Soldiers allegedly gang-rape AAUA student at checkpoint... and witness says it's not the first time

Some soldiers have allegedly r-ped a female student (name withheld) of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.

The incident allegedly happened on Wednesday evening at the military checkpoint at Ikare Akoko in Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to a source, the soldiers, who were attached to the Ikare Akoko checkpoint, allegedly r-ped the lady, a 300-level student at AAUA, while she was returning from the campus.

The source, who identified one of the soldiers, alleged that the soldiers took turns to s-xually assault the victim.

He said one of the soldiers at the checkpoint allegedly ordered the victim to get down from a vehicle she and others were travelling in, and took her into a cubicle at the back of the checkpoint where the soldiers allegedly forcefully had s-x with her.

A student of the institution who witnessed the incident but who did not want her name in print for fear of intimidation and harassment confirmed the incident.

She said, “We went to Ikare Police Station to report the incident and then rushed her to Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, for examination and treatment.

“As I’m talking to you, she is at the hospital and doctors confirmed that she was r-ped.”

The eyewitness said it was not the first time such a thing would be happening at the military checkpoint in the town.

A Police source at the Ikare Police Station, who confirmed that the incident was reported at the station around 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, said the Police had stepped into the matter.

The source confirmed that the name of a Lance Corporal was mentioned in the statement written by the complainant.

“The matter was reported here, but I  won’t say more on it. When we complete our investigation, it would be sent to the headquarters in Akure,” he stated.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, however, said he was not aware of the incident.

The management of the AAUA said it had commenced investigation into the matter and had constituted a panel of inquiry to examine the allegation.

The Head of Media and Protocol Unit of the university, Mr. Victor Akinpelumi, confirmed that the management of the institution was aware of the incident and had initiated an investigation into it.

Rwanda denies closing border againt Congo DR

Rwanda’s health minister said the border with Democratic Republic of the Congo remained open on Thursday, appearing to contradict an earlier statement that the frontier was closed near the Ebola-hit Congolese city of Goma.

“The border was never closed and it is not closed,” Diane Gashumba told reporters as she sat next to the state minister of foreign affairs, Olivier Nduhungirehe, who earlier said it was shut.

Slowdowns in traffic at the border had been caused by increased screening for Ebola not a shutdown, Gashumba said.

Plane lands on US ROAD after fuel system malfunction

Authorities say a small plane landed on a busy stretch of road in Washington state, stunning drivers but hurting no one.

The Washington State Patrol says the single-propeller KR2 aircraft landed Thursday on the street in the city of Parkland, south of Tacoma.

Trooper Johnna Batiste says the pilot was able to land during a break in traffic after a fuel system malfunction caused the plane to stall. Video shows it stopping just before an intersection.

Driver Dennis Diessner told Seattle TV station KOMO that the plane came so close to his car that he thought he could have reached out and touched it. He says he pulled over to make sure the pilot was OK.

Batiste says a trooper who was nearby helped the pilot push the plane into a parking lot.

Ex-Kwara assemblyman Adebayo docked for land fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has docked a former member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Muhammed Adebayo on a six-count charge of land fraud.

He was charged on Thursday before Justice Sikiru Oyinloye of the Kwara State High Court,

Count two of the charges reads: “That you, Mohammed Adebayo, sometimes in July 2013 in Ilorin within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N950,000 (Nine Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) only from one Mary Omowunmi Kolade on the false pretence that three plots of land (situated at Molete, Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State) which you sold to her belonged to you, a representation you knew to be false punishable under section 1 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences.”

Herbalist who r-ped, impregnated daughter who later died is jailed 21 years

An Evboriaria Chief Magistrate Court in Benin, Edo State, on Thursday convicted a 52-year-old herbalist, Jacob Alonge, for r-ping his daughter, Gift, at their home at Ososo village, Akoko-Edo.

The herbalist was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment without the option of fine.

Earlier, the prosecution told the court that the convict, who turned his daughter to a sex slave for several years, also instructed her never to sleep with any other man.

Aside from r-ping the 17-year-old girl repeatedly and impregnating her, he procured abortion for her and shaved the hair in her private parts.

Gift had become pregnant a second time when the matter came to public knowledge and he was arrested by the police and arraigned in court.

The pregnant girl, however, died along with four others in an accident along Benin-Auchi highway, while traveling from Ososo to Benin on the way to the court.

