Wanted serial killer arrested in Ogun [photo]

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested Suleiman Ganiyu, a notorious serial killer and member of Eiye cult group who has been on wanted list of the Command.

The command, in a release by its spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested following a distress call from Itamerin Comprehensive High School, Ago-Iwoye that the suspect came to the school premises and started shooting sporadically simply because his younger brother who is a student of the school was beaten.

Upon the distress call, the DPO Ago-Iwoye, CSP Paul Omiwole led his patrol team to the school but before their arrival, the suspect has taken to his heel. He was subsequently traced to his hideout at Imosan Street, Oru-Ijebu where he was eventually apprehended.

On interrogation, he confessed being a leading member of Eiye confraternity. He confessed further that he was the one who killed one Awokale Olusegun a.k.a Lala on the 27th of February 2020 over a supremacy battle following which he was declared wanted by the police.

He also confessed being responsible for the death of one “Babasco” and one Dapo at Ijebu-Igbo in 2015 during a clash between his group and Aye cult group. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was the brain behind a series of violent cult related clashes in Ago-Iwoye, Awa-Ijebu, Oru-Ijebu, Ilaponu and Ijebu-Igbo in the recent past.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation and subsequent prosecution.

Tanzanian President, John Pombe Magufuli dies at 61

Tanzania's President John Magufuli has died aged 61, the country's vice-president has announced.

He died on Wednesday from heart complications at a hospital in Dar es Salaam, Samia Suluhu Hassan said in an address on state television.

Magufuli had not been seen in public for more than two weeks, and rumours have been circulating about his health.

Opposition politicians said last week that he had contracted Covid-19, but this has not been confirmed.

Magufuli was one of Africa's most prominent coronavirus sceptics, and called for prayers and herbal-infused steam therapy to counter the virus.

"It is with deep regret that I inform you that today... we lost our brave leader, the president of the Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli," Vice-President Hassan said in the announcement.

She said there would be 14 days of national mourning and flags would fly at half mast.

According to Tanzania's constitution, Ms Hassan will be sworn in as the new president and should serve the remainder of Magufuli's five-year team which he began last year.

4.5m people in Lagos are into illicit drugs - NDLEA chairman, Buba Marwa says

The chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Buba Marwa has said 4.5 million people in Lagos state are involved in illicit drugs.

Speaking during a visit to the Lagos NDLEA command on Tuesday, Marwa said the state accounts for 30 percent of the total number of drug abusers in the country.

In his remarks on Tuesday, the former military governor of Lagos ordered operatives of the agency to wipe out drug cartels in the state.

“In the country, an estimate of 15 million people belong to one or more aspects of illicit drug dealing. This means about 4.5 million people in Lagos state are into illicit drugs,” NAN quoted him as saying.

The NDLEA chairman said there are about one million patent medicine stores in the country, but noted that such facilities have aided the sale of illicit drugs.

“Out of the figure, only 58,000 patent medicine outlets are registered, while about one million others remain unregistered. This has really enhanced sales of illicit drugs in the state,” he said.

Only Yoruba Obas can decide if there will be Oduduwa Nation or not - Oluwo of Iwo

The paramount ruler of Iwo, Osun State, Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi has said that only the council of traditional rulers in Yorubaland can decide if there will be Oduduwa nation or not.

He said there are factors to consider before the agitation for self-determination of the Yoruba nation can be pursued.

Akanbi told SaharaReporters in an interview on Wednesday while reacting to a publication that quoted him as saying whoever from Yorubaland that does not vote for Bola Tinubu in 2023 is a bastard.

He said, “About endorsing Tinubu, I’m not a politician, so I don’t endorse people to vie for political seats. All I was trying to say was that Yoruba people should unite to vote for our own people if the opportunity presents itself. If you look at me very well, I have always wanted the unity of the Yoruba people.”

