The woman, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, reportedly delivered the baby girl in her boyfriend’s room at Munachi private hostel and threw her over the fence from the first floor of the hostel to the next empty plot.
Dr. Chinonso Nwosu, a medical officer at Chukwunoso Specialist Hospital, Oko, where the new-born baby was admitted, told daily trust reporter that the baby girl was found hanging on a barb wire of a fence at one of the private student’s hostels of the polytechnic. He said though the baby has a wound on the leg where she was trapped by the barb wire, her condition was stable.
According to him, the police later arrested and brought the suspected mother of the newborn to the hospital to be breastfeeding the baby. “She was brought to the hospital in handcuffs, where she is currently breastfeeding the newborn baby,” he said.
It was further gathered that the boyfriend of the woman, who was also reportedly arrested by the police, connived with his roommate to allow his girlfriend deliver the baby in their room so as to perfect their plans of throwing the baby away.
Reacting to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Oko Polytechnic, Mr. Obini Onuchukwu, said the school authority got to hear about the incident “like every other person”, saying that the security department of the institution had been directed to get full details of the matter.
He said it was not clear if the suspect and her accomplice were students of the institution.
He added that since the incident happened in a private hostel outside the polytechnic’s environment, the school authority does not have control over students’ actions there.
The Anambra State Police spokesman, Haruna Mohammed, said they only found the story on the Internet and that the command was investigating it.
