Rwanda Court Affirms It’s Illegal To Insult President
Rwanda's Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a ban on insulting the country's president. The law which was enacted in 2018 states that any citizens who will be found guilty of humiliating, abusing or using derogatory language against the president will face a jail term of between five to seven years.
The apex court noted that insulting the Head of State was tantamount to insulting the public order which was a violation of human rights and freedom of expression. Rwandan lawyer Richard Mugisha had challenged the new law arguing it curtailed the citizens' freedom of expression and ought to be repealed.
