Rapper CDQ granted bail, still under investigation ― NDLEA

Popular rap artiste, CDQ, has been granted bail by the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, though he remains under investigation.

On Wednesday night, men of the NDLEA arrested Sodiq Yusuf, popularly known as CDQ, in his Lekki residence.

He was said to have been picked up by the anti-drug enforcement agency for allegedly violating the drug law following an intelligence report which the agency caught wind of.

However, in an exclusive chat with The Punch, NDLEA’s Director, Media, and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, confirmed his arrest, saying the case was still being investigated as some substance known as ‘loud’ a cannabis variant was found in the rapper’s house.

Babafemi said, “Yes, CDQ was arrested in his house at Lekki for being in possession of cannabis. He was arrested based on intelligence. As of last night, he was granted administrative bail, but he is expected back into custody today because it is an ongoing investigation.

“Some substances were found and he mentioned some names of some other big artistes. So, it is an ongoing investigation.”

Babafemi further noted that CDQ cooperated as he mentioned names of other big artistes who used the substance.

The spokesman told The Punch that the outcome of the investigation would determine if the rapper would be charged to court or counselled by the agency.

He said, “The outcome of the investigation would determine what would happen. There are cases whereby the investigation shows some sufficient infractions, and then the case will go to court. There are other cases whereby if the quantity is insignificant, we will bring him in for counselling and possible rehabilitation. Those are likely scenarios that will happen.”

When The Punch reached out to the rapper via the telephone, his number was switched off. However, CDQ reacted via an Instagram post, hinting that someone was trying to set him up.

He wrote, “No sleep for the wicked. Iyalaya yin o ni sun for dis Lagos… They tryna set me up today but Olohun wa.”(sic)

Prince Philip’s funeral: Queen Elizabeth bans Princes Harry, Andrew, others from wearing military uniform

Members of the royal family have been banned from wearing their popular military uniforms during the funeral for Prince Philip.

According to The Sun, UK, Queen Elizabeth barred all members of the royal family from wearing military outfits.

The Queen, according to the report, took the decision in order to avoid the sole focus of Prince Philip’s funeral from getting deviated.

There was previously a drama around Prince Harry’s choice of attire for the funeral, and many people wanted him not to be in his military uniform after he gave up his position as a working royal.

In the same vein, Prince Andrew, was also told to opt out of wearing his military uniform over his friendship with convicted s.e.x offender Jeffrey Epstein

Now Elizabeth II has decided that no one should wear a military uniform on that day but all senior male royals wear suits and ties.

A military source told The Sun, “It’s the most eloquent solution to the problem.”

“The Queen and the rest of the family want nothing to detract from what is most important, commemorating the Duke’s remarkable life,” a separate royal source said.

You governance style pushed Twitter to locate Africa’s HQ in Ghana – PDP tells Buhari, APC

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wednesday claimed that the decision by Social network company, Twitter, to locate it’s African headquarters in Ghana is largely informed by what it called the misrule of President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

This is as the party noted that Twitter’s preference for Ghana over Nigeria “was occasioned by inconsistent economic policies, obnoxious suppression of free speech, stifling of online freedom and open internet by the Buhari administration and the APC.”

In a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman of the party, the PDP added that the development “is in addition  to infrastructural decay, massive corruption and manifest failure of the Buhari Presidency and the APC to address the escalated insecurity brought upon our nation by their incompetent watch.”

The statement further read: “Indeed the decision by Twitter to by-pass Nigeria to locate its African operational base in Ghana is another sad commentary of how our nation, which was hitherto a global investment hub under the PDP, has now been so degraded in global economic competitiveness under the APC.

“Nigerians were heavily despaired on Monday when the founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, announced that his company will be setting up its headquarters on the continent in Ghana despite Nigeria’s domineering twitter traffic in the sub region.

“With an estimated 39.6 million Twitter subscribers in Nigeria, which is bigger than the population of Ghana, Nigeria ought to be the destination, but for the anti-people policies of the APC administration.

“It is sad that our nation has continued to lose huge foreign direct investments, which would have brought in more economic opportunities, especially for our youths, just because the Buhari Presidency and the APC lack the capacity to deliver on good governance.

“The preference by Twitter for Ghana over Nigeria has further demonstrated that the Buhari administration’s claims on ease of doing business in Nigeria are mere media hypes.

“Moreover, if President Buhari and the APC have the interest of the struggling youth demography of our nation at heart, they ought to have taken the necessary proactive steps to ensure that Twitter brought this huge investment to Nigeria, particularly given that we have the highest number of Twitter users on the continent.

“It is indeed disturbing that the Buhari administration is taking no decisive steps to address the worsening situation in our country, which has become the world poverty capital under their watch.

“The incompetence, insensitivity, corruption and laid-back attitude of the Buhari administration have continued to bring woes to our nation with an escalated 33% unemployment rate, closure of over 40 million hitherto vibrant businesses with millions of families now unable to afford the basic necessities of life.

