Court Dismisses Maryam Sanda’s No Case Submission, Orders Defence
Ruling on the submission on Thursday, the trial judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu held that from the preponderance of evidence of all the prosecution witnesses, a thick cloud has been formed by the prosecution making it important to call the other side to make their case.
“The submission of no case to answer by Maryam Sanda, the first defendant, is overruled. I call on the first defendant to enter her defence,” the judge held.
Halilu held that by the evidence adduced before him, the offence is punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code.
“From the evidence of prosecution witnesses one to six adduced before me, a thick cloud seems to form around the case of the prosecution, making it impossible at this point of time for the other side not to be considered.
“The submission of the no case to answer as it were in this particular situation is overruled.
Maryam is being tried before the court for allegedly killing Bello, her husband, who was a nephew of former PDP Chairman, Alhaji Bello Muhammad.
The court also discharged and acquitted Maryam’s mother, Maimuna Aliyu; brother, Aliyu Sanda and housemaid, Sadiya Aminu, who were accused by police of assisting Maryam to conceal the evidence by cleaning the blood of the deceased from the scene of the crime.
The judge held that the police, either by omission or commission, have clearly not done well in tying Maimuna, Aliyu and Sadiya, to the offence of screening.
“The no case submission of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants is hereby upheld and they are hereby discharged and acquitted,” Justice Halilu held.
Halilu thereafter fixed May 6 for definite defence and ordered that the trial shall be on a day-to-day basis unless otherwise decided by the court.

Court Orders Saraki, Melaye, Murray-Bruce To Honour Police Invitation
Justice Okon Abang gave the order on Thursday while delivering judgment in a fundamental human rights suit filed by the trio alleging intimidation, harassment and threat by the police.
“It is my view that the police invitation to the applicants is still valid and subsisting; The applicants shall respond or report to the police invitation without fail.
“It is how the police treats them upon their having honoured the application that would determine whether their fundamental rights was violated not before they honour the invitation,” the judge said.
The judge held that even though the applicants were not on trial, where there were allegations against them, they had an obligation to report to the police upon been invited.
He insisted that the court could not restrain the police from discharging its duties as long as it was done within the confines of the law.
According to the judge, the suit of the applicants lacks merit and is accordingly dismissed with a cost of N50,000 awarded in favour of the police.
The trio had filed an application asking the court to nullify the Oct. 6 and 8, 2018 letters of invitation to them by the Police.
They claimed that the Police invitation was an attempt to harass, intimidate and unlawfully detain them.
The senators also asked the court to declare that the act of dispersing their procession with tear gas was a violation of their fundamental rights, and asked the court to award N500 million to them as damages.
The three senators were part of the PDP leaders who led a protest on Oct. 5, 2018 asking the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) to conduct free and fair elections.

How S*x Worker Escaped Being Used For Money By Ritualist In Oyo
The lady whose name and identity was preferred to be made anonymous for security reasons narrated her ordeals while been kept in custody by security operatives in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
In a statement during the handing over of two suspected internet fraudsters to the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan Zonal Office, the middle-aged woman said she had joined the boys alongside some other friends from a club to pass the night with the boys unaware of their antics and intentions.
The suspects, Sanusi Azeez Toba and Osho Olalekun Micheal, arrested at Kolapo Ishola, Akobo area of Ibadan were handed over to the Oyo State’s special anti-crime patrol outfit codenamed, “Operation Burst”, after the escaped victims reported the matter to them.
She added that she had to jump down from a two storey building where she and others were taken hostage and later scale a fence when she noticed the boys were acting funny in the middle of the night.
She said “We met at the club last night and we all went back to their apartment to sleep over. At some point I noticed some funny movement and saw them with a calabash (a native pot).
“That was when I knew they were ritualists with the intention to use me for rituals. So I jumped off the two-storey building, and off the fence. I then reported the case to the ‘Operation Burst’”
Preliminary investigations have also revealed that the suspects have various incriminating documents stored in the laptops and phones recovered from them at the point of arrest.
The development is coming even as operatives from the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Commission also on Wednesday, arrested another twelve suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as ‘Yahoo-Yahoo Boys’
While six of the suspects were arrested at 2nd Pipeline, Ologunerun, Ibadan, the other five were picked up at a location in Ijebu-Remo, Ogun State.
Those from Ibadan are Akinbinu Akinfemi, Wasiu Adeyemi, Idowu Samson, Tijani Usman, Saheed Eniafe and Adeyi Victor.
Benson Gospel, Abdulazeez Gafar, Agbumabiwon Abiodun, Abayomi Awotedu, and Bukayo Abiodun were apprehended at Ijebu Remo.
Ranging between the ages of 17 and 29 years, the alleged fraudsters’ arrests were occasioned by petitions from their neighbours, detailing their alleged fraudulent activities.
The alleged acts include love scam and other forms of internet fraud through which they obtain money from unsuspecting victims.
Items recovered from them include laptops, mobile phones and several documents containing false pretences.
“All the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded”, a source within the Ibadan zonal office of the commission noted.

The dangling body of the man who was last seen on Monday and a native Kwale in Moba Local Government area of the state was discovered on Thursday morning.
A source who referred to himself as Mama Ngozi told Vanguard that “we last saw him on Monday when he was leaving the house, nobody knew when he came back to the house. We never knew he had hanged himself in his room.
It was only this morning when we were beginning to inhale some foul odour and people has been coming to ask of him that we suspected foul play.
He is a very reserved person and hardly talk to anybody. You hardly find him with anybody, male or female” the source said.

We Didn’t See Adeleke In Examination Hall, NECO Supervisors Tell Court
It was at the resumed proceedings of the trial of the Ede-born senator and four others for their alleged involvement in examination malpractices.
The prosecution called two witnesses – Emmanuel Odesola and Adigun Akintayo – who said they acted as supervisor and invigilator during the June/July 2017 NECO examination in Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School, Ojo-Aro, Osun State.
Odesola (a teacher, who was a supervisor during the examination) and Akintayo (a teacher and invigilator) said they only saw Sikiru Adeleke (the Senator’s brother), who is listed as the 2nd respondent, in the examination hall.
The witnesses also said they did not experience malpractices.
They said of the five defendants, they only saw the second defendant (Sikiru Adeleke), the principal and registrar of Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School during the examination.
Senator Adeleke, Sikiru Adeleke (who is said to be the senator’s relative), Alhaji Aregbesola Mufutau (the school principal), Gbadamosi Thomas Ojo (registrar) and Dare Samuel Olutope (teacher) were arraigned in November last year.
Lawyers to the defendants did not object to the prosecution lawyer’s application, following which Justice Inyang Ekwo adjourned to June 10 and 11 for continuation of trial.
Justice Ekwo warned the prosecution to keep to the days given by the court.

Ibadan Polytechnic Orders Immediate Suspension Of Student Union
Announcing the management decision, the Institutions spokesperson, Mr Adewole Soladoye said the suspension became necessary as the student union body had failed to obey and follow the rules guiding its activities on campus.
According to him, the management directed the immediate suspension because of the ongoing football competition which had been disturbing the peace of the institution ahead of next week’s examination.
He urged the students, in general, to stay committed to their examination which begins shortly. He added that the management will not hesitate to punish anyone who flouts the rules guiding the institution.

Ibadan Poly Sports Director Stabbed
The incident took place after the Faculty of Engineering (FENG) Queens lost a football match to their colleagues in the faculty of Business and Communications Studies (FBCS) Queens.
The annual inter-faculty football competition was held at the Sport Pavilion, North Campus of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
