Former Zimbabwean First Lady, Grace Mugabe's son arrested for theft

Former first lady Grace Mugabe’s firstborn son Russell Goreraza is currently in police custody after he was arrested for the alleged theft of mining equipment.

37-year-old Goreraza, who is the former first lady’s son from her first marriage, appeared before Concession magistrate Moreblessing Makati together with his 3 alleged accomplices on Monday. Gorereza’s three accomplices are Paul Sithole (45), Aaron Muchenje (31) and Trymore Madzitire (36).

The four had to spend another night in custody after the magistrate postponed the bail ruling to Tuesday.

According to the state’s case, Goreraza ordered Muchenje, Madzitire and Sithole to “dismantle the processing plant” belonging to Tian Bao Mineral Industry (Pvt) Ltd. Tian Bao is currently engaged in mining activities at Smithfield Farm in Mazowe which is owned by the Mugabe family.

As instructed, the three men allegedly arrived at the mining site early in the morning and dismantled the processing plant, before loading components of it into a truck. The state’s papers read,

“the accused loaded a gold smelter, ball mill, electric motor, 200 ball mill metal balls, 50 ball mill liners, 20 slay pumps, and 15 angle iron bars into a Mercedes Benz truck using a crane,”

However, the three’s luck ran out when they were intercepted by the Mazowe police. Upon being questioned over the posession of the stolen mining equipment, the three implicated Goreraza. Following this information, the police apprehended the former first lady’s son and charged him together with Muchenje, Madzitire and Sithole.

Over the years, Goreraza has been involved in a number of controversies dating back to the period when former President Robert Mugabe was in power. He has been accused of grabbing mines and grabbing properties.

4 years after, OAU moves to reinstate students’ union activities

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced plans to reinstate the insitution’s Students’ Union.

This was made known in a statement by the institution’s Dean, Division of Student Affairs, Isiaka Aransi, on Monday.

The university’s statement was a reaction to the ultimatum recently issued by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone D (southwest) chapter, to schools that union activities suspended across the region be reinstated or face “stiff resistance.”

But OAU said on Monday that the proposed demonstration by NANS was needless.

“It has come to the knowledge of the University Management that the National Association of Nigerian students Zone D is planning to stage a protest in respect of “resuscitation of Students’ Union in OAU,” Mr Aransi said.

“The university management wishes to inform all students that prior to the commencement of COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, OAU had taken steps to ensure that Students’ Union was resuscitated on two different occassions but the processes were truncated due to the activities of some group of students on our university campus.

“Meanwhile, protest or no protest, the university management has already determined to reinstate the suspended Students’ Union before the end of this current 2019/2020 academic session.

“In recognition of the right of freedom of association and assembly as well as the right to ensure that students play their roles actively in decision-making processes as one of the major stakeholders in the university, the management, through the Dean of Student Affairs, took another step in January this year 2021 to present another proposal to the university senate with a view to ensuring that the students union was resuscitated.

“Accordingly, the University Senate considered the proposal at its virtual meeting in January 2021, and in its wisdom advised that resuscitation of students union being an exclusive preserve of students should not be executed virtually while the students were not on ground in the university.

“The University management hereby wishes to inform all students (and other stakeholders) that as soon as all students return to campus fully during the Rain Semester of the current academic session, machinery will be put in place to set the ball rolling concerning the resuscitation ofthe students union in OAU.”

Kanye seeks joint custody of kids in Kim Kardashian divorce

Kanye West is seeking joint legal and physical custody of his four children with Kim Kardashian, TMZ reported Monday.

The rapper’s response to Kardashian’s February divorce filing is “basically a mirror image” of his estranged wife’s petition, according to the site, which noted that the joint custody doesn’t necessarily mean a 50/50 split of North, 7, Saint, 5, Chicago, 3, and Psalm, 1.

Kardashian, 40, and West, 43, are not seeking spousal support from each other — an interesting if not entirely unexpected development given the Grammy winner’s spending habits and the fact that the reality star was recently recognized as a billionaire.

