Medical worker who stopped for lunch at a hospital cafe is disgusted after sinking his teeth into a burger with rat

A medic who stopped for lunch at a hospital cafe has received a nasty surprise after sinking his teeth into a burger to find a dead rat inside.

The staff member at Toowoomba Hospital in southeast Queensland stopped at the hospital's cafe for his break in October.

He only realised something did not taste right after he bit into the burger and then made the stomach-churning discovery of the cooked dead rat.

The man snapped a quick photo before informing staff who had served him the food at the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation-run Wellbean Co cafe.

The picture shows the bread roll, some lettuce leaves and the unmistakable rat with its tail attached.

Darling Downs Health Service, which oversees the hospital, said they were taking the incident extremely seriously.

'Our highest priority is the health and safety of our community, patients, and staff,' a spokesperson said.

'We have been assured that the Wellbean Co cafe operators, the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, comply with all food and hygiene standards.'

The spokesperson said the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation has been in contact with the supplier and has reviewed their protocols for inspecting and washing ingredients.

'The foundation has had the Toowoomba Regional Council Food Safety Division and our Public Health Unit inspect the cafe, which has been cleared to continue operating.

'The cafe has apologised to the customer and I would like to thank the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation for their immediate and proactive response to this incident.'
