Citizenship Act protests: Thousands held across India for defying ban

Indian police have detained thousands who defied a ban on protests against a controversial new citizenship law.

The ban has been imposed in parts of the capital Delhi, and throughout the states of Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.

Mobile data services are suspended in some parts of Delhi close to protest sites. There have been days of protests across India, some violent.

The new law offers citizenship to non-Muslim illegal immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Among those detained are Ramachandra Guha, a prominent historian and outspoken critic of the government, in the southern city of Bangalore; and political activist in Yogendra Yadav in Delhi.

But tens of thousands of people have still taken to the streets in Uttar Pradesh, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Patna, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Delhi and other cities - civil society groups, political parties, students, activists and ordinary citizens took to social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter, asking people to turn up and protest peacefully.

Woman arrested after baby rescued from bin in Greece

A 24-year-old woman has been arrested after a baby was rescued from a rubbish chute in the Greek city of Kalamata.

The baby, thought to be only days old, was discovered on Wednesday by a local woman who heard it crying from the bin.

The newborn baby's life was reportedly narrowly saved because a rubbish collection van was running late.

"The baby was fortunate in its misfortune... there was a delay in the day's collection," Kalamata's Mayor, Thanassis Vassilopoulos, said.

"The garbage trucks do not just load waste, they compress it," he added in an interview with Alpha TV.

The local woman who found the baby, Vassiliki Tsoni, said the child was found inside a paper bag, several metres down inside the stone rubbish store structure.

"The chute was half full. I was shouting, nobody was stopping to help," she told local website Newsit.

According to Ms Tsoni, some neighbours tried to alleviate her concerns and said the cry she heard must have been coming from a kitten and not a human.

Two police officers later arrived at the scene and were able to rescue the baby. The child was taken to hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery, according to local reports.

Police later confirmed the suspected mother of the baby, who is reportedly a Georgian national, was arrested for attempted murder.

African swine fever: Fears rise as virus spreads to Indonesia

Indonesia has become the latest Asian country to face an outbreak of African swine fever, a deadly pig virus devastating farmers across the region.

On Wednesday, the country's agriculture ministry said nearly 30,000 pigs have died from the disease in North Sumatra.

The virus is expected to wipe out more than half of China's pig herd this year.

Australia has grown increasingly concerned, stepping up biosecurity measures to keep swine fever out.

Although it's harmless to humans, the disease can kill pigs within a few days, and the fatality rate can be up to 100%, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The virus is particularly robust, and is able to survive for seven days without a host, and for months in frozen pork products.

Traditional music dying – Late Olatunji’ son

Olawale Yusuf Olatunji, son of the late Apala maestro, Yusuf Ajao Olatunji, has raised alarm over dearth of traditional music in Nigeria.

According to Olawale, whose father, the late Olatunji, pioneered Sakara/Apala music, traditional music which are reflection of Nigeria’s culture have been neglected by the youths for foreign music.

Yusuf made this lamentation during the maiden edition of Yusuf Ajao Olatunji Foundation’s end of the year get-together held at Obasanjo Presidential Library, Ogun State.

He appealed to stakeholders in the music industry and Southwest governors to find ways of promoting traditional music among the upcoming artistes.

He added that the Lyrics of traditional music such as Sakara of his late father is embedded and embraced in the Yoruba culture.

Speaking on Yusuf Ajao Olatunde Foundation, (YAO Foundation), Yusuf said the foundation was named after his father as a way of lending a helping hand to the needy, retain his father’s music career and also serve as blue print for other sakara upcoming artistes.

“Although my dad is dead, but his work lives. And in order to keep his legacy rolling, that is why we established this foundation as a way of mentoring sakara music artistes and promote them for better tomorrow.

“We cannot continue to throw away our culture, sense of reasoning for foreign language and culture. We need to go back to the basics which is traditional music. You will agree with me that, many so called Hip Hop music we have around today have no meaning or direct message to inspire the people anymore. They have, in no small measure, contributed to societal ills and moral decadence among our youths nowadays.

“So, we felt, it cannot continue like this, we need to revive the sakara music and appreciate those who have over the years stood with us and assisted us in sustaining my father’s legacy”, he added.

Ex-Chelsea striker ,Neil Shipperley sentenced for public masturbation

A former Premier League striker who masturbated in front of a mother and her 16-year-old daughter has been given a 12-month community order.

Ex-Crystal Palace star Neil Shipperley, 45, exposed his genitals from inside his van, in Hillingdon, west London, on 17 September.

The mother said she was "disgusted" by the sight.

Shipperley must complete 20-days of rehabilitation as part of the order given at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Shaan Sethi told the court Shipperley had driven his van up to the victims, winding down his window and stopping the vehicle.

'Predator'
Mr Sethi said the pair had turned to thank Shipperley for letting them cross the road but "they then noticed he was holding his penis in his hand and staring directly at them".

They walked away from the vehicle, but Shipperley, from West Drayton, west London, followed in his van.

In a victim impact statement, the mother said: "Some people may see flashers as pests or a nuisance to society. My view of Neil Shipperley is as a predator. His aim was to intimidate us, to violate us, to shock us and to scare us."

