A businesswoman identified as Ejioma, on Monday told an Ojo Magistrates' Court in Lagos how she paid back “in kind” part of N1.1 million loan she allegedly took from a man.
The defendant, a trader who sells bags of rice, pleaded not guilty to two counts of obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.
The woman, who spoke in pidgin English , told the court that the said loan was obtained after a friend introduced her to the businessman.
She said that although she was given the loan, she also delivered some bags of rice to the complainant with an understanding to pay up the balance.
Besides, the defendant informed the court that even before she was given the loan by the complainant, she had to pay him “in kind” on three different occasions in a hotel.
The Prosecutor, Mr Simon Uche, had earlier told the court that the woman obtained a loan of N 1.1 million for rice business from one Emma, a businessman, with a promise to pay back the money in six months.
The prosecutor said that the woman refused to pay up the loan and had been evasive since then. He said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya granted the woman N250,000 bail with two sureties in like sum. He adjourned the case until December 9 for trial.
The management of BUA Group has promised to crash prices of major food items it produces like sugar, flour, pastas and many others. Since 2016, when Nigeria slipped into recession, the purchasing power of Nigerians has remained low.
Though inflation has been on a steady decline, prices of food items have continued to rise and last month, the government closed borders to tackle smuggling of food items into the nation. This action has caused prices of foodstuff to skyrocket at the market and at the moment, the price of a 50kg bag of rice is N24,000 to N26,000. Before the border closure, it was selling for N14,000 to N16,000.
WHAT WOULD SUPPORT THE CRASHING OF PRICES?
General Manager of BUA Ports and Terminals, Mr Mohammed Lile, speaking ahead of the commissioning of the company’s foods manufacturing complex in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, this month, told CNBC Africa that efforts would be made to bring down prices of its products.
Mr Lile explained that the huge factory in Port Harcourt was built in line with the federal government of Nigeria’s policy on self sufficiency, stating that the location of the plant gave it a good advantage to bring down prices of products that would be produced in the complex.
He said the railway lines would reduce cost of transportation which would make it easy to access parts of the country, adding that the sea was also available for ships to berth with raw materials that would be processed at the complex. He then noted that use of gas would supplement the lack of power that faced production in the country.
Mr Lile, in the interview with CNBC Africa, noted that the $400 million project which started over 5 years ago comprises three factories: a sugar refinery; a flour (pasta) mill; and a power plant.
A lot of abuse have gone on in Nigerian universities, and the head of the institutions only pretend to be outraged when there is a video evidence. The unlucky lecturer caught on tape will become the sacrificial lamb. Others will continue but be a little bit more careful.
The University of Lagos has finally shut down the ‘Cold Room’, where lecturers allegedly s*xually harass students.
This was disclosed by Taiwo Oloyede, the Principal Assistant Registrar (Communication Unit) of the university.
The ‘Cold Room’ was mentioned by a lecturer of the school, Boniface Igbeneghu, who was caught on video s*xually harassing an undercover journalist who posed as an admission seeker.
Mr Igbeneghu, in the BBC undercover documentary, described the secret place where lecturers meet to “touch students breast” at the staff club of the university.
“They call the place cold room,” he said. He then explained that female students must pay to have good grades.
“The so called ‘Cold Room’ is a Functions Room that may have been abused because this is a deviation from the purpose for which it was created (meetings, seminars, events, etc)” the university spokesperson said.
Mr Oloyede also confirmed an earlier report that Mr Igbeneghu had been suspended.

A dad's reluctance to change a tattoo of his children's names on his arm has threatened to tear his family apart.
On a Reddit post which has ignited a fierce debate, user tattoothrowaway77 explains that he has the names of his three offspring going down his arm, reading Andy, Sara and Kate (not actual names).
The tattoo was all done at the same time after his eldest Kate was born as the 42-
year-old 'knew she would be his last'.
The poster says: "My wife immediately supported her and made sure that I would too without any argument or else she would divorce me.
"It was a huge family issue for a while but eventually it was solved and everything has been good for the last little while.
"I'm slowly learning more and trying to accept my daughter and her new pronouns and her name change."
The issue arose when Athena and his wife sat him down this week to explain that the tattoo on his arm which still reads Andy was hurting his daughter and putting strain on their relationship.
His wife told him she wanted him to get the inking touched up to read correctly but he argued it wasn't that simple.
He says the change would require laser removal and a new tattoo being put in its place, neither of which he can afford.
When the dad argued the tattoo was a 'non issue', he says Athena yelled at him, calling him a s***ty father and telling him that if he doesn't support her there will be no place for him in her life.