Reacting to the rising agitation for the self-determination of the Oduduwa nation, he argued that Yoruba will think of resources to sustain them among other issues before venturing into the process. He stated that only Lagos State has the capacity to be financially independent.

“Have you thought about the allocation of the civil servants? Have you thought about how to generate revenue to pay them? Have you thought about how to be financially independent? For instance, in Osun State, about N2 billion is needed to pay civil servants, have you considered that?

“Then, you will think of other states. We have six states in the South-West, it seems only Lagos State has the capacity. This agitation for self-determination calls for wisdom and consideration.”

Many injured, properties looted as cultists clash in Ketu

Many people were on Wednesday morning feared injured and properties looted after rival cult groups clashed at Ikosi in Ketu, Lagos.

The clash was said to have started on Tuesday night on Ikosi Road, with the factions using guns, cutlasses and bottles without caution.

This is happening barely 48 hours after the state government signed into law, the 21-year jail term for cultists, members of unlawful society.

It was gathered that the violence was a result of control of territory and revenue generation from the Ketu fruit market.

The Nation reports that the battle for control of the territory between members of the Aiye and Eiye cult groups has over the years led to deadly clashes in the Ketu and Ikorodu areas of the state.

According to residents, Wednesday’s violence commenced around 6:25 am at Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) park, Ketu Bus Stop as passengers waiting to board buses to work were attacked by armed hoodlums.

The thugs were said to have robbed innocent bystanders including students at knife-point, while others went about setting people’s properties ablaze.

Residents who took to social media to raise alarm about the outbreak of violence lamented that the chaotic situation continued for several hours in front of the Local Government secretariat without intervention from law enforcement agencies.

DPR seals 2 Lagos filling stations

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) on Wednesday sealed two filling stations in Lagos for under-dispensing of petrol.

Mr Ayorinde Cardoso, Zonal Operations Controller, DPR, Lagos, confirmed the development after an inspection visit to eight filling stations located in Ikorodu Road, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and Ikeja areas of the state.

“The sealed stations were under-dispensing and there are sanctions. They will have to, first of all, pay their sanctions and they will rectify their pumps to the acceptable standard.

“Then we will come back and re-evaluate the pumps before they can be allowed to reopen,” Cardoso said.

He said the intensification of routine surveillance by the DPR in Lagos was aimed at monitoring product price, quality, availability, pump efficiency as well as water ingress in some tanks.

Cardoso said the petrol stations inspected were selling fuel between N162 to N165 per litre which was the approved price band by the government.

“Routine surveillance is continuous and we are not the only one doing it. We have several teams going round in different places,” he said.

Cardoso advised members of the public against panic buying ahead of the forthcoming Easter season, noting that there was product sufficiency in Lagos State.

Pictured! Man sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for raping 5-year-old girl to death in Bayelsa

A Sagbama High Court sitting in Yenagoa has sentenced a 21-years-old man, Timiondu Jephtath, to 10 years imprisonment for raping a five-year-old girl to death sometime in 2016 at Akede Community of Sagbama Local Government Area of the State.

The Presiding Judge, Justice E.G Omukoro in his ruling in the suit numbered SHC/4C/2016 with a one-count charge of murder brought against the accused by the State Ministry of Justice, declared that the charge becomes manslaughter due to the inability of the prosecution to prove the intent to commit murder.

In his ruling, after considering the defendant’s plea of allocutus, Justice Omukoro declared that the court is mindful of the youthful age of the defendant who could be redeemed and make amends by way of atonement for his action, ordered that “the defendant be detained at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Yenagoa or elsewhere as the Governor may determine for a period of 10 years at the pleasure of the State.”

It would be recalled that in 2016, the accused who was aged 16 years, was arrested for raping to death the five years old girl and flinging her lifeless body into an abandoned fish pond close to his residence.

A private legal practitioner, Deme Pamosoo Esq, who acted as the counsel to the victim’s parents ensured that the victim’s body was recovered, an autopsy conducted by the Police and a watertight case file, presented to the State Ministry of Justice for the Director of Public Prosecution recommendation for trial.

