Copa del Rey: Messi reacts as Barcelona defeat Athletic Bilbao in final

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, has said they deserved some happiness, after they crushed Athletic Bilbao 4-0 in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday.

Messi grabbed a brace as Ronald Koeman’s men clinched their first trophy of the season.

Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong were also on target at Seville.

It was the 35th trophy Messi has won as a Barca player, but his first Copa del Rey as the club’s captain.

“I am really happy for this group of players because they deserved some happiness,” he told Barca TV.

“It’s really special to be the captain of this club, where I have spent my whole life, and it’s a really special Copa for me, to be able to lift [the trophy].”

Queen wipes away tears as she follows her beloved Prince Philip's coffin [photos]

The Queen wiped away tears and was forced to mourn alone away from her family in St George's Chapel during Prince Philip's Covid-hit Windsor Castle funeral today as she said an emotional final goodbye to her 'strength and stay' after their extraordinary 73-year life together.

Her Majesty looked grief-stricken and bowed her head in reverence as she accompanied her beloved husband's coffin on its final journey while their eldest son Prince Charles cried as he walked behind the casket into church followed by other devastated royals.

The Duke of Edinburgh's coffin was covered in his personal standard and carried his sword, naval cap and a wreath of flowers with a handwritten note from his wife as pallbearers placed him on to his extraordinary self-designed green Land Rover Defender hearse in the castle's quadrangle packed with hundreds of armed personnel.

After the eight minute procession and the 50 minute service, his coffin was lowered into the Royal Vault. A lament was played by a lone piper of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Last Post was then sounded by buglers of Philip's beloved Royal Marines who then played Action Stations at the specific request of The Duke of Edinburgh.

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, pronounced the Blessing before the 30 royal mourners silently filed out of the church into cars to take them the short journey back to castle. Harry and William decided to walk back with Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, and were seen smiling speaking animatedly as they were reunited for the first time in a year where their relationship became fractured.

The emotional Queen had arrived at the funeral as the national anthem played and the royal Bentley stopped next to her beloved husband's coffin, where she poignantly paused for a moment of reflection as cannons fired and bells tolled in remembrance of the duke, wiping tears from her eyes.

Her Majesty was then driven to St George's Chapel with her lady in waiting Susan Hussey, before being sat alone at the front of the church where she stood and bowed her head during the national minute's silence. She looked at the coffin throughout the poignant service, where the majority of her children and grandchildren were on the verge of tears.

Following behind the coffin was the royal procession, led by Philip's children Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. The grandchildren, including Prince William and Prince Harry, followed but the feuding brothers were separated by their cousin Peter Phillips, viewed as a 'peacemaker' between the two.

Uber, Bolt drivers threaten strike on Monday

Some Uber and Bolt e-cab drivers in Lagos on Saturday asked the e-hailing companies to immediately increase fares being charged by the operators, failing which they would go off the roads on Monday.

The e-cab operators, under the aegis of Professional E-hailing Drivers and Private Owners Association (PEDPA), threatened to embark on the strike if their demands were not met.

Mr Idris Shonuga, National President of PEDPA, at a news conference in Lagos, called for immediate upward review of e-cab fares to reflect the current economic reality in the country.

According to Shonuga, over 95 per cent of e-hailing transactions are consummated through Uber and Bolt platforms.

He said that the companies had refused to review its pricing despite unprecedented increases in the price of fuel, vehicles spare parts, food items and other essential commodities in the country.

“In a quest to work and harmoniously at resolving some issues, the association wrote several letters to the companies which was not attended to, showing nonchalant attitude towards our plight.

“Your companies have failed, refused and neglected to honour our request for a meeting to discuss issues beneficial to all e-hailing drivers in Nigeria.

“And to fashion a harmonious relationship that will benefit, dignify and improve the standard of living of e-hailing drivers, private car owners and the general standard of e-hailing business in the country.

“Instead of fixing a new and reasonable fare in line with inflation, the companies have recklessly continued to maintain the low fare, thereby, impoverishing hard-working young Nigerians who are diligently and lawfully trying to make a decent living,” Shonuga said.

The e-cab operators also demanded adequate welfare package for drivers and compensation to the families of those that lost their lives or are permanently disabled in the line of duty,

The association said that more than 15 drivers had lost their lives, while some had been permanently disabled in accidents in the course of the service.