In addition, West wants them to be responsible for their own legal fees.

Page Six reported in March that while the couple are co-parenting their children, they are no longer on speaking terms. West has requested that Kardashian not be at the couple’s home whenever he visits the children, and “even before Kim filed for divorce, Kanye changed his numbers and said, ‘You can contact me through my security,'” per a source.

West and Kardashian had a prenup in place, making their split “an easy case of ‘You keep your money and I’ll keep mine,'” the source added.

Bauchi to conduct headcount of commercial s.e.x workers

The Bauchi State Government says it will conduct a headcount of commercial s.e.x workers in the state with a view to having accurate data on them.

Aminu Balarabe-Isah, Permanent Commissioner in charge of Hisbah and Sharia implementation, made this known in Bauchi on Monday during a sensitisation workshop organised for commercial s.e.x workers.

He said the information generated from the exercise would help the commission in taking measures aimed at discouraging them from continuing with their ‘dangerous’ trade.

Mr Isah disclosed plans by the state government to organise empowerment programmes for them, as well as provide them with capital to start small scale businesses.

He explained that investigations conducted by his agency indicated that most of the s.e.x workers took to prostitution as a result of illiteracy, poverty or maltreatment meted on them by their step-mothers.

He said that minor family squabbles also contributed to their decision to take to prostitution, assuring that government would make efforts to reunite them with their parents.

The commissioner expressed the readiness of the state government to organise mass marriages for those of them who were lucky to get serious suitors.

Hafsatu Azare, who spoke on behalf of the s.e.x workers, assured that they were willing to quit the trade if the government would empower them economically, describing their condition as pathetic.

Makinde’s candidate, Arapaja emerges PDP S/W Chairman

The candidate backed by the camp of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja has emerged as the new South-West Zonal Vice Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party on Monday.

Arapaja polled 343 votes to defeat Dr Eddy Olafeso, who scored 330.

Olafeso is of the camp of former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose.

Earlier during the exercise, Fayose reconciled with his main rival, Makinde, acknowledging that the Oyo State Governor is the PDP leader in the southwest region.

His reaction comes after months of leadership tussle for the control of the party among the duo.

Reacting to the zonal congress, Governor Makinde said the PDP is ready to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He explained that the internal wrangling that has rocked the zone has now come to an end.

“We will take it in the spirit of a family contest. We don’t want to defeat ourselves, we want to defeat the APC,” he said.

We have not increased cement price in 15 months - Dangote

The Group Executive Director, Strategy, Portfolio Development & Capital Projects, of Dangote Group Devakumar Edwin, said the company has not increased the price of cement per bag since December 2019 (15 months) despite the rising cost of other materials and commodities in the country.

Briefing editors at the headquarters of the company in Lagos on Monday, the executive director pointed out that sudden surge in demand for cement by operators in the real estate/ construction industry, volatile forex, sliding Naira against dollar, high transportation cost coupled with other logistics were responsible for low supply of cement, leading to shortage in the market and high price by retailers.

According to him, when cement supply gap is bridged, the price impact will be minimized. He clarified that the price of a bag of cement from its factories and plants across Nigeria is N2,450 in Obajana and Gboko, and N2,510 in Ibese inclusive of VAT Market survey by Nigerian Tribune shows that a bag of cement is selling for between N3,200 and N4,000 in Nigerian cities, depending on locations.

Debunking the rumour doing the rounds on the social media that a bag of 50-killogramme of cement was selling for N1,800 in Zambia and N3,500 in Nigeria, Edwin said it was not true, saying the price of cement in other countries across Africa is higher than the cost in Nigeria.

According to his analysis, when the price per ton of cement is $119 in Zambia, $145 in Ghana, $159 in Cameroun and $122 in Sierra Leone, it is $101 in Nigeria. He said that anybody peddling the rumour was just out to discredit the company.

