Female banker steals customer’s BVN, then his money

A female banker Gladys Udia, has been docked in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, charged with seven-counts of conspiracy, stealing, forgery and alteration to the tune of N3,476,700.

Udia was arraigned today by the EFCC before Justice M. L Abubakar of the Federal High Court.

One of the counts read: “That you Gladys Udia and Dominic Okon a.k.a Paul (now at large) between the 24th and 31st of July, 2019, at Port Harcourt, Rivers State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, whilst you were staff of Union Bank Plc stole the sum of (N3,434,000,00) Three Million, Four Hundred and Thirty Four Thousand Naira only, property of one Benjamin Akerele and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap. C 38 of the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) 2007 read together with Section 1 (1) (b) of the Failed Banks (Recovery of Debts) and Financial Malpractices in Banks Act, Cap B3 of the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria)2007”.

Udia’s trouble started when a petitioner, Benjamin Akerele, a customer of Union Bank, Port Harcourt, sought the intervention of the EFCC over the theft of his money in the bank.

The petitioner alleged that sometimes between July 24 and August 6, 2019, a total sum of N3,476,700.00(Three Million, Four Hundred and Seventy Six Thousand, Seven Hundred Naira only) was fraudulently withdrawn from his account domiciled in a Union Bank’s Sokoto branch. Investigation carried out by the bank’s internal affairs unit revealed that the principal suspect, Gladys Udia, a staff of the Ikwerre Road branch in Port Harcourt was captured by the bank’s CCTV Camera taking photographs of the customer’s BVN printout page with her mobile phone and sent same to her accomplices, who subsequently carried out a limit enhancement on the customer’s account at the Bori branch, thereby granting them access to the account.

Investigations also revealed that between July 25, 28 and August 6, 2019, a total sum of N3, 476, 700 was fraudulently transferred by Udia from the account of Akerele to several accounts of her accomplices.

Justice Abubakar granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1,000.000 and one surety in like sum. The surety must be a civil servant on grade level 10 and resident in Port Harcourt. The surety must be verified by the prosecution.

The Judge also ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody pending the fulfillment of her bail conditions, while the matter was adjourned till October 10, 2019 for continuation of trial

Labour set October 16 for strike over minimum wage

Organised labour on Wednesday threatened to embark on a nationwide strike from Oct. 16, if the Federal Government fails to reconvene the meeting of the committee negotiating the consequential adjustment on the new minimum wage.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) at a meeting with the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC)-Trade Union Side) in Abuja, warned that labour would not guarantee industrial peace in the country if their demands were not met by government.

Public sector workers in Nigeria have been contending with frustrations from day to day, following the inability of the Federal Government and organized labour to reach a deal over a new wage that came into effect more than six months ago.

In a statement jointly signed by NLC the President, Ayuba Wabba, his TUC counterpart, Quadri Olaleye and Simon Anchaver, Acting Chairman of JNPSNC (Trade Union Side), the unionists said that labour had all along demonstrated restraint and patience with government.

They noted that labour had to moderate its initial position of having 66.6 per cent upward salary adjustment for workers on salary grade level 07 to grade level 17 by accepting downward adjustment of 29 per cent for officers on salary levels 07-14 and 24 per cent adjustment for officers on salary grade levels 15-17.

“Despite this patriotic gesture, government has kept insisting that it can only pay 11 per cent for officers on grade levels 07-14 and 6.5 per cent consequential wage increase to public workers for officers on levels 15-17.”

Presidency debunks rumoured third-term bid for Buhari

The Presidency has described as “Internet-based gossip and un-informed media commentary,” insinuations that President Muhammadu Buhari will embark on a third term ambition with effect from 2023.

The Presidency said that Buhari would “serve his full second elected term in office, ending 2023 – and then there shall be a general election in which he will not be a candidate.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media and Publicity), Garba Shehu, made the clarification in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said, “There are no circumstances – nor set of circumstances – under which President Buhari may seek to amend the constitution regarding the two-term  limit on holding office as President.

“President Buhari intends to serve his full second elected term in office, ending 2023 – and then there shall be a general election in which he will not be a candidate.

