Colloquium: I chose Kano to prove Yoruba, Fulani are one —Tinubu

All Progressives Congress stalwart, Bola Tinubu, says he chose Kano State as the venue for his 12th colloquium and 69th birthday to prove to Nigerians that the Yoruba and Fulani people are united.

Tinubu, who is rumoured to be nursing a Presidential ambition, also made a veiled reference to the marriage of the daughter of Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje; to the son of the late ex-Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, which took place in Kano in 2018.

He said this showed the unity between people of different ethnic groups.

Tinubu therefore faulted secessionists groups’ agitations.

The APC leader said, “Why are we in Kano? It is to demonstrate to Nigerians at this critical time. It is because there is a Fulani man, a herder (man) who gave his daughter to a farmer, (a) Yoruba man… and some people are agitating wrongly.”

The former governor said he was therefore encouraged to mark his birthday in Kano.

He also argued that if Nigeria breaks into smaller countries,  he would not have been able to visit Kano without a visa.

Tinubu stated, “I was encouraged to go and spend a couple of days with my brother and in-law in Kano and demonstrate that he has not quarrelled with me, he has not seceded from Nigeria, I didn’t need a passport or visa to get to Kano, maybe others will have peace of conscience, live in peace and harmony and be loving to one another. That is what Ganduje and I are showing to Nigerians and that is the purpose of this colloquium end of story.”

The former governor further said, “All of you here should thank Ganduje for what we have been able to show Nigerians together. That a Fulani man and a Yoruba man can show the entire nation that in harmony, we can show Nigerians that perseverance creates understanding. It is a common blood that flows through our veins.”

Iwobi’s COVID-19 test result is fake – Rohr

The COVID-19 test result that prevented Everton midfielder, Alex Iwobi from participating in the African Cup of Nations qualifying game against Benin Republic on Saturday is fake, according to Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.

Rohr said that the midfielder will be fielded against Lesotho on Tuesday in the last match of the AFCON qualifiers.

Recall that Nigeria booked their place in Cameroon even before the kick off of the match against Benin Republic on Saturday following the goalless draw in an earlier game between Lesotho and Sierra Leone.

Iwobi, who was listed in Rohr’s XI for the game against Squirrels was withdrawn before filing out after he was said to have tested positive for COVID-19.

And on Monday, Colin Udoh, ESPN journalist, tweeted that, “Gernot Rohr has told me that although Everton’s Alex Iwobi tested positive for COVID-19 on arrival in Benin, he believes the result is “fake”.

“A second test has been taken and result due soon. Rohr tells me he’s confident Iwobi will play on Tuesday”.

''Thousands are today direct beneficiaries of your political benevolence'' - Sanwo Olu tells Tinubu as he turns 69

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on his 69th birthday.

Sanwo-Olu in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Gboyega Akosile, on Sunday described Tinubu as a visionary leader and a rare mentor.

The governor also described Tinubu as political pathfinder, nationalist and detribalised Nigerian who had contributed in no small measure to the socio-political and economic growth of Lagos State and Nigeria.

“He is a major stabilising factor for Nigeria’s current democratic dispensation; he left with impeccable records in Lagos State after setting the right template for economic growth and political stability.

“As pathfinder, Asiwaju charted the developmental trajectory of modern Lagos, raising the bar of governance and public service in the state and indeed, Nigeria.

“A cheerful giver who cares about the welfare of the people, Asiwaju personifies tolerance and humanity.  The story of Nigeria’s democracy cannot be told without the name of the Jagaban Borgu written in gold. Thousands are today direct beneficiaries of his political benevolence,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Nigerians may start carrying weapons to churches, mosques – Christian youths warn

The Christian Association of Nigeria (Youth Wing) has raised fears over the spate of kidnapping in the country, warning that citizens may resort to carrying weapons to churches, mosques, while travelling and wherever they find themselves.

The organisation, therefore, called on the President Buhari and security agencies to sit up and act now or never.

The National Chairman of YOWICAN, Belusochukwu Enwere, raised the fears in his speech titled, ‘Kidnapped RCCG members: Nigeria on the march to Golgotha’, delivered at the just-concluded leadership retreat held in Abuja, and obtained by journalists on Sunday.

He was reacting to the kidnapping of a bus filled with Christians from the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Kaduna Province 1, who were said to be going for a prayer work in Kafanchan.

He said, “Our hearts bleeds that a bus-load of Christians from RCCG from Kaduna Province 1 going for a prayer work to Kafanchan was abducted on their way. The incident of kidnapping is a case too many and has left bitter tastes in our mouths.

“The government must rise now and take responsibility of the security challenges going on in the country. How could citizens be taken away just like that without a trace?”

Resident doctors begin nationwide strike April 1

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has directed its members to embark on nationwide strike beginning from Thursday, April 1, 2021.

The directive was contained in a communique  issued at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting attended by over 50 chapters of NARD.

The communique was signed by NARD‘s President, Dr. Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi; Secretary-General, Dr. Jerry Isogun and Publicity/Social Secretary, Dr. Dotun Osikoya.

According to the communique, the NEC unanimously agreed that NARD should proceed on a total and indefinite strike on April 1, 2021, by 8am if the government failed to meet its demand.

One one the demands, according to the doctors, was immediate payment of all salaries owed to all house officers, including March salaries (regardless of quota system) before the end of business on March 31, 2021.

They also demanded immediate payment of all salary arrears, including March salaries for members in all Federal (GIFMIS platform) and State Tertiary Health Institutions across the country, especially ASUTH, IMSUTH and UNIMEDTH.

The doctors are demanding an upward review of the current hazard allowance to 50% of consolidated basic salaries of all health workers and payment of the outstanding COVID – 19 inducement allowance, especially in State owned-tertiary Institutions.

NARD further demanded an abolishment of the exorbitant bench fees being paid by its members on outside postings in all Training Institutions across the country with immediate effect.

The resident doctors had embarked on strike during last September to demand for implementation of agreement reached with government.
