Hoodlums take over LASU axis, attack, rob students at will

The Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos, axis particularly areas along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway close to the Iyana-Iba market the Okokomaiko (PPL) area, and the university’s gate on the LASU-Igando road, are now a hotbed of violent crimes.

Clutching dangerous weapons such as guns and knives, hoodlums prey on unwitting passers-by in these areas many of whom are students of the university, robbing them of money, belongings, and in some cases, inflicting bodily harm on them.

An entrepreneur and 300-level student of Biology Education, Rukayat Balogun, suffered brutality at the hands of the criminal elements.

On June 24, 2019, Rukayat left her hostel at Idirogbo for CMS at about 5:30am to beat the rush hour. She planned to buy some goods for her customers being a retailer of male and female underwear.

She was with her smartphone and N70,000. As she trotted phone-in-hand along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, opposite the university road, she felt a sharp pang on her left hand which she later found suffered a deep cut. Her attacker held an “iron object” to scare her.

Rukayat said her assailant tried to drag the smartphone from her wounded hand but he wasn’t successful, adding that at that point she screamed for attention, forcing the robber to flee

It was gathered that a motorcyclist offered to take Rukayat to a hospital, but she didn’t get help from the first three hospitals they visited.

Punch correspondent learnt that Rukayat was eventually treated at a medical centre located at 15, Olowo Tabutabu Street, Agric, Ojo.

Rukayat said a few days later she was accompanied by members of the school’s student union to make a statement at the Ojo Police Station. She appealed to the government to curb criminality in the areas.

Another 200-level student from the Faculty of Arts, Joyce (not real name), had a different encounter which left her worried for the few seconds she was stopped by a stranger. On a certain Sunday last year before the lockdown, she and two of her friends were walking down to Iyana-Iba market to buy some groceries when a strange man accosted them.

Joyce said the man accused her of flaunting the colour of his confraternity, saying “You think say we wan toast you, I just wan tell you say na our colour you dey fly.” Joyce told Sunday Punch that her shirt was in fact multi-coloured. “I wore light blue mixed with grey and white that day,” she said.

Joyce added that as two other young men approached them they ran away shouting. Luckily, they escaped unmolested. Joyce said she’s avoided visiting Iyana-Iba market during evenings since the incident.

Besides, a 200-level student of the Department of Physics, Identified only as Ayomide was not so lucky as he left school last week to spend the Easter with his parents at Agbowa.

On Good Friday, Ayomide said he left his hostel by 6am so he could beat traffic. He added that as he trekked past the university’s walls along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, four cutlass-wielding men emerged from the overgrown bush by the roadside.

The assailants inflicted machete cuts on Ayomide, leaving him with a wounded head and bodily harm.

Ayomide managed to escape, scrambling towards the school’s gate wearing a cloak of his own blood. He explained his encounter with the deadly louts to the Marshalls (LASU’s security outfit) he found at the school’s gate.

But despite the pleas by the bystanders, the Marshalls refused to accost the robbers whom Ayomide believed still loitered at the crime scene.

According to Ayomide, his attackers robbed him of his two phones—an iPhone XR bought in March, 2021, for N175, 000, and Huawei Y6 (2019). Ayomide added that the hoodlums took away his new clothes worth N50, 000.

Ayomide received treatment later that morning at the university’s clinic. He stated that he had been depressed and experienced nightmares about the incident since Friday.

The Cassidy hostel, Okokomaiko accomodating a 300-level student from the Faculty of Arts, Abdulazeez Oladele, was burgled when he was a freshman, losing his phone and laptop. In 200 level, last year, as he returned to hostel from lectures on a Thursday evening, he and his roommates were attacked around a new generation bank branch at Cassidy, which is near the university.

His roommates managed to escape but he wasn’t lucky. The hoodlums took away his phone and bag.

Abdulazeez didn’t report the incident. He insisted that “the school isn’t doing enough,” adding that, “students are even being robbed at PPL which is close to school, and even at Aiyepe Gate.”