More than 20 others have also lost their lives through kidnapping or killed by ritualists without any compensation from the operators, the association said.

Shonuga said that the association was considering taking legal action to seek remedies against the e-hailing companies if their demands were not met.

Anthony Joshua insists he would defeat Fury in blockbuster fight

Unified Boxing champion, Anthony Joshua has vowed again that he would defeat WBC title holder Tyson Fury in their forthcoming match to hold later this year.

Joshua told the Jonathan Ross Show, on Saturday when asked if Tyson could win but said unfortunately, he would lose the match.

Asked if Tyson could claim his three major belts, Joshua laughed: “Unfortunately he’s not going to win.”

The Unified boxing champion also said thathe would be retiring from boxing in five or six years time.

At the age of 31, Joshua has become a two-time world champion, but believes he still has plenty more to achieve before eventually bowing out of boxing.

No man is responsible for my success –Mercy Eke

The winner of BBNaija Season 4, Mercy Eke, is not happy with the claims in some quarters that a man is responsible for her success.

In a video uploaded to her YouTube channel, the reality star said, “In this part of the world, people believe a man is behind the success of a woman, whether she is married or single.

I work hard for everything I own today. When people say a man is behind these things, I find it appalling. However, it does not get to me anymore because what else would one say? It only shows that my success is visible.”

When a fan asked her about the state of her relationship with Ike Onyema, she said, “Break up happened. We are done. That ship sank a long time ago. I am in a happy place and he is good as well. Stop flooding my timeline with this silly question; we are over. So, let’s just keep it moving.”

Eke also stated that the fear of failure makes her stronger. She said, “My biggest fear in life is failure. I don’t want to fail and go back to the streets. I don’t want to roast corn anymore. I just want to keep doing what I know how to do best. God has blessed me.

The fear of failure makes me stronger. I want to be a better person. I want today to be better than yesterday.

That is why no matter what is thrown at me, I would never stop growing. I would never stop establishing myself and I would never stop dreaming,”

According to the former BBN contestant, she sometimes forgets that she is a celebrity.

She added, “I worked hard for this fame and I won’t let the fame get to me. Sometimes, I even forget that I am a celebrity. I drive myself and do things a normal person does.”

Musa to play for free at Pillars

Ahmed Musa will not be paid in his short stint at Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Saturday PUNCH reports.

Musa, 28, signed for the four-time Nigerian champions under the Elite Players Programme of the League Management Company, which encourages top Nigerian internationals to play for local clubs.

According to LMC boss Shehu Dikko, the programme works in two ways.

A club can identify and sign such players, or the LMC itself can sign the player and assign them to a club of their choice.

It was the latter for Musa.

“We spoke to him about coming back home to play, and as someone who is always ready to give back, he did not hesitate,” Dikko told ESPN.

“Once the agreement was signed, the choice of which club to play for was up to him. A number of clubs wanted him. We put everything in front of him and he made the decision to go to Kano Pillars.”

Musa has been a free agent since October 2020, when he left Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, with whom he won the Saudi Pro League title and Super Cup after joining them from Leicester City in 2018.

Enugu police arrest woman for allegedly killing her stepson

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command attached to the 9th Mile Police Division have arrested one Mrs. Nnenna Egwuagu for allegedly murdering her stepson.

Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said the 29-yr-old suspect, who hails from Umulumgbe in Udi Local Council of the state, “administered a noxious substance to her three-year-old stepson, Wisdom Egwuagu, thereby causing his sudden death.”

Ndukwe disclosed that Nnenna’s husband and father of the deceased, Justine Egwuagu, reported the incident to the Police, alleging, “the unusual actions of the suspect towards the child caused his death.”

“She claimed that her action was due to her husband’s inability to take care of her and their daughter, and that she wanted the child to become sick, so her husband could spend money to treat him.

Meanwhile, the Police have revealed that the container of the noxious substance and syringe the suspect used to administer the substance to the child had been recovered, while further investigation into the case was ongoing at the State Criminal and Investigation Department (CID).

Russia detains Ukraine’s consulate general for ‘spying’

Russia has detained Ukraine’s consulate general Oleksandr Sosonyuk for “spying”

According to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), Oleksandr Sosonyuk received classified information from law enforcement agency databases.

