One dies, four nabbed during fight in Ajah

One person was killed and many were injured as hoodlums engaged one another in a fight that lasted more than an hour on Wednesday in the Badore area of Ajah in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos.

Punch Metro gathered that the victim was killed when he lost grip of a moving car and fell to the ground, while one of the rear tyres of the vehicle crushed him.

An eyewitness, Tunde Ajala, said the fight started around 1.38am following a heated argument between two friends, who had sang at a night club.

He added that security men, who became indignant with the attitude of the two friends, pushed them out of the club.

Ajala stated that one of the evicted friends, identified simply as Nejo, rushed to his car, fetched a machete and struck at his friend’s head.

According to him, as Nejo was trying to drive out of the area, his injured friend grabbed the steering wheel and struggled with the driver.

After some minutes, Nejo’s friend was said to have become weak and fell off the vehicle. One of the rear tyres crushed him and he died on the spot.

The eyewitness stated that his death incensed the hoodlums around, who chased after Nejo and engaged his men in a fight, which resulted in many getting injured.

Ajala said, “There is a guy popularly known as Nejo; he and his friend were in a club singing with a guy called AZ. I can’t really tell what happened between both of them while they were singing, but they later had a heated argument. The security men at the club pushed them out after attempts to mediate in the dispute failed.

“When Nejo came out of the club, he brought out a machete and cut the other one in his head. As he was about to drive off, the victim grabbed the steering wheel to prevent him from escaping; Nejo then applied force and drove him violently on the road.”

Punch Metro learnt that the Divisional Police Officer of the Lamgbasa Police Station, Adaobi Okafor, mobilised her men to the area to quell the trouble.

It was gathered that four hoodlums, who tried to prevent the police from carrying out their duties, were arrested.

Women's heads are shaved in India for resisting rape

Two people have been arrested in India's Bihar state after a group of men shaved the heads of two women as "punishment" for resisting rape.

The group, which included a local official, ambushed the mother and daughter in their home with the intent of raping them, police said.

When the women resisted, they assaulted them, shaved their heads and paraded them through the village.

Police say they are searching for five others involved in the incident.

"We were beaten with sticks very badly. I have injuries all over my body and my daughter also has some injuries," the mother told the ANI news agency.

The women also said that their heads were shaved in front of the entire village.

"Some men entered the victims' home and tried to molest the daughter," a police officer told local media, adding that her mother helped her fight off the men.

The state's women commission has also condemned the incident, saying that "further action" will be taken.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the state.

Fake French doctor who killed his family to cover up for his lies is freed

A Frenchman who killed his parents, wife and children in a case that inspired a book and two films has been freed after 26 years in jail.

Before the murders, Jean-Claude Romand, now 65, spent 18 years pretending to be a medical student and then a researcher at the World Health Organization (WHO).

He was in fact making money by taking cash from family friends and claiming to invest them in Switzerland.

He went on a killing spree in 1993 as his fraud was about to be exposed.

Romand - who was widely regarded as a model student - failed to turn up for his first-year exam at the Lyon medical school in 1974.

He was allowed to repeat the first year for the next 12 years and never took the exam.

However he told his friends that he was following normal medical studies, and eventually that he had become a doctor.

He went on to pretend that he had got a job at the Geneva-based WHO. In fact he was spending his days driving near the border area between France and Switzerland, and occasionally visited the WHO's public information service.

In 1980 he married his girlfriend, and went on to have two children with her in the late-1980s. He would sometimes tell his family that he was on foreign trips, then stay in motorway rest areas for several days, and return home with gifts.

First Romand lived off money from the sale of the student flat his parents had bought for him in Lyon. When this ran out, he took advantage of relatives and friends who asked him to invest their savings in schemes he claimed to have access to as a UN employee.

By late 1992 some of his victims were asking for their money. One family friend became suspicious after finding that Romand's name was not on the WHO's staff list.

In January 1993, he killed his wife with a rolling pin at their home before killing his seven-year-old daughter and five-year-old son with a rifle.

On the same day, he travelled more than 80km (50 miles) to his parents' house and killed both of them, as well as their dog. He returned home, where his wife and children lay dead, set fire to the house and swallowed sleeping pills.

However Romand was rescued by firefighters, taken into custody, and made a confession. He was convicted of murder in 1996.

He became eligible for parole in 2015 and his release was granted in April this year. NONSENSE.

Ethiopia arrests 250 in massive crackdown

Nearly 250 people have been arrested in Ethiopia’s capital and the main city in its Amhara region since a coup attempt was foiled, state TV reported on Thursday.

Ethiopia has been on edge since twin attacks at the weekend in Addis Ababa and the city of Bahir Dar killed the army chief of staff, the region’s president and three other senior officials.

The violence, which the government says was part of a plot by a rogue general and his militia to take over Amhara, exposed how ethnic tensions are threatening the reform agenda of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation did not give any more details on who was arrested or when. But a party based in the northern region – the National Movement of Amhara (NAMA)- earlier said 56 of its members had been detained in Addis Ababa on Wednesday.

