Kaduna schoolgirls parents speak, reveals Ex-Governor's role, give shocking details

Three days after their release, parents of the kidnapped Kaduna schoolgirls have disclosed that they paid ransom to the abductors before their children were released.

Even as they refused to disclose the amount paid to the kidnappers, the parents who addressed a press conference to appreciate Nigerians and those who played roles in their children’s safe release said, they paid the ransom on instalments.

The six female students and two staff of the Engravers College, Kakau Daji in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State were kidnapped by armed kidnappers within the school premises in the first week of October.

The parents while speaking on Tuesday said, their children were set free by their abductors after meeting the ransom demanded by them.

Spokesman of the parents, Engr. Ohemu Fredrick disclosed that, a former Governor of the state who neither knew them or ever met them raised money alongside his friends, for them to pay the kidnappers.

He also said the former Governor also rendered the children and the two staff free medical treatment aside from providing the victims ambulance that conveyed them.

Corroborating the story, one of the parents told newsmen shortly after briefing that the police merely gave their children and the two staff ride after the kidnappers had set them free.

He explained that after the kidnappers had set them (the children and the two staff) the police merely picked up the children and dropped them near the Kaduna tollgate, about 5kilometre away from the city centre.

“We thanked them (police) for giving the children and the two staff a ride.

“What happened was that when the children and the two staff were released, they had no shoes or footwear’s on them. So, out of the ransom paid, the kidnappers gave the victims transport money to come back to the town. It was out of that money that the principal crossed over to the other side of the road to buy footwears(slippers) for the victims. It was at that point that police arrived and offered to give the victims lift.

“Even the first time we paid part of the ransom, the kidnappers also gave the ransom bearer transport fare back to town. So, we really appreciate the police for giving our children and the staff lift.”

The parents, however, recounted that the girls and their teachers were really tortured by the kidnappers. “The children and the two staff really suffered while in the hands of their abductors. They tortured them each time they called us so that we could hear them.

They, however, expressed appreciation to all Nigerians, the former Governor and all who played roles to get their daughters released.

Woman plunged 60ft to death from waterfall after touching moment with boyfriend

A woman plunged 60ft to her death moments after sharing a touching moment with her boyfriend atop a waterfall in the Peak District, an inquest heard.

Seconds before she fell, Hannah Lowe and her partner were chatting about how happy they were and excited at the prospect of buying their first house together the next day.

The 29 year-old was an experienced hill walker and climber and had taken on the challenges of some of Britain's biggest mountains with her family and boyfriend Adam Stanaway.

But on Easter Monday this year - the day before Adam's 30th birthday - the pair decided on a relaxing walk in the Peak District with Hannah's mother and sister and set out from the village of Edale just after noon.

After three hours they reached the top of Kinder Scout and shared a picnic with Hannah's family before wandering off for a few precious moments alone.

The pair sat at the top of the Kinder Downfall and spoke about their future and of their dreams of building a home together, but as they got up to leave Hannah slipped and plunged to the foot of the waterfall.

In a statement read to Chesterfield Coroner's Court Adam relived the horrifying moment the women he loved fell from his grasp as he tried to save her from the terrifying drop.

"We went for a little wander and sat on some rocks," he said.

"We were both very happy as we were buying our first house the next day, which was also my 30th birthday.

"We were only there a few minutes, then we got up to go.

"Hannah turned around and lost her footing on the rocks. I reached around to grab her bag but I couldn't grab it in time and she fell.

"I looked, but I could not see her because my eyes are not that good.

"I shouted for Hannah's mother and she came over. We tried to get down but had to go back up."

Thirty minutes later he was told the devastating news that Hannah was dead.

Buhari’s photographer, Bayo Omoboriowo renovates Ekiti school

The Chief Official Photographer to the President, Bayo Omoboriowo, in appreciation of God’s blessings, has started giving back to the society.

