A Port Harcourt based singer, Gagiyouwe ThankGod a.k.a Tuesday Cruise, 25, has been sentenced to six months in jail after he was arrested and arraigned by the Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC before Justice A.T. Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, Rivers State on a one count charge. Gagiyouwe pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced. A statement from the EFCC reads in part;
Thankgod, a 25-year-old entertainer with the stage name “Tuesday Cruise” was arraigned on July 24, 2019, by the Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a one-count charge.
He pleaded “guilty” to the charge, and in view of his plea, counsel for the EFCC, Adebayo Soares prayed the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
Justice Mohammed, thereafter, convicted and sentenced him to six months imprisonment with an option of fine of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) only.
His journey to prison began on July 11, 2019, when he was arrested along Edet Akpan Avenue (Four Lanes) in Uyo by operatives of the Commission, following intelligence report.
At the time of his arrest, a laptop was found on him and a forensic analysis of it led to the retrieval of various scam documents, which the convict admitted to have sent out to mainly female foreign nationals with the aim of fleecing them of their hard-earned money under various disguise.
Professional boxing has suffered its second death in less than a week after Argentinian fighter Hugo Alfredo “Dinamita” Santillan died on Thursday from injuries sustained in the ring. He was 23.
Santillan’s death comes only days after Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev died from injuries he suffered during a fight last Friday. The 28-year-old was placed into a medically induced coma after the fight but died on Tuesday.
Santillan, a super lightweight, was fighting against Uruguay’s Eduardo Javier Abreu in Buenos Aires on Wednesday night. According to local reports, his nose started to bleed in the fourth round but he finished the fight. However, as the result of the bout – a draw – was announced, he fainted and was taken to hospital.
The chairman of Abak Local Government area, Akwa Ibom, Barrister Imoh Williams has been suspended by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly after his aides were seen in a viral clip assaulting an artisan.
The Akwa Ibom governor, Udom Emmanuel, also condemned the assault, describing it as “unacceptable in a civilised society and does not represent our core values”.
The assembly in a plenary on Thursday, directed Williams to proceed on indefinite suspension and mandated its committee on local government to investigate the incident and report back to the House within a month.
The artisan, Godwin Abraham, was assaulted at the premises of the local government council in Abak, on April 13, 2019, by two men said to be aides of Mr Williams when he came to ask for his N75, 000 payment of some decoration jobs he did for the chairman.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked the Federal Government of Nigeria to allow the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN),
Shiekh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, to come to Iran for medical treatment.
The Prosecutor-General of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammed Montazeri, made this request on behalf of the Iranian government.
According to AhlulBayt News Agency, an Iran-based news organisation, Montazeri said this in a letter on Saturday.
He also called on the Nigerian judiciary, to grant bail to El-Zakzaky who is the leader of all Shi’ites in Nigeria.
Montazeri who described El-Zakzakky’s current medical condition as a source of worry to his country, also criticised the federal government’s handling of the crisis.
The letter read in part, “I, as the prosecutor general of the Islamic Republic of Iran, urge the Nigerian judicial authorities (to take steps) in line with their judicial independence and support for a captive citizen, and provide the ground for his release and transfer him to the Islamic Republic of Iran for treatment.”
Iran, which is the stronghold of the Shi’a Muslim faith, has been demanding the release of El-Zakzaky.