“It is painful that despite our national potentials, President Buhari administration has not shown the required commitment of engaging foreign investors and captains of industries to attract investments as being done by Presidents of other countries.

“Instead the Buhari Presidency is only interested in accumulating foreign loans and mortgaging the future of our nation.

“It has therefore becomes clearer that our nation cannot achieve any headway with the APC on the saddle.

“The PDP therefore charges Nigerians to remain focused as we collectively rally on the opportunities granted by democracy to rescue our nation from the stranglehold of APC misrule.”

Tokyo Olympics in doubt as Japan enters fourth wave of Covid-19

A senior Japanese ruling party official said canceling this year’s Olympics in Tokyo remains an option if the coronavirus crisis becomes too dire, as the fourth wave of infections surges less than 100 days from the planned start of the Games.

“If it seems impossible to do it any more, then we have to stop, decisively,” Toshihiro Nikai, secretary-general of the Liberal Democratic Party, said in comments to broadcaster TBS.

Cancellation is “of course” an option, Nikai said. “If the Olympics were to spread infection, then what are the Olympics for?” he added.

A key backer of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, party heavyweight Nikai is known for his frank comments, which come as many other ruling party lawmakers have avoided discussing the hot button issue of a possible cancellation.

The world’s biggest sporting event has already been delayed by a year and is being held without international spectators.

Japan is grappling with rising coronavirus infections, with numbers trending higher in Tokyo after the government ended a state of emergency, and Osaka suffering a record number of cases.

The government is pushing ahead with preparations incorporating social distancing measures and other restrictions for the Games set to begin on July 23, with a scaled-back torch relay underway.

“We’ll hold (the Games) in a way that’s feasible,” Taro Kono, a popular minister in charge of Japan’s vaccination drive, said on a separate TV programme, according to Kyodo News. “That may be without spectators,” he added.

However, polls indicate little support in Japan for holding the Games during a global pandemic. “Canceling Olympics” was trending on Twitter in Japan on Thursday with more than 35,000 tweets from users.

“If this person says it, Olympics cancellation looks like a reality,” tweeted @marumaru_clm in reference to Nikai.

Olympic organisers, Japan’s national Olympic committee and the Tokyo government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The comments from lawmakers come as health experts raise alarm at the spread of infection and strain it is placing on the medical system.

Japan’s top medical adviser, Shigeru Omi, acknowledged the pandemic had entered a fourth wave, driven by mutant strains, with Kyoto University professor Hiroshi Nishiura urging in a magazine commentary that the Olympics be postponed.

Akira Koike, an opposition lawmaker with the Japanese Communist Party, reacted to Nikai’s comments on Twitter saying holding the event is already “impossible” and a decision on cancellation should be made “quickly”.

NBAWF condemns alleged killing of pregnant lawyer, Adaeze Ikpeama by husband

The Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum has condemned the alleged killing of a lawyer, Adaeze Ikpeama, by her husband, Anthony.

It was gathered that the six-month pregnant Adaeze was allegedly beaten by her husband at their residence in Lagos on Saturday, which made her to become unconscious.

It was learnt that Adaeze was rushed to a hospital, where she was placed on oxygen.

The deceased’s colleague, Chukwudi Iwuchukwu, who chronicled the incident on his Facebook page, alleged that Anthony went to the hospital to remove the oxygen mask, which led to Adaeze suffering cardiac arrest and her eventual death.

Iwuchukwu noted that the couple had been at loggerheads since they got married in 2014, adding that the Covid-19 lockdown increased the domestic violence that the deceased faced daily.

He said, “When Adaeze Destiny Ikpeama got married to Anthony Elvis Ikpeama in 2014, little did she know that the institution she looked forward to enjoying would cut her life journey short.

“Immediately the marriage was sealed, the man Adaeze got married to immediately turn into a beast by turning the Madonna University trained lawyer into a punching bag. Even when relatives from both sides intervened several times by pleading with Anthony to stop beating his wife, if not for anything, she was the mother of his kids and his partner, the man was obtuse as he continued to beat the poor girl any time he was not in a good mood.

“COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown of staying at home made the domestic violence worse as it now became a daily ritual. Two days ago, another round of beating started and this time round, it was very intense, which eventually ended up with him taking her life.

“His focus was the tummy as he was punching her 6 months pregnant tummy with righteous anger and all the energy he could muster. He did not stop till she gave up and went into a coma. When Adaeze went into a coma and was rushed to the hospital by her good neighbours who came to her aid, Anthony followed them to the hospital and immediately she was admitted and oxygen was placed on her to resuscitate her, the husband went to her bedside and then removed the oxygen mask and that was how Adaeze suffered cardiac arrest and died.”

Iwuchukwu, who added that Anthony was arrested on Monday, said he was granted bail by the police on the grounds that the couple’s children were too young to be left alone.