Shipperley, who admitted intentionally exposing his genitals intending that someone would be caused alarm or distress, had "expressed anguish, embarrassment, shame, but above all remorse," the court heard.

He is said to have sought counselling for personal issues, including the death of his father, gambling problems and debts.

Mitigating for Shipperley, Sarah O'Kane said: "Everything came to a crescendo on the day in question. This was, he thinks on reflection, a cry for help."

Shipperley, who played for among others Nottingham Forest, Wimbledon, Chelsea and Southampton during his 15-year career, must also complete 120 hours' unpaid work and pay a £90 victim surcharge, £85 in costs and £200 in compensation.

He is subject to a five-year sexual offences notification requirement order and must report to Hayes police station within three days.

Brides undergo genital mutilation 'to be virgins'

Some women in Sudan are opting to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM) a month or two before their wedding to pretend to be virgins.

This is even though most of them have already been circumcised as girls - something that usually happens between the ages of four and 10 years old.

In the mainly Muslim country this can involve the removal of the clitoris and labia and often includes some stitching to narrow the vaginal opening- a process known as infibulation.

These stitches come away when a woman has sex.

If a bride-to-be opts for further FGM, the operation, usually carried out by midwives, can involve cutting away more of the labia and re-stitching the vagina.

'Couldn't walk for days'

"It was so painful and I had to go and stay with a friend of mine for days until I recovered because I didn't want my mother to know," said Maha, which is not her real name so that her identity can be protected.

"Urinating was an issue and I couldn't walk properly in the first few days."

Maha underwent the operation with two months to go to her wedding to a man "a little bit older" than herself.

"He will never have trust me if he discovers that I have had sex before our marriage," she said.

Faceook user narrates how a woman discovered her best friend of 25 years married her husband

A Facebook user named Christine Aluyi has shared shocking story of how a woman discovered that her husband recently got married to her best friend of over 25 years.

Christine revealed that two women named Rukevwe and Cordelia have been friends for over 25 years. Rukevwe got married and later divorced. She eventually had a child after her divorce but didn't remarry. As for Cordelia, she was married and her marriage seemed happy.

10 years ago, Cordelia and her husband moved to the UK and Rukevwe was welcomed whenever she comes to visit them in the UK.

The women also had another friend named Bawo but she was married and mostly focused on her own family. In July this year, Cordelia's husband started pressuring her for a divorce. She granted his wish and moved on with her life. She later planned a trip to Nigeria and asked to stay at her best friend Rukevwe's home in Nigeria. But Rukevwe kept avoiding her and claimed she wouldn't be around.

Cordelia came to Nigeria all the same and discovered, to her shock, that Rukevwe was avoiding her because she has married Cordelia's husband.

Read the shocking story according to Christine;

The Face of a Betrayer....

I don't know if I am dreaming or if this is true, Bawo I will need you to tell me that it is not a dream.... I cannot believe this. Rukevwe, you? You of all people? So all these tens of years that you have been acting like Cordelia Ufuoma Rowayinor Ovakporae 's best friend and sister, you have been hating her? You hated her so much that you pulled the trigger. It would have been better, if you had shot her. Rukevwe, why? Of all the men in the world, it is Cordy's husband that you can marry. Cordy your best friend and sister?

Friends, pls forgive my ranting this morning, I just got the rudest shock of my life now. Maybe I am dreaming o. My former neighbour and friend, Cordilia Rowayinor on the right in the two photos and wearing red hat, woke me up with this heartbreaking news, that Rukevwe, on the left in the two photos, wearing white hat, whom I have always known to be her bestie just married her husband. Rukevwe and Bawo were the closest friends she has had for over 25yrs since I knew them. They are all younger than me, so I was not in their click of friends but I am more of a big sister to Cordy.

Cordy, her husband and I and my husband used to live in the same estate in Warri . We had our children in that estate until they relocated abroad for about 10yrs now and I moved out. Rukevwe has been part of her life. She was married briefly and divorced and later had a child for a man she was dating before she got married. All through, she has been having a very good relationship with Cordy and Cordy has invited her to spend time with her in the UK a couple of times. Rukevwe and Bawo are the friends who became sisters to Cordy. Since, Bawo got married, her marriage keeps her occupied, but the close friendship still exists. Rukevwe is the free one who was available until now.

Though, Cordy and her husband has been having a rough time, it never got to asking for divorce. He pestered her for divorce in July this year, which she granted unknowing to her, that it was to enable him marry her best friend and supposed sister. Apparently, it was Rukevwe who was pestering him to divorce her.

Cordy came to Nigeria for a marriage ceremony. She would have put up with Rukevwe, but Rukevwe told her she was out of town to prevent her from going to her house. Only for her to find out that, in the month of July when her husband was pestering her for divorce, he came to Nigeria to marry Rukevwe.

This is a very big blow to Cordilia cos it never crossed her mind that even if her husband wants another wife, it would be her best friend. A friend she has shared all her life with. Rukevwe gave Cordy the deepest cut, the biggest heartbreak.

