Naval Ratings attack LASTMA officials [Photos]

The Lagos State Government has again condemned the action of some Naval Ratings noted for escorting commercial vehicles, who attacked LASTMA personnel for apprehending a VOLKSWAGEN BUS with registration number LSD 73 XT.

According to eyewitnesses, the said bus obstructed the flow of traffic at Onipanu inward Fadeyi on Ikorodu Road and evaded arrest. It took the determined efforts of the LASTMA Team to track down the vehicle at Fadeyi inward Jibowu.

The source also gathered that the driver had the audacity to stop in the middle of the main carriageway to discharge passengers at Fadeyi under the cover of Naval Ratings on escort.

When the commercial vehicle was eventually apprehended by LASTMA Team for clearly contravening the Lagos State Traffic Law, the Naval Ratings alighted from the commercial bus and attacked LASTMA Personnel.

The Naval Ratings further beckoned on their colleagues who were passing by in another vehicle to join them in the physical assault of the LASTMA Personnel on statutory duties.

All efforts by the policemen attached to the LASTMA Personnel to stop the fracas proved abortive.

In the process of the attack, three (3) (Android) phones belonging to LASTMA Personel were snatched away by the Naval Ratings.

The apprehended commercial vehicle is in LASTMA custody

South Korea unveils locally made fighter jet

South Korea on Friday unveiled a prototype of its first fighter jet, a highly symbolic moment in its decades-long quest for a combat plane of its own.

The gray jet, named KF-21 Boramae, was showcased at a rollout ceremony held at the Korea Aerospace Industries headquarters in the southern city of Sacheon.

The ceremony held more than five years after South Korea, along with Indonesia, began the US$7.9 billion program to replace the Air Force’s ageing fleet of F-4 and F-5 jets in late 2015.

President Moon Jae-in said the new aircraft will become the backbone of the South Korean Air Force.

He called the rollout an “opening of a new era” in independent national defense and a “landmark” moment in the history of the aerospace industry.

“The prototype rollout is a major step in the development process as it means we are entering the phase of testing the fighter’s capabilities after actually building what we only had in drawing,” the arms procurement agency said in a release.

With a maximum payload of 7,700 kilograms, the new warplane will have 10 pods for air-to-air missiles and other weapons, capable of flying at 2,200 kph with a flying range of 2,900 km.

The first flight test is scheduled for 2022, with the entire development set to be completed by 2026.

When the development is complete, South Korea will become the 13th country to have developed its own combat plane.

The military plans to put 40 units into operation by 2028 and another 80 units by 2032.

Dubbed a 4.5-generation fighter, the KF-21 plane is not a stealth aircraft, but officials said they will continue research for a possible conversion with additional features in the future.

Friday’s event was attended by Moon and other government and military officials, as well as representatives from Indonesia, a partner for the development project, led by its Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto.

Doubts have grown over Jakarta’s commitment to the joint program after the Southeast Asian country stopped making payments for the 20 percent of the total development cost it had promised to shoulder.

But during his meetings with Moon and South Korean Defense Minister Suh Wook, the Indonesian minister agreed the fighter jet project symbolizes trust between the two countries, according to officials.

In a congratulatory video message to the event, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said he hopes the launch of the prototype “will continue to bring benefits to the two countries’ cooperative relations in the defense sector.”

Moon said, “We will be together until the development is complete and the two countries jointly tap markets of a third country with a mass production system.”

India breaks record with COVID-19 cases, deaths

India reported another record number of new COVID-19 infections on Friday with daily deaths also hitting their highest in more than five months.

The world’s second most-populous country reported 131,968 new infections and 780 deaths on Friday, the biggest daily increase since mid-October.

That took India’s overall caseload to 13.06 million the world’s third-highest after the United States and Brazil and total deaths from COVID-19 to 167,642.

India’s total number of infections inched closer to Brazil’s 13.28 million.

With several states having expanded curbs to control the rapid spread of the virus, migrant workers have started packing into trains towards their villages from major cities such as Mumbai, potentially risking a wider outbreak in smaller towns.

The government blames the resurgence mainly on crowding and a reluctance to wear masks as businesses gradually reopened since the middle of last year.

“We all know that it’s because of the casual approach that has been adopted unfortunately by the society and some sort of laxity everywhere in following the discipline of the COVID- appropriate behaviour,” Health Minister Harsh Vardhan told a news conference.

He said there was no shortage of shots for the groups eligible for vaccination, with more than 43 million doses in stock or in the pipeline.

India has been inoculating about 4 million people a day.

The surge in cases has been far sharper than last year, triggering widespread calls for the vaccination of younger people.

But Prime Minister Narendra Modi has rejected the idea, citing the need to prioritise the more vulnerable, elderly population.