“There is not even the faintest possibility that this will change. It is important to note that there was a past attempt to change the constitution to allow for the-then incumbent president to stand for a third term.

JAMB official who claimed snake swallowed money tried to bribe auditor – Witness

A prosecution witness, Patrick Obilo, who is also an auditor with the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, has narrated how the chief accounting officer of the Makurdi Zonal Office of the board, Samuel Umoru, and a clerical officer in the same office, Mrs. Philomina Chieshe, attempted to bribe a JAMB auditor, Mallam Ibrahim Oba, with N50,000.

The bribe, Obilo informed Justice Peter Affen of the FCT High Court, Maitama, Abuja, was meant to prevent the auditor from carrying out a financial audit of the zonal office.

Umoru and Chieshe were first and second defendants respectively in a charge brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the disappearance of N35m belonging to JAMB.

During Obilo’s re-examination by the prosecution counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, he disclosed that Oba was sent to the Makurdi office of JAMB in 2016 for a routine examination of the account books and consignment notes, which showed quantities of items supplied such as e-facility cards used to check and print results, change of course card, scratch cards, question and answer cards, receipts or tellers.

According to a statement by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, on Tuesday, the witness revealed that while in Makurdi, Chieshe visited Oba’s hotel room with an envelope containing N50,000 as “gift” from her boss, Umoru, and urged him to return to Abuja.

The auditor, according to Obilo, sensed danger and reported the situation to the head of JAMB’s Audit Unit, James Ochijele, in Abuja, who ordered that the N50,000 be paid into the board’s account. Ochijele had to replace Oba with Obilo for the same assignment in the Makurdi office.

While examining the account books in the Makurdi Office, Obilo said he discovered a shortfall in the proceeds from the sales of e-facility cards and change of course forms to the tune of N35.4m which were not remitted to the board’s account.

The statement said, “Asked for explanation, Chieshe began to cry as she gave all manners of justifications for the disappearance of the money, including a tale that a mystery snake had been swallowing the money in Umoru’s office, even as it was kept in a safe.

“In another incredible story, she claimed that a mermaid appeared to her in her bedroom to attack her at various times and that her house maid is a witch.” The trial judge adjourned the matter to January 21, 2020, for continuation of trial.

Cops foil Lagos bank robbery, arrest one

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one suspect in connection with a failed robbery attack on a bank in the Olorunshogo area of Mushin.

It was gathered that the suspect, Mahmoud Mohammed, and his gang members, on September 24 around 3.50pm, attempted to rob a bank before they were resisted by personnel from the Olosan Police Station, led by the Divisional Police Officer, SP Ayodele Arogbo.

Punch Metro learnt that the four-man gang, who came on two motorcycles to rob the bank, engaged the policemen in a gun battle but retreated with bullet wounds.

It was gathered that the DPO, who was on a surveillance patrol of the area, came across the suspects on two motorcycles.

Punch correspondent learnt that Mohammed was arrested with four locally-made short guns and 45 pieces of live ammunition.

The suspect was said to have confessed that his gang members specialised in robbing banks and their customers in Lagos and other states, adding that they had successfully robbed many victims based on the information received.

“Once a customer withdraws money from the bank, we will monitor and confirm if it is a huge withdrawal. We will then trail such a person to their house and rob him or her. We have successfully done that on several occasions. Recently, we robbed a woman in Ijegun through the same method, but we didn’t hurt her,” he was quoted as saying.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, who confirmed the arrest, said investigation had commenced into the matter, adding that efforts were being made to arrest other members of the gang.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, had ordered that the case be transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for further investigation.

Enugu pastor kills girlfriend over tricycle purchase

A pastor with a new generation church, the Royal Prince Prophetic Ministry, Chukwuemeka Eze, has been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Miss Ogechukwu Ogbodo.

Eze allegedly killed his girlfriend for refusing to buy a tricycle for him.

Southern City News gathered that the suspect had been in a relationship with the deceased, who hailed from Amagunze in the Nkanu-East Local Government Area of the state for five years.

