Elon Jase Ellis-Joynes was 12 days old when his family's pet dog is believed to have bit him on September 13.
The tot, from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, was still alive when mum Abigail Ellis frantically called for an ambulance, but died at the hospital.
Doncaster Coroner's Court heard Elon was "bleeding from his leg or his stomach".
It was said police are currently investigating his death and senior coroner Nicola Mundy adjourned the inquest until a later date.
A police spokesperson said the baby had suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a dog.
They said the pet, called Teddy, was removed from the address and will remain in secure kennels until the force's inquiries have been completed.
Ms Mundy said: "I want to release Elon for the purposes of a funeral to proceed.
"I am aware that there is an ongoing investigation and I adjourn this inquest until matters are investigated."
Abigail and Stephen were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence after the incident and both have been bailed pending further inquiries.
