A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the forfeiture of 35.58 kilogrammes of gold bars and N36 million seized from a gold dealer and a federal civil servant by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to the Federal Government.
Justice Muslim S. Hassan, who made the order, also ordered the civil servant to pay N10million to the government for his part in the deal.
The first to third defendants are: Bukar Mandara Zarami; his company, Bukar Mandara Zarami Ltd; and a Director in the Ministry of Mines and Steel, Kar Nap Fenan Wuyep.
The trio were re-arraigned on an amended two-count charge of possession of 35.58 kilogrammes of gold bars wrapped in six bags without appropriate permit.
The counts read in part: “That you, Bukar Mandara Zarami, on or about the 9th day of November, 2018 in Nigeria…dealt in 35.58 kilogrammes of gold bars wrapped in six bags without appropriate permit; and you, therefore, committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 134(c) of the Nigerian Mineral and Mining Act, 2007.”
“That you, Kar Nap Fenan Wuyep, on or about the 22nd day of May, 2018 in Nigeria, without going through any financial institution, accepted cash payment of the sum of $19,440 from one Bakkkuk Steven Goyol, which sum exceeded the amount authorised by the Law; and, you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1)(a), Section 16(1) (d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2011 as Amended and punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act.”

The newly appointed Emir of Bichi, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, on Thursday advanced reasons why he accepted his appointment, saying it was not meant to spite Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi.
In a press conference, the Emir of Bichi, Bayero categorically stated that, he never lobbied to become the Emir to downgrade Emir Sanusi.

Historically the Police, Prisons, customs, Judges and schools were initially under the emirates, but as time went by, they separated and our forefathers had accept the changes.
“For me, having five Emirs in Kano will not affect its development. lf the Emirs have the concern about development of Kano, they can work together and move the state forward. There is no difference between all of us” he noted.
While commenting on the relationship with the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll, Bayero noted that,”Sanusi is my brother. He has respect for me and I have respect for him. l am from a royal family. When he was appointed Emir, I was among the first set of people that paid homage to him and l gave him my support and l will continue to support him.
“So, because I am appointed Emir, l don’t think he will not support me to succeed in all my undertakings. l have no grudges against him whatsoever and I don’t think he has any against me, he stressed.

The twin sons of Uganda’s State Water Minister Ronald Kibuule have drowned in the family swimming pool. Both Kibuule and his wife, Fortunate, were away when the tragedy took place.
The exact circumstances behind the drowning remain unclear because CCTV cameras were off although the children were in the care of two male minders, the Daily monitor reported.
When Kibuule and his wife returned to their home in Mbalala, some 30 kilometres along the Kampala-Jinja highway, they were unable to speak to the media due to being overcome by emotion.
One of the guards, who didn’t want to give his name as investigations continue, said they were unaware of the freak accident until one of the minders started yelling.

The Anambra State police command has announced that members of the public should disregard a sit-at-home order by members of the outlawed group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the state.
The Police command disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday. They added that IPOB remains proscribed and all its activities remain illegal.
“Information at the disposal of the Anambra State Police Command has revealed that the outlawed group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are perfecting plans through public announcement and threats in Nnewi and other parts of the State in order to enforce a “SIT AT HOME ORDER” warning people to stay at home and not to come out for any business activities on the 30/5/2019.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is still a proscribed organisation hence all its activities remains illegal,” the spokesperson of the command, Haruna Mohammed said.

Momager Kris Jenner is joined in the display by her bevvy of daughters Kim Kardashian West, Khloe Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Buratai, on Wednesday said embittered politicians who were bent on destabilizing the country were responsible for the rising activities of bandits.
He, however, warned them to abide by the outcomes of the elections and exercise restraints and allow peace to reign.
The Army chief pointed out that the military had strong evidence against the politicians sponsoring banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminal acts.
He gave this assertion while hosting members of the 10-man Committee on Army of the House of Representatives, who were in Maiduguri on a two-day oversight function.
He said, “There are myriads of security challenges we are facing right now in the North-West, North-Central and other parts of the country. I want to believe, and rightly so, that with the fallout of the just-concluded general elections, there are politicians who saw their defeat as a means of revenge, sponsoring these criminal activities and even banditry and clashes between the farmers and herders.
“We use this opportunity to call on members of the House of Representatives to prevail on some of these politicians, to really look at national interest first before any political or sectional interest. We have some strong evidence but we are still being conscious so that we don’t get it wrong but the best is to advise these politicians.”
He urged politicians to desist from any activities that would inflict pains on civilians, warning that all criminals would be dealt with in accordance with the law of the land.
He assured his guests that the Army would continue to pursue terrorists until they were finally exterminated from the nation.
