Wreckage of Kobe Bryant’s helicopter removed from scene

The remains of the Sikorsky S-76B that crashed into a foggy hillside, killing Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others, have been removed from the scene of the disaster.

The last of the victims’ bodies also were recovered Tuesday in suburban Calabasas, near Los Angeles, where the chopper went down Sunday.

Investigators airlifted the helicopter’s wreckage onto trucks, which then transported it to a secure location for further examination.

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva earlier this week warned that it would be a “misdemeanor for anyone to unlawfully access the crash site,” as deputies patrolled the debris-strewn ground to ward off anyone wishing to pick up remnants from the tragic flight.

Meanwhile, medical examiners have formally identified the bodies of Bryant, 41, pilot Ara Zobayan, 50, John Altobelli, 56, and Sarah Chester, 45, using fingerprints, officials said.

Also killed, but not formally identified, were Bryant’s daughter Gianna, 13; Chester’s daughter, Payton, 13; Altobelli’s wife, Keri, and daughter Alyssa; and Christina Mauser, 38, a girls’ basketball coach at a Southern California elementary school.

“We are done on the site,” Jennifer Homendy, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, said Tuesday in announcing that the feds handed the scene, spanning an area larger than a football field of “about 500 and 600 feet,” over to local authorities.

An iPad, cellphone and maintenance records were recovered among the wreckage, along with “everything we would expect would be on the aircraft,” she said.

She added that the probable cause for the accident may not be confirmed for 12 to 18 months, when a final report will be issued. A preliminary, fact-based report is expected in about 10 days.

Police forced me to strip to prove that I’m a woman - Kenyan female bus conductor

A Kenyan female bus conductor who has a beard has shared how she was stripped naked in a police cell to confirm her gender.

Theresia Mumbi told BBC Swahili that traffic police in the capital, Nairobi, arrested her and held in a cell with other women.

“Two officers came and told me to take off my clothes. They then examined me. I’m not sure what they saw but they told me to return to my cell,” she said.

She says that the July 2018 arrest over identification documents is still fresh in her mind. She presented her documents and was let go.

Ms Mumbi’s experience made her an advocate for women with unusual features and now she tells her story to create awareness and encourage others to speak out when harassed.

Ms Mumbi was diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance that resulted to her having a beard.

As a young woman she had to shave her beard often until her skin got irritated by the frequent shaving.

“Some years back I had to suspend shaving at some point because my skin was becoming irritable and the stubborn sores were a problem,” she said.

The beard grew and she started hiding from people opting to shop at night.

Pushed by the hard economic times she became a bus conductor to earn a living.

While at work she meets women with unique conditions and encourages them.

She is part of an association of bearded women in Kenya and during their meetings she speaks to the younger women.

Kobe Bryant’s wife changes Instagram profile picture

Kobe Bryant’s wife Vanessa has made her Instagram account public for the first time since the LA Lakers star’s tragic death alongside their daughter Gianna.

The NBA legend died on Sunday (26 January) aged 41 in a helicopter crash that also killed 13-year-old Gianna and seven other people in Calabasas, California.

Vanessa, 37, has yet to address her heartbreaking loss publicly, but she appears to have acknowledged the deaths by changing her profile picture to one of Kobe and Gianna together.

In the sweet image, Kobe is seen smiling down at Gianna who has her arms flung around the basketball star. It was taken at the NBA All-Star Game in Toronto, Canada back in 2016.

Gianna was Kobe and Vanessa’s second child, as they also share daughters Natalia, 17, Bianka, three, and seven-month-old Capri.

Vanessa’s return to Instagram comes after a source revealed she is ‘trying to be the strong one’ for her daughters while grieving the tragic deaths. An insider told People: ‘It’s an extremely difficult and devastating time for Vanessa and the whole family.

Edo 2020: Obaseki threatens to expel Oshiomhole

Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki has threatened to expel the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) if he (Oshiomhole) continues to “disrupt activities” in the state and in the Edo APC.

Obaseki handed down the threat when he attended a meeting of the 18 APC local government Chairmen in the state where he also directed the party chairmen to seriously deal with any persons or group carrying out activities outside what the party hierarchy has agreed to do.

