Onnoghen Opens Up: It's A Lie, I Didn’t Confess To Hiding My Bank Accounts

The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has scheduled judgment for Thursday in the trial of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen.

Onnoghen is being tried on a six-count charge in which he is accused of breaching the Code of Conduct for public officers by allegedly making false declaration of assets and also failing to declare some.

He denied confessing to hiding his accounts. The prosecution insisted his guilt had been proven.

CCT’s Chairman Danladi Umar announced the judgment date yesterday after lawyers to the prosecution and defence adopted their final written addresses.

Umar said the court will also, on April 18, deliver two rulings earlier reserved on two applications filed by the defendant, one of which is challenging the tribunal’s jurisdiction; the other is querying his competence as the tribunal chairman to preside over the case.

Proceedings began yesterday on a dramatic note when the second most senior member of the prosecution team, Prof Zainab Duke, disagreed with the team’s leader, Aliyu Umar (SAN).

Shortly after the announcement of appearances by both the prosecution and defence teams, Umar stood up to address the tribunal.

But, before Umar could say anything, Prof. Duke also indicated her intention to speak, raising her hand – a move the lead prosecution lawyer objected to.

Duke, who was bent on addressing the tribunal, rose to her feet and reached for the microphone, but Umar, who moved the microphone from her reach.

Umar, who told Prof Duke that it was improper for her to speak while she was being led by a senior colleague, later applied to the tribunal to delete her name from the prosecution team’s list of lawyers.

In a brief ruling, the tribunal’s chairman acceded to Umar’s request and deleted Prof. Duke’s name from his record.

The CCT chairman noted that it was not permitted for two lawyers to speak for a party during proceedings. He said Prof. Duke, could only communicate through Umar, except with approval of her lead counsel, after obtaining the permission of the tribunal.

Following the pronouncement by the CCT chairman, Prof. Duke sat back a little while, gathered her belongings, including a bag and some books, and left.

Outside the court, Prof Duke told reporters, who sought to know what the problem was, that her intention was to make some contributions to the prosecution’s opening remarks by citing an example of a similar trial conducted in England some years ago.

Shortly after Prof. Duke’s exit, the tribunal’s chairman called on the lead defence lawyer, Okon Nkanu Efut (SAN) to adopt the defendant’s final written address.

Efut, urged the tribunal to dismiss the charge, acquit and discharge the defendant. He argued that not only was the charge incompetent, the prosecution failed to establish the defendant’s guilt.

Efut faulted the competence of the charge and the procedure adopted by the prosecution, which, he argued, were unlawful.

He faulted the prosecution’s claim that the defendant confessed to the offence when, in his written statement, he said he forgot to declare some of his assets, particularly some bank accounts.

Efut said: “It is true in ordinary parlance that once a person says he did something, that is admittance. But, confession in law is different from confession in general parlance.

“When the defendant said he forgot, he did not mean he confessed. We are submitting that there has been no confession at all. There is no admission of guilt. Confession, in law, means admission of guilt.”

Efut argued that the charge was incompetent because it was brought under Section 15 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal (CCB/T) Act, which, he said, has been found to be in conflict with Paragraph 11 of the 5th Schedule to the Constitution.

He added: “The charge ought to have been brought under Parapgraph 11 to the 5th Schedule to the 1999 Constitution. The section under which the charge is prepared is unconstitutional and null and void.

“The elements of the offence, which the prosecution attempted to prove are as it relate to the Act (CCB/T Act). They failed to prove the elements or ingredients as contained in the 5th Schedule of the 1999 Constitution.

“If they do not know the ingredients of the offence, they could not have proved it. They acted in ignorance. We urge that the charge be dismissed, because the prosecution has not proved beyond reasonable doubt the ingredients or elements of the offence.”

Efut also faulted the prosecution’s claim that the defendant made false declaration of assets, insisting that Onnoghen fully complied with the law by declaring his assets as required.

He referred to page 13, paragraph 27 of the prosecution’s final written address, where he said the prosecution argued that “the failure or refusal of the defendant to give information on the accounts is partially false”.

Efut argued that for the prosecution to have said the defendant’s action was partially false “means that it is partially true and, therefore, cannot be false”.