Who knows when he started sleeping with her? Probably, the relationship has been on all the while they were in Warri before they relocated abroad and the times Rukevwe went to visit them in the UK, he has been having it out with her when Cordy went on night duty. Na only God know.

This is sleeping with the enemy part 2. I cannot comprehend this. I still want to believe that the call Cordilia put through to me this morning was in a dream. I am looking forward to waking up from it.

Cordy, it is well. You will recover from the shock. God will strengthen you and give you reason to be happy that both of them have left your life. Thank God that in her desperation to marry your husband, she didn't poison you or kill you through other means, she only asked him to divorce you. We should be thanking God for your life.

Rukevwe, it is only God that can judge and reward you. I hear you people want to relocate to Canada. Know that God is omnipresent.

This is a true life movie and it has just been acted.

I am Christine Aluyi, a living witness to this friendship.

Davido dissociates himself from the viral COZA video

Davido has dissociated himself from the COZA 12 days of glory advert video. He claimed he did the video for the little girl in the video for her personal use because the girl is a huge fan of his only for him to see it being used in the viral advert.

He demanded that the video be retracted or he will take further actions

Elizabeth Omale, the lady behind the video however apologized over the misrepresentation the viral video ignited. She also disclosed that Davido never did an advert for COZA.

Omale said the video which is not the official ad for the event was her own way of raising awareness for a program she is passionate about.

Her words;

I would like to make some clarifications on the video I recorded with @davidoofficial for my church, the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA). The video was in no way intended to be an official ad from the church. It was simply my way of raising awareness for a program I am passionate about.

I have read reports online claiming that Davido is coming to the program as an ambassador of COZA because of the video, these reports are false. He recorded that video with me and my daughter as a favour to a friend, nothing more. Also, my pastor, Pastor Biodun only reposted the video from my page because he has been reposting videos about the program. My video wasn’t the only one on his page.

The video was a product of my excitement about 12DG and there was no malice intended. I apologize for the confusion and misrepresentation, and once again I’d like to say I acted as an individual and not as an official representative of COZA. Thank you.

Six die in collapsed mining pit in Jos

Six persons died when a mining pit collapsed on Tuesday at Zawan Community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The member representing Jos South Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mr Gwottson Fom, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday.

Fom said the ages of the victims ranged from 20 to 27, describing the incident as “sad and unfortunate.”

A NAN correspondent, who visited the area, reports that many others sustained injuries in the incident.

“We know that these young persons died carrying out an illegal activity but it is obvious unemployment led them into doing it.

“People go out of their way to do things considered illegal just to fend for themselves and their families.

“This is not time to apportion blames but it is sad and unfortunate that a community will lose six vibrant youths in a day,’’ he said.

Earlier, an eye witness and Youth Leader in the community, Mr Emmanuel Gyang, told NAN that the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

He said over 50 persons were inside the mining pit when it collapsed on them, while others were rescued with various degrees of injuries.

“This is the first time we are experiencing such an ugly incident in this community

“It is a devastating situation; losing six vibrant youths in one day is really sad and a monumental loss,’’ he said.

Gyang said the corpses had been buried, while the injured were currently receiving treatment at Our Lady of Apostles Hospital, Zawan.

R. Kelly denies bribing someone to fake ID so he could marry Aaliyah aged 15

R. Kelly pleaded not guilty to bribing someone to make a fake ID for Aaliyah so he could marry her at 15.

The singer, now 52, married teen pop star Aaliyah in a secret ceremony in 1994 at a hotel, in Chicago.

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was just 15 years old when she was wed to the musician more than a decade ago.

Their marriage was annulled in February 1995; her family were said to have filed for the annulment of the marriage less than a year after it took place.

The marriage was annulled on the grounds Aaliyah was underage.

Now R. Kelly has entered a not guilty plea to allegations he bribed someone to make a fake ID for Aaliyah before he walked her down the aisle.

The songwriter made the plea via a video link from behind bars where he has been held in Chicago jail.
He is charged with paying for a fraudulent identification document for someone identified as "Jane Doe" on August 30 in 1994.

The star is accused of getting the said fake ID from an unnamed Illinois government employee.

R. Kelly married Aaliyah just a day later when he was the age of 27.

The teen pop star died aged 22 in a plane smash on August 25 in 2001 in the Bahamas.

Jussie Smollett may return to Empire for final season

Jussie Smollett may be returning to Empire as bosses have revealed they are considering bringing the actor back during the show's sixth and final season.

The actor, 37, was axed from the drama in season five after he claimed to have been attacked by two men who hurled racist and homophobic abuse at him and was then accused of fabricating the accusation and charged with making a false police report.

Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney told TVLine that discussions are underway to possibly have Jussie return as it would be 'weird' to end the show without him.

He said: 'It would be weird in my mind to end this family show and this family drama of which he was such a significant part of without seeing him.

'It’s fair to say it’s being discussed, but there’s no plan as of yet to bring him back. There’s been no decision made.'

Bosses considering a potential comeback for the actor is a change from when Empire creator Lee Daniels insisted last June that Jussie would never return to the programme.