His state governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, has inaugurated some blocks of classrooms renovated and equipped by Omoboriowo at Ijero High School in Ekiti State.

The ceremony was attended by first class traditional rulers, community and political leaders in the state.

Speaking with newsmen on the occasion, Omoboriowo said he was compelled to give back to the society, especially students, because God had favoured him by giving him the privilege to work with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Apart from the massive renovation he carried out through his Bayo Omoboriowo Foundation in Ijero High School, he empowered students in his hometown with 1000 fully loaded school bags and writing materials.

“Bayo Omoboriowo Foundation was birthed as a response to one man’s unwavering desire to continually seek improvements in the general well-being of not just himself, but his immediate environment and society at large,” he said.

Fayemi, who is also the chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), called on all indigenes of the state to emulate the philanthropic gestures of Omoboriowo.

He also urged those who are well to do in the state to join hands with his administration to develop Ekiti, adding that the task of development could not be left to the government alone.

Fayemi said: “This state belongs to all of us. You know what they say about a village bringing up a child and taking a community to build a state.

“So, what Bayo (Omoboriowo) has done is exemplary and I think that other public-spirited Ekiti sons and daughters, Ekiti residents, Ekiti lovers should also consider and do within their own various areas of jurisdiction.

“Bayo is not a school teacher, but he was brought up by teachers and that is why he felt he needed to give back and went to Kabiyesi to discuss the possibility of giving back to schools in the society.

“Look at what he has done. I encourage all Ekiti indigenes, wherever they may be based, you don’t even have to have gone to school in Ekiti; those who have even gone to school in Ekiti are even more compelled to do so.

“I see a lot of alumni associations doing that; they are all contributing their quota. But individuals can also adopt a school.”

Obaseki, Oshiomhole continue their 'war' in Edo state

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said that his predecessor and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole has lost political grip on the state, but now resorts to deploying police operatives from Abuja to harass his aides.

The Governor, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, added that Oshiomhole’s intent was an “attempt to plunge the state into chaos and cause panic in [his] camp.”

He stated this in response to the arrest of his security adviser, Andrew Momodu, over the weekend by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) with the intent of whisking him to Abuja.

Osagie’s statement had alleged that Mr. Momodu was arrested in a gestapo style.

According to him, “When Momodu resisted the unlawful arrest by the security agents, he was taken to the Police Headquarters in Benin, where he was held for an extended period until the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu intervened.”

“Investigations revealed that the security from Abuja have orders from above to pick up not less than 50 persons loyal to Obaseki, in an attempt to plunge the state into chaos and cause panic in the governor’s camp.

“Those penciled down for arrest, according to sources privy to the policemen’s modus operandi, including Special Adviser (SA) to the Governor on Political Matters, Edo South, Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha.

“Others on the list are Albert Obazee, Kelly Okungbowa (popularly known as Ebo Stone) and Muktar-Osagie Muntari, who heads the state’s Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV).”

Obaseki and Oshiomhole have been at loggerheads over who controls the structure of the party in the state.

Thai king fires royal guards for adultery

Thailand's king sacked 4 royal guards, two of them for "adultery," in a fresh wave of palace purges a week after his royal consort was stripped of all titles for "disloyalty."

Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 67, ordered the dismissal of two male guards from the "bedroom section", the Royal Gazette announced late Tuesday, October 29.

"They have committed inappropriate acts and adultery," the statement said.

The other two officers failed to meet the standards of the royal guard and were dismissed without compensation, according to the gazette.

Thailand's royal family is protected by a defamation law that makes scrutiny of its actions all but impossible within the kingdom.

But the purges have offered a rare glimpse into the powerful palace, one of the wealthiest monarchies in the world.

The latest move comes after 34-year-old royal consort Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi was deprived of all royal titles 3 months after being appointed to the role for the first time in nearly a century.

She was accused of disloyalty and "acting against the appointment" of Queen Suthida.

Vajiralongkorn married Suthida, his fourth wife, earlier this year.