The spying claims come amid high tension between the two ex-Soviet countries with fears the situation could deteriorate into war.

A statement from the FSB said he was “caught red-handed” in a meeting with a Russian citizen “receiving classified information from law enforcement agencies and FSB databases”.

The FSB said: “The foreign diplomat will be handled in accordance with the norms of international law.”

The security service said his activities were incompatible with his status as a diplomat.

He “has a clear hostile nature in relation to Russia.

“This activity is incompatible with the status of a diplomatic worker and is clearly hostile against Russian Federation”, the message reads.

Meanwhile, Russia has massed almost 100,000 troops on its borders with Ukraine in recent days, sparking fears of a full-scale invasion.

How I strangled creditor disturbing me to repay N100,000 — Suspect

A revenue collector in the Umuleri area of Anambra State, Ifeanyi Ezinwa, is being held by the police for the murder of his relative, Chukwuebuka Iloegbunam.

Ezinwa reportedly strangled 19-year-old Iloegbunam for persistently demanding repayment of N100,000 he borrowed from him.

City Round learnt that Ezinwa, 29, asked the victim to meet him at a bush path near a secondary school in the town around 8.30pm on the pretence of paying the debt.

It was said that Ezinwa hid a knife in a loaf of bread and aimed the weapon upon Iloegbunam’s arrival.

In the ensuing altercation, Iloegbunam reportedly managed to collect the knife from Ezinwa and stabbed him. The debtor later overpowered him and strangled him. Ezinwa was said to have gone to the town, claiming that he and the deceased were attacked by robbers.

He was consequently arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Awka.

The case was later taken over by the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team led by DCP Abba Kyari, following a petition by the deceased’s family.

“It was at the IRT office that he finally confessed to the crime. He said he committed the act alone on January 15, 2021 around 8.30pm. He lured the deceased to a lonely path near Umuleri Technical School, stabbed and strangled him,” a police source told City Round.

Ezinwa, who collects levies at markets in the town on behalf of elders, explained that he took N100,000 from the revenue. He said he borrowed N100,000 from the victim so he could turn in the revenue on the designated date.

He said, “I am married with three children. I dropped out of secondary school at SS2, months after my father died. I learnt how to drive and started driving commercial buses. It was not easy for me. About two years ago, some of our kinsmen invited me to work for the community. I am a revenue collector for the elderly men in the community.

“We have markets and every trader is expected to pay a certain amount of money. I spent part of the money I collected. I knew I would lose my job if they noticed a shortage. It was out of desperation that I approached Chukwuebuka (Iroegbunam) who ran a provision store in our village. He is my relative. We are from the same kindred in Umuleri. I borrowed N100,000 from him in December 2020 and promised to pay back on January 10. I could not meet up with the deadline and he kept disturbing me and threatened to report me to the Igwe (king).

“I made up my mind to silence him. I bought a loaf of bread and hid a sharp knife in it. I called him to meet me at Aguleri junction around 8pm. He came with an okada man and I asked the rider to go.”

Ezinwa said they both took a walk under the guise that they were heading for where to get the money, adding that along the way he lied to Iroegbunam that he wanted to urinate.

He stated, “There are bushes around the school and people hardly pass through the route. I immediately brought out the knife. He saw me on time and started fighting. He took the knife and stabbed me before I grabbed his neck and strangled it. I ran to the palace and the Igwe of Umuleri was not around. I told the security men I met that I was attacked by armed robbers and they asked me to go to the hospital for treatment.

“The next day, the chairman of security in our community came with the police and arrested me. They found Iroegbunam’s body but I insisted that we were attacked. I eventually told the police the truth. I cannot explain the devil that entered me.”

Pep Guardiola snubs Yaya Toure’s letter of apology

Manchester City legend Yaya Toure has confirmed he wrote a letter of apology to Pep Guardiola in order to find peace.

Toure, 37, is regarded as one of the club’s greatest ever players winning three Prem titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his eight-year stint at Man City but left almost unsung.

While City built a statue of David Silva and also planning to build one for Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure feels he is not welcome back at the club.

The midfielder’s exit at the Etihad in 2018 was tarnished with comments accusing Guardiola of having a problem with African players in an explosive interview with France Football.

He is now trying to repair his relationship with the club but Guardiola and owner Khaldoon Al Mubarak did not reply to his letters of apology.