He urged the university authorities to work with the state government to ensure enough hostels on campus and to increase police presence around student-populated areas.

I want to create next line of generational DJs — DJ Kaywise

With over five years of nurturing, teaching and creating platforms for aspiring DJs in Nigeria, founder of Kaywise Academy, Ayorinde Okiki, popularly known as DJ Kaywise has said the success recorded by the academy over the years has reassured him that with proper structure, Nigerian entertainers will succeed.

Worried about the continued lack of structure that keeps hindering the growth of aspiring music DJs, DJ Kaywise said in a chat with Potpourri that he floated his academy to groom young minds whose interest lies in disc jockeying, adding that he has always been passionate about creating conducive environment of learning for his students.

With over five branches in Nigeria, Kaywise hinted that the academy has graduated over 600 students, who according to him, have become successful DJs across different parts of Africa and impacting lives of others positively.

According to him, “I grew up in an environment where there was and still no proper structure that would guarantee success of stakeholders in the industry and I was moved to contribute my part to correcting the problem, hence the birth of Kaywise Academy.”

“My mission is to create the next line of generational DJs that would show the world that Nigeria has what it takes to be one of the best when it comes to music and sounds.

We can’t continue to wait on those who will not help our situation, so my academy was floated to contribute my quota and give hope and voice to the people,” he said.

KSolo tackles Seyi Shay over ‘harsh’ comments on Nigerian Idol

Music producer, Solomon Oyeniyi, aka KSolo, has lambasted singer, Seyi Shay, for harsh comments to a young singer at this year’s audition of the television reality show, Nigerian Idol.

Seyi Shay had told the singer, “Somebody lied to you and told you to come and audition, and that person, you should go back and tell them they’re not your friends because that was not good audition.

“Oh, you have a good talking voice, and it comes out in your singing voice, but your performance, terrible. You’re never going to make money being a singer.”

Her comments had sparked various diverse reactions on social media.

In an interview with Sunday Scoop, KSolo was of the view that Seyi Shay’s career and attitude to music needed evaluation.

“Imagine someone that her music needs evaluation evaluating another person. She is still a work in progress herself. The hypocrisy in the industry is so bad. There are people who have made ‘legends’, yet they are not on that seat. It is a slap on the music industry’s face. What she said was so bad.

“If an artiste like Small Doctor goes for the Nigerian Idol audition, I am sure he would not be chosen. There are a lot of things attached to music beyond the voice. The craft is also important. Some people can sing in a vocal booth, but when you put them on a stage, they cannot sing. What criteria do the judges even use to select?”

The talented beat maker also maintained that there was a lot of hypocrisy in the music industry. He added, “There is a lot of deceitfulness and hypocrisy in the music industry. Few of us that stand our ground are being given names. To get yourself to the limelight is easy when you have money.

However, when you get there, it’s time for you to rebrand and fix yourself and your craft. But, a lot of people are not doing it. Because of the money on the table, the deceitfulness is so loud.”

Ogun cobbler electrocuted while reconnecting neighbours’ electricity

The dreams of Hammed Omotosho, a secondary school leaver in Agbado, Ogun State, sadly ended after he was electrocuted while fixing the electricity of a building disconnected in the neighbourhood.

The 24-year-old, who was a cobbler and a member of Man O’ War, was reportedly about to accomplish his ambition of enlisting in the Nigerian Army when the tragedy struck.

Punch correspondent learnt that some residents of a house on Ishola Street, Abosule, Agbado Crossing, engaged Omotosho penultimate on Saturday night to reconnect their power supply allegedly disconnected by workers of the electricity distribution company serving the area.

It was gathered that there was an outage at the time Hammed climbed the pole but while he was in the middle of the task, power was restored.

He was said to have got a shock from a naked wire, fell off balance, crashed onto the ground and died on the spot.

A source in the community told punch correspondent that the residents fled in the ensuing panic, adding that the incident was reported to the Agbado Police Division.

