There were seven bullets put in my son’s back, says Blake’s father as protesters march in Kenosha

With chants of “One person, one vote!” and “No justice, no peace!” a crowd of about 1,000 demonstrators gathered outside a Wisconsin courthouse Saturday to denounce police violence and share messages of change, a week after an officer shot Jacob Blake in the back and left the 29-year-old Black man paralyzed.

The diverse group of protesters also chanted “Seven bullets, seven days!” — a reference to the number of times Blake was shot last Sunday — as they marched toward the courthouse in Kenosha. There, Blake’s father, Jacob Blake Sr., gave an impassioned call for changing a system he described as fostering police brutality and racial inequities.

“There were seven bullets put in my son’s back. … Hell yeah, I’m mad,” said Blake Sr. He said he wants to ask the police “what gave them the right to attempted murder on my child? What gave them the right to think that my son was an animal? What gave them the right to take something that was not theirs? I’m tired of this.”

Kenosha Police Officer Rusten Sheskey and two other officers were responding to a domestic dispute call last Sunday when Sheskey shot Blake in the back. Blake Sr. told reporters on Saturday that his son is heavily sedated, but he has regained consciousness.

“He’s in a lot of pain,” he said. “I just wish I could pick my baby up and make it all right.” He called for Sheskey to be charged and for the other two officers at the scene to be fired.

Several of Saturday’s speakers encouraged the crowd to vote for change in November, and to push for changing legislation in Wisconsin that would lead to police reform.

“Justice is a bare minimum,” Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes said. “Justice should be guaranteed to everybody in this country.”

Blake Sr. asked those at the rally to raise their fists with him. “We are not going to stop going in the right direction. We’re going to the top … we’re gonna make legislation happen because that’s the only thing that they recognize,” he said.

Blake Sr. also referred to the May 25 death of George Floyd, a handcuffed Black man who died after a Minneapolis officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck. Said Blake Sr., “We all have a knee on the back of our necks, every day.”

One of Blake’s sisters, Letetra Widman, said she felt recharged “to stand up not just for Jacob, but for all the people who have not gotten justice.”

Captured on cellphone video, the shooting sparked new protests against racial injustice and police brutality months after Floyd’s death touched off a wider reckoning on race.

Protesters have marched in Kenosha every night since Blake’s shooting, with some protests devolving into unrest with damage to buildings and vehicles. On Tuesday, two people were killed by an armed civilian. The commander of the National Guard said Friday that more than 1,000 Guard members had been deployed to help keep the peace, with more on the way.

Most people dispersed from the protest on Saturday before a 7 p.m. curfew. More than an hour after curfew, law enforcement officers, including some wearing U.S. Marshals Service identification, surrounded about a dozen people gathered outside of the Kenosha County Courthouse and made several arrests.

President Donald Trump will visit Kenosha on Tuesday to meet with law enforcement and survey damage from recent demonstrations that turned violent, White House spokesman Judd Deere told reporters traveling with the president Saturday night. Trump, who toured hurricane-ravaged areas of Louisiana and Texas earlier Saturday, had told reporters that he “probably” would visit the city.

Asked to weigh in on Tuesday’s shootings in which 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse was charged, Trump demurred and said “it’s under investigation” and that “we are looking at it very, very carefully.”

Aniyah Ervin, a 16-year-old from Kenosha who is Black, said Saturday that the week has been surreal. Although she protested against racial injustice over the summer, she said there had been a feeling that police brutality was not a problem in Kenosha. But, she said, Blake’s shooting “shows it can happen anywhere.”

Will Turner, who is Black, said he brought his two children from Madison for the march to “show them the power of peaceful protesting.”

Investigators have said little about what led to Blake’s shooting. The Kenosha police union said Blake had a knife and fought with officers, putting one of them in a headlock as two efforts to stun him with a Taser were unsuccessful. State investigators have said only that officers found a knife on the floor of the car.

In the cellphone video recorded by a bystander, Blake walks from the sidewalk around the front of an SUV to his driver-side door as officers follow him with their guns drawn and shout at him. As Blake opens the door and leans into the SUV, an officer grabs his shirt from behind and opens fire. Three of Blake’s children were in the vehicle.