The former consort Sineenat has not been seen in public since her dismissal.

FG moves to regulate social media space again, combat fake news, hate speech

The Federal Government says it is working on how to inject sanity into the social media space which, according to it, is totally out of control today.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed said the social media at present constituted real danger to the unity of the country.

“What goes on social media is so ridiculous and we will contain it,” information minister Lai said.

He said since the government launched its reform of the broadcast industry, many Nigerians have reached out to it demanding that it also looked into sanitising the social media space.

“I can assure you that we are also working on how to inject sanity into the social media space which, today is totally out of control,” he stated.

The minister emphasised that contrary to insinuations, the government had no intention of muzzling the media or stifling free speech, saying the campaign was against fake news and hate speech.

He said only those engaged in disseminating fake news or hate speech needed to be worried because they would not be spared.

“We cannot allow fake news and hate speech to become free speech because these Siamese twins of evil are capable of inflicting untold damage on our democracy and are threatening our national unity.

They represent a clear and imminent danger to our survival as a nation,” Lai said.

He assured that the planned social media regulation would be in line with international best practices as obtainable in Singapore, the United Kingdom and other countries.

“No responsible government will sit by and allow fake news and hate speech to dominate its media space because of the capacity of this menace to exploit our national fault lines to set us against each other and trigger a national conflagration. That is why we will continue to evolve ways to tackle fake news and hate speech until we banish both,” he stated.

Caitlyn Jenner cruelly mocked on SNL ahead of 70th birthday celebrations

Caitlyn Jenner was cruelly used as the butt of a joke on Saturday Night Live, the night before she celebrated her 70th birthday.

SNL comedian Michael Che used a joke about Kanye West to take a dig at Caitlyn’s identity during the ‘Weekend Update’ segment.

He said: “At first I thought Kanye was losing his mind… and now I feel like he’s fine, he’s just turning into an old white lady.”

The comedian continued: “I mean, he used to be one of the coolest black dudes on earth.

"Now he’s showing up to events in sweatpants and orthopaedic sneakers, listening to Kenny G and trying to get black people to like Trump. It’s like how long until this guy changes his name to Kathy?”

He added: “Now you might think I’m crazy, but about five years ago, there was a fella named Bruce Jenner, and he moved to Calabasas…”

The attempt at humour immediately fell flat with the audience, many of whom groaned loudly and audibly said “noooo”.

Taking to Twitter , one outraged viewer wrote: “Michael Che just deadnamed and misgendered Caitlyn Jenner on air for a joke. The joke? Implying Kanye West is trans. F**kin hell mate.”

Another tweeted the show directly, saying: “Transphobia isn’t funny”.

Former Lagos Governor, Ambode Sues Lagos Assembly, Court Summons Speaker

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Tuesday ordered the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa to appear before it in connection with the ongoing probe of procurement of 820 buses by the administration of former Governor of the State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.

According to PM News, the former Governor had instituted a suit against the Assembly to contest the constitutionality of the probe of the buses which were procured based on budgetary approval as part of the Bus Reform Project of the State Government designed to revolutionize public transportation in line with global best practices.

In an order dated 29th October, 2019 issued by Justice Y.A Adesanya after hearing a motion ex-parte moved by Ambode’s lawyer, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), other defendants ordered to appear before the court at my 9am on Wednesday October 30 are House Clerk, Mr A.A Sanni; Chairman of the Ad hoc Committee set up by the House to probe the procurement, Fatai Mojeed and members of the Committee. They are Gbolahan Yishawu, A.A Yusuff, Yinka Ogundimu, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, M.L Makinde, Kehinde Joseph, T.A Adewale and O.S Afinni.

Justice Adesanya ordered the originating processes and all the accompanying processes filed by the claimant (Ambode) to be served on the defendants and subsequently fixed Wednesday October 30, 2019 for hearing of motion for interlocutory injunction.

