The chairman of the association, Dr Saidu Alhassan, said they decided to end the strike because of residents of the state.
Alhassan warned that the association would not tolerate the victimisation of any doctors owing to their participation in the strike.
He said, “The deputy governor’s panel consisting of the SSG, Head of Service and other prominent citizens of the state stepped in. We saw their commitment to our challenges. The Speaker (of the House of Assembly), the chairman of the Task Force on Health invited us to a roundtable discussion and they appealed to us to suspend the strike. In view of that, we are suspending the industrial action.”
The union chief also said they agreed to suspend the strike due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Alhassan said, “Of course there are myriads of challenges like the issue of salary, upgrade, promotion and poor working conditions. We have put that aside to consider the people of Gombe State first and decided to suspend the strike.”