Reacting to the development, the Acting Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Ebimietei Ottah, described the ruling as a victory to the victims of rape, defilement and violence against women in the state, “it is a sound warning to the general public that it is no longer business as usual in Bayelsa state. Once you are brought before the law, the law will take its course and catch up with you.”

“It has been a worrisome practice in Bayelsa State and more worrisome are the issue of negotiation with culprits by parents of victims of defilement or rape. It can no longer be tolerated or swept under the carpet as settlement. We call on parents, teachers, neighbours and guardians to be vigilant and speak out against cases of rape, defilement and violence against women in the state.”

US consulate contacts Nigerian visa applicants denied in President Trump's era

The US consulate in Lagos has announced that it has contacted all Visa applicants who were denied during the Trump administration.

The consulate announced this in a tweet on its verified Twitter handle.

It said it is prioritising the processing of the pending cases and gradually restoring routine visa operations in accordance with Covid-19 safety immigration protocols.

President Joe Biden on his first day in office reversed the travel restriction imposed on certain categories of Nigerian visa applicants.

The Consulate dispelled media reports that all those denied visas on or after January 20, 2020, can re-apply.

It noted that the announcement only has to do with certain immigrant visa cases and does not apply to tourists, business, students and other nonimmigrant visas.

“Nonimmigrant visa applicants who were previously refused and would like to apply again will need to submit a new visa application (DS-160) and pay a new visa application processing fee,” the statement read.

Chude Jideonwo reveals struggles with mental illness, Tourette’s syndrome

Red Media Africa co-boss, Chude Jideonwo, used to interviewing people, exchanged places with actress Elvina Ibru, to reveal his shocking personal health struggles.

Chude revealed in the interview that he has been struggling secretly with mental illness and Tourette’s Syndrome.

“I feel like my body is not my own,” Jideonwo said in the interview.

The interview was held to mark Jideonwo’s 36th birthday which held on 16 March.

He opened up about his struggle with depression in law school, being diagnosed with high blood pressure as a teenager and living with mental illness.

Recalling the first time he was diagnosed with mental illness, he said, “A doctor in the UK diagnosed me with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and he said to me, ‘So Chude tell me, how long have you *been living with OCD?’ He took it for granted that whatever country I was coming from, I had already been diagnosed with OCD”.

Chude had also been living with a neurological disorder called Tourette’s Syndrome – diagnosed by a different doctor in 2016, who described it as “OCD that has acquired physical and emotional expression”.

“The first physical sign of Tourettes is movement disorders and the second is vocal tics which I used to experience very badly”, said Chude.

“I remember telling the doctor that I don’t feel comfortable in my own body, and that I feel like my body is not my own”, he continued.

When asked to give a word of encouragement to people dealing with Tourette’s or any other medical challenge, Chude said, “Imagine me spending years of my life twitching and doctors are telling me that it’s nothing. Like if it’s nothing, then that means there’s nothing I can do, so am I condemned?”

“My advice is: If you feel it, then it’s valid, you no dey craze and even if you dey craze, it’s still valid. If it doesn’t feel right then it probably isn’t right because you’re the one in your body”.

“Even till now, my mother’s voice is still in my head. She makes it difficult for me to cut myself unnecessary slack. To be honest without my mother – if my mother had left me at the time when she wanted to leave the marriage, I don’t know what would have become of me,” Chude said.

Chude further divulged several interesting details about his past, ranging from multiple surgeries to the first time he experienced depression as a Nigerian law school student and the strained relationship he had with his father.

Even as he shared his story with the rest of the world, Chude acknowledged that he “shouldn’t be here today with all these adverse experiences” he had faced.

However, he hopes that by sharing his story, more people will be inspired to stay strong and keep fighting, no matter what.

