Yahaya Bello under investigation by EFCC over alleged fraud
In a letter signed by the EFCC’s Director of Operations, Abdulkarim Chukkol, and seen by Peoples Gazette, the anti-graft agency said it received a petition filed against Mr Bello and certain officials of his government.
A non-governmental organisation, Anti-Corruption Network, on March 1, filed the petition against the governor, on claims that it uncovered huge financial fraud carried out in the state.
In a copy of the petition shared on Twitter by former Kogi senator, Dino Melaye, the organisation detailed the allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption by Mr Bello, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor was said to have awarded contracts to non-legal persons, even so without due process.
According to Mr Melaye, the petition was also submitted to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), U.S. embassy, British High Commission and Transparency International.
A part of the petition read: “We have meticulously investigated and uncovered huge financial fraud carried out by Kogi State Government, the Governor of Kogi State and his Cohorts from 2016 – 2019, ranging from award of contracts to non-legal persons, award of contracts without due process, circumvention of procurement procedures, suspicious payments made without specific breakdown, money laundering, borrowing from non-capital market, fraudulent loan, and many others.”
The organisation further urged the new EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, to use his “good office and cause a further investigation on this matter and bring the perpetrators to book.”
The EFCC, in the letter dated March 26, summoned the group for an interview on March 31 at its headquarters in Abuja.

NDLEA intercepts N2,000,000,000 drugs at Lagos airport
The Head of the MMIA Command of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Garba, said the suspected trafficker, Bright Aniede, was arrested on Sunday, March 28, 2021, during the outward clearance of passengers on Air Marroc.
He alleged that Aniede concealed 7.1 kilogrammes of Methamphetamine in food spices, packed in a Swiss polo suitcase.
Garba, in a statement, said the illicit substance was bound for Spain with a street value of over N2bn.
“Unarguably, the closure of borders occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic is responsible for the surge in the price of these drugs. For instance, the price of meth in Australia has increased from $200 to $600 per gramme due to supply cuts, hence the desperation by the traffickers and barons alike,” he added.

PDP attacks APC over ''N25tn missing fund'', demands probe
A statement by the party’s spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, said it was clear that corruption was on the increase under President Muhammadu Buhari.
Part of the statement reads, “Our nation has again been jolted by reports in the public space that a whooping N9.6tn ($20 bn) and another N500bn belonging to the Treasury Single Account (TSA), have been reportedly missing and allegedly diverted to APC interests.
“This fresh N10.1trn scandal is beside the earlier N15 trn, reportedly stolen by APC leaders from various government agencies, including the stealing of N9.3tn as detailed in the leaked NNPC memo, bringing the sum looted in these cases to N25.1tn.
“It indeed speaks volumes that while the Buhari Presidency is claiming that it has no funds to finance the 2021 budget of N13.08tn, a humongous N10.1trn belonging to the nation is said to have disappeared into the thin air.
“The PDP expresses concerns over the level of rapacious looting by the APC leaders and the cabal in the Buhari Presidency, stressing that, it is clear that our nation has been seized by ferocious economic brigands in very high places.”
The party demanded investigation into the missing fund
“The PDP invites Nigerians to unite in demanding for the recovery of the N25tn, which our party insists should be directed to critical sectors of youth development, job creation, infrastructural development and security,” the statement added.

World powers have ramped up their condemnation of the military’s campaign against the anti-coup movement that is demanding the restoration of the elected government and the release of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Washington suspended a trade pact with Myanmar and UN chief Antonio Guterres called for a united global front to pressure the junta after more than 100 protesters were killed in a bloody weekend.
Adding to that pressure campaign, a trio of ethnic rebel groups on Tuesday condemned the crackdown and threatened to fight alongside protesters unless the military reined in its violence.
Daily rallies across Myanmar by unarmed demonstrators have been met with tear gas, rubber bullets and live rounds.
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said it had confirmed a total of 510 civilian deaths but warned the true toll was probably significantly higher.
On Tuesday, protesters in Yangon emptied rubbish bags in the streets as part of the latest action.
Rebel warning
Three of the country’s myriad armed ethnic rebel groups — the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, the Myanmar Nationalities Democratic Alliance Army and the Arakan Army (AA) — issued a joint statement threatening retaliation.
“If they do not stop, and continue to kill the people, we will cooperate with the protesters and fight back,” the statement said.
If rebel groups take up arms, Debbie Stothard at the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) warned that the situation could degenerate towards civil war.