He went on: “If it is partially false, it raises some doubt as to the falsity. If there is any iota of doubt, the law says it must be resolved in favour of the defendant.

“On the whole, we urge that this six-charge be dismissed, because the prosecution has failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the essential elements or ingredients of the offences.”

Countering Efut while adopting his address, Umar, urged the tribunal to hold that the prosecution has proved its case against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt.

Umar equally urged the tribunal to hold that the defendant is guilty on all the six counts.

On the defence’s attack of the charge’s competence, Umar contended: “In coming to the decision whether or not a defendant is guilty, it is the hard fact that the court should look at.

“It is a misconception by the defence to think the first set of charge is null and void simply because it is not elegantly drafted the way the defendant would have wanted it drafted.

“They have not shown that the defendant was misled by the way the charge was drafted. It is not the statute that creates an offence.”

Umar argued that there was no conflict between the provision of the CCB/T Act and the Constitution as claimed by the defence.

He submitted that the prosecution had effectively discharged its responsibility under the law by establishing the guilt of the defendant.

Umar argued that by evidence led, the prosecution showed that the defendant did not declare his assets as required either by the Act or the Constitution.

He faulted the defence’s contention that the defendant did not confess and argued that “it is neither the provision of the Evidence Act or case law for the suspect to tell the police that I am guilty of the offence”.

“It is the action or omission that the court will consider to determine the guilt or otherwise of the defendant.

“In Exhibit 6 (the defendant’s statement), if the defendant said I did not declare, because I forgot, it is for the court to decide whether or not forgetting is a defence envisaged by the Act.

“In 2016, he went before a High Court judge and declared his assets, without referring to the bank accounts. By the evidence of PW3, the accounts had been in existence from 2009 and 2010 and ought to have been declared when the defendant declared his assets in 2016.

“We urge the tribunal to hold that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and enter a verdict of conviction.”

Deadly Armed Men Attack Police Officers In Delta, Disappear With Their Rifles

Some armed hoodlums have reportedly attacked a team of policemen who were on a stop-and-search duty in Asaba, Delta State capital, carting away two service rifles in the encounter.

Two of the policemen reportedly sustained life-threatening injuries during the attack.

It was gathered by The Punch that the incident occurred around Interbua roundabout by ASCON Oil Filling Station, along the popular Nnebisi road on Saturday night.

A source who witnessed the attack told The Punch that the gunmen were driving a tricycle from the Anwai axis of the road when they suddenly disembarked to attack their victims.

The source disclosed that the bandits who numbered four in the tricycle were armed with axes and cutlasses, adding that they successfully stole two guns from their targets.

The leader of the Police team, an inspector, was said to have sustained severe cuts to the head and other parts of his body, while the other victim sustained cuts to the hands.

Sources disclosed that the victims were presently receiving treatment at two different hospitals in Asaba.

When contacted, the Acting Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Chuks Orisewezie, confirmed the attack, saying that some of their men sustained injuries. He promised that the assailants would be brought to book as the Police have swung into action to apprehend them.

Mum Spots 'Ghost Of Great Gran Soothing Her Son On Baby Monitor' [Photos]

A mum claims she spotted the ghost of her son's 90-year-old great-grandmother soothing the sleeping boy on a baby monitor.

Kerri Waterworth, 29, feared it was a spider on the camera and rushed into her son Ellis Gooch's room to shoo it away before it scuttled into his bed.

But the mum was shocked when she realised there was nothing there - and claims "linear orbs" reappeared on the monitor after she went downstairs.

She has shared footage of what she claims appears to be a spectral arm stroking five-year-old Ellis' leg, tummy and the top of his head, before flying away.

Ellis, who has autism, becomes upset by any disruption in routine but Kerri claims he appeared to be soothed and responded positively to the phantom hand on April 3.

Full-time carer Kerri believes that it may have been the ghost of Ellis' great-grandmother, Elizabeth 'Peggy' Gooch, 90, who was very close with the little boy before she passed away in 2016.

Kerri, from Lancashire, said: "I wasn't scared by it, more intrigued. I got a calming sense from the apparition.

"But I was slightly freaked out.

Priest Banned From Cathedral After His Wife Won A Beauty Pageant [Photos]

A Russian priest has been barred from entering a cathedral and banished to a remote village after his wife won a beauty pageant.

