It was learnt that she was previously married to another man, with whom she had two children.
The incident, which threw the residents of Bedi community into mourning, was said to have happened around 8pm on January 27, 2019.
Narrating the incident to newsmen, Maikudi said he was still in shock and did not believe that his wife could go to the extent of taking her own life.
He said, “I got a call from a neighbour that my wife wanted me to return home, because she was not feeling well. When I got home, I met her in intense labour pains, so I decided to call a traditional birth attendant to assist her with the delivery, but my wife insisted that I should ask her younger sister, who lives nearby, to attend to her.
“So, I went to look for her younger sister, who followed me to the house. On getting inside the room, her sister shouted and when I entered the room, I saw my wife in a pool of blood with her stomach ripped open with a sharp razor blade that she used to cut her stomach, because she was in pains.
“I then sought the help of the village head, who later came to my house with some of his subjects. The village head then arranged for a vehicle to convey my wife to a nearby hospital, but we later changed our minds and took her to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Hospital, Bauchi, because it was an emergency case.
“Unfortunately for me, on getting to the hospital, my wife died. We have since buried her according to Islamic rites.”
According to a source in the village, Hassana did not associate with other women and always kept to herself.
“She was always keeping to herself and did not mingle with people. Sometimes, you would just see her talking to herself or doing abnormal things. We did not know that this would be the height of the mental problem she was suffering from,” the source stated.
The Village Head, Bedi community, Muhammad Idris, expressed grief over the incident, saying such a thing had never occurred in the area before.
