Ritualist kills food vendor, severs hands, head in Osun

The Police Command in Osun says a suspected ritualist has killed and cut off the head and hands of a female food vendor in Ile-Ife on Saturday.

The Command Spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, who said this in a statement on Sunday, said that the police were on the trail of the assailant.

Opalola explained that the woman, known as Iya Elekuru, was lured into a building by her killer, under the pretence that he wanted to buy food from her.

“The woman hawking food was lured inside a house and was brutally murdered.

“The suspect chopped off her head and hand, and he fled the scene with the mutilated body parts. Our men have, however, evacuated the body of the woman.

“The son of the victim has also claimed the corpse and buried her according to Islamic rites.

“Irate youths have, however, razed the building where the woman was killed and police efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect,” she said

It was gathered that a herbalist (suspected to be the culprit) was the one living in the room/house where the woman’s body was discovered.

‘God not happy with Buhari govt’ – Nigerian pastor carries coffin in protest [Photos]

The General Overseer of Resurrection Praise Ministry, Archbishop Samson Benjamin protested against the Buhari administration on Sunday in Lagos.

Benjamin, popularly known as Jehovah Sharp Sharp, carried a coffin as he marched through the streets of Festac.

The Bishop claimed God asked him to do so because He wasn’t happy with the government and the state of the nation.

The cleric explained that his action was the outcome of “a spiritual journey of more than one year”.

“From the 15th of September 2019 up until this moment, I have not eaten food cooked by fire or any pleasant food, I have been seeking the face of God over this great country.

“Last week, I had a mortal vacation, which was a solitary confinement where I didn’t talk to any human to be with the cabinet of the trinity, I didn’t see the sun, moon, clouds.’

“What you are seeing me do here right now is what the Prophets of Old would do. God will ask them to carry a symbol when he wants to pass a message to the leaders of the nation.

“He said to me ‘Go and carry a coffin on your head, it is not furniture or anything for interior decoration, it is good for nothing, it is at the end of the life of a man that he is put into a coffin.”

Benjamin quoted the message he heard: “Tell the leaders that they have intentionally depleted the common resources that belong to this great country and have brought hardship on the citizens, I am not happy with it.”

The Archbishop urged Nigerians to tell the leaders the truth. He described Nigeria as a disappointment to the Lord God almighty “who brought people of various ethnicities together and gave them the resources”

“But those in power have chosen to make the commonwealth of the country their personal property, this is the reason I am carrying this coffin, God is not happy, and he is saying it is not political leaders alone, including the religious and traditional leaders.”

On why he didn’t take it to the Aso Villa, the seat of power in Abuja, Benjamin said God had not asked him to do that yet.

“Human rights is the right of citizens of this country, we have found ourselves in a government that sees you as an enemy when you are being constructive in your criticism.”

The clergyman stressed that the way forward for Nigeria is that those in power need to sit and decide if the country should stay together or not.

“Secession cry is everywhere, the question is, Is it God’s will that all these must happen? We need to sit down at a round table and look at it again what and what put us together, whether those things are still workable today or are no longer workable”, Benjamin said.

The 10 grant-aided missionary schools involved in the controversy were shut down by the state government on Feb. 19 for safety reasons.

The statement however mentioned a ‘monitoring team, to ensure “compliance”.

”This is to inform parents/guardians and teachers that the 2020/2021 Third Term Academic Session for the 10 schools affected in the recent hijab debate starts on Monday, April 12.

”This is part of the government’s efforts to bring the students in these schools up to speed in whatever they may have missed when their schools were shut.

”This is especially necessary for students preparing for external examinations.

”The resumption date for other schools not affected by the brief closure of schools is Monday 26th, 2021, as had earlier been communicated,” Adeosun said.

According to the permanent secretary, all the teachers and staff of the affected schools should resume duty and commence classes immediately.

She, however, noted that the Monitoring and Inspection team of the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development would be going round to ascertain compliance.

The affected schools are C&S College Sabo-Oke, St. Anthony’s Secondary school, Offa Road, ECWA School, Oja Iya, Surulere Baptist Secondary School and Bishop Smith Secondary School, Agba Dam.

Man United win 3-1 to dent Tottenham's top four hopes

Manchester United avenged being hit for six by Tottenham earlier in the season by dealing a body blow to Spurs’ hopes of a top-four Premier League finish with a 3-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

United came from behind to win for the ninth time in the league this season as second-half goals from Fred, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood cancelled out Son Heung-min’s opener.