Nike settles Lawsuit with company behind Lil Nas X ‘Satan Shoe’

Nike and the company behind rapper Lil Nas X’s “Satan Shoes” reached a settlement  onThursday for a voluntary recall, ending the high-profile legal battle over the controversial sneakers.

As part of the settlement, Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF will “initiate a voluntary recall to buy back any Satan Shoes and Jesus Shoes for their original retail prices, in order to remove them from circulation,” Nike said.

Nike sued MSCHF last month for trademark infringement after MCSHF released a limited run of modified Nike Air Max 97s, which sold out in less than a minute and featured a pentagram pendant, a drop of human blood in the sole of the shoe, and “Luke 10:18” written on the midsole, a reference to the Bible verse where Satan falls from Heaven.

Satan Shoes are customized versions of the Nike Air Max 97 sneakers, with midsoles purporting to contain a drop of human blood, and printed with “Luke 10:18,” a reference to a Biblical verse that alludes to Satan’s fall from heaven.

Only 666 pairs were made, with the last held back so Lil Nas X, known for the song “Old Town Road,” could choose the recipient.

David Bernstein, who chairs the intellectual property litigation group at Debevoise & Plimpton and represents MSCHF, said the artistic messages MSCHF hoped the shoes would convey were “dramatically amplified” by Nike’s lawsuit.

“MSCHF intended to comment on the absurdity of the collaboration culture practiced by some brands, and about the perniciousness of intolerance,” he said. “Having achieved its artistic purpose, MSCHF is pleased to have resolved the lawsuit.”

Lil Nas X was not a defendant and never got to choose who received the last pair after a Brooklyn judge temporarily halted further sales on April 1.

Nike had claimed that even “sneakerheads” were confused about who produced Satan Shoes, while MSCHF said the shoes were “individually-numbered works of art” and did not sow confusion.

235 people killed in road accidents during Easter holiday in South Africa

South Africa recorded 235 deaths on its roads during the Easter holiday, figures released by the Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula on Thursday showed.

“According to the preliminary figures, 189 crashes were recorded, resulting in 235 fatalities nationwide,” said the minister.

Compared with 2019, “the number of crashes has been reduced by 2.1 per cent while fatalities have been reduced by 9.6 percent. This is despite the growth in population size and the vehicle population,” he said.

“Our relative success can be attributed to early preparation with education and awareness campaigns in communities, increased visibility of law enforcement officers, stakeholder involvement and a high-profile media campaign,” he added.

Mbalula cited several factors as contributors to the road fatalities.

“The carnage we continue to experience on our roads is influenced by a number of factors mostly embedded in human behavior, vehicle factors and environment on road factors,” he said.

Mbalula said it was disturbing that 35 per cent of road victims were pedestrians.

Walking while drunk, crossing in freeways and jaywalking played a role in the killing of pedestrians.

DMX still on life support amid death rumours on Twitter

DMX, an American hip-hop star, whose real name is Earl Simmons, is not dead and still on life support.

This was confirmed by his manager, Steve Rifkind, after social media posts paying tribute to the 50year-old rapper began to swirl today amid confusion over whether he had died.

The confusion came from a friend of DMX, comedian Luenell, who had posted to her Instagram stories that her friend was “gone” as he remains in a critical condition in a New York hospital.

However, by the time she realized the damage she did, Luenell quickly returned to social media to clarify her post.

“When your spirit leaves and your organs fail you. The body becomes just a shell. One becomes wrapped in the lord’s arms. That’s what ‘I’ call gone. I’m sorry to all,” Lunell stated.

In fact, a number of stars who had paid tribute to the rapper believing he had passed away, including hip hop artists Amine, Lil Nas X, as well as wrestler Thea Trinidad had to delete their tweets after the clarification.

DMX Manager, Steve Rifkind also took to Instagram with a video message to urge fans to stop posting “RIP” messages for the sake of the DMX family.

According to the website TMZ, his family are facing the difficult decision of whether to turn off his life support after tests showed no improvement in brain activity.

DMX suffered a heart attack reportedly triggered by a drug overdose at around 11 pm last Friday and now in critical condition in White Plains Hospital.

Beijing overtakes New York as billionaire capital of the world for first time

Beijing now has more billionaires than any other city in the world, narrowly beating New York which held the ranking for the last seven years.

The Chinese capital added 33 billionaires last year, taking its total to 100, as the country bounced back quickly from the Covid-19 pandemic that originated in Wuhan, according to the 2021 Forbes World’s Billionaires list. New York is home to 99 billionaires.

In NYC, Michael Bloomberg, worth $59bn (£42bn), is the wealthiest individual.

The US also still has more billionaires than any other country, with 724, but China is closing the gap with 698 (including 71 from Hong Kong and 1 from Macao), according to Forbes.

'I want to get married and get it right once and for all’ – Rita Dominic reveals

Nigerian actress, Rita Dominic has indicated that she wants to get married soon.