King A J Turner, a traditional ruler in Bayelsa State, has called on the Police and the Department of State Services to take prompt action on a petition he submitted against the Governor, Seriake Dickson over alleged threat to life.
Turner had, in the petition alleged a threat to his life by the governor, through a direct telephone call to his son.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Idris Usman, the royal father stated that his petition, written by his legal representatives, “has been submitted to the Inspector General of Police and the Director general of the Department of State Security, and awaiting action from the security agencies”.
The statement further called on “the DSS and Nigerian Police not to treat such a serious matter, which involves threat to life, with kid gloves”.
Turner, who claimed he is being owed close to N2 billion for contracts executed in favour of the Bayelsa State Government, “had alleged in his petition that the governor had told his son that ‘if it is war, he [Dickson] is ready for it’ and that he would go to any length to prosecute it”.
The statement assured that “King AJ turner will continue to advocate for peaceful coexistence of all his people, regardless of party affiliations or political leaning, and urges all Bayelsa sons to do the same as the ultimate goal is the development of the state and bettering the lot of her people”.
Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari will depart Abuja on Friday for Monrovia, Liberia to attend the 172nd Independence Anniversary Celebrations of the country.
A statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, said apart from being the Special Guest of Honour at the event, Buhari would receive “The Grand Cordon of the Knighthood of Venerable Order of the Pioneers,” Republic of Liberia’s highest national honour.
The award is presented by the government for outstanding and distinguished service in international affairs, government, religion, art, science or commerce, and also for singular acts of philanthropy and deeds of heroism and valour.
Buhari will be accompanied by Governors Kayode Fayemi, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and Mai Mala Buni of Ekiti, Kwara and Yobe States respectively, as well as the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mustapha Sulaiman, and other top government officials.
The President is expected back in the country later on Friday.
The Presidency has reacted to reports that Leah Sharibu, one of the Dapchi schoolgirls abducted last year has been killed.
Grace Taku, an aid worker with Non-Governmental Organisation, Action Against Hunger, who was kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists on July 18, had claimed in a “proof of life video” that Leah alongside one Alice had been killed by the insurgents because of the Federal Government’s inability to “do something”.
Although Taku did not expressly state whether it was Leah Sharibu or another Leah that was killed, many assumed immediately that it was Sharibu that was being referred to thereby causing shockwaves across social media.
In his reaction, however, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said in a Facebook post that negotiations for the release of all those in captivity were still ongoing.
Shehu, who did not say if Sharibu was alive or not, said the Presidency had been briefed on the matter and that action would be taken.
He wrote, “The Presidency has been briefed by the responsible government agency about the disturbing video showing our citizens, the humanitarian aid workers held captive. The Presidency has been given assurances that contact is being made and the captors are being talked to.
“Beside these aid workers, there are some others about whom this engagement is about-Leah Sharibu, a religious leader and all the others. These discussions have been ongoing even before this time and what this latest incident has done is to bring urgency to the efforts that the secret service is making.
Government is making contacts, in the hope that the captors will see reason to not visit hardship or even harm on these innocent individuals.”
In the video which was released on Thursday, Taku also called on the Christian Association of Nigeria to come to her rescue.
The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Prisca Mupfumira on allegations of corruption.
A senior ZACC official told Xinhua Thursday morning that Mupfumira was currently being interviewed at the commission’s offices.
ZACC was recently granted arresting powers through a Statutory Instrument.
“Yes, we have picked her up. We are currently interviewing her, but she is not going back home,” the source said.
The corruption allegations emanate from an audit report on the National Social Security Authority which reportedly unearthed various financial transgressions at the institution.
She becomes the first Cabinet minister to be arrested on corruption charges since President Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed the current team in 2018.
The state-run Herald newspaper also confirmed the news by Twitter.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has transmitted the list of commissioners to the House of Assembly.
Chief Press Secretary Taiwo Adisa confirmed the list was submitted in a sealed envelope yesterday,
adding that it is expected to be opened and read at the House of Assembly today.

The body of the 23-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member was sent to his parents in Zaria, Kaduna State, on Wednesday.

Is this real or they intend to continue their fight? Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and his predecessor in office, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who have been at loggerheads over the politics of the state, exchanged pleasantries and shook hands at the presidential policy dialogue convened by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday at the presidential villa, Abuja.
The two men appeared to have temporarily buried the hatchet as they exchanged greeted each other flanked by Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State and business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, before the commencement of the dialogue attended by other state governors, captains of industry, top government officials and other stakeholders.
The governor had accused the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) of not allowing him the free hand to administer the state as its chief executive.
