Friend’s death: Police frees US lady after 44 days in detention

The police in Lagos on Thursday released an American lady, Kari R’ouke, who was arrested and kept in custody over the death of her Nigerian host, Ayomide Michael.

R’ouke’s lawyer, Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), announced his client’s release in a statement on Thursday.

The American, who was picked at the airport on February 9 while making her way out of Nigeria, spent about 44 days in the police cell in Lagos.

Her lawyer had raised the alarm over her continued detention by the police, saying he was “scared that something devastating may happen to Kari Ann R’ouke if she is not released forthwith.”

Adegboruwa said the police refused to release the American despite that the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions said there was no prima facie case against her and three others.

The American was said to have arrived in Nigeria on January 22, 2021 on the invitation of the late Michael.

She and Michael were said to have lodged in a hotel on Victoria Island on the same day, while Michael “became unconscious and lifeless” in the early hours of February 8.

After intercepting R’ouke at the airport, the police had submitted a case file to the Lagos DPP, seeking legal advice on the possibility of prosecuting her and three Nigerians for murder.

But a certified true copy of the DPP legal advice sighted by our correspondent indicated that the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs A. O. Adeyemi, on behalf of the state’s Attorney General, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), advised against the prosecution of the American and other suspects, citing insufficient facts to sustain murder charges.

Reacting to the eventual release of the American on Thursday, Adegboruwa, in a statement, appealed to the police to show greater respect for the rights of citizens.

He said, “This case has shown the intolerable level of impunity prevalent within the law enforcement agencies, whereby the police did not comply with a valid directive of the Ministry of Justice, which is the body recognised by the law for the prosecution of suspects.

“Kari Ann R’ouke was still being detained even after the police got the legal advice since March 5, 2021.”

My house marked for demolition for political reasons, Okorocha’s spokesman cries out

The Owerri building of the spokesperson of a former governor of Imo state, Sam Onwuemeodo, has been marked for demolition by officials of the state government.

Onwuemeodo, who served Rochas Okorocha as Chief Press Secretary between 2013 and 2019 is currently the ex-governor’s Special Adviser on Media.

Onwuemeodo, who spoke with The Punch in Owerri on Thursday, said the Governor Hope Uzodinma-led administration was “politically victimizing him”.

He said that the only reason his building was marked for demolition was because he “is associated with Okorocha politically”.

He said, “They have marked the house where I have been living with my family for demolition. As of now, nobody has told me the reason for marking my house for demolition.

“On Friday, March 19, 2021, someone called and told me to be very careful, that the government has decided to demolish my house. That by Tuesday, March 23, 2021, my house would be marked for demolition. And to avoid making it look personal, they would also mark other houses around my own.

“Following this information, on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, I decided not to leave the house early. By 11.22 am, two Hummer buses with tinted glasses came and parked in front of my gate. I decided only to watch them. The two buses were filled with young men I wouldn’t like to describe as thugs and about six hefty men in Mobile Police uniform, fully armed.

“In 2011, when Owelle Okorocha became governor, I applied again and in 2013, a land was approved for me and I paid all the necessary fees and my receipts are intact. In other words, the land was not donated or “dashed” to me. I applied to the Ministry of Lands as a bonafide citizen of the state.

“I got the allocation and paid the needed or demanded fees. I have been living in the house with my family. Let the governor or his government tell the world why he wants to demolish my house. But if it is because of my working relationship with Okorocha, they have lost it entirely.”

Reacting, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Oguwike Nwachuku said, “This government is not interested in any political vendetta and has never been after anybody. On the contrary, the government will protect every citizen of the state who does the right thing in line with the rule of law.

“Those who deliberately build at places in violation of the Owerri master plan should not expect government to protect them or the people to clap for them.”

New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister slams Isreal Adesanya HARD over r3pe threat

UFC star Israel Adesanya has been slammed by New Zealand’s deputy prime minister for making ‘flippant comments’ about r3pe after sending a grim taunt to a rival fighter.

The middleweight champion has received significant backlash for his offensive video after hitting out at Kevin Holland by saying in a now-deleted Instagram post: “Bro, I will f***ing r3pe you.”

And the New Zealander has now been criticised by his own country’s deputy prime minister Grant Robertson, who has taken a dim view on his words and appeared to call on the UFC to take action against him.

“There is never a time to make flippant comments about r3pe. It’s just not something anybody should do.”

“I’m sure Israel understands that. I believe he has deleted the tweet in question. It will be up to the UFC as to what they do.

“But I would certainly be making clear to him, and to anybody actually, that we have to take r3pe seriously.

“It’s not an issue that anyone should be making jokes or flippant comments about at all.”

Adesanya, who was born in Nigeria but has been a New Zealand citizen since he was 10, did not respond to the comments directly but appeared unperturbed by the criticism.

He tweeted a gif alongside the words, “Incoming click bait NZ media in 3, 2, 1… This is what it’s all about…CLOUT!!”

This is not the first time the 31-year-old has landed himself in hot water for disrespectful comments.

Last February he had to issue an apology after saying his then-upcoming opponent Yoel Romero would ‘crumble like the twin towers’ against him and vowed to be ‘more careful with my words in the future’.