Oksana Zotova, 32, has faced brutal criticism and threats after being crowned 'Miss Sexuality' in the contest in Magnitogorsk, Russia.

Her husband Sergiy Zotov has been banned from officiating in Magnitogorsk Orthodox Cathedral - and has been exiled to a remote and sleepy village church 43 miles away.

The 31-year-old cleric has been told he has no way back because of the 'scandal', unless his wife - a beauty therapist with her own salon - 'repents'.

The exiled priest said that his wife 'understands her mistakes (and) knows what she did wrong' - yet she has not repented, and instead criticised the church.

Meanwhile Mr Zotova said his wife faced 'threats, abuse, and other angry messages' - and said he planned to call the police to have them informed.

Adeyemi Sues Melaye Over Kogi West Election! Allege Inflation Of Votes & Over-Voting

Senator Smart Adeyemi has filed a petition against the election of Dino Melaye for Kogi West.

Adeyemi, who had twice represented the senatorial district, said a lot of inflation of votes and over-voting were perpetrated at the polls and even at the collation centre.

He also alleged that with the Certified True Copies of results at his disposal, it was evident that mutilated figures were announced in favour of Melaye.

He said contrary to a ruling of the Federal High Court, obtained by Melaye, that the results for Kogi West District be collated in Kabba (the headquarters of the district), INEC for no other reasons moved the collation to Lokoja, which led to manipulation of results.

He asked the Kogi State Election Petition Tribunal to cancel the results and order the conduct of a fresh senatorial poll for the senatorial district.

He said: “That a lot of inflation of votes and over-voting were perpetrated at the polls and even at the collation centre to ensure that the 1st Respondent (Melaye) is declared as winner.

“The petitioner avers that the collation and declaration of the results of the election was done by INEC and its officers at Lokoja contrary to the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“In the circumstance, false and fabricated entries were made in the Forms EC8A in the various wards of the Kogi West Senatorial District and by this act invented well over 18,000 votes in favour of Melaye

“That significant instances of substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act and arbitrariness were perpetrated at the polling units by agents of the 2nd Respondent (the People’s Democratic Party) and INEC to effect the voting of Melaye by allowing manual voting and allowing unregistered voters and under-age to vote in six local government areas of the seven local government areas of Kogi West Senatorial District.”

He sought a “declaration that the Certificate of Return issued by the INEC to Melaye as the  winner of senatorial election for Kogi West Senatorial District held on February 23, 2019 is null and void and of no effect whatsoever”.

He asked for an order “cancelling the results of the six local governments in the district, namely Lokoja Local Government, Kabba/ Bunu LGA, Ijumu LGA, Yagba West LGA, Yagba East LGA and Mopa-Amuro LGA for non-compliance with the Electoral Act and for the 1st  respondent not being elected by majority of lawful votes due to over-voting”.

Lagos PDP, Agbaje Go To WAR Over Campaign Funds Released By Atiku

The leadership of Lagos State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the party’s candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, are embroiled in a war of words over the management of the campaign funds released by the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to the state chapter.

The PDP leadership is demanding an apology from Agbaje for sidelining them in the disbursement of campaign funds and logistics for the presidential and governorship elections
PDP chieftains said Agbaje’s conduct was responsible for the party’s abysmal performance.

The party spokesman, Mr. Taofik Gani, yesterday alleged that Agbaje sat over the campaign funds and alienated strong members and leaders of the party from the final disbursement for logistics.

This action, he said, consequently reflected in the performance of the state PDP during the elections.
Gani, who visited The Nation office in Lagos yesterday, said: “As the image-maker of the party, I’m still struggling to defend the issues surrounding the disbursement of the election logistics because the action is such that can undermine loyalty, commitment and selflessness to the party.

“I will advise Agbaje to accept that he made a big blunder to have unilaterally disbursed logistics provided by the presidential candidate to the extent that not even the state chairman, Dr. Adegbola Dominic or the party leader, Chief Bode George, knew anything about the manner of disbursement. I am also aware that other leaders like Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, Mrs. Aduke Maina and Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele were in the dark.”

But, Agbaje’s spokesperson, Mrs. Modupe Ogunbayo, dismissed the allegations made against her principal.