This threat is on the heels of a rally held last weekend in Auchi, Etsako West local government area where thousands of people from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defected to the APC.

But the governor through one of the aides, Osaigbovo Iyoha declared the rally as illegal saying there is a ban on political rallies in the state.

German tourist who booked hotel room with Kenyan girlfriend found dead with cuts in head

Police are looking for a youthful woman suspected of killing her 78-year-old German lover in a hotel room in Malindi, Kilifi County, Kenya on Monday night.

The deceased has been identified as Detering Herman, a tourist of passport number C3K6FV281.

Herman booked himself into a room at Moriema Cottages in Malindi in the company of his alleged girlfriend identified only as Mary, a Kenyan citizen, on Monday night.

Kelly Kazungu, a receptionist at the accommodation facility, told police that he grew suspicious when Herman failed to wake up the whole day.

At 7:30pm Tuesday, Kazungu went to Herman’s room — 177 — and peeped through the window and saw Herman lying on a bed, whose sheets were stained with blood.

Kazungu said upon opening the door to Herman’s room, he found him dead with cuts and scratch marks in the face, back and neck. It is suspected that Mary strangled Herman after getting into a fight with him.

The scratch marks, authorities suspect, were inflicted by Mary using her nails.

Police were called to the scene and took Herman’s body to Malindi Sub-County Hospital morgue, where an autopsy is set to be conducted to ascertain Herman’s cause of death.

Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, ‘can’t finish a sentence without crying’- Pals

Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, is struggling to “keep it together” and “can’t finish a sentence without crying,” family friends say.

The pals told People magazine that the NBA legend’s 37-year-old widow is surrounded by “a good support system” — but “you can never be prepared for this.”

“Despite their ups and downs, [the couple] were soulmates. She thought of him as her partner for life,” a source said of Vanessa and Kobe, who was killed along with their 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others in a helicopter crash near Calabasas, California, on Sunday morning.

Vanessa is “devastated. She can hardly keep it together,’’ the source said. “She can’t finish a sentence without crying. But she is working very hard to pull it together for the other girls. She now has to be the strong one.”

Vanessa has three surviving daughters with Kobe: Natalia, 17, Bianka, 3, and Capri, 7 months.

Kobe’s wife “is surrounded by people who love her and love Kobe,” the source added. “She has a good support system. She is relying on her faith. She is not alone.

“But she will be grieving this for a very long time.”

A family friend added, “It’s an extremely difficult and devastating time for Vanessa and the whole family.”

Kobe’s surviving daughters are reeling, too, the sources said.

“He had a special bond with each of them,’’ another friend said of Kobe and his kids.

He was “so proud to see [them] take after not only him and Vanessa but also grow into their own.”

The former LA Lakers star said in a November interview that “being a father is the thing I am most proud of in this world; it’s my greatest accomplishment.”

“I’ve learned so much, but perhaps the most profound thing has been the fierce, unconditional love you have for your children when you become a parent,” he said.

Kobe and Vanessa married in 2001, when she was just 18 and he was 22.

Putin pardons US-Israeli woman jailed in Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has pardoned a dual US-Israeli national who was arrested on charges of drug trafficking last year.

Naama Issachar, 26, was detained in Moscow in April 2019 after more than nine grams of marijuana were found in her luggage.

She was later sentenced to more than seven years in prison.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked his "friend" Mr Putin for the decision to pardon Issachar.

President Reuven Rivlin also expressed his gratitude to the Russian leader "for the wisdom and mercy of the decision".

Israeli media have reported that the Israeli government was willing to relinquish ownership of a complex in Jerusalem - symbolic to the Russian Orthodox Church - as a goodwill gesture ahead of Issachar's release.

Ownership of the Alexander Courtyard, which lies in Jerusalem's Old City near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, has been disputed for decades, but an Israeli court recently ruled in Russia's favour.

Naama Issachar was returning from a trip to India when she was detained.

Her case gained widespread attention in Israel, with local media accusing Moscow of using it to pressure Israel over a jailed Russian hacker, whose extradition was requested by both the US and Russian governments.

France to ban culling of unwanted male chicks by end of 2021

France has pledged to outlaw the practice of culling unwanted male chicks by the end of 2021, as part of animal welfare reforms.

