The Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has announced the arrival of a contingent of 144 policemen and women from Nigeria to boost stabilisation efforts.
The officers, including women, quietly departed Nigeria at the weekend.
They have Samuel Ita as the commander.
AMISOM Police operations coordinator Daniel Ali Gwambal said 30 of the police officers will serve under the AMISOM for one year.
They will be deployed to Beletweyne in HirShabelle State.
The rest will serve in various roles in the capital, Mogadishu.
“They are here in order to fulfil the mandate of AMISOM with regards to operational support to the Somalis and at the same time to mentor the Somali Police Force (SPF),” Gwambal said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.
“There are certain specific duties that are also incumbent on them to perform while they are here such as regular patrols at checkpoints, guard static duties and other duties that involve general policing,” he added.
Gwambal said the officers will work on providing VIP escort and protection services, training and assisting the SPF in public order management.
They will also conduct joint patrols with their Somali counterparts and secure key government installations and high-level events.
The AU mission said the arrival of the Nigerian contingent is a major boost to law and order efforts, as they will be working in concert with their Somali counterparts in ensuring improved security in liberated areas.
The commander of the newly deployed unit, Samuel Ita, said his officers were eager to begin discharging their duties, to help advance the mission’s mandate.
Members of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Oyo state wing have refuted the claim that they had placed their weight behind the 2023 governorship ambition of Adebayo Adelabu.
In a statement today by ALGON Oyo state Chairman, Prince Abass Aleshinloye stated that the information going around that the Association has declared support for Chief Adebayo Adelabu’s 2023 gubernatorial ambition is false.
Aleshinloye said that individual preference and personal leanings should not be mixed up with the official standing of the association.
He also opined that there was nothing bad in honouring invitation from party members.
The statement read: “My attention has been drawn to a recent online publication in which Oyo ALGON was said to have endorsed a particular candidate.
“This is not true as individual interest cannot be ascribed to be the official position of ALGON as a body.
“There is nothing bad in honouring invitation from any party member/leader, but there is a need to be careful not to be quoted out of context at this period.
“The action of the journalist to misrepresent the opinion of the individual chairman or some chairmen attending a programme to be the official position of ALGON as a body is unfair and condemnable.
”Once again, ALGON has not endorsed any politician for any political office, more so, INEC has not issued a time table for political activities and our party, APC has also not done so”.

The Group Managing Director, Malam Mele Kyari, made this known at the end of a closed door meeting with Petroleum Transport Drivers (PTD), National Association of Road Transporters Owners (NARTO) and oil marketers in Abuja on Monday.
Ex-depot price is the price marketers buy products from depot owners; it determines the pump price at filling stations.
He said: “We want to inform oil marketing companies that NNPC will not increase the pump price of PMS in May.
“I am giving the assurance and I ask Nigerians to go about their normal businesses; we have over 20 billion litres of petrol in our custody.

“Petrol will be available in all the depots in the country including NNPC dispatched depot across the country, so nobody should panic in buying the product,” he said.

The family of the Obadu of Ilemeso Ekiti in the Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Oba David Oyewumi, and the people of the community are anxious to secure the release of the monarch from the den of kidnappers, where he has been since last Thursday.
Family sources, who said on Monday that the kidnappers contacted them on Saturday and demanded N20m before the monarch could be let off the hook, added that the family members were anxious to have him back in good condition.
The monarch was kidnapped last Thursday from his palace by six gunmen, who scaled the fence, shot indiscriminately and ransacked the palace before they whisked Oba Oyewumi away.
One of the sources said, “The kidnappers contacted the family around 7pm on Saturday and demanded that we pay the sum of N20m for the king to be released. They called with Kabiyesi’s phone and the phone has been switched off since then.

Kano Pillars’ new high-profile signing, Ahmed Musa, is set to miss over 80 per cent of the team’s away matches as the second stanza of the Nigeria Professional Football League begins April 28.
The announcement of the Super Eagles captain as Pillars’ new signing elicited excitement among fans of the domestic league, but Punch correspondent learnt that the former Leicester City forward told the club’s management in clear terms that he would not be available for away games.
Chairman of the club Surajo Yahaya confirmed that although the player would be available for every home fixture, he would not be part of most of their away games.
“Ahmed Musa is a big player and at the moment we know the economic situation of the country and the bad roads in some regions. He is going to honour all our home matches and if there is an available flight in the state we have an away game, then he is going to attend,” Yahaya told The Punch.
“He did not say that he’s totally going to be unavailable for our games on the road, but he is going to attend those matches by flight, but for the games that are close by, like a game at Katsina or Bauchi, he is ready to go. But we need to provide good facilities for him,” Yahaya added.
With the revelation, Musa is expected to make his debut for Pillars on May 5, when the Sai Masu Gida welcome Enyimba. He’ll miss the team’s next two games against Warri Wolves and Plateau United.

Superstar Beyonce's fans are convinced she's edited her latest Instagram offering after they pointed out some warped-looking stairs in the background.
The 39-year-old singer has been very active on her social media page in recent days, which her 172 million followers have been excited about.
However, some people suggested Beyonce's latest snap had been altered ever so slightly, as the stairs to the right of her tiny waist appeared to look manipulated, suggesting she has cinched in her physique.
In the comments section, one person wrote: "Those look like stairs in some type of stadium....."
Another asked: "How do you make a phone selfie look like it was taken by a professional cameraman?" suggesting she had tweaked the stunning image.
And another put it down to her lighting and angles, adding: "All you need is good lighting and shoot with the main camera preferably a new model iPhone like the 12 pro or a galaxy s21 ultra and you'll get the same results."
But a third person defended the star, writing: "You have to be Beyonce."
And other fans of the songstress were begging her to upload some more glamorous snaps to continue with her Instagram spree, with one asking: "Where's the rest of the pics?!"

The TRACE spokesman urged motorists to avoid speeding, especially during the rainy season, and not to use a mobile phone while driving.
Israel ended its outdoor mask mandate Sunday, now that about 80 percent of its adult population has received both doses of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine, reports said.
“Being without a mask for the first time in a long time feels weird. But it’s a very good weird,” Amitai Hallgarten, 19, told Reuters.
“If I need to be masked indoors to finish with this, I’ll do everything I can.”
At the start of the pandemic last year, Israel required residents to wear face coverings while they were outside as long as they weren’t exercising. But now that close to 5 million people in Israel have received the two-dose vaccine, health officials are starting to ease restrictions, Reuters reported.
“The rate of infection in Israel is very low thanks to the successful vaccine campaign in Israel, and therefore it is possible to ease [restrictions],” Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said in a statement.
In January, Israel was grappling with about 10,000 new infections a day but amid a surge of vaccinations, that number has dropped to about 200 daily and hospitalizations and deaths are nearly non-existent, France 24 reports.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have also be quoted as saying; “We are leading the world right now when it comes to emerging from the coronavirus.”