The man who recorded the video, 22-year-old Raysean White, said he heard police yell at Blake, “Drop the knife! Drop the knife!” before gunfire erupted. White said he didn’t see a knife in Blake’s hands.

Primary, Secondary schools to re-open 21 September in Lagos

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered full resumption of tertiary institutions across Lagos State on Monday, September 14, after about six months shutdown occasioned by the outbreak of ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.

Sanwo-Olu, however, fixed a tentative resumption date for primary and secondary schools on September 21.

As part of precautionary measures to stop the spread of COVID-19, the governor had, on March 19, ordered the closure of all public and private schools from Monday, March 23.

The governor made the remarks, yesterday, giving the 17th update on coronavirus situation in the state at Lagos House, Marina.

Sanwo-Olu recalled that on Monday August 24, 2020, the state Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, announced that he had tested positive for the virus. “I am pleased to note that Prof Abayomi is doing well and in high spirits, and even in isolation continues to discharge his duties as Health Commissioner and Deputy Incident Commander”, he said.

“Yesterday marked six months since the first case of coronavirus was recorded in Nigeria, from a traveler who landed in Lagos from Europe. Since then the situation in Nigeria has progressed from travel-related infections to the community transmission stage, bringing with it, significant disruptions and changes to the way we live, socialize, worship and work.”

I will lay hands on COVID-19 patient & they will recover – Oyedepo

Presiding Bishop, Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo has said he would lay hand on any Coronavirus patient brought to him for prayer.

He said he would not wear gloves to do so but would lay his bare hands on the patient to receive healing.

Oyedepo, who spoke at the church’s Covenant Hour of Prayer, CHoP, said Christians must be listed among the people God had vowed to honour this year.

“August is almost gone. We are in the 9th hour as it were, we are going to step into the 11th hour shortly: it is not late, you can connect.

“COVID-19 cannot be any reason why your own ‘Breaking Limit’ package will not be delivered. It’s not a tenable reason. No circumstance on earth will make the covenant of God of no effect.

“You can imagine a medical doctor, going back there to minister to coronavirus patients (documented testimony). He found something, while others are scared by everything they can see.

“Can you imagine anyone bringing coronavirus patient to me and I won’t lay hands on him? Will I wear gloves to lay hands on them? I will lay hands on them; breathe into them; embrace them. What you carry is eternal life, it’s not human life. You should know that,” he said.

According to Oyedepo, “You’ll now wear everything like a doctor, you have never been in a theatre in your life. You will be moving like somebody is under some attack.

“Someday, they will know that they have been deceived. They will all know that they have been grossly deceived.

You’ve covered your mouth: do you cover it when you want to eat or there is no coronavirus when you are eating?

I just look at it and say, “what is all this?”

“It’s all the devil trying to dehumanize humanity. Don’t go near old people, yet you are buying food from them!

Do you ask somebody of her age when you want to buy food: “Hello Mama, what’s your age?” Age of what? Get out, my friend. I am selling something and you’re asking my age.

“The world will be free. I have a Liberation Mandate to this generation: my job is to see human beings set free from all harassment of the devil. Enough is Enough! Receive grace to constantly celebrate the Word of God; to embrace the Word of God by putting it to work in faith.”

26 year-old man kills his married lover, 28, and her child after catching the woman in bed with his roommate

Police in Kagera Region, Tanzania have arrested a 26-year-old man accused of killing his 28-year-old lover and her daughter.

Derick Dambuve killed the two after his lover, Helda Amon, who had carried her child to Derick’s place, engaged in sexual intercourse with Derick’s roommate identified as Kajere Ibrahim.

Kagera regional police boss, Revocatus Malimi, told Tanzanian news outlet, Global Publishers, that the incident occurred at the suspect’s home in Mukoma Village in Ngara District, Northwest Tanzania last Saturday, August 22.

Police say Derick’s lover, Helda, had gone to Mukoma village for open market day, when she and the suspect met.

“Helda, a married woman, had carried her daughter, Gladness, with her to the market. Later that day, she went into a bar, where she met Derick,” said Malimi, the Kagera regional police boss.