Among the dead were Gift’s uncle, two workers of a non-governmental organisation, Brave Heart Initiative, helping Gift with the case, and the cab driver.

But after learning of the auto crash, Jacob who had earlier pleaded guilty to the counts against him and was about to be sentenced, changed his plea on the day his daughter and the others died.

The court on Thursday concluded his trial and sentenced him to five years on the first count of possession of fetish wrap of Gift’s pubic hair; two years for r-ping and impregnating her and 14 years for repeated s-xual assault.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, D. I. Adamaigbo, said the counts should run concurrently.

US pulls out of nuclear treaty with Russia

The US is set to formally withdraw from a nuclear treaty with Russia, raising fears of a new arms race.

The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) was signed by US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987.

It banned missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 km (310-3,400 miles).

But earlier this year the US and Nato accused Russia of violating the pact by deploying a new type of cruise missile, which Moscow has denied.

The Americans said they had evidence that Russia had deployed a number of 9M729 missiles - known to Nato as SSC-8. This accusation was then put to Washington's Nato allies, which all backed the US claim.

President Donald Trump announced in February that the US would withdraw from the pact if Russia didn't come into compliance, and set the deadline for 2 August.

Russian President Vladimir Putin suspended his country's own obligations to the treaty shortly afterwards.

Saudi Arabia allows women to travel independently

Women in Saudi Arabia can now travel abroad without a male guardian's permission, royal decrees say.

Under the new rule announced on Friday, women over the age of 21 can apply for a passport without authorisation from a male guardian.

All adults can now apply for a passport and travel, putting women on an equal footing to men.

The royal decrees also grant women the right to register child birth, marriage or divorce.

They also cover employment regulations that expands work opportunities for women. Under the rule, all citizens have the right to work without facing any discrimination based on gender, disability or age.

Until now, Saudi women have had to seek permission from a male guardian - a husband, father or other male relative to obtain a passport or travel abroad.

Lawyer says Bayelsa communities under epidemics threat after feasting on Whale

Bayelsa-based lawyer, Barr. Timila Jenkins Okponipere has raised an alarm over imminent outbreak of cholera and other waterborne diseases in some Bayelsa communities.

Okponipere made his position known following the pollution of the entire coastline of Brass and surrounding environment with the blood of a dead decomposing Whale which has washed ashore.

Recall last weekend, a whale of about 30ft washed ashore Ijaw kiri community water front in Brass Local Government Area.

The lawyer, who frowned at the feasting of the dead aquatic animals by indigenes of those communities without first establishing knowledge of what killed it, urged government to cordon off the area and immediately commence the process of evacuation of the remains of the dead sea mammal.

According to him, “About three days ago, a gigantic sea mammal, found itself stranded ashore at one of the fishing settlements on Brass waterfront in Brass LGA of Bayelsa State. The sea mammal is widely believed to be one of the rare species of Whales which are gradually going extinct.

“In civilised societies, the helpless Whale would be helped back into its natural habitat by concerned citizens but the inhabitants who live within and around the fishing settlement where the whale mistakenly found itself; couldn’t believe their luck: very much like Vultures and Hyenas, they descended on the unfortunate mammal with all manner of cutting implements to harvest pounds and pounds of flesh.”

The lawyer said further, “isn’t it most shameful, sickening and despicable that, the Government of the state has failed, refused and/or otherwise neglected to issue a statement regarding the unfortunate incident.”

He also appeal that post-mortem activities be carried out by the appropriate health Institution, to ascertain whether or not health-related challenges might arise from the incident.

We are set to drag Nasiru Jibril, NFF to Senate - Real Sapphire football academy

Real Sapphire academy are already making arrangements to officially report the NFF to the legislative arm of the federal government of Nigeria, according to their Sports director, Francis Ogete.

We are putting plans together to report the continuous fraudulent act of the TMS department of the NFF in releasing international transfer certificates(ITC) to players to play outside Nigeria without the knowledge of the clubs they have contracts with here in Nigeria.

For people that are probably doubting we have two cases that are well documented. Sometimes last year, we got a deal for one of our players in Europe, has we progressed on the deal Nasiru Jibril ensured that he delayed on issuing the ICT until the transfer season closed. After the transfer was canceled Nasiru pleaded to the academy to accept his apologies but the question to be asked here is if such acts are professional? Does such acts help to develop academies that the NFF doesn’t give a kobo.