About seven billion male chicks - not wanted for meat or eggs - are killed around the world each year, usually in shredding machines or by gas.

The government said new methods were emerging that would make it possible to test the sex of embryos inside the egg.

But some campaigners said the reforms did not go far enough.

French Agriculture Minister Didier Guillaume announced the reforms at a press conference in Paris on Tuesday.

"From the end of 2021, nothing will be like it was before," he said.

Paul Pogba desperate to return for Man Utd after "terrible" injury-hit season

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is "desperate" to play again - after having his ankle cast removed following surgery earlier this month.

That is according to Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who failed to give a date for the French World Cup winner's return from injury.

The 26-year-old has made only eight appearances in all competitions this season having been sidelined for three months earlier in the campaign before deciding to undergo surgery.

"Paul's had a terrible season with injuries, he's desperate to play football," Solskjaer said ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City, where they will look to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit.

“If there's one thing that I know about Paul, he loves playing football and he loves just being out there training as well, and it's been playing on his mind.

“Any player who is injured cannot wait to get back on the pitch, you feel so free. He's been playing with pain, so I'm sure when he's pain-free and he's injury-free, he'll enjoy his football.”

And, in another boost for United, Bruno Fernandes is flying into Manchester on Wednesday to complete his move to Old Trafford.

Senate Minority Leader calls for Buhari’s resignation

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Senate Minority Leader, has faulted President Buhari following the rising insecurity in the country, asking the president to resign immediately.

Abaribe who is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the call when the Senate discussed a motion on national security challenges and the need to restructure Nigeria’s security system during plenary today Wednesday, January 29th.

Reporter reinstated after Kobe Bryant tweet row

The Washington Post has reinstated a reporter who tweeted about historic sexual allegations against Kobe Bryant soon after his death.

Felicia Sonmez posted a link to a 2016 article about the allegations, and received death threats online.

She was later suspended over the tweets - prompting hundreds of her colleagues to condemn the paper.

Managing editor Tracy Grant called the posts "ill-timed", but said they did not break the paper's policies.

"We consistently urge restraint, which is particularly important when there are tragic deaths," her statement read. "We regret having spoken publicly about a personnel matter."

More than 300 Washington Post employees signed a letter in support of Ms Sonmez on Tuesday, including Pulitzer Prize winners David Fahrenthold and Beth Reinhard, and White House Bureau Chief Philip Rucker.

The Washington Post Guild welcomed the decision to reinstate the reporter, although said it was "disappointed" that the paper did not apologise to Sonmez and said the company should prioritise staff safety in the future.

And Sonmez herself called on chief editor Marty Baron to explain why the paper handled the issue as it did, and stressed that she had tweeted about "a matter of public record".

Sonmez tweeted a 2016 Daily Beast story about the rape allegations against Kobe Bryant just hours after the basketball legend died in a helicopter crash that killed nine people - including his 13-year-old daughter Gianna.

Bayelsa workers protest non-payment of salary, minimum wage

Workers in Bayelsa state have staged a mass protest over non-payment of December 2019 salary and minimum wage from January 2020 salary by blocking the entrance of the treasury building in Yenagoa.

The workers said their anger is that they fear that the outgoing Governor Seriake Dickson who will vacate off on February 14 may deliberately be footdragging to leave the salary arrears to the incoming administration led for the first time in 21 years by an opposition political party.

After 20 years of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, grip on the governance of the state since the dawn of democracy in 1999, the All Progressives Congress, APC, will form a government with David Lyon as the elected Governor.

Also, according to them, the protest was as a result of non-payment of December to salaries some workers and non-payment of the new minimum wage in January 2020 as promised by the state Government.

The Chairman of Trade Union Congress, TUC, Comrade Julius Laye, and Chairman Joint Negotiating Council, Olomo Dimei, while explaining their ordeal to journalists in Yenagoa and at the venue of the protest, demanded the state government pays their salaries as when due and implement the minimum wage like other states in the country.

On his part, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, John Idiomu, said the address of the Secretary to the State Government to Labour leaders on the reason for the non-payment of workers salaries was not pleasing to the workers; stressing they will only leave the premises if their January salaries are paid.
