Jeremy Hunt’s new press freedom envoy Amal Clooney advised WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on how to sabotage the Government’s bid to arrest him, leaked documents have revealed.
In her role as a human rights lawyer, Mrs Clooney told Assange, 47, he was ‘uniquely qualified’ to become technology minister of Ecuador, in whose London embassy he was holed up for seven years.
The bizarre legal ruse could have won him the right to a safe passage out of Britain so he could avoid being jailed for breaching bail conditions imposed as he fought extradition to Sweden, she said.
The revelation will be embarrassing for the Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who appointed Mrs Clooney as his special envoy in April.
Mrs Clooney, wife of Hollywood star George Clooney, became Assange’s lawyer after he fled British justice in 2012 and sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in Knightsbridge. He was dragged out by Scotland Yard officers in April and now faces jail in the US, which is seeking to have him extradited on espionage charges. He also faces sex assault charges in Sweden.
The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has warned pilgrims to this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia to resist any temptation to carry hard drugs to the holy land.
Speaking on the heels of the inaugural flight of intending pilgrims, Mrs Dabiri-Erewa reminded them that Saudi laws prescribe death penalty against such act.
In a statement by the NIDCOM Head of Media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the commission chairman said it was disheartening that some Nigerians still ran foul of Saudi Arabia authorities’ law, despite repeated warnings and workshops for intending pilgrims.
She recalled that some Nigerians caught with hard drugs in the last few years were still on death row in Saudi Arabia.
The NIDCOM chairman pleaded with pilgrims to shun the shameful act.
Mrs Dabiri-Erewa also reminded the pilgrims that kolanuts and prescription painkillers in large quantities have been banned in Saudi Arabia.
The commission chairman warned that if found on anyone, the offence attracts severe penalties according to new Saudi Arabia regulations.
A jilted bride has revealed she is selling her unworn dress after her fiancé left her for their newlywed wedding planner.
Donna Bettiss, 28, from Horsham, West Sussex was left devastated after partner James Routledge, 30, dumped her just weeks before their big day in 2018.
James left his wife-to-be to start a relationship with work colleague Paige Hannington, 27, who had helped the couple organise and plan their wedding.
Donna is now selling her unworn £1,800 wedding dress to get rid of 'bad memories'.
Paige would meet up with Donna to drink cocktails and discuss the wedding, with Donna describing her as a 'massive help'.
The wedding planner was herself a newlywed and dumped her husband to start the relationship with James.
Donna and James got engaged six months after meeting in a nightclub.
Donna has a new partner and wants to forget her aborted 2018 wedding by selling her dress.
She explained that she had left it at her uncle's house until recently but it is now in her wardrobe and she wants to get rid of it because there are 'too many bad memories'.
James and Paige are now engaged and have a daughter together.
They said that they were both unhappy in their previous relationships.
Photographer Paige added: 'I told many friends I wanted to end my marriage, and I did. I saw James at work two or three days later and he told me he had left Donna. Nothing happened for four or five weeks.
A teenager was left with a fractured skull and permanent brain damage after her boyfriend nearly beat her to death.
Megan McPartlin, 18, has bravely spoken out about the horrific injuries inflicted by her controlling ex Aaron Worthington, 23.
They were celebrating New Year’s Eve at their home when he knocked Megan unconscious and punched her to a pulp. Megan couldn’t walk after the attack and suffered three brain injuries, fractures to her right eye and face and a bleed on the brain.
It took surgeons five hours to remove pieces of her broken skull and replace it with a metal plate, saving her life. Seven months later, the brave carer says she is still in pain and can feel the metal screws in her head.
She believes she’s ‘lucky to be alive’ but wants other victims of abusive relationships to know that ‘there is light at the end of the tunnel’.
Remembering the brutal attack at their home in Chorley, Lancashire, she told Metro.co.uk: ‘It was 5am on New Year’s Day and we’d been drinking.
‘He hit me once and I kicked him. He hit me again and it all went black. ‘Then I woke up and he wouldn’t get me an ambulance, he was calling me “dramatic”.
‘Then my neighbour came round and called one. It turned out I had a bleed on the brain and had hours on my life.’
Worthington was arrested after Megan’s family phoned the police from her bedside in hospital.
He was jailed for 27 months at Preston Crown Court last month after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm (GBH) without intent.
Usher has requested a Los Angeles court force one of the women who accused him of giving her herpes to pay $2,500 in sanctions in the case.
The Grammy-winning artist, 40, says his accuser - identified in legal docs as Jane Do and her lawyers went astray in the case when she would not answer questions during a deposition last month.
In the June 25, 2019 deposition, the Burn singer asked his accuser multiple questions about how he transmitted herpes to her.
The Atlanta, Georgia native has asked the presiding judge in the case to implement financial penalties for her silence in the deposition, and force her to answer the questions on the record.
The artist said that the woman had no basis to stonewall him, saying her silence was 'based on two objections, both of which are so frivolous as to be sanctionable' by the court.