I think Putin is a killer and he will pay - Biden says in interview

US President Joe Biden said he believes President Vladimir Putin of Russia is a “killer” when asked by ABC News host George Stephanopoulos.

Biden added that he will “pay” for interfering in the 2020 presidential election in an ABC News interview that aired Wednesday.

His pre-taped remarks aired after the U.S. intelligence community’s first assessment of foreign interference in the campaign.

The report said Putin likely authorized influence operations aimed at promoting then-President Donald Trump and discrediting Biden’s candidacy.

“He will pay a price,” Biden said in response to the findings.

Biden told ABC News that he had a “long chat” with Putin and that “the price he will pay you will see shortly”.

Biden said he had warned Putin of potential consequences to election meddling when the two spoke following his inauguration in January.

“We had a long talk, he and I, when we — I know him relatively well. And the conversation started off, I said, ‘I know you and you know me. If I establish this [interference] occurred, then be prepared.”

Asked whether he thinks the Russian president is a “killer,” Biden replied: “I do.”

He noted that there are still areas in which Moscow and Washington can find common ground despite the two powers’ chilled relations.

“There are places where it’s in our mutual interest to work together,” he said. “That’s why I renewed the [New] START agreement. That occurred while he’s doing this.”

Biden also described his March 2011 meeting with Putin, who was then Russia’s prime minister, saying: “President Bush had said I looked in his eyes and saw his soul. I said look in your eyes, and I don’t think you have a soul. He looked back and he said, ‘We understand each other’.”

The U.S. intelligence report’s findings are likely to be followed by the Biden administration’s announcement of new sanctions as soon as next week, CNN and Reuters reported, citing unnamed officials.

Biden did not elaborate on the possible Russian sanctions during the ABC News interview.

Biden’s comments drew immediate condemnation from the speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament Vyacheslav Volodin, who called them an “attack on Russia” and “hysteria due to weakness.”

Japan's failure to recognize same-s.e.x marriage is 'unconstitutional,' court rules

A Japanese court has ruled that not allowing same-s.e.x marriage is unconstitutional, a landmark decision that could herald a new era for marriage equality in the country.

It's the first time that a court has ruled on the constitutionality of same-s.e.x marriage in Japan, the only Group of Seven (G7) country that has not recognized either same-s.e.x civil unions or same-s.e.x marriage.

The case began in 2019, when three couples in Hokkaido prefecture filed a lawsuit claiming 1 million yen (about $9,160) in damages each for the psychological harm caused by the government not allowing same-s.e.x marriage.

Japan does not recognize same-s.e.x unions nationwide, although some parts of the country issue "partnership certificates" that grant some rights benefiting heterosexual couples to same-s.e.x couples.

Sapporo District Court in Hokkaido ruled Wednesday the government's lack of recognition for same-sex marriage was in breach of a section of the constitution that requires equal laws for everyone.

But the court dismissed the couples' claims for damages.

The three couples were among a number across Japan that are suing the government, arguing that the current law on same-s.e.x marriage was in breach of their constitutional rights, and they should be afforded the same legal rights and privileges as heterosexual couples.

Wednesday's ruling is the first verdict in those ongoing cases.

"Today's ruling recognized that we actually exist," said a plaintiff known by the pseudonym Takashi. "I want a society where sexual minorities have hope and a choice in their future."

Kanae Doi, Japan director for non-profit Human Rights Watch (HRW), said the ruling alone would not legalize same-s.e.x marriage in the country -- that would need a Supreme Court ruling, which could take several years.

Alternatively, Japan's legislature, the Diet, could pass a law making same-s.e.x marriage legal, although there is almost no appetite among the ruling party to do so, she said.

But Wednesday's "landmark" ruling was still significant as it was a step towards legalizing same-s.e.x marriage, she said.

Takeharu Kato, the plaintiffs' lawyer, said he was also moved by the verdict. "I never expected the court would rule this clearly," he said in a news conference, adding that the plaintiffs are now considering taking the case to a higher court.