Reported by the Daily Mail, Toure said: “That interview was my big, huge mistake.

“This one was wrong. I want to apologise for what happened, I want to apologise for doing something wrong.

“We decided we would try to communicate with some important people at the club to apologise and say I’ve been indecent to the club.

“Since then, it has been a very, very long while waiting for an answer, but we don’t get it.

“And, of course, if he feels like that, I cannot do anything.

"Of course, I’ve been in touch with some people there. But the people at the top, it’s impossible.

“I want peace. We don’t want this (acrimony) all the time.

“For the love of the fans, for the love of the club, sometimes things have to be settled the right way. I’ve been in touch with some people there.”

Toure also played under Guardiola and Barcelona but lost his place in the side to Sergio Busquests.

In his explosive interview, Toure said: “It feels like he was jealous of me, he saw me as a rival… as if I was taking the limelight away from him.

“He was cruel with me. Do you really think he could’ve been like that with Iniesta?

“It got to the point I asked myself if it was because of my colour.

“I’m not the first, other Barca players asked the question too. Maybe us Africans aren’t always treated the same by certain people.

“When you see the problems he [Pep] has often had with African players, everywhere he has been, I ask myself questions.

“He’s too intelligent to be caught. He’ll never admit it [not liking Africans].

“But the day he picks a team with five Africans in, I promise I will send him a cake!”

Forces against FG’s NIN policy behind attacks against me – Pantami

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has explained that forces against the Federal Government policy of compulsory National Identity Number (NIN) registration for all Nigerians and those residing in the country are behind the attacks against him.

Pantami in an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES dismissed all the allegations against him, describing them as ‘untrue’.

He further denied links to extremist views, saying criminals and other ‘entrenched interests’ are behind the attacks on him. He said, “I have no doubt about this. It has to do with the National Identification Number. Do you know one thing? This policy was started in 2011, it was not successful. Why? It was fought.

“In 2015, it came up, it was not successful. In 2018 there was a time that there were meetings between government and mobile network operators.

“And it was actually announced that by the agreement with government, the deadline was January 2018. It is there online, I will share it with you if you like. By January 2018, it was not implemented, because there are forces against it. There are forces!

Pantami explained that the National Identification Number registration is not only meant for Nigerians and that it could be obtained by anybody in Nigeria.

“Now they have started coming with the news that people are coming from neighbouring countries to register. What they fail to understand is that the National Identification Number is not only for Nigerians; anybody in Nigeria can obtain it.

“Section 16 and 17 of the Act mention the registrable people in the country – citizens, legal residents, legal permanent residents, and legal residents for a minimum of two years. So, it is not only for citizens. And it is also important to know that this is not just an indication that they are citizens of Nigeria.

“It is rather an indication that you presented your biometric data, so the government has control over your data.

“And that data of NIMC (National Identity Management Commission), nobody has access to it in any way he likes. Getting access to it illegally is 10 years in prison. It is there in the law. But people will like to discredit it, because they don’t like it.

“As long as it is implemented by the government, it will go a long way in reducing crime and based on the statistics we have been seeing now, it’s really encouraging.

“As government, our priority is the protection of the lives and property of our citizens. Security is our priority as a government – whether in agric, digital economy, education or in health, in whatever. President Muhammadu Buahari is so passionate about security, and he directed me to do that because he knows I try to persevere despite challenges and do what is right in the interest of our citizens and humanity.”

“You know as a government appointee, and at this level, if you say you are going to be intimidated by everything, then you cannot do the work. You cannot do the work. I was with the Minister of Foreign Affairs this week, on April 12. I was with the minister. I was with the ambassadors of the U.K., the U.S., South Korea, and many other countries.

“Even this issue that we are talking about, based on our findings, preliminary investigation, many people are not happy with what we have been doing – linking National Identification Number with SIM. Because a situation will come that all the people using SIM to commit crime will not be able to do that.

“If they do that, the government will be able to intercept them easily. This is what they don’t want to happen.”

And this is a mandate given to me by President Muhammadu Buhari. He personally signed the letter that ‘you are mandated to do that’.

“As his appointee, I should either do it or say I cannot. So, since I am willing to serve my country, I must continue to do it to the best of my ability.

“So, in my meeting with them, they even encouraged me to push it and make it very successful.”