Amid the deposition, the outlet reported the woman's legal team advised her to stay quiet, as the questions constituted an invasion of privacy.
Meghan Markle is being mom-shamed for the way she held her newborn son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor during the baby's first public outing, with critics insisting it looked like she was going to drop him.
The 37-year-old new mom was photographed cradling her baby boy and planting a tender kiss on his head while they joined Kate Middleton and her three children at Billingbear Polo Club in Wokingham, Surrey, on Wednesday to watch Prince William and Prince Harry go head-to-head in the King Power Royal Charity Polo Day.
After numerous outlets published photos of the Duchess of Sussex with Archie, people flocked to Instagram to criticize the way she was holding him, prompting fans to stick up for the royal amid the backlash.
'Meghan looks like she's about to drop him,' one Instagram user wrote, while another added: 'She's gonna drop that baby.'
'Meghan doesn't know how to carry her own baby! Such a shame,' someone else commented.
One person noted: 'The way little Archie is being held. Scary.'
Although the Duchess of Sussex seemed to be nothing but affectionate while holding her baby boy, critics couldn't resist pointing out all of the things they thought she was doing wrong.
'She should have put a hat and socks on the poor baby!!' one person griped. 'She is also not able to hold the baby.'
You can tell she doesn't even take care of her own kid. What kind of mother holds their baby like that,' someone else cruelly commented.
The mom-shaming prompted many people to come to her defense, even someone who insisted she wasn't a fan of the royal.
'I seriously dislike this girl but you can't put her down because she's not a pro at holding a baby,' the person wrote. 'She's still new to it and we've all held out babies awkwardly.
'She could be a natural at home but she's probably trying to shelter from the cameras and the judgment,' she added. 'I'm guessing no one can see it from that point of view since you are all perfect parents.'
'She's a brand new mother. Stop the damn mom shaming! Jesus,' someone else commented.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, on Wednesday, arrested 30 suspected internet fraudsters.
The suspects were apprehended at different locations within the city of Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital during an early morning raid carried out by operatives of the anti-graft agency.
The operation was a sequel to a deluge of intelligence reports available to the Commission on their alleged fraudulent activities.
According to the reports, many people have fallen victim to the tricks of the suspects, who exploit their dexterity on the use of the internet to allegedly commit a crime.
Ranging between the ages of 18 and 27 years, 11 of the suspects claimed to be undergraduates, while others said they are self-employed in various vocations.
Items recovered from them include eight exotic cars, laptops, mobile phones and several documents suspected to contain information used to access their victims.
The suspects are already providing useful information to aid further investigations.
They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
A 22-year-old man scaled the fence of Buckingham Palace in the early hours of the morning and got just metres away from the Queen.
The intruder was banging on doors in an attempt to get inside the palace as the head of state slept in her bedroom.
Police on site took around four minutes to detain him as they tried to assess if he was armed, sources say.
Doors to the 93-year-old monarch’s home are locked up in the early hours of the morning, so he trespasser was unable to get inside.
The royal standard flag was flying at the palace, which could have given the invader a clue that the Queen was at home.
A royal insider told The Sun: ‘This intruder got into the Palace almost 37 years to the day since Michael Fagan ended up getting inside the Queen’s bedroom.
There is a genuine theory and very real fear that he could have been launching a copycat operation.
‘How is it possible all these years later that someone can climb the fence and get right inside the grounds without being stopped immediately?
‘What about heat censors and CCTV? The Queen’s safety should be paramount.’
It is understood that the Queen was the only senior member of the royal family sleeping at the palace because of ongoing refurbishment work.
Scotland Yard say the man was arrested on suspicion of trespass and was held at around 2am by officers from the Met’s Royalty and Specialist Protection Command.
The man was not found in possession of any offensive weapons and the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
He remains in custody at a central London police station.
Surviving the first year of parenthood is a big deal. Living off no sleep for 12 months deserves celebrating - as does your cute baby - so it's as good excuse as any for a party .
But one mum has taken first birthdays to a new and, frankly, ridiculous extreme by issuing invites with some very specific rules attached.
The recipients of the invite, Rick and Andrew, shared the puzzling details on Reddit , revealing they knew the mum from church.
"It was all well and good until EM (entitled mother) gave us the rules a couple days before the party," Rick wrote.
"They were normal rules, no drugs or alcohol, decent attitude, except for one rule."
We're actually going to take a break here to point out having these rules in the first place is a little bizarre, but moving on...
The mum then dropped the bombshell rule, adding: "It said 'anyone attending this birthday party must not have had sex for the month prior and must not have sex for a week after'."
Rick and Andrew decided to not go, with Rick explaining "We decided not to go since us going would break that rule.
"Like any normal married couple, sex was a thing we had."
Then on the day of the party, the mum sent out a group message asking where everyone was.
"A good amount of people said they were breaking that rule,” Rick said.
