roughly N100,000 to drop the case.

“She refused the settlement, citing the disparity between the value of the stolen items and what was offered. Next, she says the visibly enraged DPO tried everything to frustrate her into dropping the case, including making her travel to Abidjan for a police appointment.

“In Abidjan, she hired a lawyer to attend the appointment with her, all to no avail as the police refused to cooperate. Frustrated, she returned home to Bondoukou. Around 5pm the following day, a convoy of police vehicles showed up outside her house and publicly arrested her.

“On getting to the station, she was charged with theft — the theft of her own items in her own apartment. She spent the next four days in police custody, after which she was taken out of the cell and offered her freedom if she agreed to sign papers dropping her case.

“For whatever reason despite the clear bad faith displayed by the Ivorian police, Itunu says she rejected the offer and chose to go to court instead. She says she then overheard an officer saying ‘Elle est une Nigériane? Elle mourra ici!’ (She’s a Nigerian? She will die here).

“The decision to go to court turned out to be a monumental error of judgment compounded by her own naivety about the Ivorian justice system. The (French-speaking) court did not allow her adequate legal representation or give her a chance to properly state her case.

“She was speedily convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Further complicating this was her decision to identify herself to the court as ‘Becky Paul’. She says she did this to avoid getting her family name mixed up in bad news and potentially upsetting her aged mom.

“As a result, for the past one year and 4 months since her conviction, Itunu, alias Becky Paul, has become, to all intents and purposes, a forgotten inmate at the notorious Maison d’arrêt et de Correction Bondoukou (Bondoukou Remand and Correctional Facility).

“When her Nigerian friends in Cote d’Ivoire approached the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan to provide consular assistance for her case, officials reportedly asked for N400,000 to get her a passport before anything can be done.”

Hundeyin, who noted that Babalola had spent her savings in trying to clear her name, said she had attempted suicide twice.

Nigerians on social media started a campaign, #JusticeForItunu, calling on the Federal Government to ensure her release from prison.

A Twitter user, @Sikowitz17, urged the government to also ensure that other Nigerians detained unlawfully were released.

He said, “As we get #justiceforitunu, please let’s reach out to other African countries to get our citizens wrongly accused out of their prisons too. Schooling in the Republic of Benin, I know how many Nigerians got arrested for practically nothing and are still in prison today.”

Another Twitter user, Joseph Yomi, said, “Whenever I read about how some African countries are hostile to Nigerians, it just makes me sad. Let’s create more awareness about this Ìtunu case until something is done about it. #justiceforitunu.”

Another user with the alias, Pontius Pilate, stated that Babalola’s case was one of many Nigerians unlawfully detained in Ivory Coast.

Reacting, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, through its Twitter page @nidcom_gov, promised to investigate the matter.

It tweeted, “We will investigate and get back with our findings. Our mission in Abidjan will also help out.”

The first movie I kissed in was titled, Every Woman, and it was because the director asked for it. I can go as far as the director wants or as the role requires. Thailand conducts MASS TRIAL for youths who allegedly insulted the king at a protest

A mass trial began in Thailand on Monday for activists accused of sedition and insulting the powerful king at a major protest last year.

The protest is one of a series of mass demonstrations against the country’s military-backed establishment.

The 22 demonstrators deny charges of committing sedition and a litany of other offences, which includes lese majeste, a crime punishable by up to 15-year imprisonment for each count.

“They can lock me up but cannot lock up the truth,” protest leader Parit Chiwarak shouted as he arrived in a prison truck, defiantly flashing the three-finger “Hunger Games” salute synonymous with the youth movement.

“The truth is always the truth whether in prison, under torture, or awaiting execution, the truth is the truth,” Mr. Parit added.

The accused who is a 22-year old is also among seven defendants held in pre-trial detention and accused of insulting King Maha Vajiralongkorn, as well as sedition.

Thailand’s youth movement has posed the biggest challenge so far to the Prime Minister and former coup leader Prayuth Chan-ocha.

Mr. Chan-ocha was said to have engineered a process that would preserve the political status quo and keep him in power after the 2019 election, however, Mr. Parit has rejected that.

Protesters also broke a traditional taboo by demanding reform of the powerful monarchy, saying the constitution drafted by the military after the 2014 coup gives the king too much power.

The length of the trial will be determined after the defence and prosecution discuss how many witnesses both sides will call upon for the case, which stems from a September rally.

Strange disease hits Kano, as residents urinate blood

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has collected water samples and flavour products for laboratory analysis, following the outbreak of strange infectious disease in Kano metropolis.

The State Coordinator of the agency, Shaba Muhammad, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Kano, that the samples were referred to its laboratory in Kaduna for analysis.

Mr. Muhammad said the agency received report of manifestation of a strange disease suspected to be caused by drinking sachet water and locally processed drinks in the metropolis.

Delta housewife kills husband with machete for daring to sleep outside their home

An enraged housewife, Mrs Okiemute Dafe, was on Monday arrested by operatives of the Delta State Police Command for allegedly hacking her husband to death with a machete following a domestic misunderstanding.

It was gathered that the woman reportedly hacked her husband, simply identified as Dafe, to death on Kulup Street, off Ekrejegbo in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.

Sources said trouble started when the deceased, who slept outside the matrimonial home the previous night, returned home on Monday to be confronted by his angry wife.

It was gathered that the disagreement between the couple degenerated into a physical confrontation and the suspect attacked the deceased.

The suspect reportedly attacked him with a cutlass on the head.

The woman was said to have earlier stabbed the victim before using cutlass on him.

Consequently, Dafe, also known as Best Cartel, sustained severe cuts before he was rushed to the Ughelli Central Hospital by neighbours.

However, he was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital.

It was gathered that the woman, on seeing the gravity of her action, attempted to run away from the scene, but she was apprehended by youths and neighbours.

The angry mob attempted to set Okiemute ablaze after the husband was pronounced dead.

The woman was, however, rescued by policemen from the Ughelli Police Area Command.

Unsatisfied, the mob followed the police team to the station and attempted breaking into the station, but they were dispersed by operatives, who resorted to firing gunshots in the air.

The acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, saying it occurred when the couple had a disagreement.

The police spokesman also confirmed that Okiemute had been arrested and was currently in custody undergoing interrogation.
