Drug trafficker EXCRETES 113 wraps of cocaine worth N423m

A suspected drug trafficker, Okonkwo Chimezie Henry, has excreted 113 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.750 kg with a street value of N423 million.

This followed his arrest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos on Easter Day, Sunday, 4th April, 2021, where he was headed for Madrid, Spain.

Director, Media and Advocacy, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja yesterday.

The statement reads, “Okonkwo was about boarding a Turkish Airline flight number TK0626 at about 8pm when he was apprehended at screening 2 point and taken into custody by the NDLEA operatives at the Lagos airport. He was subsequently put under observation at the JBTF/NDLEA facility for further investigation.

“Twenty four hours after putting him under excretion observation, the suspect, who has been living in Spain for 10 years, excreted 39 wraps of cocaine and subsequently passed out a total of 113 wraps in five excretions. Further investigation reveals he ingested the illicit drug in a hotel in the Igando area of Lagos.”

The statement quoted the Commander, MMIA Command of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Garba, as saying, “the suspect excreted 39 wraps weighing 600 grammes at 9.58am on April 5; 13 wraps weighing 200 grammes at 6.30pm same day; 16 wraps weighing 250 grammes at 10.30pm same day; and 32 wraps weighing 500 grammes at 7.30am on April 6.”

Babafemi said operatives at the airport also intercepted a 2.8kg of skunk meant for Dubai in UAE through Emirate Airline.

“The illicit drug was concealed in crayfish, bitter leaves and melons packaged in a sack but was recovered at the SAHCO export shed of the MMIA, he said.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), in his reaction commended officers and men of the MMIA Command for not allowing criminal elements take advantage of the Easter holiday to further their illicit trade, and dent Nigeria’s image abroad.

Kogi Poly student, Mohammed Shehu, caught with gun, ammunition on campus

Attempt by Shehu Mohammed, a Public Administration student of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, to smuggle a locally made gun and five rounds of ammunition into campus was foiled by security personnel of the institution on Friday.

Vigilant security personnel of the Polytechnic were surprised during a routine check that instead of writing materials, the student came to the school with a gun.

On discovery of his strange ‘wares’ Mohammed had attempted to run away but the security personnel were able to stop him.

He was purportedly on the campus purportedly to write his ND II final examination before he was stopped by the ‘stop and search’ officer and was asked to hand over his belongings.

He has since been handed over to the appropriate law enforcement agency for further interrogation and investigation.

It was believed that the student was a cultist and may be planning to use the gun during the usually deadly end-of-examination celebrations by his colleagues.

Kogi Poly Rector, Dr. S.O Usman had announced a ban of such celebrations few days ago.

Usman said the ban was based on intelligence report that some suspected cultists would be coming to the campus with ammunition to avenge their colleague who was killed after the end of examination celebration of 2019.

Veteran actors suffer depression when forgotten –Foluke Daramola-Salako

Actress and movie producer, Foluke Daramola-Salako, has said that many veteran actors suffer depression because of neglect.

Daramola-Salako, who recently celebrated the birthdays of some actors including 97-year-old Charles Olumo, aka Baba Agbako, and Tajudeen Oyewole, aka Abija, maintained that she was not being bankrolled by anyone.

She told Saturday Beats, “My main purpose is to attract publicity for elderly actors. I decided to celebrate their birthdays pending when I have my major event.

I have always said that a lot of these aged actors are facing depression. Some don’t die just because they are old but being once active and suddenly not being active anymore could be a painful experience for them.

Sometimes, it is not about the money that I or any other person gives them. It is a matter of showcasing them, so that their talent is still appreciated. I can tell you as a movie director that there is a place for these aged veterans in the movies we make.

“Some people think that someone is sponsoring me but I am stressing that no philanthropist is sponsoring me. Everything I am spending is from my pocket. If anyone decides to sponsor me, I would announce it and appreciate the person.

I have been true to this course because it is a project I love. In fact, the reason I opened a restaurant and bar is that I might run out of funds to host these veterans at event centres and I would gladly use my space. Any politician or anyone that has bankrolled me over these projects is free to speak out.”

When asked why she did not enlist the support of other colleagues, the actress said, “I left the ‘Nolly veteran SOS Project 2019’, an offshoot of Passion Against Rape and Abuse in Africa Foundation open to a lot of people so that we could all help.

But, the truth is that our goals are not the same. My husband believes in me so he has continued to help me in that path. I believe that a nation without heroes is a nation without history.

We don’t have many icons that we look up to now. The ones alive are meant to be celebrated and we should all look out for them. These veterans are giving up and dying in penury.

Growing up, I held these people in high esteem because their works and skills were worthy of emulation. I should also state that some actors personally reach out to some veterans. They support them from time to time without going public about it.”

I won’t pay ransom even if my son is kidnapped - El-Rufai

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has said he will never pay ransom to bandits even if they kidnap his son.

The governor said this in a radio chat on Friday in Kaduna to underscore his government’s policy of not negotiating with bandits.

Mr El-Rufai has consistently said government should only apply force in dealing with bandits and other violent criminals, reiterating the stand on Thursday by stressing that bandits do not deserve to live.

In his current remarks on Friday, Mr El-Rufai said he had warned his family members to be careful to avoid being abducted. He said he also told them he would never pay a ransom for their freedom, should any of them get into the hands of bandits.

“I mean it and I will say it again here. Even if my son is kidnapped, I will rather pray for him to make heaven instead, because I won’t pay any ransom.”

Asked what his government was doing to secure the release of the students kidnapped at the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Kaduna, in March, the governor said the government would keep exploring other ways to get them back to their families but stressed that the government is “absolutely not paying ransom.”

He said the state government will keep exploring those other means until the students are released.

Mr El-Rufai has been under pressure from the parents of the students, other concerned persons and groups to negotiate with the bandits for the release of the students.

The state governments of Katsina, Niger and Zamfara were believed to have negotiated with the abductors for the release of hundreds of students kidnapped from schools in the states.