The source said, “He (Omotosho) was a cobbler and member of Man O’ War. He was diligent and talented. He assisted people to fix electrical problems in their homes in exchange for a token. The house he went to that Saturday night of March 27 was disconnected and the residents wanted to reconnect the electricity.

“There was no electricity before he started the connection. But while he was at it, power was restored around 11am. He was electrocuted. Those who invited him fled home for fear of being attacked. Policemen from Agbado division came to remove his corpse.”

The deceased’s father, Sikiru, a bricklayer, described him as a kind-hearted son, lamenting that his death was a huge loss to the family.

Bird Flu: FG destroys over 329,000 chickens in 62 farms

The federal government has destroyed over 329,000 birds across 62 farms following the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) which has continued to wreak havoc on farms across the country since the first reported case on January 29.

From January to 5th April, 421,947 birds were exposed to the H5N1 disease while 92,422 birds have died of the disease, which now spreads to 20 local government areas across eight states

Reliable information from the ministry indicated that as of 9th April, the ministry has depopulated about 329,556 birds across the 62 farms.

Dr. Adeniran Alabi, the Chief Veterinary Officer of the Federations and Director of Veterinary and Pest Control Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said for two years, the country didn’t record any outbreak until on January 29 when it confirmed the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

According to Dr. Alabi, the major control measures and policy in the country remain detection, depopulation, decontamination, and compensation.

“We encourage other farmers to put in place the strictest bio-security measures that can prevent the spread of the disease from coming into their farms.

He said the ministry has been carrying out disinfection in live bird markets in the affected states, which have been a major risk factor for the spread of the disease based on their previous epidemiological investigations.

“Based on the recent epidemiological studies we conducted, we discovered that there are certain species of birds that are responsible for sustaining the disease in the environment and they are the wild birds and the ducks.

“They have the virus but don’t show the clinical disease and when you go to the live birds’ markets, you see a lot of mix-up between the wild birds, ducks, and poultry. We have encouraged the states to separate the ducks and wild birds markets from poultry,” he said.

For the current outbreak, he said the ministry was working with NCDC as one health team to take blood samples from human exposure in the farms while veterinarians took samples of the birds for analysis and further action.

Sultan commends inter-religious harmony in Kogi state

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Saturday commended the inter-religious harmony in Kogi.

The Sultan gave the commendation when he inaugurated a 1,800 seat capacity Anyigba Central Mosque built by former Governor of Kogi and Industrialist, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris.

The ultramodern Anyigba Mosque in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi has an auditorium, offices, 30 male and 50 female toilets.

It also has a school and was built on a 1.3 hectare of land.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Sultan and Head of the Islamic Supreme Council urged well-to-do individuals to see building Mosques as a way of molding spiritual characters of upcoming generations.

He said that the building of Mosques also helped to boost the faith of adherents and urged Muslims to use the forthcoming Ramadan to pray for strength and enduring peace in the country.

The Sultan commended the initiative of the facilitator of the mosque, saying that it attested to the fact that the edifice must have been conceived over time and not an idea that began now.

He described the overwhelming presence of Christian Clergymen at the inauguration of the Mosque as unprecedented.

The Sultan said inter-religious harmony was a way of sustaining peace in the country and urged that the Kogi example where Christians and Muslims were united in worship be emulated by all Nigerians.

“I feel there is no better way of thanking him than to provide a place where others can come and worship Him,” he said.

Amidst marriage crisis, Yahaya Bello flaunts First Lady, Rashida [photos]

Governor Yahaya Bello and his wife, Rashida were some of the prominent faces at the official public presentation of a book about the First Lady, Aisha Buhari on Thursday.

However, though photographs of the Kogi governor speaking with the National Leader of All Progressives Congress, APC who was the chairman of the event trended on the social media,  Bello was not pictured with his wife inside the Aso Rock conference centre where the book, authored by Hajo Sani, is titled ‘Aisha Buhari – Being Different’ was launched.