He shared some invoices of various sales transactions of Dangote Cement in Zambia, Ghana and Nigeria as at March 26, 2021.

He said: “While the price of cement per bag is 131 Kwacha in Zambia, which is actually an exchange of 22 kwacha per dollar, comes to $5.90 per bag, which is $119 per ton. “Invoice of sale transaction in Ghana on 26 of March and the selling price per bag comes to 41.9 cedis, and that’s 5.78 cedis per dollar in exchange rate. If you look at that, it comes to $7.25 cent per bag, which is $145 per ton in Ghana. In Sierra Leone, we have $122 per ton and Cameroun $159 per ton.

“If you look at our prices here today, in Obajana, the, export rate price is N2,150. In Gboko, the export rate price is N2,450 including all VAT and taxes; and in Ibeshe, it is N2,110. So if you take our cement price at naira to a dollar today it comes to $101,” the group executive director said.

Besides, the group executive director of Dangote cement said there was no basis for comparing the price of the product when looking at the cost of input, cost of manufacturing and everything from country to country.

“Nobody is comparing the price of rice, or maize or diesel or petroleum to the price in Zambia. But just because somebody wanted to discredit us, they went to say oh! this is the price,” he said.

He also attributed high exchange rate, high cost of diesel to rising cost of cement, adding that the company does not have enough capacity to transport cement to different locations in the country.

According to him, most of the trucks have been trapped in Apapa port, saying they always spent average of two weeks to go in and out of Apapa.

My mother prayed about my anger issues for 15 years ― Keppy Ekpenyong

Veteran Nollywood actor, Keppy Ekpenyoung  has made some revelations about his anger issues In a new interview.

Anyone close to veteran actor, Keppy Ekpenyong, would know that the actor has a bright and bubbly personality. One known trait about the bald actor is that he is a very down to earth person.

However, in an exclusive interview with The Punch, the actor noted that at a point in his life, he had anger issues. He revealed that his rage was so bad that for 15 years, his mother always prayed about his anger issues.

Ekpenyong said, “I know that for about fifteen years, my mother’s prayers when we made New Year resolution was that, ‘I pray that Keppy manages his temper more.’ So, I began to learn from the very first years and I started to control my temper. I want to present myself as a very happy person, even when I am not happy. It is a deliberate attempt; it started out being deliberate, but now, it is a part of me.

“My temper was very bad at the time; it was vicious. Now, it is in the past and it is safer as it is in the past. I had friends who used to tell me, ‘Keppy manage your temper; do not lose your temper. Nobody wants it.’ So I grew through that era.”

The iconic thespian noted that fatherhood helped him overcome his anger issues as he learnt to be more tolerant.

“What encouraged me was when I became a father. I began to tolerate more things that I ordinarily would not have. Tolerance is a hallmark of maturity and growing up,” he said.

Ekpenyong who hardly speaks about his family revealed that he made the decision on his own not to expose his family to public glare.

“I rarely speak about my family in public because they are private and that is how it is supposed to be. There was no form of agreement between my spouse and me; we all have choices. I do not even know if my kids are happy with me as an actor, but I know they are happy with me as a father. We keep our private lives private. I cannot interfere and they do not interfere; so it has been great for us,” he stated.

When asked if any of his children are toeing his path, the veteran actor simply said, “Sounds like a joke. No, definitely not. But they might, because we start out thinking we might never, but then we veer. We end up realizing that we could also be. Nothing is impossible.”

Taking a trip down memory lane, the actor who bagged a master’s degree in International Law and diplomacy, noted that his parents were his support system when he ventured into the entertainment industry.

He said, “I got into the movie industry with a master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy and it did not diminish anything about me and my passion. I think the best cushion I had was that I had the encouragement of my parents for doing what I wanted to do. That is the best encouragement that I had. It is impossible for anybody to say that life is a bed of roses unless you recognize the fact.”

Ekpenyong, who is known for his baldness, revealed the reason for his decision to spot a bald look, saying, “I spot a bald look to keep the grey hair out.