However, Iwuchukwu noted that Anthony was later re-arrested on Monday by policemen from the Zone 2 Police Command after public outcry about his release.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the suspect was not released, adding that the case involved murder.

He said, “The man was not released; it is a murder case and it is not subjected to bail. The police do not have the power to release him on bail, not in that circumstance. As of yesterday (Monday), he was at the Ajah Police Station, and today (Tuesday), he was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti.”

The NBAWF, in a statement on Tuesday by its Head of Advocacy Committee, Folashade Alli, urged the security agencies to investigate the matter and prosecute the man.

The statement read, “We are distressed to learn that the abuse by her husband was alleged to have gone on over the years. It is painful to know that our late colleague, an advocate, who holds the brief of others, had her life ended in such gruesome circumstances.

“To this end, we demand from the relevant security agencies that the circumstances leading to the death of our dear colleague be thoroughly investigated and the culprit prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

“We have also noted a rise in cases of domestic violence in our society at large. We, therefore, use this medium to call on our female lawyers to speak up and out on domestic violence issues using the platform of the NBAWF, so that such issues can be handled proactively.

“The NBAWF has put in place mechanisms and platforms to help female lawyers to protect themselves in such situations. We will work with the relevant security agencies, family members and friends of our late colleague to ensure that our colleague gets justice.”

Osun Government suspends three school principals for allowing Pro-Oduduwa group to address their students

Osun State Government on Wednesday suspended three public school principals for allowing a pro-Oodua nation group to address their students.

The government also dissociated itself from the group preaching disunity and secession to students in some schools in the state.

The Punch investigation revealed that some people had early in the week visited the three secondary schools in Iresi, a town in the Boluwaduro Local Government Area of the state to addressed their students.

But the government in a statement by the Commissioner for Education, Mr Folorunsho Bamisayemi, said the administration of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola was not aware and never gave consent to the group to speak with public school students.

The statement reads in part, “Nigeria is one entity and will continue to remain so. The State Government of Osun never gave consent to any group to speak with students of public schools on a matter we know can cause disunity and chaos in the country.”

Also reacting, the Special Adviser to Governor Oyetola on Education, Mr Jamiu Olawumi,  said it was unfortunate that some unscrupulous elements were going about polluting the minds of  young children because they knew that they were still naive.

Google’s Doodle honors music legend Oliver de Coque’s 74th posthumous birthday

Google on Wednesday unveiled a Doodle to posthumously mark the 74th birthday of Nigerian music legend and highlife maestro Oliver de Coque, one of Africa’s most prolific recording artists of all time.

The Doodle, created by Lagos-based graphic artist and illustrator Ohab TBJ, pays tribute to the guitarist who died in June 2008 at 61 following a heart attack.

The creative inspiration was drawn from De Coque’s love for the guitar, his energetic performance style, his unique music brand, and his love of tradition and culture.

“Oliver de Coque was a popular musician from the Igbo part of Nigeria. As a kid back in the 90s, I recalled my late dad playing his songs. I will never forget watching my uncles and aunts dancing to his music; their happiness was contagious,” says Ohab TBJ.

London court slams perpetual injunction on woman ‘defaming’ Olukoya, MFM

A London High Court (Queen’s Bench Division) has granted a perpetual injunction restraining Maureen Badejo from publishing further defamatory words against or concerning Dr. Daniel Olukoya, his family and the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM).

The judge, Master Gary Thornett, also ordered Badejo to pay the legal costs incurred by the Olukoyas in the suit.

He ruled that further court session(s) would be held to determine the actual cost to be awarded to Dr Olukoya, his family and the Church.

The hearing, which began at 10:30am on Tuesday, April 13, finished at about 1:05pm.

The claimants instituted the suit following several claims – no fewer than 52 – allegedly made against them by Badejo and her GIO TV on YouTube and Facebook.

They were represented by Mrs Nath Director and Solicitor of Nath Solicitors London Boutique firm specialising in defamation and by Mr Jonathan Price of Doughty Street Chambers.

In her counter-claim Badejo demandes monies allegedly lost by her from the shutting down of some of her broadcasts by You-Tube and Facebook sequel to complaints from Dr. Olukoya’s lawyers.

But, dismissing her claim, Master Thornet described it as a “frivolous”, and an abuse of process.

He held: “…it is overwhelmingly clear that the nature of this defamation is severe and serious…..and that the number of publications are considerable”.

Responding to the ruling Dr Olukoya, his family and the Church said in a statement: “These victories are a tribute to the Lord our God who would never permit evil to triumph over righteousness.”

Tuesday’s decision makes it the second time Badejo would receive knocks from the justice system for defaming the Olukoyas and the Church.

On February 9, 2021, an Abeokuta High Court awarded N250million each to the Olukoyas and MFM (making a total N500 million) as aggravated and exemplary damages for libel committed against them by Badejo.

The court also ordered Badejo to immediately pull down and erase each of the offending online publications/posts concerning the claimants from the internet.