But the Governor’s media aide and some of his supporters have been sharing the photographs of the Governor holding his wife as they climbed the stairs of the Conference Centre during the book launch on different social media pages.

The photographs were being shared against the background of rumours that the marriage of the Governor to Rashida may be in trouble.

Recall there was a report earlier in the week that Rashida has moved out of Kogi governor’s residence over alleged affair of her with his beautiful female ADC.

But in a strongly worded statement, Kogi State Government denied the rumours while insisting that the Governor is in control of his household, just as he is in control of his government.

Onogwu Muhammed, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, who signed the statement issued on Monday said the claim was baseless.

How I masterminded abduction of three bank managers, got N15m share of ransoms – Driver

Five suspected members of a notorious kidnapping gang allegedly responsible for the recent abduction of three managers of Zenith Bank PLC in Delta State have been arrested by operatives of the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

The arrested suspects, who gang was said to have received a ransom of more than N50 million in foreign currencies, include Owes Okpaka, Lawrence Kevwe Egagah, Victor Dominic, Usobotie Sylvester and Alex Okoun.

A source said they were arrested after operatives of the IRT got information about their activities from one of their victims, Daniel Imani, the manager of the Warri Urobo College Branch of Zenith Bank, who was abducted on his way home by members of the gang on October 5, 2020 and a ransom of N15 million was eventually paid for his release.

The source further disclosed that after Imani was kidnapped and released, members of the gang went on to kidnap two other managers of the bank, identified simply as Mrs. Zowa, a manager of the Ogonu Warri branch, and one Mrs Isioma, the manager of the Effurun branch.

A total sum of N35 million was said to have been paid to the kidnappers as ransom in foreign currencies before the two victims were released.

Operatives of the IRT who swung into action after Imani’s complaint were said to have discovered that the kidnapping of the bank managers was masterminded by Okpaka, an employee of the bank.

Okpaka, a driver with the bank in Delta State, allegedly gave information about his senior colleagues, who he knew could afford huge sums as ransoms.

He was also alleged to have trailed his victims to their homes and gave out information about their movements to members of his gang.

For his efforts, he got a total sum of N15 million as his share of the ransom.

Upon his arrest, however, he made confessions that aided the arrest of four other members of the gang, including an ex-militant who had taken part in several bank robberies and vandalisation of oil pipelines.

In his confessional statement, Okpaka said: “I am a native of Ubogo community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State. I am a graduate of Oghara Polytechnic, Delta State.

“I was working at the Ogonu branch of Zenith Bank as a driver until I resigned from the job in January this year. I was arrested because I masterminded the kidnapping of three of colleagues.

“My gang members include Victor and Kevwe, but I do not know the names of the remaining ones. I was the person that brought the three kidnapping jobs involving Zenith Bank staffs.

“The first person we kidnapped was one Daniel. I was the person that monitored his movements and gave out his location to my gang members. Daniel is the Zenith Bank manager for the Urobo College Branch in Warri, and we kidnapped him sometime in October, 2020. I do not know the type of gun that was used for his kidnapping.

“He was kept in our custody for one week, but I do not know who negotiated the ransom. I also do not know how much was paid as ransom. But the ransom was paid in dollars and my own share was also given to me in dollars. When I converted it to naira, it was N2.5 million.

The second kidnapping was that of a woman called Mrs. Zowa, a staff of Zenith Bank at the Ogonu Branch, Warri. I was the one that gave out information about the woman to my gang members.

“I cannot remember the exact month that we kidnapped her, but it was Victor and I that planned the operation.

“Victor also brought two other boys for the job and we kidnapped the woman along PTI Junction, Warri.

“Victor was the one who negotiated the ransom I do not know the exact amount that was paid, but the money came in dollars. I also got the sum of N2.5 million as my own share.

“The woman was kept in our custody for one week before her ransom was paid.

Resident doctors suspend strike, give FG four-week ultimatum

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced the suspension of its strike which started on the 1st of April, 2021.

