'Reckless' world leader says vodka and saunas will protect people from coronavirus

The president of Belarus has shrugged off any concerns about coronavirus - and has urged residents to drink vodka and go to saunas.

The country has seen no restrictions or lockdowns, with sporting fixtures all being played as normal.

President Alexander Lukashenko took part in an ice hockey game over the weekend as thousands continue to fill football stadiums.

Belarusian football organisers have no plans to cancel fixtures or postpone the season, with Lukashenko claiming "sport is the best anti-virus remedy".

He added: "It's better to die standing on your feet than to live on your knees."

The 61-year-old previously said: “The world has gone mad from the coronavirus.

“This psychosis has crippled national economies almost everywhere in the world.”

In a move that will put lives at risk, he vowed to go ahead with the country's Victory Day parade on May 9 – an event which sees World War Two veterans march through the streets, Daily Star reports.

He has recently suggested that drinking 50ml of vodka, visiting saunas and working in fields can keep people safe.

According to the Belarusian Telegraph Agency, Lukashenko said: "We are not cancelling anything. We will host all the events we have planned… Let God protect us from the coronavirus."

He said he would only consider a quarantine "only when it is really needed", but did not say when this would be.

Lukashenko also voiced support for US President Donald Trump, who has said he wants businesses back open by Easter.

There have so far been 94 coronavirus cases in Belarus, but experts fear the number could rocket with authorities refusing to make any measures to stop it spreading.