According to his statement of claim before the court, Ambode said contrary to deliberate misrepresentation of facts by the lawmakers, the procurement of the 820 buses was well captured in the 2018 Appropriation Law which was duly approved by the House.

“In section 1 of the Bill, the 1st Defendant (House of Assembly) authorized the total Budget for the year 2018 to be One Trillion, Forty Six Billion, One Hundred and Twenty One Million, One Hundred and Eighty-One Thousand, Six Hundred and Eighty Naira (N1,046,121,181,680.00) comprising the sum of Three Hundred and Forty Seven Billion, Thirty-Eighty Million, Nine Hundred and Thirty-Eight Thousand, Eight-Hundred and Seventy-Two Naira (N347,038,938,872.00) only and Six Hundred and Ninety-Nine Billion, Eighty-Two Million, Two Hundred and Forty-Two Thousand, Eight Hundred and Eighty Naira (N699,082,242,808.00) only as the Recurrent and Capital Expenditures respectively.

“Part of the items authorized by the Bill under Capital Expenditure was: “LAGBUS Public Transport Infrastructure (MEPB); Part financing of 820 buses” which was item 8 under schedule 1- Part C of the Bill,” the former Governor averred.

He added that having prescribed the manner of withdrawal of funds in sections 3 and 4 of the 2018 Appropriation Law, it was unconstitutional for the House to attach another condition in section 9 of the law for further approval to be sought before incurring any expenditure on the purchase of the buses.

Highlighting the specific breach of his constitutional rights to fair hearing by the House, the former Governor said on August 27, 2019 during proceedings of the Assembly, some lawmakers thoroughly vilified and disparaged him as having purchased the buses without budgetary approval and that the procurement was a waste of public funds, while at the end of the proceedings, the House resolved to constitute an Ad Hoc Committee to probe the procurement.

He said it was surprising that the very lawmakers who contributed actively in vilifying, disparaging and denigrating him constituted the bulk of the members of the Committee, which was a clear derogation of his right to fair hearing.

Ambode added that in continuation of deliberate misrepresentation of facts of the issue, the House falsely claimed that an invitation had been extended to him to appear before the Committee but that he failed to honour the said invitation.

“On Thursday 10th October, 2019, the 4th and 5th Defendants (Mojeed and Yishawu) who are Chairman and member of the Committee respectively set up by the 1st Defendant pursuant to the provisions of section 129 of the Constitution again raised on the floor of the House an allegation that the Claimant (Ambode) was invited to appear before the Committee but that he failed to do so whereupon the 2nd Defendant (Speaker) ruled that a warrant of arrest would be issued against the Claimant if he refuses to appear before the Committee.

“The Claimant states that no letter of invitation was delivered to him before the 4th and 5th Defendants made the false allegation against the Claimant which was widely reported by various national Newspapers in the country.

“Further to the foregoing paragraphs, the 1st Defendant had also invited some of the former Commissioners who served under my Government to appear before the 1st Defendant on Tuesday 15th October 2019. These included former Commissioners for Energy, Agriculture and Economic Planning and Budget respectively amongst others.

“After the proceedings of the Committee on 15th October 2019, the 1st Defendant represented to the public that the former Commissioners that appeared before it had indicted me in their testimonies. The information was widely published by National newspapers on Wednesday 16th October 2019.

“Contrary to the information made to the public by the 1st Defendant, the said former Commissioners for Energy and Economic Planning and Budget who were represented by the 1st Defendant to have indicted me, made public statements on Thursday 17th October 2019 denying that they ever indicted me in their testimonies before the Committee. The denials were widely published by online newspapers on Thursday 17th October 2019 and national newspapers on Friday 18th October 2019.

“The 1st Defendant falsely represented to the public that the said Commissioners indicted me in their testimonies before the Committee so as to justify my indictment by the 1st Defendant which indictment members of the 1st Defendant had hitherto threatened to carry out,” Ambode averred.