The screen goddess made this known in a recent interview where she explained why she will not rush into the marriage.

In an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, she said;

“I respect the institution of marriage as my parents were married till they died, and they had a beautiful relationship. The problem is at some point, it begins to annoy you because of how much importance people have placed on it. I do want to marry, and I want to get it right once and for all.

You know, we make such a big deal of it; we force people and put pressure on them to go in. When they eventually rush into this union, they make mistakes because they were only trying to please people.”

She also opened up about the possibility of becoming a mother for the first time despite being in her mid-40s.

She said;

“I don’t know. I think I just really think differently from a lot of people. I don’t know. What I mean by that is there are certain things I don’t let get to me.

I see life differently. For me I may not have birthed them but I have children that I take care of. I have people that I take care of. You understand what I mean? So you know. And obviously I would love to have my own children. However, I have children. Let me just put it that way.”

How I escaped death in plane crash – Governor Ganduje

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje on Thursday, narrated how he escaped death in the plane crash that claimed the life of the former Military administrator of the state, late Col. Abdullahi Wase, and some other state government officials.

The governor narrated his experience when he received the newly appointed Nigerian Ambassador to Romania, Barr. Safiya Nuhu, a Kano indigene, whose father also died in the plane crash.

According to Ganduje, “myself, as the then Commissioner of works, housing and transport, was to visit the Wase Juma’at Mosque which was under construction.

“And I was the Coordinator for the appeal fund to build that mosque. The governor was to travel to inspect the project and also pay a condolence visit over a relation that died. So, I coordinated the journey.

“I secured the aircraft that was used for that journey, the aircraft was owned by Alhaji Aminu Dantata. I was the one who wrote all the names of those that were to travel with the administrator.

“And your father was not among, as I was going out from the government house, the late Wase was climbing the stairs through the family wing and your dad came to me asking why his name was not there.

“Then the late Wase after climbing one step, stopped and asked your dad: “you are Permanent Secretary Government house, when there is communication from the villa, who will receive that communication?” It is just like a chief of staff.

“Then late Wase asked what was happening, I then told him that the DG was insisting that he wants to follow us, he then said he should be included, then I included him.” Ganduje told Nuhu.

He added that two of them, in their separate vehicles, drove home because they were staying along the same route in Sharada, and her dad waved and said good night to him and he responded.

According to him, “But on reaching my house, I called my permanent Secretary and told him that we were scheduled to be in Wase through Jos, so I will not be in the office.

“He said that there was an important message. The memo you were asked by the governor to write to the Head of state, they sent the money requested for the rehabilitation of metropolitan roads.

“And probably the president will send some people to come and see what is going on. I said if that is the case, I am not traveling again.

“I then asked him to invite the technical people so that we will meet in my office by 8am, to prepare the necessary memo and when the governor comes back, I will take the memo to him for approval so that we can swing into action.”

Ganduje explained that after that interaction with his permanent Secretary, he decided not to travel with the governor to Wase.

He said that in the morning the technical people came, and that as they were holding a meeting, “then I was told that I was being requested to be at the government house, and I asked who would ask me to be at the Government house when the administrator was not around.

“The messenger said that it was a message, then I left for the government house and went to the council chamber where we were holding our meetings, that was 1996, about 25 years ago.

“Immediately I entered, I saw the brigade commander, who had taken over immediately and some commissioners were crying, then I asked if it was not an air crash. How can commissioners be crying in government house?” I asked.

Ganduje quoted the brigade commander, “well, my colleagues, the administrator left here in the morning, there was a crash in Jos, and no survivors. I am giving you one hour, to go and get ready so that we go to Jos and sort out the dead bodies.

“That was the end of it. Your father was my friend, since secondary school, to the university, and we later started working at the Gumel Advance Teacher’s College”

No one can question First Lady’s role again, Tinubu says

A national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Thursday said the concerns by some individuals that the constitution did not recognise the role of First Lady had been “forever laid to rest” by the performance of the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari.

Tinubu said this in his remarks at the public presentation of Aisha’s biography, “Aisha Buhari: Being different,” written by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Administration and Women Affairs, Dr Hajo Sani.

The APC leader, who is the chairman of the occasion, said, “Given the First Lady’s achievements, no one can reasonably question the role of a First Lady any longer.

“Remember there were those who argued that the constitution does not assign an official role to the First Lady.

“Because of Dr. Mrs. Aisha Buhari, their concerns have been forever laid to rest.

“The First Lady has played an uplifting, unifying role both in symbol and substance.

“She has been a voice of conscience calling us to be our better selves for the good of the nation and for the betterment of the weakest, most vulnerable among us.

“As such, she has been a strong pillar of support not only to the President but also to the Nigerian people whom they both serve with such patriotic commitment and high purpose.”

Tinubu said role of the First Lady was instrumental to the society and to how a great number of people relate to government.