"She got mad at all of us for being 'sinners' and blocked all our numbers."
The plot thickens, however as "It turns out her husband didn't know about the rule before the group chat.
"Two weeks later, she was found to be five weeks pregnant."
The mum's actions raised many questions, the most pertinent being, how do you enforce that sort of rule?
"Does she have a sex radar?” one mum questioned. "I would have had sex at the party, to be honest."
Ayoola Ajayi, the Nigerian accused of killing University of Utah student, MacKenzie Lueck has been charged with aggravated murder and aggravated kidnapping.
The charge was slammed on him days after police found Lueck’s body in Logan Canyon.
Ajayi, 31, faces four felony counts, including second-degree felony obstruction of justice and third-degree felony desecration of a body, in the high-profile case that has captivated the state and the nation since 23 year-old Lueck, disappeared on June 17.
The charge, filed Wednesday by Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill, says Lueck died of blunt force trauma to her head. It came with such force that Lueck died of internal bleeding.
Ayoola Ajayi and Mackenzie Lueck, the lady he killed
Gill said her body was found with her arms bound behind her back by a zip tie and rope.
“Mackenzie’s arms were bound behind her back by a zip tie and rope. A 5-centimeter hole was located on the left side of her skull with part of her left scalp missing,” according to charging documents filed in 3rd District Court.
Ajayi was booked into jail June 28 on suspicion of the same counts. The aggravated murder charge carries a potential death penalty if he is convicted.
Investigators have said that Lueck took a Lyft from the airport to Hatch Park in North Salt Lake in the early morning of June 17. She was picked up there by Ajayi, police said, and her phone stopped transmitting data at that point. A police search of Lueck’s phone showed he was the last person who communicated with her.
Gill declined to comment on the “prior history” between Lueck and Ajayi, or on “the nature or the contents” of texts between [Lueck and Ajayi] early on June 17.
Cellphone records showed Ajayi was near Logan Canyon on June 25, Gill said. On July 3rd, police went to Logan Canyon to search for Lueck’s body and located a disturbed area of soil under trees. They discovered a charred human body and DNA testing returned a profile consistent with Lueck, he said.
“This was an area that was off the main road” in Logan Canyon, Gill said. “A wooded area.”
The canyon is two hours north of Salt Lake City. Ajayi attended Utah State University, which is located in Logan, near the canyon.
Harper Beckham copied her mother's famous pose (and her short 'pob') in a sweet picture taken by her brother Brooklyn, to mark her eighth birthday on Wednesday.
The 'pob' was the name famously given to Posh Spice's bob when she had her locks cut some years ago.
A bride-to-be who shared a photo of her huge engagement ring online left people stunned - but not for the right reasons.
The woman, who has not been identified, proudly posted the snap of her whopper of a diamond as it glistened on her finger.
And while it was intended to show off the rock in all its glory, she has been trolled over the state of her manicure, with one cruel social media user saying: "It looks like the nail is running away!"
The woman's grown out pink and gold tipped acrylics have come under scrutiny after being shared in several shaming Facebook groups.
Writing in one, a member said: "Cross posting [this] from That's It, I'm Nail Shaming, because that ring is as awful as whatever the hell is happening with her nails."
“I couldn’t even focus on the ring after seeing the nails,” another added.
A third said: “I’m not normally speechless when I look at these kinda photos but damn … I’m 100% speechless."

In the sweet selfie, the singer can be seen on his back shirtless, with his gold chain pressed against his neck.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged secular musicians who protested to the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, to direct their future protests to the government.
This was stated by the association in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by its National Director, Legal and Public Affairs, Mr Samuel Vondip.
Some musicians, including led by Eedris Abdulkareem and Baba Fryo on Monday staged a peaceful protest at the RCCG Redemption Camp on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, calling on Pastor Adeboye to speak up against what they termed the injustice in the country.
”While we appreciate the concern of the protesters over the issues they raised and the call for a better nation, we strongly believe that singling out one of our leaders and members, to say the least, is unfair.
”The entire exercise, in our view, was ill-motivated. The people who staged this insulting protest against a highly revered Servant of God in the person of Pastor Adeboye are totally ignorant of the operations of CAN.
”It needs to be known to all that Adebayo had addressed the press on several occasions, saying that as a ‘man under authority’, he cannot speak on issues that CAN or PFN have spoken about,” Vondip said.
He said that any protest against Adeboye would be viewed by CAN as a systematic insult against church leaders in Nigeria.
”Why should any group of people think that it is their right to protest and demand that Pastor Adeboye must speak on the issues they listed when CAN and PFN had spoken about them?
”On about three occasions, CAN had taken many of the issues raised by the protesters to President Muhammadu Buhari
”CAN had requested the government to do more to get the people in Boko Haram captivity released.
“We specifically mentioned the remaining Chibok girls, Leah Sharibu, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the Islamic preacher who is still kept in detention against the ruling of the court,” he said.