Ogechukwu, who was residing at the Railway Quarter, was a recharge card sales agent until her death.

She was said to have returned home on July 15, 2019, with over N2m, which she intended to deposit in the bank the next day.

However, the suspect, after discovering that the deceased had gone home with a huge amount of money, paid her a visit and allegedly killed her.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the development and said Eze was arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

Amaraizu stated that the suspect had after killing his girlfriend, ransacked her house and took the money and title documents to the deceased’s landed property.

The PPRO said Eze immediately used the money to procure musical instruments and carried out a total renovation of the church.

He added that the suspect had confessed to the crime.

Eze, according to the police spokesman, killed his girlfriend because she refused to purchase a tricycle for him though she had been buying tricycles for people in the community on hire purchase.

The PPRO added that the suspect was already helping the police in their investigation and would soon be charged.

America's first cannabis cafe opens in California

America's first cannabis restaurant has opened in West Hollywood, offering diners an array of weed products and hoping to rival Amsterdam's famed coffee shops.

Called Lowell Farms: A Cannabis Cafe, the much-hyped 240-seat establishment is open to people 21 and over, who can order from a cannabis menu just like they would a wine bottle.

On offer are pre-rolled joints starting at USD 18 dollars apiece, highly potent concentrates, some edibles, and accessories such as bongs, pipes and dabbing devices.

"It's amazing to be a part of making history, I never thought I would have been," said executive chef Andrea Drummer as she surveyed diners at the soft opening of the eatery.

"It's important to have a safe space to consume in a very communal setting," she added. "The only other place that I know that to be the case is Amsterdam."

She said customers were flying in from different parts of the country, and one couple was even traveling from Britain, to take part in the grand opening on Tuesday.

EFCC grills INEC officials over allowance diversion

The Sokoto Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested INEC officials in Zamfara State over allegations of fraud.

Those arrested are Hassan Sidi Aliyu, Administrative Secretary; Hussain Jafar, Head of Operations; Abdullahi Yusuf Abubakar, State Accountant; and Abdulmumin Usman.

The EFCC said they were arrested over an alleged case of conspiracy, breach of trust and criminal diversion of Ad Hoc staff allowance to the tune of N84.7 million.

The petitioner, Abdullahi Nasiru, who wrote on behalf of all presiding officers that worked for INEC during the 2019 Presidential and Gubernatorial elections in Zamfara State, alleged that the ad-hoc staff were denied payment of their N6,000 movement allowance each for the two elections.

He further alleged that what the Commission paid to them was different from what other states paid their Adhoc staff.

EFCC said efforts were being made by the Commission to recover the money criminally diverted by the three INEC heads of department and Electoral Officers of the 14 local governments in Zamfara State.

The suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as investigation is completed, spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren said in a statement.

Lagos begins investigation into disease resurgence in Queens College

The Lagos State Government says it has commenced an investigation into the purported outbreak of airborne, flu-like illness, among students of Queens College and other schools in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, said in a statement on Tuesday that an investigative team set up by the ministry was dispatched, to unravel the cause of the illnesses.

While reviewing preliminary reports of the investigations conducted by the team, Mr Abayomi said that the surveillance team identified what appeared to be a sporadic increase in upper respiratory tract infections, characterised by cough, catarrh, fever and weakness, across some schools.

According to him, the team has since visited Queens College and investigations are ongoing.

”Findings, according to the review of health records in the school sick bay, revealed that 89 students attended the clinic with influenza-like illnesses,” he said.

The commissioner said that a walk-through inspection to other facilities in the school revealed that environmental sanitation and water supply were optimal, but could be improved.

He also said that the incident was not an outbreak of any sort but an excessive number of reported cases, that needed to be investigated.

Mr Abayomi said that nasal swab samples would be collected from pupils for confirmation of the cause of the illness.

”As we await a comprehensive report of the investigation being conducted, I would like to appeal to stakeholders of Queens College, other affected schools and residents of Lagos State to remain calm.

”All should ensure strict adherence to personal and environmental hygiene, at all times, ” he said.

He advised all schools in Lagos to adopt basic precautionary measures against diseases and illnesses by teaching and ensuring good health practices.