Two women say E Jean Carroll told them about Trump alleged sexual assault

Two women have publicly said columnist E. Jean Carroll confided in them after Donald Trump allegedly raped her in the 1990s.

Carol Martin and Lisa Birnbach at the time disagreed on whether Ms Carroll should call the police, the New York Times newspaper reports.

President Trump denies the allegation, saying Ms Carroll is "totally lying" and "she's not my type".

Ms Carroll, 75, is the 16th woman to accuse Mr Trump of sexual misconduct.

Mr Trump, 73, has rejected all allegations against him.

Ms Martin, a TV news anchor in 1975-95, and Ms Birnbach, a writer, spoke publicly for the first time about the alleged sexual assault on the New York Times podcast The Daily.

Ms Carroll, the Elle columnist, said in the same podcast she had called Ms Birnbach straight after the alleged assault, telling her that Mr Trump had forced himself on her.

Ms Birnbach responded by saying she thought it was rape, urging Ms Carroll to call the police.

"Let's go to the police. I'll take you to the police" Ms Birnbach said, but added that her friend refused.

Ms Carroll described what had happened between her and Mr Trump as a "fight", not "a crime".

She also told the podcast she felt that she had encouraged Mr Trump's behaviour. Asked whether she felt responsibility for what happened, she said: "One hundred percent."

Ms Carroll said two or three days later she also told Ms Martin about the alleged assault.

Ms Martin advised against calling the police, saying Mr Trump was a powerful men with numerous lawyers.

"I said: Don't tell anybody. I wouldn't tell anybody this," Ms Martin is quoted as saying in the podcast.

E. Jean Carroll said it happened at a Bergdorf Goodman store in New York's Manhattan in late 1995 or early 1996, when the pair bumped into each other while shopping.

iPhone designer Jony Ive to leave Apple

Sir Jonathan, designer of the iMac, iPod and iPhone, leaves later this year to start a creative firm, LoveFrom, with Apple as its first client.

"This just seems like a natural and gentle time to make this change," he said.

Apple boss Tim Cook said his "role in Apple's revival cannot be overstated".

But the departure comes at a time of wider change at the tech giant. Retail chief Angela Ahrendts left in April and investors have been worried about falling iPhone sales.

Sir Jonathan said in a statement: "After nearly 30 years and countless projects, I am most proud of the lasting work we have done to create a design team, process and culture at Apple that is without peer."

Little is known about LoveFrom, but it will be based in California and there are reports one area of focus will be wearable technology. News of his departure broke in an exclusive interview in the Financial Times.

Genoa bridge: Towers demolished after residents are evacuated (photos)

Thousands of people were evacuated ahead of explosions which brought down two large towers consisting of about 4,500 tonnes of concrete and steel.

Water tanks were placed around the towers to prevent the spread of dust.

Forty-three people were killed when part of the bridge, and cars travelling along it, fell 45m (148ft) last August.

It prompted a fierce debate about the safety of Italy's infrastructure.

The Morandi bridge was a critical structure in Genoa, serving the busy A10 motorway network that serves the Italian Riviera and links northern Italy to France.

Hundreds of residents, including pregnant women and the elderly, were told to leave on Thursday ahead of the demolition.

More than 3,400 others were being evacuated on Friday morning from the areas surrounding the two towers in preparation for the operation.

Roads within a 300m (984ft) radius of the demolition site were set to close.

Explosives were attached to the legs of the towers and the parts of the bridge still standing.

Minutes before the explosions, sirens rang out and water began to spray the structure from tanks all around the base.

Then within eight seconds the towers were gone.

29 bandits, two army officers, one policeman die in gun battle in Zamfara

No fewer than 29 bandits have been killed by operatives of Operation Hadarin Daji in an onslaught carried out by the troops in Moriki forest of Zamfara.

The Public Relations Officers of the operation, Lt. Oni Orisun confirmed this in Gusau on Thursday.

He said that the troops moved against the bandits after they failed to embrace the 24-hour ultimatum issued by the Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Jide Ogunlade for them to surrender and embrace peace.

“The Force Commander was clear and did not mince words when he said the operation will land heavily on them after the expiration of the ultimatum.

“The Moriki general area was professionally cordoned and offered no escape route which led to the bandits returning fire against our operatives.

“That action led to two soldiers and one mobile policeman paying the supreme price with their dear lives.

“The death of the three saddened all the operatives especially the Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Jide Ogunlade, who however expressed determination, confidence and ability of the operation to fully contain banditry in the state,” Orisun said.

Ex-Minister, Lai Mohammed to appear in court over N2.5bn NBC case

Lai Mohammed, the immediate past Minister of Information and Culture has been scheduled to appear before a Federal High Court, Abuja, to explain his role in the alleged misapplication of N2.5 billion Federal Government Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme.

The planned appearance of Lai was revealed by the Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), who is prosecuting the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Ishaq Kawu, over an alleged abuse of office and money laundering.

The ICPC said this in a post on its website on Thursday.

The anti-graft body had filed a 12-count charge before Justice Folashade Ogunbanjo-Giwa, against Mr Kawu, Lucky Omoluwa and Dipo Onifade, the Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Pinnacle Communications Limited respectively, saying that the NBC director general misled the former minister into approving government funds to a private company.