“The two liked each other, and Helda agreed to accompany Derick to his home for the night. Derick, who is a mason, still had some work to complete. As a result, he asked his friend, identified as Alex Gray, to take Helda to his (Alex’s) home, where he (Derick) would later pick her from.

“Before leaving for work, Derick bought Helda and Alex alcohol. Later that evening, Alex took Helda to Derick’s house believing he (Derick) had already returned home from work.

“However, Helda found Derick’s door locked, and was, as a result, forced to wait outside.”

The police boss said while Helda was waiting for Derick to return home, his roommate, Kajere, arrived and ushered the mother-and-child into the house.

“Kajere seduced Helda. Shortly after knowing each other, the two engaged in sexual intercourse. The incident happened in Derick’s house. As they were still immersed in intimacy, Derick arrived unannounced, catching the two in bed.

“Kajere managed to escape, leaving Helda and her daughter behind. An enraged Derick picked all manner of crude weapons and struck Helda on different parts of her body. Eventually, Derick picked a barbell (weight lifting equipment) and smashed it against Helda’s chest, killing her on the spot.

“Derick killed Helda as her daughter, Gladness, watched. The child, who is below five years, began crying on seeing her mother lying motionless in a pool of blood. A livid Derick picked the same weight lifting equipment he’d just used to kill Helda, and smashed it against the child, killing her instantly.

Derick is being held in lawful custody at a Kagera police station. He will, upon completion of investigations, be charged with causing the deaths of Helda and her child.

Electronic giant LG creates battery-powered face mask

LG Electronics has unveiled a new face mask that includes built-in fans and filters to create what the company is calling a “wearable air purifier”.

The battery-powered mask includes two H13 HEPA filters, similar to those used in home air purifying products, as well as dual fans and a patented respiratory sensor to adjust the fan speed in line with the wearer’s breathing speed.

Called the PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier, LG says the device allows the user to breathe clean air both indoors and outside.

The battery can last up to eight hours on a single charge, and the device comes with a case that houses UV-LED lights that kill germs between uses, while the case can also send alerts to an LG app to notify the user when the air filters need to be replaced.

LG said the mask could help solve the problem of homemade masks being of inconsistent quality and disposable masks being in short supply.

The Korean tech giant is to officially reveal the mask during the IFA technology trade show in Berlin next week, which is going ahead both virtually and in a much-reduced capacity in person.

The company has not yet confirmed the price or release date for the mask.

Yola hospital separates twins joined around the abdomen at birth

Specialist doctors at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, have separated two children who were born joined around the abdomen as Siamese twins.

The twins who are both girls and now aged eight months, were born at the Nembe General Hospital in Bayelsa State on December 12, 2019 and were immediately referred to the FMC Yenagoa where they were, in turn, referred to the FMC Yola.

The twins had been flown by the Nigeria Air Force to Yola in January this year but the surgery to remove them was not done till earlier this month.

The FMC Yola Medical Director, Prof Auwal Abubakar, who spoke to newsmen on Saturday during a farewell for the twins and their parents, said the surgery was finally done on August 10.

“We were getting set to do the surgery when COVID-19 came. It was a new disease and we were learning to cope with it. Many services at the hospital were suspended and even to get certain consumables was difficult…

“The separation was done on the 10th of August and there was no problem at all. We discharged them from intensive care on the third day. They are fully okay,” said Prof Auwal who led the team for the surgery.

He said it took only three hours for a 48-member team comprising specialist surgeons, anesthetics consultants, nurses, technicians, among others, to do the surgery.

“Aided by experience and sophisticated machines, some recently donated by the Nigeria Liquefied Gas Ltd (LNG), we successfully completed the process in just three hours,” he said.

The newly-separated twins are named Grace and Mercy respectively. Their mother, 25-year-old Mrs Ayebaekipreye Ebi, told newsmen that the twins were born through cesarean section and that the complexity of their birth shattered her and her husband, Ralph Raphael, 27.

“My immediate reaction was ‘why me’ and I passed out and remained unconscious for three days,” Mrs Ralph said.

She expressed the gratitude of her family to the FMC Yola for keeping and feeding them these past eight months that they had been on admission and for the August 10 surgery, all done for free.