Mr Abayomi also urged schools to promote personal hygiene and provide adequate hand-washing points within the school premises.

”They must also commence and continue to raise awareness about respiratory etiquette, hold food handlers and vendors to the highest health and hygiene check protocols, as stipulated in the law, and as practised world over,” he said.

Mr Abayomi urged students to avoid sharing personal items such as spoons, handkerchiefs, toothbrushes, among others.

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott SPLIT

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott will divide their time with one-year-old daughter Stormi down the middle amid their recent split.

Jenner, 22, and Scott, 28, have had 'no issues' in agreeing to 50/50 custody in their time apart, insiders close to the former duo have said.

They have not involved lawyers in the process, insiders said, and are unlikely to bicker over child support, as both are financially independent, according to the source.

The Houston-based rapper and Los Angeles-born makeup mogul had 'been drifting apart for a while,' and 'they tried hard to make it work, but ultimately they need to take some time apart,' insiders said.

While the rapper and the Life of Kylie personality 'have broke up and gotten back together several times,' it's not a sure thing they will rekindle their romance in this instance, the insider said.

Scott is currently residing at a West Hollywood domicile he's had for years, and has taken some of his belongings from the Kylie Cosmetics entrepreneur's home, insiders told the outlet.

An insider close to Kylie said that the pair 'are taking some time but not done,' as while 'they still have some trust issues ... their problems have stemmed more from the stress of their lifestyles.'

24 year-old woman claims she's sold her virginity to a 'Tory MP' for £1.3m

A 24-year-old woman claims she has sold her virginity to a 'Tory MP' for £1.3m. Lia says she met the unnamed politician through an online escort site.

She claims that the Tory MP was the winning bidder at an 'auction' for her virginity and that they dated for two months before she agreed to go ahead with the deal.

During that time he was her sugar daddy spoiling her with a monthly budget of £17,700, she says.

There is no evidence to support her claims.

Speaking in a video on the website, the 24-year-old explained how she decided to auction her virginity on the website because she wanted to be able to afford to start her own property portfolio.

She said: "I'm already starting some master classes and seminars on this topic so I'm trying to learn as much as I can.

"It would be great to meet someone who has that kind of experience, I think that would be really great."

Speaking to the Daily Mail Lia said she has a good relationship with her mother, who she still lives with.

She said: "We have a good relationship and she understands that most women will eventually part with the man they had their first time with and will be disappointed.

"It is less painful to get money instead of a broken heart."

Lia said that the man 'likes to pleasure my feet'.

She added: "[During] the two months in which we got to know each other, he wanted to try out a bunch of things unknown to me.

"However, I quickly showed him my limits. I like him a lot, but I think we live in two different worlds."

Cristiano Ronaldo discusses his strict diet regime but still can't live without pizza

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the world's top athletes - but even he has a guilty pleasure. The Juventus superstar is known for his impressive physique, honed by a strict diet.

Yet he has revealed he is prone to eating the occasional pizza with his son as his cheat meal.

Ronaldo told YouTube channel ChrisMD : "The key is to take care of your body, train, do your recovery and eat properly.

"Although sometimes I do eat pizza with my son otherwise it would be boring."

He is believed to only treat himself occasionally, however, as he generally sticks to a strict diet to maintain his imperious physical condition.

He transformed his body from a skinny teenager who first arrived at Manchester United in 2003 to a supreme athlete showing no signs of slowing up at the age of 34.

Discussing his transformation, Ronaldo added: "It’s true, I was skinny. I had no muscle.

“So I made a decision at 11 years old, I knew I had a lot of talent, but I decided that I was going to work harder than everybody.
"I started sneaking out of the dormitory at night to go work out. I got bigger and faster.

“I would walk on to the field, and the people who used to whisper, 'Yeah, but he’s so skinny,' now they would be looking at me like it was the end of the world."

"The last five years I start to enjoy this process of seeing me outside of football, so who knows what will happen in the next year or two?" He stated.

For the time being, he is still showing himself to be capable of performing at the highest level, even with some pizzas in his diet.