The former minister’s involvement had come under questioning following discovery by ICPC during investigations, that a government White Paper that governs the execution of the DSO programme, was allegedly flouted by the head of NBC.

Mr Mohammed had however admitted in a statement to the Commission that he was misled by Kawu, as opined in court by a witness from ICPC, Osanato Olugbemi.

Mr Olugbemi, led in evidence by counsel to ICPC, Henry Emore, also told the court that the payment of N2.5 billion from NBC to Pinnacle Communications Limited, as seed grant was suspicious because ICPC found out through its investigations that only government owned company was approved to benefit from the grant according to the White Paper.

The court also heard that the processes that led to the final payment of the fund to the private company were shrouded in secrecy as revealed by the minute from an NBC emergency board management meeting where issues of carriage fees owed Pinnacle and not seed grant was discussed.

Internet is gradually returning to Ethiopia

People in Ethiopia are now able to access the internet through a wifi connection but mobile phone data is still not available.

Internet access was blocked in the wake of what the authorities say was an attempted coup in northern Amhara state on Saturday. Five top officials died as a result of the violence, including army chief Seare Mekonnen. The alleged ringleader Brig Gen Asaminew Tsige was killed on Monday.

The extended internet outage was the second time this month that Ethiopians have been unable to go online.

Earlier, there was an eight-day internet shutdown coinciding with national school exams, though the reason for the blackout was never explained.

Internet World Stats estimates that 15% of Ethiopians have online access.

Facebook Zuckerberg admits 'mistake' in handling of Pelosi clip

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg said the firm took too long to flag a doctored video of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, describing it as an "execution mistake".

The firm was criticised for not taking down the altered clip which made Ms Pelosi appear incoherent.

Mr Zuckerberg also addressed the firm's wider struggle with "deepfake" videos.

Made by AI software, deepfakes use photos of a person to create a video of them in action.

The controversy surrounding the clip of Ms Pelosi erupted in May when Facebook said it would not remove the doctored video that had been slowed and made the US politician appear to slur.

One version of the clip has been viewed more than 2.5 million times.

Speaking at a conference in the US, Mr Zuckerberg said the social media giant took too long to remove the video.

"One of the issues in the example of the Pelosi video... which was an execution mistake on our side, was it took a while for our systems to flag that and for fact-checkers to rate it as false," he said.

Mr Zuckerberg said there was a case for considering deepfakes as different from traditional misinformation, adding that it was necessary to proceed cautiously so as not to compromise freedom of speech.

"I think that what we want to be doing is improving execution, but I do not think we want to go so far towards saying that a private company prevents you from saying something that it thinks is factually incorrect to another person.

"That to me just feels like it's too far and goes away from the tradition of free expression."

When you think about s3x and food, suicide vanishes, plus sized actress, Monalisa Stephen tells depressed people

While experts are yet to proffer lasting solution to the rate at which youths and adults commit suicide lately in Nigeria, plus sized Nollywood actress, Monalisa Stephen has proffered a solution.

According to the curvy actress, depressed people considering suicide as an option only need to think of two things, s3x and food, and they would probably change their minds on committing suicide.

“Are you depressed and want to commit suicide? Wait a minute, just wait. Think about food and s3x; oh my God, they are so sweet to just let go like that. No o, we die here o”, she suggested.

Monalisa who on account of her size and physique get several overtures from the opposite s3x advised men to quit seeing fat girls as s3x objects. “Some of you see fat girls and you have nothing for them but to see them as a s3xual object to warm you; that’s wrong. Fat girls are just human. Do not see them as a s3x object or fetish. Some of you will even come and say “send me your nude”, nude kill you there. If you really want a woman, then love her for whom and what she is, not trying to get to her so you can experience the rubbish fantasy you have in your head. Don’t tell me you want a fat girl or you love fat girls. Good for you, it’s none of my business. I’m not your play thing, I’m just a normal girl”, she blurted.

Egypt striker Amr Warda kicked out of AFCON over ‘sexual messages’ to Instagram model, other women

Egypt star Amr Warda has been thrown out of their Africa Cup of Nations squad amid allegations of s3xual harassment towards a string of women.

Warda, a team-mate of Liverpool ace Mo Salah, came on as substitute in the host nation's opening game victory over Zimbabwe last week.

But hours before the country's second game was due to be played he was removed from the squad by the national football association.

An Egyptian-British model had gone public with what she claimed were inappropriate and aggressive messages sent to her on Instagram and WhatsApp.

Merhan Keller then went on to back up her own claims about being targeted by the 25-year-old with messages she said came from other women who had suffered similar treatment.

On Twitter, screenshots of messages and videos supposedly sent to women by Warda were shared - leading to the allegations becoming a major story in Egypt.

And after growing calls for the Egyptian FA to take action, they announced that Warda was no longer part of their squad.

Because of the nature of his exclusion, Egypt are unable to call up a replacement so will have to see out the remainder of the tournament with 22 players.