According to Mrs. Ogunbayo, “Agbaje sourced for funds and disbursed them to all that were involved in the election process. All the people that participated in the election including party agents and councillors were fully mobilised and funded during the elections. As I speak, many of them are still collecting funds. So, what are they still talking about after the election that has come and gone?”

She said: “Agbaje is a noble party man, who will never embark on a road that is inimical to the development of PDP.  He is a true democrat, who took part in the party primary and won. He had always abided by the party’s rules and regulations. It will not be fair to denigrate him for selfish reasons. We should move beyond this level.”

She explained that there used to be campaign meetings at Agaje’s office at least once in a week, which was always attended by the party’s spokesman, Mr. Taofik Gani.

APC Rep From Oshiomhole's State Sacked Because He Was "Imposed"

The Court of Appeal in Benin on Monday nullified the election of Peter Akpatason of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a member of the House of Reps for the Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency.

The Speaker, Edo House of Assembly, Kabiru Adjoto, had filed an appeal against the judgment of a lower court that held and declared Akpatason as the party’s candidate in the March 9, National Assembly election.

Adjoto won the primary election held in October 18, but was denied the ticket by APC leadership.
The Justice Moore Abraham-Adumein-led three-member tribunal, in its Judgment, held that Akpatason was not the right candidate who emerged from the party primary, hence was not qualified to have contested for the March 9 national assembly election.

The tribunal subsequently declared Adjoto, being the candidate who emerged from the party primaries, as the right candidate for the Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency.

The Court also nullified the decision of the APC’s National Assembly Primaries Election Appeals Committee headed by former Governor of Edo, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor.

Abraham-Adumein held that the trial court ought to have heard the case brought before it “since it is its duty to do so’’.

“The trial court, for reasons best known to it, failed or neglected to make any pronouncement on the live issue before it,” he said.

Abraham-Adumein said the Osunbor committee was not properly constituted because the committee contravened Article 21B of the APC guidelines, part of which said, “no member of the five-member appeals committee shall be from the state of assignment” and so the committee ab initio ought not to hear the case.

He, however, said that referring the case back to the trial court would have been statute barred but that having considered the evidence before the lower court which it did not consider, "Adjoto won the primary election, as the returning officer, Sufiyanu Igbafe, declared that Adjoto scored 7,034 votes, as against his opponent, Peter Akpatason’s 5,606 votes.

“This appeal is hereby unanimously allowed and the prayers sought by the appellant in the trial court are hereby granted and the sum of N300, 000 is hereby awarded as costs against the 1st and 2nd respondents.”

He said his two colleagues: Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, who is the presiding justice and Justice Tunde Efotoye, agreed with the judgment.

However, Counsel to Akpatason, Omoh-Ige Adebayo said they would contest the judgment in the Supreme Court, while an elated Adjoto said, “The judiciary is not only the last hope of the common man but also of the big man.”

Adjoto promised to give more representation to his people, more than he has given to them at the state house of assembly.

9 Top FIRS Officials Nabbed Over 'Multi-Billion Naira' Fraud

Nine senior officials of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) are currently in detention over alleged multi-billion naira fraud in the huge money-making agency.

The top officials, who are being detained by the anti-graft agency (EFCC) in Abuja, include the Director of Finance and Accounts (DFA) of the FIRS, Mohammed Auta.

Apart from Auta, another director, Peter Hena, is also alleged to be involved in the scandal.

Mr Hena, the Coordinating Director, Support Services Group of the FIRS, is currently out of Nigeria and will be arrested as soon as he returns to the country, EFCC sources told Premium Times.

A top official of the FIRS, however, said Mr Hena is on official medical leave outside the country and did not flee. Mr Hena is believed to be one of the closest officials to the FIRS chairman, Babatunde Fowler.

It is still unclear to EFCC officials, whether or not Mr Fowler is involved in the scandal. PT has no evidence of the involvement of the FIRS chief.

Details of the scandal are still sketchy as at the time of this report. However, Messrs Auta and Hena are being investigated for allegedly diverting about N6 billion tax funds that should have gone to the Nigerian government, anti-corruption officials said.

Most of the other affected officials are from the finance and account department of the FIRS. All the officials have been in the EFCC detention since April 1.

Premium Times learnt the EFCC is closing in on several other senior officials of the revenue collection service in a widening investigation to uncover other fraudulent activities involving several billions of government tax revenues.