Police hunt Lagos party organiser as two men die over lover

The Lagos State Police Command has started an investigation into the killing of two friends at a party in the Mafoluku area of Oshodi, Lagos State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the police were searching for the party organiser to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of the friends.

Punch Metro gathered that 35-year-old Segun Afuye went to a naming ceremony with his friend, Sodiq Elewure, on Wednesday.

Afuye was said to have discovered that Elewure was allegedly having an affair with his girlfriend, identified simply as Kafayat.

An argument reportedly ensued between the two friends, as Afuye allegedly stabbed Elewure with a broken bottle in the neck.

The victim died on the spot.

A mob was said to have attacked Afuye and beaten him to a pulp.

The police spokesperson, Adejobi, said policemen attempted to save Afuye, adding that he died in a hospital.

He said, “There was a party yesterday (Wednesday) around the Mafoluku area of Oshodi and the two friends were there. One Segun Afuye stabbed his friend to death and immediately an angry mob lynched him.

“He was critically injured, rescued by the police from the place, but he gave up the ghost in the hospital. Preliminary investigation shows that they were fighting on the issue of girlfriend and that was what led to the hot argument before Afuye stabbed his friend.

“The two of them are dead, but the matter is under investigation. We are looking for the person who arranged the party to know if that was what led to their death or there was more to the story, to curtail any further ugly occurrence.”

SARS killed my son over recharge cards – Father tells Oyo panel

Kolawole Owoade, the father of late Adewale Owoade, on Thursday, narrated how officials of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) murdered his son.

Owoade was led in evidence by his counsel, Diekola Rufai, when he appealed before the Oyo State Panel of Inquiry on Police brutality.

The father, according to NAN, said the police unit shot his son in the back with the bullet perforating his stomach and intestine.

The complainant recalled that the incident occured in January 2006 when one Lasunkanmi, their neighbour, accused Adewale of stealing recharge cards.

Lasunkanmi invited the operatives to search the house where the Owoades lived with other tenants.

“Adewale panicked, ran out of the room and was shot by an official of SARS called Kola. The SARS officials also followed us to the hospital he later died”, the father said.

The death certificate, medical report and receipt of other expenses incurred by the family were admitted as exhibits by the panel.

Owoade added that Adewale’s mother became seriously ill as a result of shock. He appealed for fairness in the matter.

The father demanded N50million damages for the surgical operation on his wife and for other payments made before the demise of his son.

The prosecuting counsel, Matthew Oje, told the panel that after the incident, SARS frustrated all efforts made by the family to get justice.

The panel chairman, retired Justice Badejoko Adeniji adjourned the matter until April 14, 2021.

Adamawa Poly shut as celebration turns violent

The Adamawa State Polytechnic Yola (SPY) has been shut down.

This followed violence, which resulted from what was supposed to be a celebration by some graduating students.

The students were said to have taken to the busy street along which the main campus is located in Jimeta on Thursday afternoon, causing obstruction and prompting intervention from security operatives.

The security operatives, in a joint police-military operation, reportedly fired tear gas to disperse the increasingly unruly youths who piped low only to go wild later and to destroy valuable campus structures.

Management of the polytechnic announced its closure late on Thursday “for security reasons” and asked students to leave campus.

A statement signed by the registrar of the Polytechnic, Mrs Rebecca Kinjir, instructed students who were yet to finish their examination to hold on till after easter break.

Rector of the polytechnic, Professor Ibrahim Umar, who spoke to newsmen late on Thursday, specified that the final year students destroyed a 500-seat multipurpose lecture theatre, Students’ Union Government building and a male hostel during the “unprovoked riot” sparked by revelry and celebration by outgoing students.

He explained, “Outgoing students usually celebrate what they call signing out. Each department celebrates this signing out. They usually go round the campus in celebration. The departments started this on Monday after finishing their exams, that is second semester exam.

“After their exams, Science Laboratory Technology students went to the football pitch to celebrate, but the security men reported to me that what they were doing is going to create problems because they were taking bottles of beer and smoking.

“I asked them to call the union leaders of the department. When the union leaders came, we told them that what they were doing is illegal. We asked them to stop the signing out immediately.

“The Students Affairs Division issued a circular that there should be no more signing out. But this morning when we came in, students from Crime Department also finished their exam around 10:00am and they started celebrating the so called signing out and security personnel, civil defence and the students’ union president told them to stop because there was a circular to that effect.

“They started throwing stones at the security personnel. Along the line, they damaged the car of the student union president. From there, they mobilized themselves. They went out of the school premises although security men tried to stop them.

“They became agitated and chased the security men. They came out and moved up to the roundabout. We invited security personnel of Operation Farauta who chased them back to the campus using teargas.

“They mobilized again and security men started throwing teargas at them. The students in turn threw stones at the security personnel. But unfortunately, the security men were very few so they couldn’t confront the students.

“The police sent for reinforcements but before the reinforcement came, the students started serious destruction. They damaged the school’s 500 capacity multipurpose lecture theatre, they burnt the students union building completely and burnt part of Block E, that is male hostel.”