Victory kept alive United’s slim title hopes by cutting the gap on local rivals Manchester City to 11 points with a game in hand for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to come.

Even if they do not manage to reel in City in their final seven games of the campaign, United opened up a nine-point cushion over fifth-placed Chelsea in the battle for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Tottenham’s hopes of a return to Europe’s premier club competition are dwindling fast as they are now six points adrift of West Ham in fourth and could slip to eighth if Everton win at Brighton on Monday.

“Same coach, different players,” was Jose Mourinho’s explanation when quizzed last weekend why his side perpetually blow leads compared to the ruthless teams he has managed in the past.

Tottenham have now lost 18 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season.

The last time they came from behind to win in the league was when they thrashed United 6-1 at Old Trafford in October.

By contrast, United have picked up 28 points after falling behind, although they only did so this time after controversially having a goal ruled out.

Paul Pogba and Cavani combined brilliantly for the Uruguayan to drill the ball low between the legs of Hugo Lloris.

However, the goal was ruled out after a VAR review by referee Chris Kavanagh for a foul by Scott McTominay on Son in the build-up.

The Scottish international made minimal contact with Son’s face as he swotted the South Korean aside.

Tottenham’s claims for a double punishment were ignored by Kavanagh, though, as McTominay escaped without being shown a second yellow card.

United’s fury was compounded four minutes later when Son had bounced back up to give Tottenham the lead.

Harry Kane freed Lucas Moura in on goal and the Brazilian unselfishly squared for Son to slot home his first Premier League goal in over two months.

However, Solskjaer’s men fuelled their anger to produce another second-half fightback.

Lloris had to be down sharply to his left to parry a warning shot from McTominay.

United deservedly got their equaliser on 57 minutes. A fine team move saw Fred feed Cavani and after Lloris saved his initial effort, the Brazilian fired into the roof of the net for just his fourth goal in three seasons since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Dean Henderson justified the faith Solskjaer has shown in promoting him ahead of David de Gea with smart saves with his feet to prevent Son and Kane restoring Tottenham’s lead.

At the other end, Lloris also produced a brilliant stop from Bruno Fernandes’s dipping strike from outside the box.

Lloris was powerless 11 minutes from time, though, when substitute Greenwood whipped in an inviting cross for Cavani to power into the bottom corner.

Greenwood then continued his return to form by smashing past Lloris at his near post in stoppage time.

Convicted Genesis prophet returns to church

There was jubilation on Sunday when the Senior Shepherd-in-Charge of the Celestial Church of Christ, Genesis Global, Prophet Israel Ogundipe, who was granted post-conviction bail, returned to the church.

Members burst into shouts and songs of appreciation when he entered the church premises.

In a video posted on Instagram by the church, the convicted pastor was seen leading praise and worship.

The Nation had reported the Court of Appeal in Lagos granted Ogundipe a post-conviction bail.

A three-man panel on April 1 granted Ogundipe bail on the ground of health conditions.

Justice Olabisi Akinlade had on November 18 sentenced the popular prophet to one-year imprisonment for converting a woman’s property to his personal use and stealing.

The court had found Ogundipe guilty of stealing and unlawful conversion of the property of a London-based architect, Mrs. Oladele Williams-Oni.

Ogundipe, who was arraigned on seven counts bordering on obtaining by stealing, inducing delivery of money by false pretences, unlawful conversion of property and forgery, fraudulently collected N14m and £12,000 in various tranches from the complainant between August 30, 2002 and 2005.

Justice Akinlade, who found Ogundipe guilty on two counts count of stealing and unlawful conversion of property not delivered, sentenced him to one-year imprisonment on each count and ordered that he should pay the complainant the sum of N11m, which he obtained from her illegally.

Dissatisfied with the judgement, Ogundipe, through his counsel, Babatunde Ogala (SAN), approached the appeal court for bail pending the hearing of the appeal and an application to quash the conviction.

Ogala argued the televangelist was diabetic, could no longer follow a strict diet and the constant specialised medical attention in custody, which had taken a toll on his health made him “gaunt in appearance.”

Delivering the ruling, Justice Abudullhai Bayero said: “There are criteria for granting a convict bail. These include that the applicant must be a first-time offender or have a serious health condition.