Speaking with The Nation on Saturday, the President of the NARD, Dr. Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, said that the association decided to suspend its strike after receiving some good comebacks from their negotiations with the government. It however gave the government an ultimatum of four weeks to meet its sundry demands.

He said, “The strike has been suspended. The government gave us some good comebacks from our negotiations. We had an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting an hour ago, and we decided to suspend the strike for four weeks.”

Signs that the doctors will call off their strikes first emerged yesterday when the federal government set up a committee to smoothen out the payment of resident doctors by removing the irregularities encountered in the process.

The committee is part of ongoing efforts to resolve the payment dispute between the government and National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), which led to the ongoing industrial action by the association.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, disclosed this at the end of a meeting between the representatives of the federal government and NARD which is an addendum to the Memorandum of Action reached between the parties on 31st March.

According to Ngige, the meeting agreed to set up the committee after noting that “the payment of House Officers’ salaries experienced some irregularities as double payments were made to some officers in some centres, while a few have not been paid as of date.”

Ngige said the five-man committee was given 72 hours from Saturday, 10th April to produce a valid list of names of House Officers to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), through the Federal Ministry of Health.

The committee members were drawn from the Federal Ministry of Health, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), IPPIS, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), NARD, Committee of Chief Medical Directors (CCMDs).

He hoped that with this and other understandings reached, NARD would give “this conciliation process a chance for industrial peace by calling off the strike which commenced on 1st April 2021.”

CBN explains why Nigeria CAN'T STOP BORROWING

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has insisted that Nigeria can’t stop borrowing, mainly when it’s necessary.

Mr Godwin Emefiele, the CBN Governor, disclosed this in Abuja on Friday at the National Dialogue on Nigeria’s rising debt profile, titled: “The Rising Public Debt in Nigeria and the Challenges of National Development,” organised by the Action Aid Nigeria (AAN).

Emefiele, who was represented by Dr Tawose Joseph, the Assistant Director, Monetary Policy Department, CBN, said there is no crime in borrowing.

According to him, there should be monitoring and evaluation of the money borrowed and its purpose.

This is coming as AAN and stakeholders have expressed fear over unbalanced borrowings levels, rising national debt profile and increasing poverty level under President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

He said, “Debt is part of fiscal responsibility. Debt is never a crime or a sin. The private entity also borrows to survive. What matters most is the debt’s quantum and the debt usage as well as if money is borrowed as a result of the shortage of income generation.

“When you compare the income and expenditure, and it is efficiently used, it is part of government responsibility. But where the fear is when it is above the threshold.

“CBN understands that when there is a crisis in an economy, then the burden of debt would be something. That is why the conventional and non-conventional instruments are there to ensure price stability in the economy.”

When asked by Sizwe what life looked like for him after 35, Nasty C, who is 24 years old, said he had it all figured out already.

“I can’t tell you but I have it all figured out. I am going to go to this place that I love, it’s so left, nobody would actually just move there or even retire there, but I am going to retire there,” he said.

He went on to say that once he made $1bn, he would stop making music.

“I am open about it, a billion, I want to say dollars. God forbid it doesn’t happen.

“At 35 I drop all this sh** and I start focusing on something else. So if I am not a billionaire at 35, hopefully, I am in a 100s, in dollars.

The “Black & White” hitmaker also spoke about how he no longer feels the need to prove that he can rap and explained the effect that has had on his approach to music.

“I got over that whole ‘who killed who’ on a song thing like a long time ago … when I was still rapping to prove that I can rap … when it was just about that.

“My approach to music is very different now, so I don’t mind you saying so and so killed me on a song or whatever,” Nasty C said, adding that he’s “all about making people feel things” when he makes music.

The rapper went on to give himself a 7.5 out of 10 for his career so far.

“I feel like I could have done better,” he said. “I came in thinking things were sweet, it’s all kumbaya. I thought there was going to be good energy in the game, it wasn’t. So that makes up for the 2.5 that’s missing”.

He added that if he had just avoided certain people, he would not have needed to go through what he did.