When contacted on the detention, the EFCC spokesperson, Orilade Tony, confirmed that the officials were detained at the EFCC office in Wuse 2, Abuja. He asked to be given more time to get more details on the detention.

The FIRS is saddled with collecting taxes and revenues of the federal government, of Trillions of Naira.

How We Were Initiated Into Eiye In Lagos - Cultists Confess

The Anti-cult Unit of the Lagos police recently made a breakthrough after they arrested three of the most dreaded members of the cult group at Somolu/Bariga.

The suspects are alleged associates of the most wanted suspected kingpin in the cult gang called Jepro who allegedly started his reign of terror in Somolu/Bariga areas of the state. He is alleged to be into armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, etc and his alleged exploits earned him not just the fearful nickname, Jepro, but also significant wealth to show for it.

He allegedly flaunts his wealth publicly as much as he boasts about his exploits in the criminal world.

Police sources said he boasts that nobody can subdue him and members of his alleged gang because of the calibre of their sponsors.

According to sources, their suspected sponsors are mostly top politicians who use and dump him as the need arises. It was learned that he has been in and out of prison severally and each time he was caught, he boasts openly that he will be released. And, it will later come to pass.

Sources said Jepro, who has been on the wanted list of the police in Lagos for long, escaped several times after committing crime and efforts made to arrest him always ended in noughts.

It was said that there was a time detectives trailed him to the prison and were awaiting to arrest him after his release but they were shocked after he disappeared without trace.

Later, he re-surfaced after some suspected cultists struck in the area and his name was prominently mentioned as the leader of the violence that erupted during their operation.

However, it was the end of the road for three members of his alleged gang, recently, after detectives from the Anti-cult Unit of the state Police Command, headed by CSP Uduak, succeeded in demystifying them. Police sources said the three suspects were arrested ‘like chickens’ in one hideout.

It was learned that on that day, the police at the unit received information that Jepro was in the area. The apprehensive but heavily armed police unit, personally led by their Commander, Uduak, swung into action and proceeded to the area. They invaded the hideout where a group of young men were said to be busy smoking weeds and drinking. It was gathered that the moment Jepro saw that the area was surrounded by policemen, he took to his heels, leaving some members of his gang who gave up and surrendered. The three suspects allegedly opened up about their exploits during interrogation by the police.

However, the snag now, according to police sources, is that the suspects, who initially opened up by saying that they will name top politicians in the state that sponsor their criminal activities, surprisingly sealed their lips and vowed never to talk about their exploits or expose their sponsors. Police sources said that all efforts made so far for them to open up have failed.

When Sunday Vanguard confronted the suspects, one of them, Ogunlaja Elijah, 28, denied his involvement in the crimes he had been associated with but agreed that he belonged to Aiye Cult group in Shomolu/Bariga.

He narrated how he was initiated: “I am from Ogun State and single. I live with my mother at Elanke Number 4, Ibadan Street, Oworonshoki. I have three friends from Osun State. One day, we went for their father’s burial. That was where the battle was staged. It was night before I knew they had initiated me into Aiye cult. They were four in number, so they put me in their midst. After that, I left them there and came back to Lagos. That was in 2015.

“They came to Oworoshoki where I live with my mother to stay with me. So, last year, 2018, was when the issue happened, when they killed one of my friends Tunde. They shot him and used machete on him. The guys that shot him were Shehu, Aro and Yusuf from Eiye Confraternity. It was during November and December period and they were also killed. They were the three guys that initiated me and I normally operated with them. The other cult group killed my cousin and it led to a fight and my guys killed them also. I got my gun from a security guy from Benue State; he sold his gun, a short locally made gun to me for N22,000. After our encounter with the police, they collected everything from us. I was remanded in Ikoyi prison in January and released in March, 2019. I heard they did peace talk in the community. My mum called me to say she was sick and was in hospital. I had to go there to give her money for drugs and that was when the police arrested me. I feel very sad and regret killing people.”