Oyakhilome SLAMS Pastors asking church members to take covid-19 vaccine
In a sermon delivered which was shared on his church’s YouTube channel, Oyakhilome lamented how ministers of the gospel became ministers of the vaccine.
According to him, pastors should channel the belief they have in the vaccine to the word of God which made them healers.
He said, “I can’t understand how a minister of the gospel would be waiting for some vaccine to be the solution for the world. Where is your faith? What happened to you?
“We cannot make such recommendations, it is not our calling to make such recommendations. We cannot be used for that. As a minister of the gospel, you should not be used for that.
“How can you become of minister of vaccines? What happened to you? Where is the word of God in your mouth?
“Do you realise that if you would believe in Christ and in the word of God the way you believe in this vaccine, there will be power in your mouth? He (God) made us healers.”
The clergyman lamented how pastors have now forgotten about the God they serve to the point of leading God’s people into a belief in vaccines.
“What is wrong? What has happened to you? When did we start making that kind of recommendations to God’s people?
“For God sake, think again. How can they send us to the churches to tell them to go take the vaccine?
“Listen, if I say to someone, you shall live and not die, that’s it for him. Isn’t that the Bible that you read?
“Where is your God of Elijah, your God of Moses? Where is your God of Peter, James and John? What is the matter with you?” he asked.

So Professional footballer, Marcus Rashford has publicly declared his love for African Giant Burna Boy, saying the singer is his favourite Afrobeat artiste.
In a question and answer session on Twitter with his fans, the Manchester United‘s forward answered some random questions.
And one included a follower asking Rashford about his choice of music genre; if he fancies the popular Afrobeat genre, and if he does, he should state who his favourite is.

Gunmen kill PDP chieftain in Niger, abduct his wife
It was gathered that the gunmen invaded Ishaya’s residence on Sunday night in New Bwari Community and stabbed him in the stomach with a knife before shooting him at in close range.
Family sources informed journalists on Monday in Minna, the state capital that the gunmen had gained entrance into the house by using a ladder to scale the fence.
People around the community said it was only the house of the political leader that was attacked by the fleeing gunmen.
A PDP chieftain who would not want his name in the print confirmed that “he was stabbed in the stomach and shot to make sure that he was dead.”
The PDP chieftain noted that the attack was not a random attack, adding that the PDP in the state was seeing it as an assassination.
The family members and PDP members in the state said that they were yet to hear from the abductors of the bereaved wife of the deceased.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Niger State Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun said the police had commenced investigation into the matter.

Buhari to spend two weeks in London for medical check-up
Presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina in a statement Monday night said the president will travel on Tuesday and will return in about a fortnight.
Mr Buhari and members of his immediate family routinely travel for medical treatment in the UK as Nigerian hospitals battle with inadequate equipment and inadequate funding.
The president’s latest trip was announced on the same day residents doctors across the country announced they would commence an indefinite strike on Thursday due to nonpayment of some allowances.

Sergio Aguero to leave Manchester City at end of season
Aguero has played 10 seasons at Manchester City and became the all-time goal scorer for the club.
As at November 3, 2020, he has scored 180 goals for Manchester City, the highest by a single player in the club’s history.

25 year-old woman dies of electric shock after her phone fell in bath while charging
The Russian woman was charging her phone when she was electrocuted at her home in Novosibirsk, say reports.
She had previously worked as an aide to a local MP.
The tragedy follows warnings from the Russian authorities and police following a succession of deaths from electric shock by young people using phones in baths.
“She took a bath before going to sleep, and had her smartphone with her,” said a report citing law enforcement.
“It was almost out of charge, so she used a power cable, so as not to be apart with the smartphone even when taking a bath.
“She dropped the phone and was electrocuted.
"She died instantly.”
Police are understood to be investigating the circumstances of her death.