“The applicant seeking bail pending appeal before the court is a first-time offender and he has also shown to the court that he is having hypertension, peptic ulcer, unending malaria, and diabetes, which are serious health conditions.”

Hoodlums take over LASU axis, attack, rob students at will

The Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos, axis particularly areas along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway close to the Iyana-Iba market the Okokomaiko (PPL) area, and the university’s gate on the LASU-Igando road, are now a hotbed of violent crimes.

Clutching dangerous weapons such as guns and knives, hoodlums prey on unwitting passers-by in these areas many of whom are students of the university, robbing them of money, belongings, and in some cases, inflicting bodily harm on them.

An entrepreneur and 300-level student of Biology Education, Rukayat Balogun, suffered brutality at the hands of the criminal elements.

On June 24, 2019, Rukayat left her hostel at Idirogbo for CMS at about 5:30am to beat the rush hour. She planned to buy some goods for her customers being a retailer of male and female underwear.

She was with her smartphone and N70,000. As she trotted phone-in-hand along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, opposite the university road, she felt a sharp pang on her left hand which she later found suffered a deep cut. Her attacker held an “iron object” to scare her.

Rukayat said her assailant tried to drag the smartphone from her wounded hand but he wasn’t successful, adding that at that point she screamed for attention, forcing the robber to flee

It was gathered that a motorcyclist offered to take Rukayat to a hospital, but she didn’t get help from the first three hospitals they visited.

Punch correspondent learnt that Rukayat was eventually treated at a medical centre located at 15, Olowo Tabutabu Street, Agric, Ojo.

Rukayat said a few days later she was accompanied by members of the school’s student union to make a statement at the Ojo Police Station. She appealed to the government to curb criminality in the areas.

Another 200-level student from the Faculty of Arts, Joyce (not real name), had a different encounter which left her worried for the few seconds she was stopped by a stranger. On a certain Sunday last year before the lockdown, she and two of her friends were walking down to Iyana-Iba market to buy some groceries when a strange man accosted them.

Joyce said the man accused her of flaunting the colour of his confraternity, saying “You think say we wan toast you, I just wan tell you say na our colour you dey fly.” Joyce told Sunday Punch that her shirt was in fact multi-coloured. “I wore light blue mixed with grey and white that day,” she said.

Joyce added that as two other young men approached them they ran away shouting. Luckily, they escaped unmolested. Joyce said she’s avoided visiting Iyana-Iba market during evenings since the incident.

Besides, a 200-level student of the Department of Physics, Identified only as Ayomide was not so lucky as he left school last week to spend the Easter with his parents at Agbowa.

On Good Friday, Ayomide said he left his hostel by 6am so he could beat traffic. He added that as he trekked past the university’s walls along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, four cutlass-wielding men emerged from the overgrown bush by the roadside.

The assailants inflicted machete cuts on Ayomide, leaving him with a wounded head and bodily harm.

Ayomide managed to escape, scrambling towards the school’s gate wearing a cloak of his own blood. He explained his encounter with the deadly louts to the Marshalls (LASU’s security outfit) he found at the school’s gate.

But despite the pleas by the bystanders, the Marshalls refused to accost the robbers whom Ayomide believed still loitered at the crime scene.

According to Ayomide, his attackers robbed him of his two phones—an iPhone XR bought in March, 2021, for N175, 000, and Huawei Y6 (2019). Ayomide added that the hoodlums took away his new clothes worth N50, 000.

Ayomide received treatment later that morning at the university’s clinic. He stated that he had been depressed and experienced nightmares about the incident since Friday.

The Cassidy hostel, Okokomaiko accomodating a 300-level student from the Faculty of Arts, Abdulazeez Oladele, was burgled when he was a freshman, losing his phone and laptop. In 200 level, last year, as he returned to hostel from lectures on a Thursday evening, he and his roommates were attacked around a new generation bank branch at Cassidy, which is near the university.

His roommates managed to escape but he wasn’t lucky. The hoodlums took away his phone and bag.

Abdulazeez didn’t report the incident. He insisted that “the school isn’t doing enough,” adding that, “students are even being robbed at PPL which is close to school, and even at Aiyepe Gate.”

He urged the university authorities to work with the state government to ensure enough hostels on campus and to increase police presence around student-populated areas.

