Court finds Calabar man guilty of r.a.p.i.n.g his 14-year old step daughter [he's pictured]

The Family Court of the High Court Sitting in Calabar, Cross River State on Wednesday, December 3, 2020, found 47-year-old Emmanuel Thompson Udo, guilty of r3ping his 14-year-old stepdaughter.

Udo was found guilty of r3ping the minor in August, 2020 at his residence at No. 45 Afokang Street, closed to the Nigerian Prison, Afokang, Calabar South local government area of Cross River State and was remanded in the upper Correctional Service facility.

The matter was presided over by Hon. Justice E.E. Ita, Acting Chief Judge of Cross River State and presiding Judge of the Family Court.

The case was brought to the forefront, courtesy of the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI); Hon. Tanko Ashang, former Attorney General of Cross River State; Mr. Felix Itittim, the DPP; Blessing Egwu and the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking after the trial, Barr. James Ibor, Head of BRCI, said the mother of the child reported the matter and they alerted the police who started investigations and ensured the culprit was arraigned in Court.

“The convict, Emmanuel Thompson Udo, committed the crime against his stepdaughter in August, 2018 in his house at 45 Afokang Street, Calabar and in less than 3 years, he was convicted – this is to show how proactive the investigation team was.

“The mother of the child reported the matter to us and we alerted the Police in August, 2018. The police did investigation and he was arraigned and we have been following up the case.

“We provided psychosocial support to the child and we stood by the child throughout the period of the investigation and trial.

“Currently, the child is 16. She is in school and I have spoken with her this morning, she is excited that justice has been served”, Ibor said.

The BRCI boss further thanked the Nigeria Police special investigators; the former Cross River State Attorney General, Hon. Tanko Ashang; the DPP-Mr Felix Itittim and Blessing Egwu for their effort in securing justice.