SUSPECT No 2: “My name is Yesiru Adesanya. I am 37 years old. I attended Shomolu Baptist Primary School. Femi Jepro initiated me into Eiye Confraternity. He asked me to come to Fadeyi as he wanted to see me, but I didn’t know about cultism because I did not go to school. “When I got there, I saw people gathered. They pulled off my shirt and initiated me. I have not killed anyone in my life. I was inside with other cult members when I heard there was a fight, I just went outside, but I didn’t get involved in the fight.”

SUSPECT No 3: “My name is Kunle Sholeye. I am 38 years old. I attended primary and secondary schools. I am married with a child. I have never killed anybody in my life. I didn’t benefit anything from belonging to Eiye Confraternity, and I pity myself for joining. I joined because Femi Jepro called me that there was a party and when I got there, they initiated me. As I joined, they made me a member of Road Transport Workers Union at Jibowu”.

When asked about their advice to government on cultism, the trio stated that government should call for peace in the community. “They should help youths to find jobs because if they are gainfully engaged, they can’t be used for cult activities”, Sholeye said.

Oh No! 33 Corps Members Rushed To Hospital As Rainstorm Wrecks Havoc In Camp

No fewer than 33 Batch A Corps members undergoing their three weeks orientation at the camp of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Sibre, outskirt of Jalingo, Taraba State capital were hospitalised following a heavy rainstorm that destroyed buildings and other valuables on Saturday.

The rainstorm which started around 5:30pm caught up with the corps members who were out celebrating the cultural festival in preparation for their passing out parade billed for Tuesday.

The natural disaster which also shattered the screen of the corps ambulance, blew off several roofing sheets including that of the generator house and of the boys and girls dormitory, leaving them tattered.

The State Coordinator, Florence Yaakugh, who narrated the occurrence to Vanguard on Monday said no life was lost to the unfortunate incident. According to her “we were all here as camp officials and corps members having the cultural festival on Saturday when the rainstorm all of a sudden started.

“The storm was so strong that visibility was so poor for both the corps members who were on parade and the camp officials.

“While scampering for safety because of the fierceness of the storm, some corps members who had some health challenges like asthma, chest congestion and the likes were choked.

“About 33 of them were moved to the clinic of which nine were referred to Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Jalingo because of their condition.”

Yaakugh, who confirmed that the 24 corps members admitted in the camp’s clinic had been discharged also said five of the nine taken to FMC Jalingo have also returned to the camp, while the remaining four are still receiving treatment.

While lamenting the level of destruction of valuables in the camp, Yaakugh also expressed fear over the devastating effect erosion had caused and the looming danger as the raining season is fast approaching.

She, however, noted that a government official had visited the camp to take a directory of the damage caused, with a promise from the state government that all repair works will commence in earnest.

Fire Breaks Out In Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral

A huge fire swept through the roof of the famed Notre-Dame Cathedral in central Paris on Monday evening, sending flames and huge clouds of grey smoke billowing into the sky.

The flames and smoke plumed from the spire and roof of the gothic cathedral, visited by millions of people a year.

A spokesman for the cathedral told AFP that the wooden structure supporting the roof was being gutted by the blaze.

The fire service said the blaze could be “potentially linked” to ongoing renovations.

President Emmanuel Macron cancelled a major televised policy speech he was due to give on Monday evening over the “terrible fire ravaging Notre-Dame.”

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo in a tweet described it as a “terrible fire”.

“The Paris fire service is trying to control the flames,” she wrote on Twitter, asking residents to respect the security cordon thrown up around the site.

A spokesperson for the cathedral said the fire, which comes as French Catholics prepare to celebrate Easter, broke out at around 1650 GMT.

Fire trucks could be seen speeding through Paris towards the scene on the Ile de la Cite — an island in the Seine at the heart of Paris.

US President Donald Trump in a tweet said: “So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!”

14 Die In Akwa Ibom From Waterborne Diseases

No fewer than 14 persons have reportedly died between last December and April this year in Okoroutip, an oil bearing community in Ibeno local government area Akwa Ibom state from water borne diseases.

The Nation gathered that natives of the community do not have access to potable drinking water as their only source of water is from contaminated stagnant ponds.

The community is also threatened by frequent flood incidents and water surge resulting in the displacement of natives and destruction of houses.

A youth leader of the village, Mr. Henry Ekpe Nkan lamented that they depend on existing ponds and other stagnant water that flows from creeks as their daily drinking water.