He added that the House Committee and indeed the entire members of the House had already adjudged him as having committed wastage of public fund by the procurement of the buses in question and had also already determined that the procurement was done by him as opposed to the State Government.

He said it was obvious that the lawmakers were totally biased against him having regard to their pronouncements on the floor of the House by reason of which he believes that his right to fair hearing as guaranteed by the Constitution had been seriously compromised by the defendants.

He is, therefore, seeking among others, the court’s declaration that the power of the House to pass a resolution under section 128(1) of the Constitution to cause an inquiry into his conduct as Governor is subject to right to fair hearing as guaranteed by section 36(1) of the Constitution.

He also wants a declaration that the Resolution of the House setting up a 9-Man Committee comprising of the 4th-12th Defendants to investigate all transactions in respect of the 820 Buses said by the defendants to have been procured by him derogates from his right as guaranteed by section 36(1) of the Constitution and therefore is unconstitutional, null and void.

Other claims are: “A DECLARATION that having regard to the provisions of sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Appropriation Law of Lagos State 2018, sections 8 and 9 of the Law which required the approval of the House of Assembly of Lagos State before certain expenditure of money is incurred by the Executive Branch of the State is not in accord with any provision of the Constitution and accordingly is unconstitutional, null and void.

“A DECLARATION that it is not lawful for the Defendants to represent or continue to represent to the Public that the Claimant, AKINWUNMI AMBODE, procured 820 buses in breach of budgetary approval.

“A DECLARATION that the powers of the 1st Defendant under sections 103, 128 and 129 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended does not include power to indict the Claimant as contemplated by sections 66(1)(h), 137(1)i and 182(1)i of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended.

“AN INJUNCTION restraining the Defendants whether by themselves, their servants, agents and or representatives from compelling the Claimant, in any manner whatsoever, to appear before the Defendants pursuant to the Resolution passed by the Defendants on 27th August 2019 or any other Resolution passed in respect of the subject matter of this Suit.

“AN INJUNCTION restraining the Defendants whether by themselves, their servants, agents and or representatives from representing or continue to represent to the Public that the Claimant, AKINWUNMI AMBODE, procured 820 buses in breach of budgetary approval.”

Davido’s Guys Wrong For Parading Ladies Over Pregnancy Prank — Police

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, has faulted Edward Ijah, the sidekick of popular musician, Davido, for handcuffing and parading the two women who accused Davido of impregnating one of them.

Davido’s hype man, known as Special Spesh, had posted a video on Instagram showing the two women, Helen and Susan, handcuffed and sitting on a chair in a living room.

Spesh could be heard telling one of the ladies to lift up her head or get a slap in the face.

He subsequently told them they were in trouble for “deformation (sic) of character.”

Davido also posted a smiley in the comment section, laughing over the treatment meted out to the women.

Speaking with The Punch on Tuesday, however, the police spokesman said it was wrong of Davido and his team to take the law into their own hands.

Elkana said a citizen has the right to arrest another person and hand over to the police immediately. He said no citizen had the right to parade another citizen.

Elkana noted that a popular rich man, Onye Eze, was arrested earlier in the year for arresting a popular blogger, Blessing Okoro, who had taken photos of his house, claiming ownership of the property.

The police spokesman said, “Even if someone defamed your character, you are to hand over the person to the police immediately but to parade them is wrong. The person being paraded has the right to sue. Private citizens have no right to parade another person.

“Not all policemen even have the power to parade suspects. You cannot be a judge in your own case. If he feels aggrieved, he should lodge a complaint and not go to effect an arrest. He cannot conclude the guilt of another person. There must be an investigation and only a court can pronounce them guilty.”

The two women had last week accused Davido of being responsible for impregnating one of them and the report went viral on social media.

Davido subsequently offered N1m to anyone who could fish out the girls. They were arrested on Tuesday and paraded by the musician’s sidekick.

He said: “I have been around the football circles and I have never seen such investment. This will equip the upcoming players with skills and education.