His wife threatened to take the children to go and stay with her parents but he feels it's a 'bigger problem than it should be'.
He ends the post asking "I'm basically just wondering if I'm the a**hole in this situation?"
The question spilt the opinion of the commenters below.
One user said: "You're right in principle when it comes to the tattoo as an isolated issue in that tattoo removal is in fact costly and time-intensive.
"However, your tattoo IS an issue for Athena and I think what she really wants is for you to acknowledge that with her, particularly because it took you time to get to a place of acceptance."
This was echoed by another who added: "Reading between the lines, it sounds like 'I was so resistant to accepting my child was trans that my wife had to threaten to divorce me before I grudgingly accepted it'."
A medical doctor, Alabi Oyedeji, on Monday narrated to a Lagos State Special Offences Court how a principal, Samson Adeyemo, defiled twin sisters.
Oyedeji, who is a consultant at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and a forensic examiner at the Mirabel Centre, told the court that the victims informed him that the principal had sexual relationships with them between 2015 and 2016.
He added that the principal impregnated one of the victims in the course of the incessant intercourse.
The 30-year-old Adeyemo is standing trial before Justice Sherifat Solebo for allegedly having sexual intercourse with the 17-year-old twin sisters and impregnating one of them.
At Monday’s proceedings, Oyedeji, while being led in evidence by the prosecutor, M. S. Oshodi, said, “The principal, on several occasions, had sexual intercourse with one of the twins and she became pregnant. Her mother got to know about it and made an attempt to terminate the pregnancy.
“It was in the process of terminating the pregnancy that the other twin sister found out that the principal was equally having an affair with her sister. However, during the general observation of the victims, I discovered that they were both clinically stable.
“Other structures of the victims, like the urethra, were normal. But the vagina entrances had tags of the hymen or fragmented. The tags of hymen found at the vagina entries suggested repeated forceful penetration into their vaginas. I also took blood and urine samples of the victims, including appropriate screening test.”
One of the victims had earlier told the court that the principal kept a camp bed in his office, which he used whenever he wanted to have intercourse with her.
She said, “I was still in SS1 when the incident happened. On that day, I was in my classroom when the principal entered and asked if my class teacher was around. I said no. He then ordered me to follow him to his office. When we got to his office, he started calling me sweet names before removing my school uniform. He thereafter had sexual intercourse with me and instructed me not to tell anyone.
“He continued having sex with me over a long period of time until I became pregnant. I was unaware that I was pregnant until one of our neighbours noticed some changes in my body and informed my mother and when my mother confronted me with a slap, I told her that the principal had been having sex with me inside his office.
“My mum called the principal and asked him, and he admitted to impregnating me. He then told my mother that we should keep the baby but my mother refused. The principal begged my mother not to abort the pregnancy, but she refused and took me to a nurse to remove it.
“My mother told him that she could not allow me to carry a baby at a tender age. It was when my mother insisted on terminating the pregnancy that the principal gave us money for the abortion.”
Justice Solebo adjourned the matter till November 18, 2019, for the continuation of trial.

A jury found Amber Guyger guilty of murder on Tuesday for the killing of a black man, Botham Jean in September, 2018. The former Dallas police officer now faces 5 to 99 years in prison.
The jury deliberated on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning over whether Guyger was guilty of murder or manslaughter when she shot her upstairs neighbor on September 6, 2018. She was still in uniform when she fatally shot Jean, and had just ended her shift when she returned to the apartment complex where they both lived in Dallas.
Applause could be heard from the audience and the late Jean’s family could be seen in tears after the verdict was announced.
The case has received national attention following nationwide debate about police misconduct against people of color. Guyger is white and Jean was black. Judge Tammy Kemp reignited the debate on Monday after deciding the jury could consider the state’s “Castle Doctrine,” a legal exception that says a person in their home is not required to retreat before using deadly force on an intruder.
“This is a victory for black people in America,” Jean family attorney Lee Marritt told reporters after the verdict was announced.
Guyger was originally charged with manslaughter three days after the shooting took place. She was later fired by the Dallas Police Department and charges were increased to murder. The jury had to decide if she was guilty of either murder or the lesser charge of manslaughter.
In closing arguments on Monday, Guyger’s defense argued that the state had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that her actions weren’t self-defense.
“You don’t, as the jurors in this case, decide this case on emotion and sympathy,” defense attorney Toby Shook said, addressing the jury. “Who would not have sympathy for Botham Jean? Wonderful human being... but that is not part of your consideration as a juror.”
The prosecution argued that Guyger could not claim self-defense if she was the intruder in the wrong apartment, and that she missed key cues along her path from her car to Jean’s apartment that should have made her aware she was in the wrong place.
