The 17-year-old double under-20 world champion, who is sixth fastest over 100m outdoors in the world this year, was found to have the diuretic Hydrochlorothiazide in her system during competition.
Williams, who is widely considered one of the most exciting up-and-coming track and field stars, reportedly tested positive for the substance at June's Jamaican championships, where she clocked 10.94secs.
She has already qualified for the 100m at the World Championships in Doha next month and has spoken of her aim of winning Olympic gold as early as Tokyo 2020.
Her coach Ato Boldon, who won 100m silver at Sydney 2000 and tested positive for a banned stimulant in 2001 but was cleared, has blamed 'contaminated tablets'. It is understood that Williams's defence rests on her taking medication for a cold.
Boldon remains the only person to receive a statement from top American sprinter Christian Coleman about his charge for missing three drugs tests, which was revealed last week by Sportsmail.