Let me also remind Nigerians that Kazeem Balemo who was part of the five players we took to Egypt that ended up absconding was issued an ITC by Nasiru Jibril through Nnewi United FC.

When we heard of kazeem’s transfer in Egypt we reached out to Nasiru who immediately voiced out that it was the Chairman of Nnewi United that claimed that the player plays for him and that they needed the certificate urgently.

The big question here is this, is the data of the NFF unavailable? Did the Nnewi United Chairman bribe his way through?

This incompetence of Nasiru Jibril of the NFF must stop, this mere incompetence has cost us hundreds of millions of Naira that we would have generated from transfers which would have helped our academy develop more.

Let me quickly add to it that the academy has written proves to this allegations and we dare Nasiru and Nnewi United to come out and denial these allegations.

I can tell you that the two of them apologized then and Kazeem’s ICT was immediately reversed.

We intend to gather signatures of other clubs and academies that have continuously suffered from such football calamities and then push it forward to the legislative arm and the minister of sports.

Nigerian military denies burying 1000 soldiers secretly

The Defence Headquarters on Thursday pushed back against news reports that the military had been secretly dumping the remains of fallen heroes of Boko Haram war in unmarked mass graves.

Military spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu said The Wall Street Journal was ignorant of military burial procedure when it reported on Thursday morning that fallen Nigerian soldiers of Boko Haram insurgency were being transported to an unmarked gravesite near Maiduguri for a secret and undignified burial.

The American newspaper quoted families of fallen servicemen as saying that the military was untidy in its handling of the tragic deaths of their loved ones.

It also reported that the military sometimes failed to open up on the fate of fallen soldiers to their families.

Prior to running the story, the paper said it made several attempts to speak with the Nigerian military and the Buhari administration officials without success.

The report drew a collective outrage from Nigerians, with opposition politicians like Atiku Abubakar expressing serious concerns and demanding urgent investigation into the allegations.

The military, however, strongly denied the pictures painted by the Wall Street Journal, saying fallen uniformed men were adequately honoured before burial and the burial ground was officially designated for military use.

Mr Nwachukwu, a colonel, said the Armed Forces of Nigeria had a rich and solemn tradition for the interment of their fallen heroes.

“Therefore, it must be unambiguously clarified that the Armed Forces of Nigeria does not indulge in secret burials, as it is sacrilegious and a profanity to extant ethos and traditions of the Nigerian military.

“In tandem with the traditions of the Armed Forces, fallen heroes are duly honoured and paid the last respect in befitting military funeral of international standard.

“It features funeral parade, grave site oration, solemn prayers for the repose of departed souls by Islamic and Christian clerics, as well as gun salutes, aside other military funeral rites,” he said.

Mr Nwachukwu explained that the cemetery described in the publication, near Maimalari Cantonment, was an officially designated military cemetery with a cenotaph erected in honour of the fallen heroes.

Female FAAN officer allegedly steals pilgrims $600

A female officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the Yola International Airport has been arrested by the Adamawa Police Command allegedly for stealing from people travelling for this year’s Hajj.

The officer got into trouble when she picked 300 dollars each from the luggage of her two victims when she was supposed to be searching for prohibited items prelude to their clearance for boarding the plane for takeoff.

Her two victims were said to have raised alarm after they observed that their Basic Traveling Allowance (BTA) of 800 Dollars each had run short by 300 dollars each.

Their alarm attracted the attention of other security operatives, one of who disclosed that following the incident, which occurred on Monday, the female officer was taken away and after a thorough search, the total 600 Dollars, and another sum in Nigerian currency, N1,500, was found hidden in her artificial hair over which she wore a barrette cap.

Recalling the process of the in-house investigation of the lady, the airport security source said, “At the initial stage when she was interrogated, she pretended that she didn’t commit any theft on the intending pilgrims. She insisted that nothing like money was on her.

“But to the surprise of us all at the investigation room, the said monies were traced concealed in her head covered with official barrette. There and then she became very weak, sweating all over her body in shame.”

The Yola Airport management is said to have issued a query on the erring officer which she was said to have answered before she was handed to the police for further action.

Speaking on the development, the Yola Airport Manager, Adamu Sheilk, said as a department, they had done the next best thing by forwarding the case to their corporate headquarters in Abuja for a final decision.

The spokesman of the Adamawa State Police Command, DSP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, who confirmed the development, said the affected FAAN officer was already being interrogated by the Criminal Investigation Department, after which she would be taken to court for prosecution