I want to create next line of generational DJs — DJ Kaywise

With over five years of nurturing, teaching and creating platforms for aspiring DJs in Nigeria, founder of Kaywise Academy, Ayorinde Okiki, popularly known as DJ Kaywise has said the success recorded by the academy over the years has reassured him that with proper structure, Nigerian entertainers will succeed.

Worried about the continued lack of structure that keeps hindering the growth of aspiring music DJs, DJ Kaywise said in a chat with Potpourri that he floated his academy to groom young minds whose interest lies in disc jockeying, adding that he has always been passionate about creating conducive environment of learning for his students.

With over five branches in Nigeria, Kaywise hinted that the academy has graduated over 600 students, who according to him, have become successful DJs across different parts of Africa and impacting lives of others positively.

According to him, “I grew up in an environment where there was and still no proper structure that would guarantee success of stakeholders in the industry and I was moved to contribute my part to correcting the problem, hence the birth of Kaywise Academy.”

“My mission is to create the next line of generational DJs that would show the world that Nigeria has what it takes to be one of the best when it comes to music and sounds.

We can’t continue to wait on those who will not help our situation, so my academy was floated to contribute my quota and give hope and voice to the people,” he said.

KSolo tackles Seyi Shay over ‘harsh’ comments on Nigerian Idol

Music producer, Solomon Oyeniyi, aka KSolo, has lambasted singer, Seyi Shay, for harsh comments to a young singer at this year’s audition of the television reality show, Nigerian Idol.

Seyi Shay had told the singer, “Somebody lied to you and told you to come and audition, and that person, you should go back and tell them they’re not your friends because that was not good audition.

“Oh, you have a good talking voice, and it comes out in your singing voice, but your performance, terrible. You’re never going to make money being a singer.”

Her comments had sparked various diverse reactions on social media.

In an interview with Sunday Scoop, KSolo was of the view that Seyi Shay’s career and attitude to music needed evaluation.

“Imagine someone that her music needs evaluation evaluating another person. She is still a work in progress herself. The hypocrisy in the industry is so bad. There are people who have made ‘legends’, yet they are not on that seat. It is a slap on the music industry’s face. What she said was so bad.

“If an artiste like Small Doctor goes for the Nigerian Idol audition, I am sure he would not be chosen. There are a lot of things attached to music beyond the voice. The craft is also important. Some people can sing in a vocal booth, but when you put them on a stage, they cannot sing. What criteria do the judges even use to select?”

The talented beat maker also maintained that there was a lot of hypocrisy in the music industry. He added, “There is a lot of deceitfulness and hypocrisy in the music industry. Few of us that stand our ground are being given names. To get yourself to the limelight is easy when you have money.

However, when you get there, it’s time for you to rebrand and fix yourself and your craft. But, a lot of people are not doing it. Because of the money on the table, the deceitfulness is so loud.”

Ogun cobbler electrocuted while reconnecting neighbours’ electricity

The dreams of Hammed Omotosho, a secondary school leaver in Agbado, Ogun State, sadly ended after he was electrocuted while fixing the electricity of a building disconnected in the neighbourhood.

The 24-year-old, who was a cobbler and a member of Man O’ War, was reportedly about to accomplish his ambition of enlisting in the Nigerian Army when the tragedy struck.

Punch correspondent learnt that some residents of a house on Ishola Street, Abosule, Agbado Crossing, engaged Omotosho penultimate on Saturday night to reconnect their power supply allegedly disconnected by workers of the electricity distribution company serving the area.

It was gathered that there was an outage at the time Hammed climbed the pole but while he was in the middle of the task, power was restored.

He was said to have got a shock from a naked wire, fell off balance, crashed onto the ground and died on the spot.

A source in the community told punch correspondent that the residents fled in the ensuing panic, adding that the incident was reported to the Agbado Police Division.

The source said, “He (Omotosho) was a cobbler and member of Man O’ War. He was diligent and talented. He assisted people to fix electrical problems in their homes in exchange for a token. The house he went to that Saturday night of March 27 was disconnected and the residents wanted to reconnect the electricity.

“There was no electricity before he started the connection. But while he was at it, power was restored around 11am. He was electrocuted. Those who invited him fled home for fear of being attacked. Policemen from Agbado division came to remove his corpse.”

The deceased’s father, Sikiru, a bricklayer, described him as a kind-hearted son, lamenting that his death was a huge loss to the family.