Tinubu, who is rumoured to be nursing a Presidential ambition, also made a veiled reference to the marriage of the daughter of Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje; to the son of the late ex-Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, which took place in Kano in 2018.
He said this showed the unity between people of different ethnic groups.
Tinubu therefore faulted secessionists groups’ agitations.
The APC leader said, “Why are we in Kano? It is to demonstrate to Nigerians at this critical time. It is because there is a Fulani man, a herder (man) who gave his daughter to a farmer, (a) Yoruba man… and some people are agitating wrongly.”
The former governor said he was therefore encouraged to mark his birthday in Kano.
He also argued that if Nigeria breaks into smaller countries, he would not have been able to visit Kano without a visa.
Tinubu stated, “I was encouraged to go and spend a couple of days with my brother and in-law in Kano and demonstrate that he has not quarrelled with me, he has not seceded from Nigeria, I didn’t need a passport or visa to get to Kano, maybe others will have peace of conscience, live in peace and harmony and be loving to one another. That is what Ganduje and I are showing to Nigerians and that is the purpose of this colloquium end of story.”
The former governor further said, “All of you here should thank Ganduje for what we have been able to show Nigerians together. That a Fulani man and a Yoruba man can show the entire nation that in harmony, we can show Nigerians that perseverance creates understanding. It is a common blood that flows through our veins.”

The arrest was sequel to credible intelligence obtained by the Commission on their alleged criminal activities.
The suspects are: Akpotegho Profit, 20; Aseimo Prince, 21; Ekhaguere Favour,19; Ekhaguere Esewi, 25; Kelvin Ekhaguere, 25; Temola Adex,25; Ezuzu Happiness, 21and Ekhiyokwo Emmanuel, 25.
Others are Mena Ejife Emmanuel, 25; Clement Ifietekhai, 29; Babatunde Ilori, 35; Ejoor Joseph, 22; Okunuwe Frank Durkio, 22; Agbaga Kelvin, 22; Ajayi Kehinde David, 25; Akinwale Taiwo, 30; Joseph Henry Junior, 25 and Agbaje Opeyemi, 31.
A statement on Monday, by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, titled, ‘’18 suspected Internet fraudsters arrested in Abuja, three in Niger,’ said items recovered from the suspects include six exotic cars, 26 mobile phones,11 laptop computers, flash and hard drive, three international passports, and six handbags.

15 dead as boat carrying wedding guests capsizes in Guinea
The group had been travelling to a wedding on an island near Kanfarande when their boat capsized, said a naval officer stationed in Boke, a city some 50 kilometres (30 miles) to the east.
The officer added that an unknown number of people had been aboard the boat, with the navy brought out 15 bodies from the ocean on Monday.
“We can’t tell you how many people are still in the water,” he told AFP.
An official at Kanfarande town hall who gave his name only as Rica said the authorities do not yet know how many are missing.
“We are in shock,” he said.

Iwobi’s COVID-19 test result is fake – Rohr
Rohr said that the midfielder will be fielded against Lesotho on Tuesday in the last match of the AFCON qualifiers.
Recall that Nigeria booked their place in Cameroon even before the kick off of the match against Benin Republic on Saturday following the goalless draw in an earlier game between Lesotho and Sierra Leone.
Iwobi, who was listed in Rohr’s XI for the game against Squirrels was withdrawn before filing out after he was said to have tested positive for COVID-19.
And on Monday, Colin Udoh, ESPN journalist, tweeted that, “Gernot Rohr has told me that although Everton’s Alex Iwobi tested positive for COVID-19 on arrival in Benin, he believes the result is “fake”.
“A second test has been taken and result due soon. Rohr tells me he’s confident Iwobi will play on Tuesday”.