“As a riverine area where there is no bush to dispose waste, the community dispose faeces and other organic substances in the water and still drink from it.”

He said this unhealthy disposition threw the entire community into water borne epidemic that has claimed fourteen lives from December last year.

Brilliant Young Lady Emerges Best Graduating Student With 9 Awards (Photo)

A Nigerian university student, A'eesha Abdullahi Abaji who emerged the best graduating student from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria has talked about her life.

Daily Trust: What schools did you attend?
A’eesha Abdullahi Abaji: I attended Plateau Private School Jos for my Nursery and Primary education; Airforce Girls’ Comprehensive School Jos for my secondary school education and then the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

DT: What were your favourite subjects?
A’eesha: Mathematics and Biology. I love sciences; I couldn’t have done anything else. I didn’t like English, Literature and Book Keeping. So it had to be science.

DT: Where you the best student while in primary and secondary school?
A’eesha: In primary school, I was the best student in my own class but not the overall best in the set. And in secondary school, I was the second overall best.

DT: Who influenced you to become a medical doctor?
A’eesha: I was a very indecisive person; I kept changing my future ambition to anything that sounds nice to me. But all my friends in science class wanted to be doctors, so when the time came to fill jamb forms, I just went with the crowd.

DT: Did any of your lecturers think you were too young to be a medical doctor?
A’eesha: None of my lecturers ever said I was too young; I wasn’t even the youngest in my class. But surprisingly, now that I am a doctor, a lot of people seem to think I look too young. Some have even out rightly asked me my age.

DT: What challenges did you face in the university?
A’eesha: University was my first time of being on my own (unsupervised) so I was quite scared at the beginning. Everyone in my class looked and sounded very intelligent and I thought that I wouldn’t be equal to the task, I doubted myself a lot. I was also an introvert, so I had challenges making friends in my class in the beginning, and so I hardly had any information about a lot of things.

DT: How did you feel being the best graduating student?
A’eesha: I felt immense gratitude to God Who uplifts whom He wills and I also felt very humbled.

DT: List the nine awards you won?
A’eesha: They are: best in Community Medicine, Haematology, Internal Medicine, Medical microbiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pharmacology, best female in Pharmacology, overall best, NMA prize for overall best.

DT: What is your future plan?
A’eesha: To be a wife, mother and a specialist, in that order.

DT: What do you want to specialize on?
A’eesha: Paediatrics Cardiology, by the grace of Allah.

DT: Where are your parents from?
A’eesha: Dad is from Shabu in Lafia LGA and mum is from Daddare in Obi LGA of Nasarawa State, both are Gwandara by tribe.

DT: As a little girl, did anyone ever tell you that you will one day become a doctor?
A’eesha: Of course! I can’t remember anyone ever telling me that I couldn’t. Everybody seemed to believe in me (far more than I believed in myself).

Female Student Killed For Ritual In Delta: Family Cries Out

The family of Elozino Joshuana Ogege who was gruesomely murdered four days after she was declared missing last year, are still heartbroken following the way the case is going.

Recalled that Elozino Ogege, a 300 level student of Mass Communication, Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, was abducted and killed in November 2018.

Her corpse was found buried in a bushy area in
Umege after she was murdered by internet fraudsters otherwise known as ‘Yahoo boys’ who abducted the victim for ritual purpose with the support of a security staff, Onos Ekana, who worked in Site III of the university campus.

The security man who was arrested earlier – later confessed to the crime and revealed those also involved after interrogations at the State CID. The lead he gave led to the arrest of two other suspects who are said to be ‘Yahoo Boys’ who reside in Umege, a settlement in Abraka.

According to Comr. Obawharievbo Onajite, despite the arrests of the suspects involved in the crime, justice is not being served as the family of the deceased are still in deep pain. It was learnt that on the 18th of March 2019 in high court 1 Asaba, one of the culprits, a sister to the killer who was indicted in the murder - was set free by the Judicial head of the state on the grounds of Nolle Proseque claiming she's a minor.

The family of the deceased are not happy with this development as they are afraid that at the next court sitting, another accused will be set free by the court as they feel there's power from above involved in setting the culprits free.

The family is calling for the support and presence of the general public at high court 1 Asaba on Wednesday 17th April by 9am, to rally around for justice for their daughter Elozino Ogege.