Vacate your houses, NEMA tells Anambra residents in flood prone areas

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned residents of Anambra in flood plains and low lands near the River Niger and its tributaries to relocate.

The South-East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Fred Anusim, gave the warning on Saturday in Enugu.

The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had earlier predicted torrential rains in September in 28 states of the country.

NIHSA early this week specifically noted that there had been disturbing growing level of water in the River Niger.

Giving the warning on Saturday, Anusim said: “Some communities in the South-East have started feeling the impact of the increasing water and gradual flooding, especially those in Anambra State.

“So, we are advising these communities, particularly those within natural flood-plains and low lands and those communities close to River Niger and its tributaries, to relocate to safe high-lands.

“They should please evacuate while they can salvage some of their belongings and even crops they had planted in order to reduce damages and avoidable destruction.

“This is the call and warning we are issuing at this moment as a proactive disaster management agency,’’ he said.

Anusim said that before now, NEMA had met and sensitised various State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) in the South-East to provide safe high-lands that people could relocate to temporarily.

“ NEMA will do the needful of supplying relief materials to the people in their various Internally Displaced People(IDP) camps in the states.

“The IDPs will return back to their homes after the rains and predated flood season is over to continue their daily human and business endeavours.

“The Federal Government through NEMA wants to ensure that there is minimal human and property losses this year as it is expected that all obey the expert advice from NIHSA and NIMET,’’ he added.

Anambra has successively been flooded annually as the River Niger and its tributaries run through the state.

JK Rowling to return award over ‘transphobic tweets' criticism

“Harry Potter” author JK Rowling on Friday said that she would give back an award bestowed upon her by the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization after one of its members criticised her views on gender issues.

The Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organisation presented Rowling with its Ripple of Hope award in December 2019.

But the group’s president, Kerry Kennedy, the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, said this month that the Rowling’s outspoken views on gender “diminished the identity” of trans people.

Rowling, in a statement on her website said: “Kerry Kennedy recently felt it necessary to publish a statement denouncing my views.

“The statement incorrectly implied that I was transphobic, and that I am responsible for harm to trans people,” she added. “I absolutely refute the accusation.

“In solidarity with those who have contacted me but who are struggling to make their voices heard, and because of the very serious conflict of views between myself and RFKHR, I feel I have no option but to return the Ripple of Hope Award.”

Rowling sparked controversy in June for picking on the use of the phrase “people who menstruate” instead of women in an article on menstrual health.

Quoting a reference in the article to “people who menstruate”, she tweeted:

“I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

It led to a string of denunciations, including from the actor Daniel Radcliffe, who played Potter in the blockbuster film franchise, and other actors who starred in the series.

Rowling had earlier expressed support for a woman who had lost her job over what her employer deemed to be “transphobic” tweets.

Rowling said “accusations and threats from trans activists have been bubbling in my Twitter timeline” ever since but she had also been “overwhelmed” by private messages of support.

She said the “toxicity” around the discussion was damaging and frightening for people within and outside the trans community.

“I’ve been particularly struck by the stories of brave detransitioned young women who’ve risked the opprobrium of activists by speaking up about a movement they say has harmed them,” she said on Friday.

“I’ve been forced to the unhappy conclusion that an ethical and medical scandal is brewing.”

Rowling’s comments are the latest controversy surrounding her work. In some parts of the world, they have been banned for being linked to witchcraft and the occult.

17 killed, 28 injured in China restaurant collapse

At least 17 people died on Saturday when a restaurant in northern China collapsed, state media said, with rescuers pulling dozens of survivors from the rubble and searching for others believed to be trapped.

The two-storey building used for banquets came down in the morning in Xiangfen county, in Shanxi province, according to broadcaster CGTN.

Xinhua news agency reported that “45 people have been brought out, of which 17 were dead, seven seriously injured and 21 slightly injured.”

Rescuers in orange overalls and hard hats combed the crumbled ruin of the building, images on the CGTN website showed, with a decorative painting seen on one of the few walls still intact.

Seven hundred people were involved in the rescue operation, CGTN said.

While the cause of the disaster was not immediately clear, China is no stranger to building collapses and deadly construction accidents.

They are typically blamed on the country’s rapid growth leading to corner-cutting by builders and the widespread flouting of safety rules.
